YMCA of Greater New York Hosts Splash Week

Teen Center Hosts Surfing Event at Vanderbilt

In April 2014, Splash Week will return to the Vanderbilt YMCA. The YMCA of Greater New York which includes Y branches in the 5 boroughs will be hosting Splash Week, a unique series of Aquatics classes offered to children and families at the Y who want to learn how to swim and feel safe around water. YMCA Splash Week is a FREE program created to help people of all ages, especially children, to learn basic swimming skills and water safety practices. This builds self-confidence and self-esteem which carries over into other parts of life. During Splash Week swimmers learn about the Y’s holistic approach combining spirit, mind and body.

Teens pose with surf instructors from New York Surf School in Far Rockaway and Maria Hinojosa of NPR Radio Show, Latino USA.

Who says the Y doesn’t surf? On February 19th the Vanderbilt Y hosted a one of a kind event. In conjunction with NPR’s Radio Show, Latino USA, The REI Foundation and The New York Surf School, 20 New York City teens were introduced to surfing culture. The REI Foundation focuses on getting more youth of color into nature by providing grants. Participants were treated to a brief history of surfing and given the opportunity to hop on a board to learn the basics. In addition to having a lot of fun, the teens learned about opportunities in the water in places like Rockaway Beach, and how to be safe. 2
