It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Our Y Kid Zone provides a variety of activities to youth (ages 6 – 11 years) with a family membership, offering a safe place for kids to hang out while their parents work out. Children may visit the Y Kid Zone for up to two hours per day. The parent or guardian must remain in the facility while the child is in Y Kid Zone. This is a FREE service with Family Membership. New Member Orientation
Teen Fitness Center
New to the Y? We offer a FREE fitness orientation with one of our staff for all new members as an introduction to our cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Appointments can be scheduled at The Fitness Center Office.
Adults are welcome to use the Teen Fitness Center at all times during operational hours, although teens have priority on fitness machines and other equipment during the hours of 3:30pm-6:30pm. Teens ages 12-17 are permitted to use the Teen Fitness Center at all times after completing a mandatory training. Teens will receive a stamp on their membership card after completion and should have their card on them while in the fitness area. Teen Fitness Certification is available in the Fitness Center on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 5:30pm and Saturdays at 12:30pm. For their safety, children under the age of 12 are not permitted on the strength or cardio machines. They must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while in the facility, unless they are part of a supervised program. Teens ages 12-17 also are welcome to use the Adult Fitness Center after completing Teen Fitness Orientation. The hours teens are welcome to use the Adult Fitness Center are: Monday-Friday from 3:30pm-6:30pm, and SaturdaySunday from 1:30pm-6:30pm.

Warrior® is a unique practice using Revolutionary Empowerment Disciplines that fuse the mentality and movement of martial arts with the physicality of functional fitness. Similar to the practice of martial arts and yoga, the movement does not change often, rather the participants understanding of the movement evolves. SilverSneakers® Classic Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, knowing when to ask for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. Parents are given guidance on how to develop their children’s abilities and how to protect their children from harm in, on, and around the water; children are given the chance to explore a new environment and to build skills that add to their self-confidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience that lets them learn and have fun together in the water. The skills taught in the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program center around five main components: • Personal safety: Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both the child and the family, including boating safety. • Personal growth: Activities that help the child and the family grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development. • Stroke development: Activities that help develop swimming abilities so participants can move in the water safely. • Water sports and games: Activities that help develop an appreciation of aquatic activities that may last a lifetime, including age-appropriate games and songs. • Rescue: Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies. MARTIAL ARTS The YMCA’s Martial Arts program combines fitness, selfdefense, sport, meditation, discipline, character development and self-confidence. Join us for these progressive programs, make new friends and have fun! Tae Kwon Do participants are required to wear a uniform during class.
Tae Kwon Do (Ages 4 – 14 years) A Korean martial art similar to karate, Tae Kwon Do emphasizes kicking, striking and blocking as applied to the art of self-defense. YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating a positive experience that will last a lifetime. The YMCA helps youth and teens develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. This is the beginning level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball movements.
The children continue to practice and build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. More synchronized swimming and wetball skills are taught, as well as some diving skills.

Youth/Adolescent Anger Management is open to youth (ages 5 – 11) and adolescents (ages 12 – 17). Anger
Management is a 12-week program that seeks to reduce anger and improve coping skills in our young people. This program is designed to combat unhealthy core beliefs, promote responsible behavior and enhance quality of life. There is a nominal fee for this program.
Parenting Skills is a 12-week program aimed at enhancing knowledge and
understanding of the multi-faceted issues involved in parenting. These classes take an in-depth look at child development, communication, discipline, child/family health, learning/play, stress, nutrition, budget, substance abuse, family violence and teen behavior. There is a nominal fee for this program.
Family Association is open to the community and is a network of parents, spouses, guardians and other family members. This group meets weekly, providing a supportive venue where individuals can learn new skills for dealing with the complex issues associated with living with a family member’s addiction.
Adult Programs help chemically-dependent adults work toward recovery from
addiction through group and individual treatment. This not only means accepting their struggles with substances, but also facing the relationship problems, economic hardships or personal issues that may be contributing to their use of drugs and/or alcohol. Adult services include programming for individuals struggling with mental health and substance use disorders as well as those utilizing medication to support their recovery efforts.

