WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Improving our community’s health and well-being
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body. The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.
We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

ADULT AQUATICS PROGRAMS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org.
ADULT SWIM INSTRUCTION The YMCA helps adults develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, knowing when to ask for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS Y EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT The YMCA believes that a quality program should provide enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each individual child by working in partnership with families. YMCA Early Childhood Development programs, licensed by the New York City Department of Health, provide a nurturing environment where children’s natural curiosity is a springboard to learning skills that are necessary for success in school. Children learn how to share, take turns and work in groups. They also develop age-appropriate skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics. Imaginative play, art projects and hands-on experience will spark your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong, positive values. For additional information, or to arrange a tour, contact Allison Sicuranza, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 981-4933 or asicuranza@ymcanyc.org.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org.
PARENT & CHILD: WATER ENRICHMENT & AQUATIC READINESS [AGES 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS]
Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. Parents are given guidance on how to develop their children’s abilities and how to protect their children from harm in, on, and around the water; children are given the chance to explore a new environment and to build skills that add to their self-confidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience that lets them learn and have fun together in the water. The skills taught in the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program center around five main components: • Personal safety: Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both the child and the family, including boating safety. • Personal growth: Activities that help the child and the family grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development. • Stroke development: Activities that help develop swimming abilities so participants can move in the water safely. • Water sports and games: Activities that help develop an appreciation of aquatic activities that may last a lifetime, including age-appropriate games and songs. • Rescue: Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies. YOUTH & TEEN AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing selfesteem and creating a positive experience that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org. The YMCA helps youth and teens develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. IT’S ABOUT THE WHOLE PERSON HEALTH & WELL-BEING FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The Y and LIVESTRONG joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The researchbased program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

ADULT AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org.
EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS
Y EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
The YMCA believes that a quality program should provide enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. For additional information, or to arrange a tour, call Bonnie Schiuma, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 227-3200 or bschiuma@ymcanyc.org.
Pre-K 3 (Nursery School, Age 3 years)

To register, parents are required to complete a registration form and pay a $100 non-refundable deposit that will be applied toward tuition payments. The amounts below represent one payment. EARLY CHILDHOOD AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org.
Shrimp (Ages 6 – 8 months)
Perch (Ages 19 months – 3 years)
This is an introduction to the aquatic environment for parents and their infants. Parents are encouraged to develop appropriate expectations for their children’s performance in the water. They learn basic aquatic safety and have a positive experience with their children that can help them grow closer. *Children must wear a swim diaper.
Children start moving more independently through the water under their parents’ guidance. Parents learn more about aquatic and boating safety, and children begin to learn something about these topics as well. At this point the instructor begins to prepare the children to work directly with an instructor on their own. *Children who are not toilet-trained must wear a swim diaper.

At this level, children usually begin attending classes without their parents. However, for those who are not yet ready to do so we offer this adjustment level. YOUTH & TEEN AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating a positive experience that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org. The YMCA helps youth and teens develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists.
