WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Improving our community’s health and well-being

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body. The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of—and strengthening—our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME We’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistance for programs or membership. We’re happy to help. We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our annual Strong Kids Campaign. Contributions to Strong Kids enable us to offer a number of our programs and services at low or no cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable. The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyone can be a part of the Y? For more information on how to donate or volunteer as a Strong Kids Campaign fundraiser, please contact our Director of Fund Development & Communications, at 212-912-2266.

Greenpoint YMCA’s ExxonMobil S.Y.S.T.E.M Program With a history of generous support to the Greenpoint YMCA, ExxonMobil made a groundbreaking gift of $150,000 for the creation of the Greenpoint YMCA’s ExxonMobil S.Y.S.T.E.M Program (Summer Youth in Science Technology Engineering and Math) is an innovative science, technology and environmental program which foster's environmental stewardship and community engagement. The program is developed and administered in partnership with the Greenpoint YMCA and the New York University Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education, targeting high school Students, but indirectly benefiting community members of all ages. Students will be selected through a competitive process to work and learn about Greenpoint. Participants will have the opportunity to work with scientists, landscape designers, university faculty, environmental educators, historians, urban planners and elected officials. The areas of green technology, engineering and community engagement will be explored and hands on science experiments, projects, and trips will be conducted to help students learn about the environment and the community in which they live. Students will have opportunity to participate in outdoor work throughout the summer. The program will culminate with the students presenting their work to members of the community and elected officials at the end of the summer. The Greenpoint S.Y.S.T.E.M Program was launched in the summer of 2010 with a grant from ExxonMobil, which is truly a lead supporter of teen development, green technology and community service. We at the Greenpoint YMCA are so grateful for this support, and look forward to the return of the program in 2012. 6 | GREENPOINT YMCA FALL 2011

AQUATICS PROGRAMS Aquatics Policies & Procedures

Determining Your Child’s Swim Level – To help determine your child’s swim level, please refer to the descriptions of the swim levels provided in this brochure. Your child must be able to perform ALL the skills in the previous level to be enrolled into the next level. Children learn physical skills at different rates; therefore it is very common for children to repeat a level. All children will be swim-tested the first day of the session to determine if they are registered for the appropriate class. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant who they feel is not enrolled in the appropriate level into the correct level. Swim Lesson Policies – Although we strive for consistency in the teaching staff, there are occasions when a substitute teacher will be necessary. This is a better alternative than canceling a lesson. While we encourage parents to discuss their child’s swim progress with the swim instructors, to help classes start on time please request an appointment with the instructor if time between classes does not permit for a complete discussion.

2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been completed. Many skills in certain levels depend on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace and their progression through these levels varies greatly. 3. NO street shoes are to be worn on our pool deck and that strollers do not come beyond the locker room doors. Parents please remember that we are trying to keep a clean and healthy environment for your children and our participants. 4. For your child’s safety, to avoid distractions and so our participants may receive the very best swim instruction, parents are invited to observe class during the first and last classes of each session. On other class days, parents may drop off children and remain for 5 minutes, then return 5 minutes before the end of class. Thank you for your understanding. 5. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit

Pool Closures

1. Classes missed due to weather, holidays when the YMCA remains open, or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded.

Please see Membership Board located near our Free-Weight Room for notification of pool closures.

2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the lesson, there will be no credits, or make up lessons given. Private swim lessons are non-refundable. 3. If a participant withdraws (with approval) from a swim class at least 1 week (7 days) in advance of the start of class, he or she will receive a full refund. A 50% refund will be granted to participants who withdraw (with approval) after attending 2 classes or less. No refund will be granted to participants who withdraw after the second class. 4. If a participant withdraws from a swim class for medical reasons he or she will receive a YMCA credit or refund for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note. Swim Lessons 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have any questions about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please contact Meghan Gough, Aquatics Director at (212) 912-2275.
