WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

Improving our community’s health and well-being In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of—and strengthening—our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

PRE-K PROGRAMS

LEARN & GROW PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS GREENPOINT Y EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Toddler & Little Kid | Ages 2 – 5 years* The Early Childhood Center at the Greenpoint Y focuses on the developmental needs of each child in order to foster intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. Using play-based learning techniques, children are able to explore the environment safely as they experiment with handson activities. Learning takes place daily in science, math, literacy, dramatic play, art, and sensory centers. Physical development is a large component addressed through swim lessons (for those 3 and up), yoga, structured gym activities, free play, and trips to local parks. Children are encouraged to move throughout the day as they become more and more confident in their motor control. Our dedicated staff is trained using the latest research in early childhood education which is applied in our daily lessons. The role of the teachers is to guide children’s collaboration with peers and to provoke creative thinking.

Shrimp | 6-8 Months This is an introduction to the aquatic environment for parents and their infants. They learn basic aquatic safety and have a positive experience with their children that can help them grow closer.

Kipper | 9-12 Months This level continues to provide positive aquatic experiences for parents and infants. The infants learn basic water skills and have fun playing with toys and flotation devices. Parents review and learn more about basic aquatic safety.

Inia | 13-18 Months Children do more independent exploration of the aquatic environment with help from parents. The parents again review and learn additional information about aquatic safety. The program provides opportunities for parent-child teams to socialize with each other.

Perch | 19-36 Months Children start moving more independently through the water under their parents’ guidance. IS YOUR SCHOOL PART OF THE YMCA’S SWIM FOR LIFE-2ND GRADE SWIM? Second grade is an ideal time for young people to take on new challenges, learn more skills and enhance their feelings of mastery and competence. Through Swim for Life, the YMCA of Greater New York seeks to offer children lessons in swimming skills and water safety that will keep them safe and build physical and social skills.

Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim works to build on student’s aquatic skills, while enhancing self-confidence and well-being. Classes run in ten-week cycles during the academic year during school hours. Children are brought to their school’s local YMCA by school personnel who will remain with them throughout the changing process and at the pool area during swim lessons. Swim for Life-2nd Grade Swim students progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curriculum that incorporates the following five components: 1. Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around the water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. 2. Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. 3. Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. 4. Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. 5. Rescue: Students learn safety techniques-knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. For more information, please contact Jessica Wygand at (212) 912-2275.

Y SCHOOLS PROGRAM AT PS84 | GRADES K-5 Y Schools is a new program model that establishes a full-time Y presence in New York City schools. Beyond the presence of our existing Y After School Academy, Y Schools offer enhanced programs and services that extend from the opening school bell to day’s end with a focus on improving student academic performance. Each Y School will be centered upon a dynamic partnership with the school leadership and be focused on building a comprehensive set of services for children and families. This community school approach will leverage public and private resources and include partnerships with local community based organizations. During the school year, the YMCA will work with city schools to develop the Y Schools model. Some of those schools are PS 84 in Williamsburg, PS 197 in Far Rockaway, PS 57 on Staten Island and PS 200 in Harlem. Y staff has been working with school leadership at each school to identify key issues in the school and develop concrete strategies to drive improvement. Some of the core services that will be established at these schools include:

14 | GREENPOINT Y FALL 2014

YOUTH PROGRAMS • Providing Support for English Language Learners The Y will work with the school to provide additional support for English language learners both in the classroom and in afterschool. Through the Y’s work in launching six New American Welcome Centers and the Harlem Literacy Zone project for New Americans, the Y has strong capacity and experience in the area of family literacy.

• Parent and Caregiver Support Services The principal and teachers have identified parent and caregiver engagement as one of the primary barriers to student success. While there is an organization providing support services for parents in the school, there is the opportunity for the Y to provide specific services to engage parents in the academic lives of their children. These will range from having parents attend culminating events for afterschool to ongoing workshops on topics from children’s health to parenting workshops.

• Improving the School Learning Environment There is the opportunity for the Y to have an immediate impact on the school learning environment through the development of structured programs before school, during recess and lunch time. This has been identified as a critical need by the schools and is an opportunity to build relationships that would support extended learning. In addition, the Y is working at PS 197 (TASC ExpandED) and PS 84 (Y USA Pilot Program) on pilot projects that focus on building strong academic outcomes through extended learning.

TEEN PROGRAMS CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Global Teens | Ages 14-18

January-August | This dynamic youth program challenges teens to engage in the powerful journey of global exploration. Teen participants accomplish this through meeting teens and adults from their host country, participating in meaningful service, and learning about different cultures through a short-term immersion experience. Global Teens strives to promote peace, tolerance and cultural understanding, while encouraging teens to become true global citizens. Global Teens is not just an opportunity to travel, but rather a challenging and boundary-pushing opportunity to challenge one’s view of the world and to expand the horizons of what is possible.

