hang out. We are programs that help people of all ages get and stay healthy. We help our youth grow and mature into responsible, civic minded adults; and, we help our local families in need. In short, the Y really is… so much more. The Y. Recognized around the world—generating nods of approval from those familiar with our work and smiles from those who hold personal memories and experiences with us. Here in Hawai‘i, our branches reflect the communities we serve—each distinct in the variety of services they provide, yet uniform in one aspect. We all work to strengthen the foundations of our community. But as the communities around us has changed, so have our response to their needs. We still offer exercise classes, but there are also academic enrichment programs for our youth. We still offer cardio fitness regimens, but there are also chronic disease programs to help those who suffer from obesity, diabetes, arthritis and Parkinson’s Disease. We still give swimming lessons, but we also give scholarships and financial assistance to those who need it most.

2013 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

Leadership Report Dear YMCA family and friends, In Hawai‘i, we are blessed with great weather and a natural environment that contributes to a healthy lifestyle. In fact, we are one of the healthiest states in the nation, according to a number of statistical sources. Despite these advantages, achieving a healthy lifestyle for many of us in Hawai‘i still remains a challenge. And it’s because healthy living is more than just exercising. It’s about achieving a level of health in mind, spirit and body that allows us to lead our fullest lives possible at any age and have hope for the future. That’s why the Y’s focus and the scope of what we do in the community has continued to change over the years. We have become so much more than a gym or a place to learn how to swim. We still provide those services, but as you will read in this annual report, we have and will continue to grow and evolve to better meet the needs of our communities—for our youth, families and seniors. Today, we offer a wealth of signature Y programs to help people overcome their challenges and achieve and sustain their own healthy living goals. We offer Y programs that target obesity, combat diabetes, and deal with chronic diseases and pain. We also provide programs that offer hope for our youth and families. And we work hard at ensuring that anyone in Hawai‘i who need our assistance gets it, regardless of their financial situation. In short, we are fulfilling the promise implicit in our new tag line: The Y. So Much More. It is a promise to you that we are here, as we have been for the last 144 years, offering a haven where you can come to improve the quality of your life— whether it’s through healthy living, cementing the bonds of family, empowering your children or simply finding joy in all that you do. Yes, the Y is a place that is “so much more.” It’s a place where you will always be welcomed. Aloha and mahalo,

Michael Broderick President and CEO

So Much More in

2013

Here’s just a snapshot of the exciting programs and activities that took place at and beyond the walls of our YMCA of Honolulu.

Opening of the 62nd YMCA Youth & Government legislative session.

YMCA OF HONOLULU | 5

NFL Play 60 for All

Community at Work and Play

Our Y teamed up with the Salvation Army to host a free NFL Play 60 event for more than 300 kids at the Aloha Stadium. NFL Play 60 is the National Football League’s campaign to encourage kids to be active for 60 minutes a day to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity. Kids had a blast going through 6 different activity stations including jump rope challenges, football relay races, ladder drills, push-ups and sit-ups and ending with a giant Zumba class!

More than 200 volunteers from the YMCA of Honolulu joined “Disney VoluntEARS” from Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, organizers from KaBOOM!, and the community on May 25 to build a new playground in less than eight hours at the Y’s Windward Branch. The playground’s design was based on drawings by children who participated in a Design Day event in February.

Closing the Gap! Our Y’s early learning readiness program for children whose families chose not to or are unable to send them to pre-school continued to expand and now include sites at Kuhio Park Terrace, Mayor Wright Housing and at Kauluwela School. Launched as a pilot project in 2012, Come…with Me! addresses the significant gap in readiness these children experience compared to peers who have had preschool. Caregivers and their children play and learn together supporting them in their growth and development and transition for a successful start in school.

Future Leaders This year, 80 teens from around the State were sworn in to serve in the 62nd Annual YMCA Youth & Government legislative session. Teens learned parliamentary procedures, elected their own governor, speaker of the house, senate president and delegates and drafted their own bills and resolutions. Teens then spent three days debating and voting on their bills and resolutions in a mock legislative session.

