Why We’re Here FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
Improving our community’s health and well-being In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.
We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of—and strengthening—our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

YOUTH PROGRAMS Y AFTERSCHOOL & Y SCHOOLS PS84
Y AFTERSCHOOL AND Y SCHOOLS AT PS84 - JOSE DE DIEGO | GRADES K-5 Y Schools is a new program model that establishes a fulltime Y presence in New York City schools. Beyond the presence of our existing Y After School Academy, Y Schools offer enhanced programs and services that extend from the opening school bell to day’s end with a focus on improving student academic performance. Each Y School is centered upon a dynamic partnership with the school leadership and focused on building a comprehensive set of services for children and families. This community school approach leverages public and private resources and includes partnerships with local community based organizations. During the school year, the YMCA works with city schools to develop the Y Schools model. At PS84 in Williamsburg, the Y staff have partnered with key community based organizations and the school staff to identify the key issues within the school and community at large in order to develop concrete strategies to drive improvement. Some of the core services established at these schools include:
• Providing Support for English Language Learners The Y works with the school to provide additional support for English language learners both in the classroom and in afterschool. Through the Y’s work in launching six New American Welcome Centers and the Harlem Literacy Zone project for New Americans, the Y has strong capacity and experience in the area of family literacy.
• Parent and Caregiver Support Services The principal and teachers have identified parent and caregiver engagement as one of the primary barriers to student success. While there is an organization providing support services for parents in the school, there is the opportunity for the Y to provide specific services to engage parents in the academic lives of their children. These will range from having parents attend culminating events for afterschool to ongoing workshops on topics from children’s health to parenting skills. • Improving the School Learning Environment There is the opportunity for the Y to have an immediate impact on the school learning environment through the development of structured programs before school, during recess and lunch time. This has been identified as a critical need by the schools and is an opportunity to build relationships that would support extended learning. In addition, a Y afterschool program provides high quality afterschool programming Monday-Friday from 2:30 PM - 6 PM for children that attend PS84. Location:
PS84 - Jose De Diego School 250 Berry Street Brooklyn, NY 11211

Active Older Adults (AOA) in the YMCA experience a strong sense of belongingness and a network of friends who provide supportive communities for sustained health and well-being. Through on-going, fun, safe, and engaging programs, activities, and events AOA members increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement while building relationships and celebrating the success and milestones of each older adult within their AOA community. Older adults, individuals 55 and above, are a significant and growing segment of our communities. All AOA benefit from engaging in YMCA activities that enhance connections, decrease a sense of isolation, and improve overall well-being.
