WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

Improving our community’s health and well-being

In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

Our Y Kid Fit Zone provides a variety of physical activities to youth (ages 6 – 11 years) with a family membership, offering a safe place for kids to work out while their parents do the same. Children may visit the Y Kid Fit Zone for up to two hours per day. The parent or guardian must remain in the facility while the child is in Y Kid Fit Zone. YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org.

Adult Swim Instruction The YMCA helps adults develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, knowing when to ask for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS

Y EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

The YMCA believes that a quality program should provide enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each individual child by working in partnership with families. YMCA Early Childhood Development programs, licensed by the New York City Department of Health, provide a nurturing environment where children’s natural curiosity is a springboard to learning skills that are necessary for success in school. Children learn how to share, take turns and work in groups. They also develop age-appropriate skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics. Imaginative play, art projects and hands-on experience will spark your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong, positive values. For additional information, or to arrange a tour, call Bonnie Schiuma, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 227-3200 or bschiuma@ymcanyc.org.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AQUATICS

PRESCHOOL PROGRESSIVE-LEVEL LEARN-TO-SWIM CLASSES [AGES 3 - 5 YEARS]

YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org.

PARENT & CHILD: WATER ENRICHMENT & AQUATIC READINESS [AGES 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS]

Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. Parents are given guidance on how to develop their children’s abilities and how to protect their children from harm in, on, and around the water; children are given the chance to explore a new environment and to build skills that add to their self-confidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience that lets them learn and have fun together in the water. The skills taught in the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program center around five main components: • Personal safety: Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both the child and the family, including boating safety. • Personal growth: Activities that help the child and the family grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development. • Stroke development: Activities that help develop swimming abilities so participants can move in the water safely. • Water sports and games: Activities that help develop an appreciation of aquatic activities that may last a lifetime, including age-appropriate games and songs. • Rescue: Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies. They learn basic aquatic safety and have a positive experience with their children that can help them grow closer. *Children must wear a swim diaper.

Children start moving more independently through the water under their parents’ guidance. Parents learn more about aquatic and boating safety, and children begin to learn something about these topics as well. At this point the instructor begins to prepare the children to work directly with an instructor on their own. *Children who are not toilet-trained must wear a swim diaper.

At this level, children usually begin attending classes without their parents. However, for those who are not yet ready to do so we offer this adjustment level. Minnow Advanced Beginner, Level II (Ages 6 – 12 years)

YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org.

This is the initial intermediate skill. The children further refine the lead-up strokes they have learned as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming. They learn still more synchronized swimming, wetball, and diving skills. Monday, Wednesday OR Friday 6:00pm – 6:45pm Saturday 11:15am – 12:00pm Sunday 12:35pm – 1:20pm

The YMCA helps youth and teens develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills students build self-esteem. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. REBUILDING LIVES, RESTORING HOPE YMCA COUNSELING SERVICE

Celia Iervasi – Chair, YMCA Counseling Service Committee of Management Jacqueline Filis, LCSW, CASAC – Executive Director, YMCA Counseling Service – jfilis@ymcanyc.org

We can help. Contact us today. PROGRAM OVERVIEW Little Steps is an expressive art and play therapeutic program for children (ages 5-17) whose lives have been affected by their family’s use of drugs or alcohol. The program offers expressive activities through which children learn to identify and change patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior.

Adolescent Programs focus on adolescents and young adults (ages 12-21) who are displaying high-risk behaviors

A p p e n d i x

and attitudes as well as those teens who are struggling with alcohol and/or drug use. Through group and individual treatment, we work to empower young people to achieve a positive, productive and drug-free lifestyle.

Youth/Adolescent Anger Management is open to youth (ages 5 – 11) and adolescents (ages 12 – 17). Anger

Management is a 12-week program that seeks to reduce anger and improve coping skills in our young people. This program is designed to combat unhealthy core beliefs, promote responsible behavior and enhance quality of life. There is a nominal fee for this program.

Parenting Skills is a 12-week program aimed at enhancing knowledge and

understanding of the multi-faceted issues involved in parenting. These classes take an in-depth look at child development, communication, discipline, child/family health, learning/play, stress, nutrition, budget, substance abuse, family violence and teen behavior. There is a nominal fee for this program.

Family Association is open to the community and is a network of parents, spouses, guardians and other family members. This group meets weekly, providing a supportive venue where individuals can learn new skills for dealing with the complex issues associated with living with a family member’s addiction.

Adult Programs help chemically-dependent adults work toward recovery from

addiction through group and individual treatment. Nurturing the potential of every child and teen

We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Improving our community’s health and well-being

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

We’re Here for Good.

ADULT AQUATICS PROGRAMS

ADULT WATER FITNESS

YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org.

ADULT SWIM INSTRUCTION

Are you already fit and want an intense workout, reaching a plateau in your current program, or looking for a great way to get in shape? We offer a variety of options in water fitness so it is easy to find a class that fits your individual needs.

The YMCA helps adults develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AQUATICS

YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org.

PARENT & CHILD: WATER ENRICHMENT & AQUATIC READINESS [AGES 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS]

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS

Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. Parents are given guidance on how to develop their children’s abilities and how to protect their children from harm in, on, and around the water; children are given the chance to explore a new environment and to build skills that add to their self-confidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience that lets them learn and have fun together in the water.

For additional information, or to arrange a tour, contact Allison Sicuranza, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 981-4933 or asicuranza@ymcanyc.org.

Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing selfesteem and creating a positive experience that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists.