If you are at high risk for type 2 diabetes, this program can help you adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles that will help you reduce your chances of developing diabetes.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over the course of 16 one-hour sessions. After the initial 16 core sessions, participants meet monthly for added support to help them maintain their progress.
PROGRAM GOALS:
• Reduce body weight by 7% • Increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week

3. If there’s a problem with any of the equipment or the facility, please let a staff person know. If there’s an incident or accident, contact a uniformed staff person immediately. 4. Be safe. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear. (Open-toed shoes, over-restrictive or street clothes are not allowed.) Have a spotter help you with free weights. Warm up before and cool down after exercise. Make sure you’ve had enough to eat and drink before exercising to prevent dizziness or lightheadedness. If you are experiencing dizziness, pain or unusual discomfort at any time, stop the exercise and ask staff for help.
10. Hang it up. For your safety and in consideration for others, please refrain from cell phone use while in the fitness facilities.
Everyone’s safety is important to us, especially children. We ask that all abide by our pool guidelines. Street shoes are not allowed on the pool deck.
2. Everyone in the pool must wear a swim cap. 3. Children 8 years old and younger must be within arm’s length of a parent/adult guardian when in the pool. Children between the ages of 9 and 11 must have a parent/adult guardian on the pool deck or viewing area at all times.
6. Any child wearing a flotation device must remain in the shallow area. Backpacks/bubbles and lifejackets are provided as a flotation device to non-swimmers.

Infants and children who are not fully toilet-trained must wear a swim diaper.
8. Intentional hyperventilation and competitive underwater breath holding are not permitted as they may result in the person blacking out. 9. Inflatable rings, balls, noodles or other large pool toys are not permitted. 10. Instructional swim aids (kick boards/barbells/pull buoys/noodles) are only for class use. 11. All questions regarding the Aquatics policies/ procedures should be directed to the Aquatics Director or Executive Director.

YMCA membership is available to all persons regardless of race, religion, gender, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or financial circumstances. The YMCA welcomes families and persons of all ages, income levels, and physical conditions with an emphasis on responsibility and self-improvement.
MEMBERSHIP GUARANTEE Membership in the YMCA is fully guaranteed. Members who are not completely satisfied with their YMCA membership are entitled to a refund of any unused portion of their membership. Joiner fees are not refundable.

MEMBERSHIP TRANSFER Membership and program privileges are not transferable from one person to another. Membership may be transferred from one branch to another within the YMCA of Greater New York.
MEMBERSHIP HOLDS/CREDITS Members may put their membership on hold for 1 - 3 months during any calendar year. A monthly hold fee will be charged and all membership privileges will be surrendered while your membership is on hold. Medical holds are available with written documentation from a physician. With proper documentation, medical holds can be granted up to 1 year. There will be no credits for scheduled holidays, snow days or other weather conditions beyond our control.

No credit will be granted after the second week. In addition, credit will not be given for classes not attended and there will not be class make-ups unless the YMCA cancels or postpones a class. There will be no make-ups for scheduled holidays, snow days or other weather conditions beyond our control.

