WHY WE’RE HERE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOR HEALTHY LIVING
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
Improving our community’s health and well-being
In neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
The YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most critical social needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

Y KID FIT ZONE We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describes the Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors. We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.
You can’t be the best parent you can be unless you take care of your own health in spirit, mind and body. With your child (ages 6 – 12 years) under the care of our trained staff in Y Kid Fit Zone, we can give you up to two hours of peace of mind to work out, take a class or just relax. Through services like Y Kid Fit Zone, we engage and nurture youth with positive experiences that encourage them to learn, grow and thrive. Parents must remain in the facility while children participate in Y Kid Fit Zone. This is a FREE service with a Family Membership. Monday – Thursday 6:00pm – 9:00pm Times are subject to change. Age range and time limit vary by branch.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
When you volunteer at the Y, you take an active role in bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood. As a program volunteer, board member or Annual Campaign fundraiser, you can make a difference for our Y and the community as a whole. 2 | BROADWAY YMCA FALL 2017

The YMCA helps adults develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Personal Safety: Students learn to be safety conscious in and around water. The information forms the basis of accident prevention. Survival skills, self-rescue and boating safety are taught. • Personal Growth: In learning new skills, students build self-esteem. They also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. • Stroke Development: Students are taught through stroke techniques. Paddling skills, treading, floating, basic rescue skills and safety using lifejackets are among those taught. • Water Games: Games are used to enhance skills learned. Retrieving objects underwater and passing a ball are examples of what is taught. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, knowing when to ask for assistance, reaching and throwing assists. The YMCA believes that a quality program should provide enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive, social, physical and emotional growth. We strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each individual child by working in partnership with families. YMCA Early Childhood Development programs, licensed by the New York City Department of Health, provide a nurturing environment where children’s natural curiosity is a springboard to learning skills that are necessary for success in school. Children learn how to share, take turns and work in groups. They also develop age-appropriate skills that form the foundation for reading, writing and mathematics. Imaginative play, art projects and hands-on experience will spark your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong, positive values. For additional information, or to arrange a tour, contact Allison Sicuranza, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 981-4933 or asicuranza@ymcanyc.org.
In this reading readiness class, children are exposed to sight words, alphabet sounds and sounding out words. These skills are intended to help your child begin to read. Class meets directly after UPK, and the children are brought to class by their teachers. Children from other schools are welcome!

EARLY CHILDHOOD AQUATICS
PRESCHOOL PROGRESSIVE-LEVEL LEARN-TO-SWIM CLASSES [AGES 3-5 YEARS] Swim Testing
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are also about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Romulus Staton at rstaton@ymcanyc.org.
Progressive-level learn-to-swim classes are divided by skill. Please do not register your child for any of the following classes unless he/she has been swim tested or promoted within our program prior to registration. Swim Testing is held Tuesday – Friday at 5:30pm and Saturday at 3:15pm. Please have your child on the pool deck ready to swim within 15 minutes of the beginning of testing. Please contact the Member Service Desk to verify available times each day or e-mail Romulus Staton, Aquatics Director, at rstaton@ymcanyc.org.
PARENT & CHILD: WATER ENRICHMENT & AQUATIC READINESS [AGES 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS]
Pike Beginner, Level I (Ages 3 – 5 years)
Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. Parents are given guidance on how to develop their children’s abilities and how to protect their children from harm in, on, and around the water; children are given the chance to explore a new environment and to build skills that add to their self-confidence. Both benefit from taking part in an experience that lets them learn and have fun together in the water. The skills taught in the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program center around five main components: • Personal safety: Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both the child and the family, including boating safety. • Personal growth: Activities that help the child and the family grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development. • Stroke development: Activities that help develop swimming abilities so participants can move in the water safely. • Water sports and games: Activities that help develop an appreciation of aquatic activities that may last a lifetime, including age-appropriate games and songs. • Rescue: Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies. This group meets weekly, providing a supportive venue where individuals can learn new skills for dealing with the complex issues associated with living with a family member’s addiction.
Your Help Makes All the Difference When you give to the Annual Campaign, you provide a child or a family the chance to move ahead. New York City’s YMCA never turns anyone away.

Your kindness creates a new range of opportunities and promise for the people of New York City.
Adult Programs help chemically-dependent adults work toward recovery from
addiction through group and individual treatment. This not only means accepting their struggles with substances, but also facing the relationship problems, economic hardships or personal issues that may be contributing to their use of drugs and/or alcohol. Adult services include programming for individuals struggling with mental health and substance use disorders as well as those utilizing medication to support their recovery efforts.
If you, a family member or someone close to you is struggling with alcoholism or substance abuse, do not wait to call.
Please — be your best you.

IT’S ABOUT THE WHOLE PERSON HEALTH & WELL-BEING FOR CANCER SURVIVORS The Y and LIVESTRONG joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The researchbased program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Improving our community’s health and well-being
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth today are cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.
We’re Here for Good.

Tuesday (PreK-K)
2X a week Tuesday & Thursday 12:45pm – 2:45pm
For additional information, or to arrange a tour, call Bonnie Schiuma, Early Childhood Director, at (718) 227-3200 or bschiuma@ymcanyc.org.

EARLY CHILDHOOD AQUATICS
Pike with Parent (Ages 3 – 5 years) At this level, children usually begin attending classes without their parents. However, for those who are not yet ready to do so we offer this adjustment level. It is designed to help children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water teaching basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort in holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating positive experiences that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org.

PARENT & CHILD: WATER ENRICHMENT & AQUATIC READINESS [AGES 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS]
PRESCHOOL PROGRESSIVE-LEVEL LEARN-TO-SWIM CLASSES [AGES 3 - 5 YEARS]
Water Adjustment/Water Readiness classes are meant to increase a child’s comfort level in the water and are not intended to teach children how to swim. YOUTH AQUATICS
YMCA Aquatics is about water safety, skill development and fun for everyone. We have an aquatic program for every skill level and interest. Our programs are about more than just the techniques and skills; they are about building friendships, developing self-esteem and creating a positive experience that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Aquatics Director Michael Creegan at mcreegan@ymcanyc.org. The YMCA helps youth and teens develop valuable skills and a lifetime love of the water, while instilling responsibility and safety instruction. • Rescue: Students learn safety techniques – knowing when to yell for help, being able to go to an adult for assistance, reaching and throwing assists.
