CEO and Board President Dear Friends, “Our Y welcomes all” is the first line of our mission statement. Many of our conversations revolve around the last and very important word—all. Our donors know that every dollar ensures we serve “all” in our community, expanding our reach to more people every day.

Equally important to the word “all” is the word “welcomes”. The Y “welcomes” all – with the support of our donors. We welcome our friends and neighbors to so much more than a facility. We welcome them to opportunity, encouragement, and connectedness. We are providing a place where parents have access to child care in a safe, enriching environment, where everyone can improve their health, and a place where kids can put down their devices and engage with each other through swim team, sports classes, gymnastics and more.

At a time when everyone is talking about a world divided, our Y is working to bring people together. In 2017, we engaged more than 80,000 Y members and program participants. We did this by partnering wherever possible with local businesses, municipalities, school districts, fellow non-profits and most importantly, with the generous support of you—our donors and funders.

In total, $3.9 million was reinvested into the community through the Y’s charitable sources. Your generosity and support allows us to say “yes” to every child, family and individual in need of Y financial assistance and scholarships. You help us provide no cost programs to hundreds of children who need nutritious meals, educational support, affordable housing or simply a place to feel safe and supported during difficult times.

Our message of “welcoming all” will be even more important in the coming years. We are steadfast in our mission to leverage the Y’s 160 year history of social responsibility, healthy living, and youth development to raise a collective voice of togetherness, inclusion, and support for all who need us.

OUR IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY After over 160 years of service, our Y has established itself as a force for change in our community.

We are a place that brings people together by serving over 49,000 members. As an organization, and on behalf of our members, we tackle the achievement gap and provide scholarships for summer camp. We keep both our youth and our older population active and engaged in a variety of programs from swim lessons to water aerobics, from basketball leagues to yoga and Enhance Fitness. We provide over 500 residents a place to call home with our affordable housing.

The program incorporates a strength-based approach and focuses on strengths versus deficits, is collaborative versus hierarchical, focuses on solutions and competencies versus what needs to be fixed, and focuses on what is working versus what is not. We have combined this strength-based approach to caring with clinical, academic, and physical health components to form an integrated intervention.

It is worth noting that the program is voluntary. Those students who participate receive only a half suspension and return to school with the right tools to make healthy decisions. This is a positive alternative to serving a suspension which is often done at home with little or no support.

Four school districts – Peabody, Beverly, Ipswich, and Gloucester – have signed on to participate in the program. Instead of serving a suspension at home, students who choose to attend PASS report to the McPherson Youth Center in Beverly where they can speak with counselors, do their homework, and get support rather than punishment.

Used as a teen drop-in center after school, the McPherson Youth Center is available during school hours. It provides the perfect environment for kids to stay engaged with their studies while receiving support to stay on track during their suspension. Outside, students can play basketball or even take a walk along the river.

The program is staffed by Program Director Nancy Marrs and overseen by Judith Cronin, Executive Director of the Greater Beverly Y. In addition, Children’s Friend and Family Services of Salem provides a clinician and a youth specialist.

The eight-week program is a partnership between the Greater Beverly YMCA and Northshore Recovery High School.

The program is intended to offer help to students before they end up at Northshore Recovery. Often when students are suspended there are underlying mental health issues and that’s what the program is trying to address.

With the success of the pilot program, we hope other school districts will participate and provide funding. If fully funded, the program has the potential to serve more than 1,000 students during the school year.

HEALTHY LIVING Improving our communities’ health and well-being At the Y, we believe that being healthy means more than simply being physically active. With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health, and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. We partner with local hospitals, health agencies, and other organizations to provide people with greater support and resources for healthy lifestyles. As a result, thousands of youth, adults, and families are receiving the support, guidance, and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind, and body.

Enhance Fitness ®

Moderate Impact Classes with High Impact Results The YMCA of the North Shore has joined other Y’s across the country in offering this comprehensive and evidence-based group exercise program for older adults. It uses simple, easyto-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active and independent throughout their life.

Some of the benefits our participants enjoy are:

• More energy

• Better balance/less falls

• Increased upper and lower body strength

• Increased flexibility and range of motion

• Better sleep

• Sense of independence

• Social connections and new friendships

In addition to the physical benefits, research has shown that, among older adults who participate in Enhance®Fitness, health costs were lowered by close to $1,000 per year.

Each class session includes cardiovascular, strength, balance, and flexibility training and fosters strong social relationships between participants.

Participants can use chairs for support if necessary and move entirely at their own pace.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Building strong and bright futures Building a strong foundation for lifelong learning begins in those very early years of a child’s life. The Y serves as a place for children to learn, explore, and grow every day. We believe that children are brimming with possibility. We encourage kids to explore their unique talents and interests helping them to discover who they are and what they can achieve. The Y gives kids and teens a safe place to belong, build confidence, and learn positive behaviors grounded in our core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Our before and after school programs keep school age students engaged in learning and fun activities outside of the classroom.

We offer programming after school at our Ys and local schools.

Some Ys also offer before school care with transportation.