The following group exercise classes are FREE and UNLIMITED to YMCA members! We are family friendly. Youth over the age of 12 are welcome with parental consent or parental participation. AOA (Active Older Adult) Cardio Conditioning A gentle aerobic workout especially for older adults, or anyone who would like to include a low-intensity, low-impact workout in their fitness plans. AOA Sit Fit Get fit while you sit in this chair exercise class that involves a combination of aerobic activity, strength building and stretching. Barre Fusion Barre Fusion is a total body conditioning program that blends classical ballet exercises and Pilates with a special focus on core fitness. Enjoy a fun, invigorating workout that develops muscular endurance, dynamic balance, flexibility and of course, core strength. Boot Camp A challenging workout for your entire body, using calisthenics such as pushups, jumping jacks, crunches and other body weight exercises. Cardio Circuit This efficient and challenging form of cardio training uses a variety of exercises and workout stations. The YMCA helps adults develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, knowing when to ask for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. The Staten Island Broadway YMCA presents NYC’s FREE fullday PRE-K FOR ALL, a quality program five days a week that is open to members and non-members of the Y! PARENT & CHILD: WATER ENRICHMENT & AQUATIC READINESS [AGES 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS]
Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. Parents are given guidance on how to develop their children’s abilities and how to protect their children from harm in, on, and around the water; children are given the chance to explore a new environment and to build skills that add to their self-confidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience that lets them learn and have fun together in the water. The skills taught in the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program center around five main components: • Personal safety: Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both the child and the family, including boating safety. • Personal growth: Activities that help the child and the family grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development. • Stroke development: Activities that help develop swimming abilities so participants can move in the water safely. • Water sports and games: Activities that help develop an appreciation of aquatic activities that may last a lifetime, including age-appropriate games and songs. • Rescue: Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies. The Broadway YMCA will run two 4-week sessions this summer to accomodate summer schedules. Summer Session 1 will run from Monday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 30th, and Summer Session 2, will run from Monday July 31st through Sunday August 27th. The Broadway YMCA is proud to offer the Y-MVP Teen Fitness Challenge, an innovative eight-week program designed to stimulate teens to increase their daily levels of Moderate to Vigorous Physical activity. Adopting game design techniques, New York City’s YMCA has created an app – combined with dynamic digital badges and fun fitness activities – that motivates, recognizes and rewards young people’s MVP levels while helping them to create life-long healthy habits. Teen Fitness Center Usage/Youth 101 Teens (ages 12-14 years with a membership) may use the Fitness Center unaccompanied by an adult on weekdays from 3:00pm-6:00pm and 1:00pm-7:00pm on the weekends. Before using the Fitness Center equipment, teens must return the Parental Permission slip & Code of Conduct agreement signed by both parent and teen and attend two mandatory Youth 101 Certifications.
A nationally recognized core YMCA teen program that provides participants with opportunities for leadership training, personal growth, service to others and social development. Teens meet on a weekly basis in small groups, working closely with their peers and an adult advisor on skill and character building activities, as well as planning and organizing projects with an emphasis on educational success, community service and goal-setting. Teens Take the City (Ages 12 – 17 years) This civic engagement program explores government at the local level. High School students identify issues in their community, then work on proposals to address those issues. Teens present their proposals at City Hall at the end of the program. YMCA Global Teens (Ages 14 – 18 years) This leadership development program engages teens (ages 14-18 for overseas program and 12-14 for US program) in the powerful adventure of global exploration. Program elements include meaningful service projects, youth-to-youth interaction, home stays, and awareness of cultural and social issues. Teens serve as cultural ambassadors to their host country during an intensive 2-week group service trip, and are asked to communicate their experiences to their local communities upon returning home.
Friday Night Teen Center (Ages 12 – 17 years) Teen Center is a safe place where teens have the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities that allow them to develop socially, physically and academically. Activities include: sports, nutrition, arts, fitness, swim, STEM and special guest presentations. A healthy snack is provided. Teen Center is FREE and typically runs the first three Fridays of each month, September to June. Pre-registration required prior to Friday. Check the Member Service Desk for upcoming dates. The Broadway YMCA is proud to offer a new 8-week SAT/PSAT Test Prep Class for Staten Island students. The class is taught by Terrance Toner, who brings more than 15 years of SAT/PSAT Test Prep experience to the Broadway YMCA. Class is held Saturdays OR Sundays from 8:30am-10am. YOUTH AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing selfesteem and creating a positive experience that will last a lifetime. The YMCA helps youth and teens develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. The Broadway YMCA will run two 4-week sessions this summer to accomodate summer schedules. Summer Session 1 will run from Monday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 30th, and Summer Session 2, will run from Monday July 31st through Sunday August 27th. Swim Testing
Progressive-level learn-to-swim classes are divided by skill. Please do not register your child for any of the following classes unless he/she has been swim tested or promoted within our program prior to registration. Swim Testing is held Tuesday – Friday at 5:30pm and Saturday at 3:15pm. Please have your child on the pool deck ready to swim within 15 minutes of the beginning of testing. PROGRESSIVE-LEVEL SWIMMING INSTRUCTION Polliwog Beginner (Ages 6 - 12 years) This is the beginning level for school-age children. It gets children acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball movements. Broadway Guppy Advanced Beginner, Level I (Ages 6 - 12 years) The children continue to practice and build upon basic skills, now performing more skills without the aid of a flotation device. They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. More synchronized swimming and wetball skills are taught, as well as some diving skills. Shark Advanced, Level I (Ages 6 - 12 years) The students at this level continue to improve their strokes, with starts and turns, and are introduced to the inverted breaststroke, the crawl, and the overarm sidestroke. Porpoise Advanced, Level II (Ages 6 - 12 years) At this final level, students are exposed to a wide range of aquatic experiences through a class and club format. Flying Fish Intermediate, Level II (Ages 6 - 12 years) At this advanced level, students work on refining their strokes and increasing their endurance. They develop the ability to perform more complex combinations of synchronized swimming movements, learn to dive off a one-meter board, and develop better wetball playing skills. EXPERIENCE & SKILL-DEVELOPMENT CLASSES Competitive Skills & Drills (Ages 7 - 15 years) In this class we build stamina and improve mastery of the four competitive strokes: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. We offer a variety of workouts with an instructor on deck. Workouts swim an average of about 1,000 to 2,000 yards. The lanes vary by the swimmers’ ability and speed. This is not a “learn to swim” program, but we do offer the opportunity for all levels to receive instruction on technique. Lifeguard Course Become a YMCA certified lifeguard. This extensive training includes CPR/AED, First Aid and Administering Emergency Oxygen certifications, along with the course books. During this class you will work on current skills while engaging in the lifeguard prerequisites. • Tread water for 2 minutes (legs only) • Swim 100 yards of front crawl • Swim 50 yards of each: 1. Front crawl with the head up 2. Sidestroke 3. Breaststroke 4. Breaststroke with the head up 5. Elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest This course is for teens ages 16 and up. Pretests will be held Wednesdays April 19th and August 23rd at 5:30pm requires a $25 nonrefundable test fee. A passing grade will result in credit of test fee toward course cost. Member: $380
