GROWING STRONG YOUTH PROGRAMS

The Rockaway YMCA provides after school, day and weekend programming for youth up to 18 years. We offer a host of programs that promote healthy spirit, mind and body through intellectual, social and recreational activities. Class Fees Member Non-Member

Jazz Dance (5 - 8 Years) Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns.

Hip Hop (9 - 12 Years) Hip hop is a lifestyle that includes its own language, music, wardrobe style and style of dance. Hip hop dance combines elements of popping, locking, breaking, boogaloo, funk and street dance that gives dancers the confidence to improv and move their body to any beat.

Martial Arts (8 - 12 Years) Martial Arts explores the traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. Flag Football Y Flag Football is a fast-paced, non-contact football league. Our focus is on the fundamentals of football, teamwork and fair play. Rules are modified for age groups to ensure fun and success. Youth develop our skills while learning how to work together as a team. Our focus is on passing and running the football. Youth Boot Camp (8 - 11 Years) Through our boot camp program we empower children to lead healthy lives by introducing them to fun, physical activity and smart eating choices. Time

Little Tykes (6 months - 7 Years) This program focuses on familiarizing youngsters with various games and activities. Little Tykes operates as an orientation to school age games and sports. TEEN PROGRAMS 12-17 YEARS

Teens Take The City Teens Take the City is a dynamic leadership development program that offers NYC teens the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get involved in issues affecting them and their community. Teens engage in community mapping to figure out how to better their community, work in small groups to identify a law to address the issue, develop a policy proposal that is debated for other teens at City Hall, learn the history and function of NYC government, and meet and interview a NYC official. Once students have developed a policy proposal, they will implement their initiatives in their community through youth-lead service learning activities. Talk about social responsibility at its best. Free for members and non-members. Performing Arts The Performing Arts Club provides teens of all backgrounds and experience levels the opportunity to work with acting, dance, and musical theater professionals to develop skills in singing, acting, and choreography. The Performing Arts Club is made up of teens ages 12 through 17 who learn and grow together as an ensemble. Together they grow, learn, and develop talents that will progress them in future ventures. Free for members and non-members. Young Professionals

The Young Professionals program is designed to help teens pursue higher educational and career goals. Through career exploration, resume building lessons, and practice interviews, the Young Professionals program helps youth raise their professional standards, develop a positive sense of self, build character, explore diverse college and career options, and meet and interact with professionals who serve as role models to inspire them to greater heights. Free for members and non-members.

Tutoring Does your child need a little extra help preparing for that big exam or just completing their homework assignments? Homework help and learning center is available at select Ys. Global Teens YMCA Global Teens is a leadership development and service learning program that engages teens in a year-long empowering international experience culminating with a summer service abroad experience.

Leaders Club You can meet many of tomorrow’s leaders today in our leadership incubation program that gives teens the opportunity to improve their leadership and social skills, while giving back to the community. Teens meet on a weekly basis in small groups to develop and implement projects aimed at providing valuable service to their local community. Free for members and nonmembers. NYPD Explorers Club

Law Enforcement Exploring is a community service, careeroriented program designed to educate young men and women about Law Enforcement. Exploring reaches out to New York City’s young adults in every community to help build up relations between the community and New York City Police Department. Explorers are taught the importance of higher education, self discipline, and respect for authority while they actively participate in community service projects and other Exploring events. Free for members and non-members.

Teen Dance

Teen Dance allows adolescents the opportunity to receive quality instruction and explore various genres of dance in a safe and encouraging environment. Dancers can explore all types of movement including modern, ballet, hip hop, jazz, step and much more. Free for members and non-members.

Teen Center Teen Centers is a fun and safe place for teens to socialize, exercise and have positive interaction with peers and YMCA counselors. Teen Center is open to teens from local communities and offers activities such as athletic recreation, games, computers, fitness, arts and discussion groups.

Y-MVP

Y-MVP is a FREE 8-week program that combines fun fitness activities with an interactive app. Classes are led by a Y-MVP fitness coach once a week for 90 minutes. Participants can work out in a program uniquely designed for teens, earn prizes for completing fitness missions, gain access to the fitness center during teen hours, use an app to track their workouts, improve strength and endurance, and level up to unlock a Y-an MVP teen membership! Free for members and non-members.

