LEARN GROW THRIVE STATEN ISLAND YMCA FALL 2011

WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Improving our community’s health and well-being

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

GET ENGAGED We know firsthand how difficult it can be to find balance in life. That’s why we’re here with you every day, making sure that you, your family and our community have the resources and support needed to learn, grow and thrive. With a focus on developing the potential of kids, improving health and well-being, and giving back and supporting our neighbors, your participation will not just bring about meaningful change in yourself, but in your community too. Here are some of the ways you can get involved. MEMBERSHIP Join the Staten Island YMCA and become part of a community committed to helping you and your kids learn, grow and thrive. Y members receive full access to the facility’s Fitness Center, Gym and Locker rooms; priority registration for classes and programs; discounts on classes and programs with a fee; and six guest passes each year to share with friends. The option for a Borough-wide membership allows you to use any of the other YMCAs in the borough – the Broadway and South Shore branches – each of which offers quality facilities and programs... and a swimming pool.

CHILD WATCH Do you need someone to look after your child (ages 6 months-6 years) while you work out? We’re here for you! You may bring your child (for a maximum of 90 minutes per day) to the YMCA Child Watch Program. Kids will enjoy creative play in a fun, safe environment with responsible YMCA staff members. This is a free service available to members only.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood. As a program volunteer, board member or Strong Kids Campaign fundraiser, you can make a difference for our Y and the community as a whole.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES Visit ymcanyc.org/careers for open positions in our staff family at the YMCA or at one of more than 100 sites throughout the five boroughs and at our New York YMCA Camp upstate.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME We’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyone to be turned away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistance for programs or membership. We’re happy to help. We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our annual Strong Kids Campaign. Contributions to Strong Kids enable us to offer a number of our programs and services at low or no cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable. The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility or around the community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyone can be a part of the Y?

Y EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

A confidence, fun-filled class will offer a little something for everyone. Preschoolers will have a great time mixing paints and using crayons and markers, while learning basic drawing skills. An assortment of projects will be made using a variety of fun and creative techniques. Expression and creativity is encouraged!

Children explore numbers and concepts using manipulative, math games and creative projects. Class meets directly after UPK, and the children are brought to class by their Pre-K teachers. Children from other schools are welcome!

The YMCA believes that a quality program should provide enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each individual child by working in partnership with families. YMCA Early Child Development programs, licensed by the New York City Department of Health, provide a nurturing environment where children’s natural curiosity is a springboard to learning skills that are necessary for success in school. Children learn how to share, take turns and work in groups. They also develop ageappropriate skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics. Imaginative play, art projects and hands-on experience will spark your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong, positive values. For additional information, or to arrange a tour, call Allison Sicuranza, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 981-4933 or asicuranza@ymcanyc.org.

A TESTIMONY OF FAMILY RECOVERY Dear YMCA & Families, Three years ago, my husband and I walked into the YMCA feeling helpless, hopeless and petrified due to the drug addiction of our oldest son. We did not know where or who to turn to, or what to do. Our hearts were broken. Diligently, I attended your meetings on Wednesday nights, listening, sharing and absorbing all that I could. Through your hard work with me and my hard work with myself, I have come to better understand the disease of addiction. I am no longer angry at my son, nor am I embarrassed of his disease and the things that it had lead him to do. I have learned to work the tools that you have given me and by doing so, my life has changed for the better. I am able to wake up every day and live life to the fullest, I am able to look at the addict and see my son. I am proud of

each and every day that Michael faces and battles this cunning, baffling, insidious disease, knowing full well that it will be a battle for the rest of his life. So, you ask me what happened that was good this week, THE BEST THING EVER. My son called me at work on July 5th and proudly informed me that he had one year clean. I cried, remembering all that we, as a family, had been through, remembering where we were to where we are now. I told him how proud I was that he is my son, how proud I am of the strength and growth he has shown. He deserves to know that he is worth loving and that I am proud of him, regardless of his past.

that as long as we stay in touch with this disease, we will be better prepared to cope with it. While there are no guarantees that he will remain clean, I know that I will survive, no matter what. I will never give up on my son, nor will I allow the disease of addiction to destroy my life. I urge each and every one of you to keep to work through the tough times and LISTEN, LISTEN to everything that is said and offered. Put into place the things that may seem difficult at first, for in doing so, you are helping your addicted loved one, while setting safe boundaries for yourself. Remain vigilant, stay strong and know that there is hope. Thank you for doing what you do. Love, Karen

In his effort to stay clean, my son will need the love and support of his family. I know

PROGRAM OVERVIEW New Americans Welcome Center offers new Americans, and the community, a safe haven that provides multilingual information, resources and referrals with an array of services including Cultural Orientation, Citizenship Preparation, Job Readiness and Computer Literacy. Little Steps is an expressive art and play therapeutic program for children, ages 4-17, whose lives have been affected by their family’s use of drugs or alcohol. The program offers expressive activities through which children learn to identify and change patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior. Adolescent Programs focus on adolescents and young adults (ages 12-21) who are displaying high risk behaviors and attitudes as well as those teens who are struggling with alcohol and/or drug use. Through group and individual treatment, we work to empower young people to achieve a positive, productive and drug-free lifestyle. Friday Night Club is a positive alternative group that is open to youth ages 11 – 15 who are interested in making their Friday nights fun, interactive and productive. This group will engage youth in Teen Night programming at the YMCA three times per month, an in-house life skills building activity once per month and a trip once monthly. This group is free. Youth/Adolescent Anger Management is open to youth ages 5 – 11 and adolescents ages 12 – 17. Anger Management is a 12-week program which seeks to reduce anger and improve coping skills in our young people. This program is designed to combat unhealthy core beliefs, promote responsible behavior and enhance quality of life. There is a $10 weekly fee for this program. Parenting Skills is a 12-week program aimed at enhancing knowledge and understanding of the multi-faceted issues involved in parenting. These classes take an in-depth look at child development, communication, discipline, child/family health, learning/play, stress, nutrition, budget, substance abuse, family violence and teen behavior. There is a $5 weekly fee for this program. Adult Programs help chemically-dependent adults work toward recovery from addiction through group and individual treatment. This not only means accepting their struggles with substances, but also facing the relationship problems, economic hardships or personal issues that may be contributing to their use of drugs and/or alcohol. Adult services include programming for individuals struggling with mental health and substance use disorders as well as those utilizing medication to support their recovery efforts. If you, a family member or someone close to you is struggling with alcoholism or substance abuse, do not wait to call. We can help. Contact us today at 718.948.3232.

Medicaid and private insurance are accepted. Our program offers a sliding scale fee. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

Y EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Enriched Extended Day

For additional information, or to arrange a tour, call Bonnie Schiuma, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 227-3200 or bschiuma@ymcanyc.org.

This program provides an afternoon of fun for your 4-year old child with movement, stories, values, songs, and more special activities. Weekly swim instruction is available on Friday for children attending at least three days a week. Space is limited and registration is ongoing. 5 Days

In all programs we build self-esteem, assist in achieving personal goals and incorporate the YMCA character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. For more information about Youth Programs, contact Cynthia Bayiokos at cbayiokos@ymcanyc.org. Program fees are non-refundable and class make-ups are only available if the YMCA cancels.
