Y Afterschool When children enter the Y Afterschool program, a whole other world of imagination and growth opens up to them. In addition to supplementing what they have learned in school, they participate in interactive learning models that engage critical thinking skills, get assistance with their homework from trained YMCA staff, have a chance to socialize with each other, and form long-lasting friendships that enhance their development, growth and selfconfidence. Our curriculum is based on program models that focuses on learning enhancement, health and recreation, and building competence and confidence in children. The program runs every regular school day, directly after dismissal, in a supervised and structured environment, providing a safe after school alternative for children. The staff-to-student ratio is 1:10. Y Afterschool is offered at low or no cost to parents, thanks to generous support from the NYC Department of Education, NYC Department of Youth & Community Development, and federal grants through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, The Afterschool Corporation, leading corporations, foundations, individual donors and our Annual Campaign. Y Afterschool programs are offered at more than 140 sites throughout the city, most of which are New York City public elementary and middle schools, serving more than 15,000 girls and boys each year.

Today’s teens are tomorrow’s leaders. Y teen programs offer New York City young people a forum to be heard. Through civic engagement programs, health and fitness activities and special interest clubs, teens can connect with their peers while giving back to their community. At the Y, we work every day to help teens set and achieve their personal and educational goals. As a result, NYC teens gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions. Through our leadership and academic enrichment programs, the Y makes sure that every teen has an opportunity to envision and pursue a positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening his or her community. Teen Hours are from 3-8pm during the weekdays. Teens may use the facility after 8pm Monday through Friday and on weekends only with parental supervision.

GLOBAL TEENS Global Teens is an international exchange and service learning program which encourages teens to step outside the comfortable surroundings of their home country and embark on a deep, inspirational and impactful journey of personal growth and global exploration for teens ages 13 to 18. Teens are selected through an intensive application and interview process. Each travel group participates in overseas and NYC area service projects focused on a specific social issue, such as food injustice, environmental awareness, human rights, freedom of expression, HIV/ AIDS prevention, diabetes prevention and more. Through a year-long commitment, teens are able to positively and powerfully interact with the global community. SWIM STAGE

DESCRIPTIONS SWIM STARTERS

SWIM BASICS

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

A / WATER DISCOVERY

B / WATER EXPLORATION

Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:

1 / WATER ACCLIMATION

2 / WATER MOVEMENT

3 / WATER STAMINA

Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.

In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION

/ STROKE 5 DEVELOPMENT

6 / STROKE MECHANICS

Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

• S wim, float, swim— sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit • Jump, push, turn, grab

SWIM STROKES

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity.
