Y-MVP: GETTING TEENS TO MOVE The Prospect Park Y and Park Slope Armory Y recently launched the Y-MVP Fitness Challenge, an antiobesity initiative geared towards teens from the ages of 12-17 years old. Y-MVP (Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity) is an innovative eight-week training program that uses game-like activities to help teens become and stay physically active. The program teaches teens what they need to know to develop good workout routines, regardless of athletic ability. The knowledge and skills acquired in this program will serve as a base to create long-lasting fitness habits. MVP runs during out of school hours for eight-weeks. Teens meet with their coach once a week for 60 minutes and are expected to complete a “fitness mission” in between classes, using an app that serves as a workout tracker and allows users to collect special badges to advance along and complete the Challenge, with the help from a Y-MVP fitness coach.

FAMILY FUN NIGHTS Something for the whole family!

Looking for something fun for the whole family to do? We offer Family Fun Community Events one Saturday per month. Our next event is Healthy Kids Day! DATE: Saturday, April 26th TIME: 10:00am-4:00pm LOCATION: Park Slope Armory YMCA

For more information visit: ymcanyc.org/parkslopearmory

Chrissy Baker, Y-MVP Coordinator for both locations, is impressed with the program since its launch in February. “The curriculum keeps our teens on their toes and the technology engages them in a way they understand. It’s a progressive program that not only teaches teens proper workout routines and fitness etiquette, but builds their self esteem, leadership skills needed to continue a healthy lifestyle even after the program is complete,” she says. Registration for the next session starting April 4th is now open. Applications are available at the Front Desk, or secure a spot by contacting Jamel Davis at jdavis@ymcanyc.org for the Park Slope Armory Y, or Sandy Phillips at cphillips@ymcanyc.org for Prospect Park. The program is free, but availability is limited.

PS 107 FUN RUN

TRAINER SPOTLIGHT

Park Slope Armory YMCA partners with PS 107 to give back to the community

Meet Dean Brown, Park Slope Armory Y Personal Trainer

On Saturday, February 8, over 200 students from PS 107 and their families ran the Third Annual Family Fitness Fun Run 5k at the Park Slope Armory YMCA, proudly raising over $5,000 in support of the Prospect Park YMCA’s Annual Campaign. The speedy students are the Park Slope Armory YMCA’s youngest advocates for the Annual Campaign, and they encourage each other to obtain donations and create awareness so that local youth, individuals and families in need of financial assistance have access to the programs and services the Y offers. The Armory serves as PS 107’s Physical Education space weekly, for this local school and others, and this was just one way for the students to give back. Tommy Vines, a PS 107 student and track team member, said, “The Y is a very important place. It’s my track home away from home! It is a big part of me.” The Prospect Park YMCA and Park Slope Armory YMCA raise community funds and awareness through the Annual Campaign, formerly the Strong Kids Campaign, which helps level the playing field by providing free and low cost programming and financial assistance to those in need. The 2014 Annual Campaign goal is $210,000 to continue providing: free teen civic and leadership programs; financial assistance to over half of the 1,000 kids enrolled in Y Summer Day Camp; free educational and cultural programs for immigrants at the New Americans Welcome Center; free Y Afterschool to over 400 public school students; discounted memberships to those in need; and so much more. Y Personal Trainer, Dean Brown is far more than just a fitness specialist. As a trainer at the Armory since 2012, his job as a fitness professional is not just to direct an exercise session but he strives to teach his clients the principals of functional movements, proper nutrition and overall healthy lifestyle. “My main goal for my clients is fitness autonomy: the process of becoming self motivated, independent, self reliable when exercising.” Currently training for the 2016 Olympic trials, his certifications include the NSCA-CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), NASM-PES (Performance Enhancement Specialist) and USA-W weight lifting performance coach. Dean’s training approach may be the extra push you need in your workout routine to see long-term results. To meet Dean and all of our Y Personal Trainers, or for rates at each location, please visit our websites or contact Sandy Phillips for the Armory at cphillips@ymcanyc.org, and Sheldon Howard for Prospect Park at showard@ymcanyc.org.
