We All Need the Y 2012 Strong Communities Annual Support Campaign

WE ALL NEED THE Y There’s no place quite like the Y. We’re a vital part of O‘ahu — a welcoming place to learn new skills, connect with others and access support in times of need. Our unique combination of services enriches the well-being of people of all ages and walks of life. As a nonprofit organization, we never turn away anyone who needs us. We rely on your support to continue to build strong communities.

Thank You for Helping Us Reach Our Community Goal Thanks to so many of you, the Y of Honolulu raised over $900,000 and distributed more than $1 million in financial aid in 2011. This year, our goal is again ambitious at $960,000, but more than ever we need your help to ensure that Y programs and services are available to everyone who needs the Y. It’s all because of you that we are able to strengthen our communities. Please give today.

What does “Strong Communities” mean? It means the Y is there… » for that 3-year old who sits at home with his grandmother not receiving kindergarten preparation and who will likely fall behind a grade in school without help. » for that family who is struggling to make ends meet and can’t afford to give their children a summer program experience. » for that teen who has nowhere else to go after school but to hang out and potentially get involved in unsafe behaviors. » for that senior having a hard time walking because her arthritis is getting worse and she needs the encouragement to join an exercise class with others. We need your help to sustain our mission. By giving to the Strong Communities Annual Support Campaign, we can accomplish great things together. Thank you for your generosity.

“I was looking for a community service opportunity and I love working with kids so my friend at school suggested I look into the Y. Through the Leeward Y’s summer STRIVE teen leadership program, I was able to work with mentors and care for young children. They gave me an opportunity to become a leader and role model myself. My Y leaders really spent a lot of time with us, talking about our goals, our dreams and even encouraged writing in our journals. It solidified my decision to go to college and major in education because I discovered my love for children and teaching.” Through the help of the YMCA , Kelcey was able to participate in STRIVE , a summer program designed to help teens build critical life skills. Kelcey is just one of the thousands of teens impacted by the Y, taking a greater interest in learning, making smarter life choices and realizing their potential. Kelcey Chinen

YOUTH A safe place after school. Lessons about teamwork and a chance to try new things. Support from a caring role model. The Y provides youth with meaningful opportunities to learn and grow.

OPPORTUNITY Helping adults and children reach their potential is at the heart of what we do. As a leading nonprofit in your community, we teach life-changing skills and provide essential support in times of need. “I can’t say the YMCA saved my life, but it definitely gave me hope and my health back. After several major surgeries, I became disabled and ended up isolated at home. During my long recovery period, my doctor said I needed to begin my healing process through gentle exercise. I heard about the Y’s “Membership for All” program, which provides assistance to those who need help during financially challenging times. Through my Nu‘uanu Y classes in the last year and a half, I regained my balance and posture and hardly use my cane anymore. The Y has become a refuge, a safe and comforting place for me and I am grateful. ” More than a gym, the Y becomes a healing place for many individuals like Tom. Through the Y’s financial assistance program, Tom was able to regain his health, improve his quality of life and connect with his community. Tom Campbell YMCA Member

COMMUNITY In communities across O‘ahu, we’re there. The Y is a unique gathering place where you’ll find toddlers alongside seniors, families spending quality time together, and neighbors reconnecting. “Many people think the Y is all about fitness and exercise, but it is so much more. It’s really about relationships, self growth, being a better person, and helping children interact and play well with each other. Having worked at the Kalihi Y for 30 years, I’ve seen amazing things happen. I recall a family from the Kalihi area, who had to take turns sending their kids to the Y because they couldn’t afford to send all of them together. I recently saw one of the girls, all grown up now and working as a dental assistant. She told me that the Y helped her grow up with values, knowing her purpose in life and having goals to move forward.” Renee is not only a star employee at the Y, but one of the biggest campaigners for the Y’s Annual Support Campaign. Like so many Y volunteers, she is passionate about raising funds to help kids feel safe and grow up with values that can carry them into adulthood. Renee Guillermo YMCA Staff and Volunteer
