SUMMER 2017

Welcome to YMCA Summer Camps In 1885, the YMCA helped to invent summer camp to provide children with positive and fun experiences that build confidence and new friendships. YMCA camp staff have served as positive role models for generations of campers and helped build future leaders. The centerpiece of YMCA camps are activities that excite and engage your child, giving them a summer filled with fun and adventure. Whether learning a new sport, discovering arts and culture or exploring the best of New York City, YMCA Summer Camps offer an opportunity to build wonderful lifelong memories and a feeling of community that will last beyond the summer. Each of our camps is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and our staff go through rigorous training to ensure the safety and positive experience of each child.

WE’RE READY FOR A SUMMER OF GROWTH & FUN!

SUMMER DAY CAMP

OUR CAMP OPTIONS Kindercamp

AGES 4-5

Kindercamp is designed for children entering kindergarten in September 2017. Structured day camp activities support the transition to kindergarten by building social and emotional skills in a fun and nurturing environment. We focus on classroom structure, transitional activities and group play. Kindercampers will participate in instructional swimming, indoor and outdoor physical fitness, interactive science, literacy activities, theme-based arts and crafts and local outings.

Day Camp

AGES 6-12

Traditional Day Campers will engage in activities that will enhance their social and emotional skills, help keep their academics on track, keep them physically active and challenge them to learn new things every day. They will have the opportunity to make new friends and take exciting trips throughout New York City. Campers will participate in a wide range of sports, instructional swimming, arts and crafts, and weekly themed days such as Crazy Hat Day. In addition, campers will engage in a variety of science, technology, engineering and math activities through each session. Traditional day campers will be divided into age groups with children within one to two years of their age.

“The YMCA invented camp. We know how to set the bar.” — NATALIE NORTON Chief Operating Officer, New York City’s YMCA

Day camp activities are designed to help children retain and build upon the academic skills they have developed during the school year. Research has shown that children can lose a half grade of learning over the summer months. To help mitigate summer learning loss, the YMCA offers interactive programs such as Book of the Week which gives campers the opportunity to read books and participate in facilitated discussions. In addition, activities such as journaling and age-appropriate science experiments will expand their literacy, math and science skills, and promote their ability to think critically. Field trips to museums and science centers will link to the camp-based activities and maximize educational enrichment.

Sports Camp

AGES 7-12

Our Sports Camp is designed to enhance various sports skills and fundamentals in age-appropriate groups. Through the coaching and support of camp staff with backgrounds or education in sports, campers will learn the history, rules and key skills of different sports, all while practicing their techniques in mini-games. In addition, campers will explore the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship and strong work ethics. Some sports include: basketball, soccer, flag football and baseball. Campers will end each session with a mini-Olympics. Every second Thursday of the session, campers will be taken to a private indoor sports arena to practice and play!

CAMP OPTIONS CONTINUED

Teen Camp

AGES 13-16

Teen Camp is open to 13-16 year olds currently enrolled in high school. A Teen Camp experience instills the values of accountability and teamwork in addition to the YMCA’s core values of honesty, respect, caring and responsibility. Teen campers participate in hands-on programming geared towards building self-confidence as well as activities designed to engage teens in developing educational and career goals. Field trips are purposeful in connecting teen campers to real-world experiences with technology, art and character development through team building. Campers will also participate in swimming, dancing, singing, sports and more!

Science Camp

AGES 7-10

The Dodge YMCA is partnering with MAD SCIENCE! Campers will engage in scientific explorations that are so much fun, they will forget they're learning! Campers will team up with fellow engineers to build a bridge, participate in an unforgettable dinosaur dig, build and launch a model rocket and explore the science behind the projects! Below are some weekly activities: Crazy Chemworks

Come and spark imaginative learning with a week of Mad chemistry. Watch as we combine elements and make them fizz, crackle and change color! We’ll delve into molecules and chemical reactions that produce light, gas and even slime!

DODGE YMCA CAMP Where your child will imagine, create & animate! Each year, the Dodge YMCA builds our camp curriculum around an exciting theme to engage kids in active learning. This year's theme is animation.

Jr. Explorers

Take a trip through some of the most unique areas of science. See how illusion and reality meet, and test out the ideas that make our favorite toys and tricks work. Each day explores a different scientific theme. We’ll explore the science behind magic, music movement and more! ASA: Journey into Outer Space! N From our earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, join us on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight and the challenges of space travel as you construct your own rockets and participate in a launch.

Swim Camp

AGES 7-9 MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS 15 Our Swim Camp helps youth develop valuable skills and a lifetime of love for the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. Campers will receive instructional swim at the Dodge YMCA 4 times per week, and receive additional pool time compared to traditional day camp. The key components of Swim Camp are:

»» Young swimmers are given the chance to build skills. »» S troke development and training is tailored to age and skill level. »» Swim campers participate in core-camp activities.

ed Hot Robots R Join Mad Science and our Radical Robots for a scientific journey through circuitry and sensors. Explore several different types of robots—robots that follow lines and sounds, robotic arms like the ones you see in the big factories on TV (well, smaller than that, but you get the picture). You will even play tag with robots that you control! Complete the camp by building your own robot to take home!

TIER 1 Is the actual cost of camp for a child to participate TIER 2 Is our partially subsidized fee for temporary or minor financial need TIER 3 Is our heavily subsidized fee for those in need of more financial assistance We also offer need-based financial assistance.