Getting Healthy, Breaking Records More than 6,000 kids and their families came out eager to learn how to exercise their minds and bodies at the 6th Annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day in April. Attendance records were broken for this free event featuring more than 30 community partners offering fun, active play and educational opportunities to help parents improve their kids’ lifestyles.

Y Seniors Feature! Our Y seniors and programs were the focus of a featured cover article for Generations Magazine in May. The five-page article highlighted the numerous specialty programs offered just for seniors in fitness, chronic disease, education, and social activities. Several Y seniors and volunteers were also profiled!

N.E.W. Keiki Last year, we launched the pilot phase of a childhood obesity program, called N.E.W. Keiki (Nutrition, Exercise and Weight Management). In partnership with Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, the program is for severely to moderately obese children and their families. This year, we have continued to expand the program with 23 youth and 38 of their parents and siblings who completed the year-long fitness, nutrition, medical management and education program, which included cooking classes at Kapiolani Community College’s Culinary of the Pacific. The results were fantastic! 73% of participants maintained or lost weight. 82% of participants decreased their BMI. 100% of participants reported initiating lifestyle changes.

Pearl Harbor Read Aloud Kids in our Y A+ After School sites across O‘ahu joined the National Park Service and Pacific Historic Parks to share the historical significance of December 7 through their second annual read aloud program. At Pauoa Elementary School, a National Park Ranger read “Across the Blue Pacific, A World War II Story” to a group of elementary children and Pearl Harbor Survivor Delton Walling shared his experiences of December 7, 1941.

We’re more than a gym The YMCA offers many specialty health and fitness programs such as those focused on seniors that keep them safe, healthy and connected, as well as programs for all ages that address chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s Disease and obesity. In 1983, Don Pendleton began to suffer from excruciating back pain. He couldn’t sit, stand or walk. When surgery failed, doctors told him that there was not much else they could do for him. Don couldn’t work, and his only recourse was pain medication. He became bedridden, sullen and lost all hope of recovery. Don was living in San Diego at the time when his brother suggested he try the Y’s water aerobics class—a non weight bearing, low-impact exercise class designed for people recovering from injuries. At first Don dismissed the idea, but with his brother’s persistence, decided to give the classes a try. Religiously attending the classes four times a week, Don found to his surprise that after 6 months, he could walk without pain. “The results were frankly amazing,” Don said. “If I hadn’t found the Y classes, I honestly believe I would not be alive today. I just wanted to give up because I couldn’t do anything without pain. Just stepping off a curb was painful. Now I can move pain free and that has made all the difference in the world.”

8 | 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

When Don moved to Hawai‘i in 2002, he was delighted to find that the Nu‘uanu Y offered the same water aerobics class and friendly supportive Y staff that helped him in California. He hasn’t missed a class since arriving in Hawai‘i. In fact, he often fills in as a volunteer substitute instructor. He says there are many others like him, who suffer from a variety of chronic diseases who are helped by the classes. He says the most satisfying part of taking part in the class is watching others leave the class and move on to higher impact forms of exercise because they’ve been healed from their injuries or disabilities. He says the Y has earned his unwavering commitment and support.

We’re more than a place The positive impact of our Y reaches far beyond the walls of our facilities. The Y College Camp program brings together high school juniors and seniors from at-risk communities across the state for a week at Atherton Y to motivate them to take full advantage of the opportunities in higher education. Workshops, service projects, team building exercises and college campus tours give campers a chance to learn more about themselves and what it takes to get into and succeed in college. Growing up in the rural and isolated town of Pāhoa on the Big Island, Jerry had always secretly dreamed of going to college. However, with his family’s limited financial means, Jerry had never thought it would be possible. Still, when he learned about the YMCA’s College Camp, he applied and was ecstatic when he was accepted. The camp opened his eyes to the real possibilities of what college life and a degree offered. He realized how much he wanted to go to college, no matter how unrealistic it was.