Above the Rim Basketball Team (12 -14 Years)

Take your skills to the next level by competing against the best talent in NYC. Participate in practices led by experienced coaches and trainers and compete against local basketball teams while polishing your game.

The New York Knicks, YMCA of Greater New York, Sprite and Chase, partnered to give youth a chance to play organized basketball in a tournament format. The Junior Knicks League consists of age appropriate instruction, skill development, and tournament play.

The Rockaway YMCA is offering a free program for cancer survivors. This program is open to all. This program is designed for adult cancer survivors who have recently become deconditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or from the disease itself. The goal of the program is to help participants build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Participants will develop their own physical fitness programs so they can continue to build a healthy lifestyle. Y FIT START

The Y Fit Start Program (Formerly Y Personal Fitness) is 12 weeks of individual exercise designed for new and returning exercisers. During the 12 weeks, you will have 4 appointments with a Y Fit Start Coach to provide you with personal attention and extra motivation to help keep you on track. Y Fit Start provides a structured, sensible fitness routine, gradually adding new exercises at each meeting. These small changes will lead to greater success in achieving your health goals. During this time, you can exercise at the YMCA anytime that fits into your own schedule.

Y MVP

A new component of the successful Strong Kids Card program, the Y-MVP Teen Fitness Challenge is an innovative digital game designed to stimulate teens to increase their daily levels of Moderate to Vigorous Physical activity. Adopting online game design techniques, New York City’s YMCA has created an app with a dynamic badge system that motivates, recognizes and rewards young people’s MVP levels while helping them to create life-long healthy habits.

TEEN ORIENTATION

To start your teen’s fitness experience off on the right foot, we require a teen orientation. This orientation is catered to teens and will teach them gym etiquette, the proper use of equipment and to work out in a safe manner. We encourage the family to work out together but we allow teens ages 14 through 17, unaccompanied, to work out during teen fitness center hours.

Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music, utilizing dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting and effective fitness program. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body.

Total Body Conditioning

A full body workout designed to strengthen and tone the upper and lower body.

Pilates

Focus on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. This class benefits everyone at every fitness level.

Yoga

Integrates postures, breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation to stretch, strengthen, and condition. All levels are welcome.

Gentle Yoga

Kickboxing

This high energy class combines muscle conditioning with kickboxing combinations of punches and kicks in a variety of drills, exercises and self-defense techniques.

This is a simple and relaxing class mostly on the mat to eliminate getting up and down. Class incorporates many breathing exercises and is suitable for beginners and active older adults.

Tabata™

Boot Camp

An efficient circuit training workout that challenges your entire body, utilizing calisthenics such as pushups, jumping jacks, crunches and other body weight exercises.

Core Connection

Focuses on abdominal, back and core muscle training and stabilization to improve the body’s overall functional strength.

Spinning®

A great cardio workout of simulated road bike riding to energizing music, appropriate for all fitness levels.

Kettlebell

This is a total body workout that blends effective techniques for improving muscular endurance, total body movements and cardiovascular conditioning. Each movement and progression is taught with an emphasis on safety, while highlighting essential body alignment.

High intensity interval training consisting of performing specifically chosen exercises at an ultra-high intensity for 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest. Tabata™ workouts are short in duration and designed to boost post exercise caloric burn so your metabolism keeps burning calories after the exercise is over.

Masterfitness Complete™

Get everything you need in this class! Combines low impact aerobics, conditioning and stretching in a comfortable environment. Beginners and Active Older Adults welcome.

Tai Chi

An ancient form of mind body exercise that uses purposeful, slow movements in a form of meditative exercise for relaxation, health and self-defense.

Chair Exercise

Aerobics, strength training and stretching performed seated in a chair. Class includes coordination, agility and balance training in a fun and supportive environment.

Interval Training

A challenging class of high speed, high intensity work alternating with recovery periods of low intensity.