We know that having quality, dependable care is important for working families. Our programs offers:

• Daily homework time

• Gross and fine motor activities

• Enrichment activities like swimming, yoga and sports

• Arts and crafts

• Healthy snacks

• Outside activities-weather permitting

• STEAM activities

• Literacy activities

Everyone belongs at the Y, regardless of ability to pay. We are committed to ensuring every community member has access to our Ys. Our financial assistance program enables all individuals and families to become active members and participants at a rate that fits their budgets. This program is possible thanks to the many generous donors who support the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, with 100% of donations supporting kids, adults, and families in our communities.

It was a spectacular night as the ballroom at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Danvers was transformed into a magical dreamscape. The evening program included a Live Auction and a separate “Fund A Need” to support our older adult programming. Special entertainment was provided

by Danielle Lovasco, Julia Toler, Mariella Robinson, and Alex Henrich as they treated guests to a stunning performance of Pure Imagination/ Imagine. The FlyKidz from our Salem Y brought the house down with an electric hip hop performance, which led right into guests dancing the night away to music by Booty Vortex.

We thank the individuals and corporations who supported this event and allowed us to raise over $730,000 in support of our mission.

A Donor Making a Difference Dane and Ann Poeske and their four children moved to New England from California in 1995. While looking for a city to raise their young family, the Poeske’s chose Beverly, primarily due to the prominence the Y played in the community. According to Dane, “ Ann and I both knew that someone in my family would be at the Y every day. We wanted our kids to connect to activities and friends and to experience the sense of community that we knew the Y could provide.”

Dane Poeske has a long history with the YMCA. As a Midwest kid in Milwaukee, WI, Dane and his brothers were dropped off at his local Y every Saturday morning for a day filled with activity and engagement. Dane’s passion for the Y and giving back to his local community grew as he saw his dad raising money to improve their local Y facility. “This was my first exposure to giving of one’s time, talent, and treasure to improve their local community,” Dane remembered, “I saw my dad’s enthusiasm and commitment as he shared his vision for building a better community through the Y, and it stayed with me.”

While living in Beverly, the Poeske kids participated in basketball, swimming, and camp at the Y, making lasting friendships. Dane and Ann experienced

how the Y helps so many people, in so many ways. “No one is turned away from the Y’s essential programs and services,” Dane explained, “The Y’s inclusivity and local impact resonates with what is most important to us.” It is this idea that is key to supporting a nonprofit, according to Dane: discover what you’re passionate about and connect with organizations - like the Y - that deliver on that mission.

Dane’s connection with the Greater Beverly Y deepened when he joined its Board of Directors in 2011. His volunteerism quickly expanded to leadership as he created a strategic vision for the future of the Sterling YMCA. Within the year, Dane challenged the Beverly Y Board to take a big and bold step. “Very few people get a chance to leave a legacy - a very special gift for the next generation,” Dane said, “As Y board members, we have the opportunity to leave that legacy - to make a powerful impact by creating a Y that will provide better education, better health and wellness, and a better member experience for all.”

For the next six years, Dane remained committed to the original objectives of the expansion project and strongly advocated for an expanded Beverly YMCA, engaging members, donors, and the community for their support. “Our approach to volunteering is to bring passion for the nonprofit’s mission,” said Dane, who also supports local nonprofits Beverly Bootstraps and Harborlight Community Partners, “Ann and I believe that passion energizes others.”

Due to the generosity of the Poeske family, the Y Board of Directors, and many other supporters, the new Sterling Y facilities officially opened on March 27, 2018, less than a year from the start of the construction. “Our gift wasn’t about our names being on a wall,” said Dane, “The new Healthy Living and Education Centers at the Sterling Center YMCA will help build and strengthen our local community. We saw an opportunity to make a difference.”

Committed To Our Community Our YMCA of the North Shore staff makes a difference in the lives of local children, adults, and families each and every day. They contribute to the advancement of our vision by meeting the needs of the people in our communities. Guided by the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, our staff create an environment where everyone aspires to be their best.

Y staff are brimming with enthusiasm and passion because they see the positive impact they’re making. Whether teaching a fitness class or wellness program, being a camp counselor, or working with teens, the impact of our staff is transformative.

But their impact doesn’t stop with their day-to-day interactions with the people who cross their paths. In 2017, Y staff contributed over $100,000 to the YMCA of the North Shore’s “Colleague Campaign” which supports our Annual Campaign. Funds from the Annual Campaign support our mission to provide services to all who need them, regardless of their ability to pay. Staff support begins the fundraising season and provides inspiration for others to follow.

It was a great night to celebrate the Y! We would like to thank Leigh and Alan Scharfe for kindly hosting the Y’s Triangle Society, Ambassador’s Council and 1858 Society Donor Reception at the beautiful Manchester Yacht Club.

The triangle is the enduring symbol of the YMCA. For over 160 years, the triangle has represented the unity of spirit, mind, and body. Through these values, we create a firm foundation for living in any day and age. Today, more than 80 individuals are proud to call themselves members of the “Triangle Society” and are helping to ensure a strong YMCA for future generations. The Triangle Society recognizes and honors individuals and families who have made a commitment to the YMCA by including the YMCA in their estate plan or by making an outright gift of $10,000 or more to the endowment.