Leaders Club | Ages 14-18

October - June | The Greenpoint YMCA Leaders Club focuses on building intrinsic leadership in all of our club members. Teens Take The City | Ages 14-18

TEEN PROGRAMS SPECIALTY PROGRAMS

BETAgirls | 11th & 12th Grade Girls

September - May | BETAgirls Program, a new program piloting at the Greenpoint Y this fall, focuses on teaching STEM concepts to young women in their junior and/or senior year of high school. Young women deserve all of the opportunities available to them. Nine of the ten fastest-growing occupations require STEM skills sets - skills that today’s young women are not often encouraged to pursue. The YMCA’s BETAGirls program addresses this issue by educating young women in science, technology, engineering and math. The BETAgirls program sets girls on a course to be both leaders and successful in the jobs of tomorrow. BETAgirls is being piloted at the Greenpoint Y branch for the Fall of 2014.

What is BETAgirls? BETAgirls is an afterschool program that provides students with hands-on experiences, supplemented by educational and in-person learning opportunities. Students will: • Receive a $500 stipend to buy new technology, pay for college, or invest in their business • Receive additional technological incentives like new laptops and other software • Earn college credits and develop in-demand skills that

look great on their resume • Network with STEM leaders and gain exposure to connections for potential career opportunities • Gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology and prepare for careers in music production, graphic design and mobile application development – just to name a few.

About the BETAgirls Program With the Support of the MasterCard Foundation, the BETAgirls program will engage young women in learning more about the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) field, increase their STEM knowledge and skills, while developing their business acumen and desire to engage in entrepreneurship. BETAgirls is open to rising 11th grade and 12th grade YMCA participants that are currently enrolled in public high school in New York City. During the school year, the program will operate in two sessions: Session I: “Building Blocks” (September 1, 2014 - December 23, 2014) - The first session will focus on challenging perceptions and exposing young women to STEM and/or business in the academic realm. Participants will get to choose to enroll in either a business course (e.g., Introduction to Business), or a computer science course (e.g., Computer Programming I) through the CUNY College Now

INTERNATIONAL SERVICES GROWING OUR FUTURE GLOBAL LEADERS The YMCA offers life-changing cultural exchange programs for young people globally. Working within the YMCA network – with our local, national and international partners – we bring people together through our various programs: Y GLOBAL TEENS, Y GLOBAL LEADERS, Y-TO-Y PARTNERSHIPS, UN RELATIONS, AND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS. Since 1911, our programs have been working to build global citizens by enhancing mutual understanding, fostering the exchange of ideas, and bringing people together for peace.

Students will also be required to attend a weekly meeting on Tuesdays to talk about their academic progress and work through the “Girls Who Code” Curriculum. Session II: “Technovation Challenge” (January 28, 2015-May 4, 2015) - The second session will focus on experiential learning. Participants will form groups of 2-3 students and, meeting twice a week over the course of 12 weeks, they will develop and write a business plan focused on the design and development of a mobile app along with mentors in the tech industry. Students will complete in the “Technovation Challenge” with a chance to win $10,000 in seed funding to bring their app to market and a trip to World Pitch Night 2014 in San Francisco to compete on the global stage. Throughout the program, BETAgirls will visit STEM focused colleges/universities like: University of Maryland, Rochester Institute of Technology, Carnegie Melon, etc. They will also visit tech companies such as: Microsoft, Google and smaller startups. All students that participate will receive a $500 MasterCard Tech Grant ($250 at the end of each session). In addition, Tech Awards like laptops and software will be given to students in recognition of categories like, Best Business Plan, Greatest Social Impact App. For more information, please contact our Teen & Sports Director, Florentina Weiss at (212) 912-2269 or at fweiss@ymcanyc.org.

TEENSWIM

The YMCA helps youth develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction through five components: Personal Safety, Personal Growth, Stroke Development, Water Games, and Rescue.

YMCA SWIM CLASSES

YMCA swim classes allow students to progress through a scientifically-based national YMCA curriculum that incorporates the following five components:

builds upon the preceding level, covering all the strokes, swimming fundamental, techniques and safety skills. Ratios from 1:8-1:12.

Teen Beginner

1. Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught.

This class is for teens who have not had swimming lessons before or are not comfortable in the water. Basic swimming and water safety skills are taught in a fun, relaxed way.

2. Personal Growth: In learning new skills students build selfesteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety.

Teens are acquainted with the pool, the use of flotation devices, and front and back floating. By the end of this level, they should know the front paddle stroke, side and back paddle, and some synchronized swimming and wetball movements.

5. Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. For more information, contact Jessica Wygand, Aquatics Director, at (212) 912-2275.
