WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
Improving our community’s health and well-being In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.
We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of—and strengthening—our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME
We’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistance for programs or membership. We’re happy to help. We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our annual Strong Kids Campaign. Contributions to Strong Kids enable us to offer a number of our programs and services at low or no cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable. The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyone can be a part of the Y? For more information on how to donate or volunteer as a Strong Kids Campaign fundraiser, please contact Tatiana Terzuoli, Director of Fund Development & Communications at 212-912-2266.

YOUTH PROGRAMS KIDS IN CONTROL (KIC) Y AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM AT PS 84 | GRADES K-5 September-June | The K.I.C Y Afterschool program at P.S. 84 program is responsible for delivery of high-quality developmental care for children in grades K-5. We provide quality services that meet the needs of youth and families in the Williamsburg community, utilizing evidence-based practices and project base learning. Our primary focus is the development of our youth. At the K.I.C. Y Afterschool program, the staff provides positive, values-based activities such as performing arts, prevention services, healthy living activities, group work, creative writing, academic support, mentoring as well as recreational sports. Best of all, the children learn about themselves, their values and potential, while making friends and life-long memories. The K.I.C Y Afterschool program is made possible through funding from the New York State Office Alcohol & Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). There is NO FEE, but enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. Children must attend Jose De Diego Elementary School PS 84. For more information, please contact Troy J. Calhoun, K.I.C Y Afterschool Director, at (718) 387-5673 X3150.
Location: 250 Berry Street at PS 84 Monday-Friday, 3pm-6pm.
YSCHOOLS PROGRAM AT PS84 | GRADES K-5 Y Schools is a new program model that establishes a full-time Y presence in New York City schools. Beyond the presence of our existing Y After School Academy, Y Schools offer enhanced programs and services that extend from the opening school bell to day’s end with a focus on improving student academic performance.
Providing Support for English Language Learners The Y will work with the school to provide additional support for English Language Learners both in the classroom and in after school. Through the Y’s work in launching six New American Welcome Centers and the Harlem Literacy Zone project for New Americans the Y has strong capacity and experience in the area of family literacy.
Parent and Caregiver Support Services The principal and teachers have identified parent and caregiver engagement as one of the primary barriers to student success. While there is an organization providing support services for parents in the school, there is the opportunity for the Y to provide specific services to engage parents in the academic lives of their children. These will range from having parents attend culminating events for afterschool to ongoing workshops on topics from children’s health to parenting workshops.
Improving the School Learning Environment There is the opportunity for the Y to have an immediate impact on the school learning environment through the development of structured programs before school, during recess and lunch time. This has been identified as a critical need by the schools and is an opportunity to build relationships that would support extended learning. In addition the Y is working at PS 197 (TASC ExpandED) and PS 84 (YUSA Pilot Program) on pilot projects that focus on building strong academic outcomes through extended learning.
Each Y School will be centered upon a dynamic partnership with the school leadership and be focused building a comprehensive set of services for children and families. This community school approach will leverage public and private resources and include partnerships with local community based organizations. During the 2012-2013 school year the YMCA is working with four schools to develop the YSchool model: PS 84 in Williamsburg, PS 197 in Far Rockaway, PS 57 on Staten Island and PS 200 in Harlem. Y staff has been working with school leadership at each school to identify key issues in the school and develop concrete strategies to drive improvement. Some of the core services that will be established at these schools include: GREENPOINT YMCA | WINTER 2012/ SPRING 2013 | 15

IS YOUR SCHOOL PART OF THE YMCA’S SWIM FOR LIFE-2ND GRADE SWIM? Second grade is an ideal time for young people to take on new challenges, learn more skills and enhance their feelings of mastery and competence. Through Swim for Life, the YMCA of Greater New York seeks to offer children lessons in swimming skills and water safety that will keep them safe and build physical and social skills.
Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim works to build on student’s aquatic skills, while enhancing self-confidence and well-being. Classes run in ten-week cycles during the academic year during school hours. Children are brought to their school’s local YMCA by school personnel who will remain with them throughout the changing process and at the pool area during swim lessons. Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim students progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curriculum that incorporates the following five components: 1. Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around the water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. 2. Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. 3. Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. 4. Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. 5. Rescue: Students learn safety techniques-knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. For more information, please contact Jessica Wygand at (212) 912-2275.

AQUATICS POLICIES & PROCEDURES Determining Your Child’s Swim Level To help determine your child’s swim level, please refer to the descriptions of the swim levels provided in this brochure. Your child must be able to perform ALL the skills in the previous level to be enrolled into the next level. Children learn physical skills at different rates; therefore, it is very common for children to repeat a level. All children will be swimtested the first day of the session to determine if they are registered for the appropriate class. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant who they feel is not enrolled in the appropriate level into the correct level.
Swim Lesson Policies Although we strive for consistency in the teaching staff, there are occasions when a substitute teacher will be necessary. This is a better alternative than canceling a lesson. While we encourage parents to discuss their child’s swim progress with the swim instructors, to help classes start on time please request an appointment with the instructor if time between classes does not permit for a complete discussion.
Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. Classes missed due to weather, holidays when the YMCA remains open, or by choice of the participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. 2. If a participant misses a private swim lesson and does not inform the instructor at least 24 hours prior to the lesson, there will be no credits, or make up lessons given. Private swim lessons are non-refundable.
3. If a participant withdraws (with approval) from a swim class at least 1 week (7 days) in advance of the start of class, he or she will receive a full refund. A 50% refund will be granted to participants who withdraw (with approval) after attending 2 classes or less. No refund will be granted to participants who withdraw after the second class.
distractions and so our participants may receive the very best swim instruction, parents are invited to observe class during the first and last classes of each session. On other class days, parents may drop off children and remain for 5 minutes, then return 5 minutes before the end of class. Thank you for your understanding.
4. If a participant withdraws from a swim class for medical reasons he or she will receive a YMCA credit or refund for the remaining classes, if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.
5. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.
Swim Lessons 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have any questions about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director, at (212) 9122275.

TEEN SWIM
TEEN PROGRAMS
The YMCA helps Youth develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction through five components, Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Stroke Development, Water Games, and Rescue.
YMCA SWIM CLASSES
YMCA Swim Classes allow students to progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curriculum that incorporates the following five components: 1. Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. 2. Personal Growth: In learning new skills students build self-esteem. 5. Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. For more information, contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director, at (212) 912-2275.
TEEN SWIM CLASSES | 12-17 YRS
The swim classes below run 45 minutes in length. Each skill level builds upon the preceding level, covering all the strokes, swimming fundamental, techniques and safety skills. For further information, please contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director at (212) 912-2275.
Beginner This is the beginning level for teens. It gets teens acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball movements.
Intermediate Teens continue to practice and build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. More synchronized swimming and wetball skills are taught.
Advanced This is the initial intermediate skill. Teen further refine the lead-up strokes, they have learned as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming. They learn still more synchronized swimming and wetball. GREENPOINT YMCA | WINTER 2012/ SPRING 2013 | 33