Colleen, herself, went on to become even more involved with the Y, serving on the YMCA of Honolulu Atherton Branch Advisory Board, chairing the 2013 YMCA Annual Support Campaign for the Atherton Y Branch and being selected to serve on the World Alliance of YMCAs’ Executive Committee for 2014–2018. She will be one of only three delegates from the U.S. and will play a key role in shaping future global strategic direction for the YMCA worldwide. All this while still completing her business degree at UH.

“It was an amazing process of self-discovery,” Jerry recalls. “I was able to reflect on my life and realized that despite the adversity, I had done very well. Colleen Leung, who was my camp mentor, was supportive with her advice, encouragement and sharing of her own struggles and successes. I came away with the confidence that I could make college a reality.”

As for Jerry, through hard work and a renewed determination, he graduated from high school— a year early. He applied and was accepted to the University of California, Berkeley class of 2018, with a package of financial aid and scholarships to pave the way.

“As a College Camp mentor, I saw the importance of inclusion and what it means for these kids,” said Colleen, a University of Hawai‘i student majoring in business. “It was also a pivotal point in my own life. For the first time, I felt I was indeed a leader and could initiate change. I was eager to take on this new role.”

10 | 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

He says he wants to eventually return to Hawai‘i and Pāhoa to help other young students in the same way his Y mentors ignited a fire of hope and determination in him. Now at UC-Berkeley, he still manages to keep in touch with his Y College Camp mentor, Colleen Leung—treasuring the bond that changed the both of them.

We’re more than you know Our Annual Support Campaign raises more than $1 million each year for financial assistance to those who cannot afford YMCA programs but who desperately need our help. It helps kids get into afterschool care and into our summer fun programs. It also helps families, such as Cora Spearman and Chris Chang, looking for ways to improve their lives. From time to time, life has a way of tripping up even the best of us. For Cora Spearman, life had been pretty good. A world traveler and successful business woman, Cora’s travels eventually brought her to Hawai‘i, where she met her future husband, Chris Chang, a local boy who worked as a production director for a radio group.

(Image: Cora/Chris)

Together they started a successful gift and specialty clothing store and talked about marriage and a family. Her future with Chris looked rosy and bright. But in 2009, everything changed. A growing tumor in her jaw landed her at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital for surgery and an intense regimen of radiation. It did the job, but damage caused by the severity of the radiation and reconstructive surgery on her face sent her back to Johns Hopkins for multiple medical treatments. Cora’s mounting medical costs forced her to close her dream store but didn’t stop her from marrying Chris, or from giving birth to her two daughters. Somehow, through all of Cora’s medical trials, the couple had managed to continue to live life and start a family. Both Cora and Chris had grown up around their neighborhood Y’s, Cora in Ohio and Chris here in the islands, learning how to swim, enjoying summer camps, and working as counselors in the Ys summer programs.

12 | 2013 ANNUAL REPORT

Cora and Chris wanted their daughters to have the same positive Y experiences. But membership and program costs seemed prohibitive, given medical bills that still weighed the couple down. That’s when the Y stepped in, providing the family with financial assistance for swimming lessons and a fitness membership so both Cora and Chris could work out at the Y and even take advantage of child care for some much needed downtime. They both say the Y has been a godsend and a wonderful support for their entire family. “The Y and especially the folks there have been absolutely beautiful, not only post operation but post babies,” Cora says. “It’s not about swimming lessons, or exercise, but a place that’s given us time to rejuvenate ourselves. It’s also been a place where we’ve found people who provided us comfort and support.” And, as if on cue, she adds, “It’s not just a gym, but a place where we feel like part of an ‘ohana and community. I’ve never looked at cancer as a curse. Certainly, it’s thrown us a curve ball and been a financial burden, but it’s also introduced us to a whole new world of supporters and friends that we would not have known otherwise.”

Cora and Chris love the Y’s child watch service which allows them time to work out together.

“It’s not about swimming lessons or exercise, but a place that’s given us time to rejuvenate ourselves.” CORA SPEARMAN
