your story is our history To celebrate our 160th anniversary, the YMCA of Greater New York embarked on a grand experiment. Member or not, it didn’t matter — we asked everyone to share their memories of the Y.
We gathered those recollections onto our website to show the world what a difference the Y can make in the life of a child, a family or a grandparent.
Whether it involved learning how to swim, becoming a camper or counselor, gaining a new skill or making lifelong friends, we heard from friends near and far who had a story to share.

The response was overwhelming — more than 1,100 people told us their stories.

In this annual report you will sample just a few memories of people touched by the YMCA of Greater New York. We learned from this experiment that the Y builds character and meaningful values that last a lifetime. And we also learned that all of our lives, however diverse, are entwined together.

The impact of the Y crosses generations and borders and centuries. Our impact uplifts individuals, families and communities. Our impact touches people at the deepest level — because people are what the Y is all about.

THOUSANDS OF UNCOMMON STORIES, ONE COMMON HISTORY
The YMCA showed me that people matter and that people care. The humanity in that is something you keep with you forever.
INSPIRING GENERATIONS I grew up at the Y.
I grew up in what was one of many households where the parents worked so much making ends meet that they weren’t home much. With so much time on my hands, my situation could have been a lot worse. Luckily, the Y was there for me. It was the friends and counselors there that kept me going. There were so many things to do and people to meet that I could never get bored — a place that gave me everything. Friends to interact with, grownups to guide and advise you, activities to keep your mind growing, and goals to keep you working hard. I started as a camper and became a volunteer, English as a second language counselor, junior Knickerbocker, Leaders Camp member, Youth and Government participant, Global Teen and even Youth of the Year once. My time at the Y was full of rich experiences.
David Ho 1990s | JAMAICA, QUEENS
I became a part of the International Y in 2010 when I joined Global Teens. With this program, I traveled to Thailand and continued my journey the following year in South Africa. Having these opportunities to travel abroad with some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met has influenced me to continue doing work at the Y. I truly appreciate the Y because it has given me friendships that I will continue to cherish throughout my life. I have realized that others struggle, but continue to be happy, and so I have learned to be grateful for everything and everyone that surrounds me.
KAYLA PEREZ, 2010s In 1996, I was 16 years old and completed a rigorous YMCA Life Guard Training, CPR/First Aid course and advanced swim training in Ocean County, NJ. The experience and the confidence gained led to a position as a Resident Advisor in college, which paved a path to a life and career of teaching young people.
AMY DELAHUNTY, 1990s I used to work at the Chinatown Y. It helped me become a better person by helping me learn about the work place and also about communicating with other people. I learned how to work with different types of people and knew I was working in a non-profit giving back to the community.
JANET LI, 1990s 3
CREATING HEALTHY TRADITIONS During my tour in Iraq I came home on leave and found out about the program the Y had for military families. My son and I played basketball together for the first time at the Y on 15th street in Brooklyn. You hear about the joy of a dad playing sports with his sons, but the stories never really hit home until you get to experience it firsthand. As we played, I felt the shared emotion of generations of fathers and sons sharing a simple joy and creating a lifetime bond.
AMERIGO ROSSI, 2010s Growing up in a military family, things are always changing: your house, your school, your friends. Although each Y building is different, to me, they always have the same feeling, and I like that. The idea that ‘I belong’ has always stayed with me. As an adult, I have continued this family tradition as well. Someday when I have my own children, I hope to share the Y with them too.
LESLEY PENTON, 1990s My mother introduced my sister and me to the YMCA in elementary school. I was an overweight kid and needed movement. I felt safe and a positive vibe there, so I returned to the YMCA with my children. My children’s camp experiences let me know I made the right choice for them. Thank you, YMCA, for being there for me, my family and community.
JENNIFER COX, 1970s 4
I signed up and after my tour and have loved using the facilities and the staff at my North Brooklyn Y. My mother, aunt, uncle and sister signed up as well, and years later they have kept off the weight they have lost.
David Pineda 2010s | NORTH BROOKLYN YMCA
The Y helped show my family how to live a healthier lifestyle — all with the help of the local branch and the many classes and facilities.
I consider the Y a home away from home — a place where I am welcomed and encouraged to grow mentally and physically. Thank you, YMCA.
HEALING SPIRIT, MIND & BODY I was diagnosed with CNS lymphoma (brain cancer) in 2011.
Our son Logan has special needs, including cerebral palsy. Without the Cross Island Y and its swimming and camping program, Logan would not have grown so much socially and physically. We are overjoyed as parents to have partnered with this organization of talented and professional people.
ANNE ARATO, 2000s I have a hearing and a speech issue. When I was a kid the Y put me in swimming and lifting. The Y taught me how to have fun even though I can’t hear or talk well.
ANDREW DALY, 1990s
Twenty years ago, I moved to Staten Island from Brooklyn and had a very bad depression. I quit my job. I enrolled in an aerobics and step class — I was clumsy at the beginning, but it became my routine. With medicine and exercise I was back to myself again. Soon I was able to go back to work. The Y helped me recover from a very serious illness and I became whole again. I am forever thankful for this organization.
This form of cancer has a devastating effect on the central nervous system. I lost control of my left hand, arm, leg, and my vision was double. My doctor said if I worked to retrain my body and mind I could recover much of my strength and function. Fortunately I found out about the Livestrong Program at the YMCA in 2012. I partnered with my trainers at the Chinatown Y to work on strength training, cardio, swimming, aerobics, basketball, and boxing to get myself into shape. Most importantly, the Y built my confidence as I continue to recover today.

CELEBRATING TRANSFORMATIONS The Strong Kids Campaign helped us become a part of the Y family. The YMCA helped me lose 105 pounds over 9 months. I was overweight and on blood pressure medicine and pain pills for herniated discs. An epidural in my lower back was both a painful and indignant experience, and the last straw. I joined the Y to help take back control of my life. Now I do 90 minutes of cardio. Between eating right and the Y, I have been able to change my life.
My mom and I joined the Cross Island YMCA when my mom was going through a lot of financial burdens. I learned how to swim
LISA CARDET, 2010s
at the Cross Island Y when I was 8 months. Now I’m 7 years old
My husband and I started going to the Y because they have a capoeira class. Two years later I got pregnant and kept doing capoeira (with my doctor’s OK) twice a week during my entire pregnancy up to the day my son was born. The teacher modified my exercises and taught me how to listen to my body. Without the Y, this couldn’t have been possible. We feel we have a family here.
and I still enjoy going swimming. I also enjoyed daycare at the Y, starting when I was 2 years old until I graduated. Now, I go to Y After School and during the summer I go to Y Camp. I like making new friends and going on trips! Some years ago my mom went back to work and taught me about giving back.
ARIANYS WILSON, 2010s From the very beginning at the Long Island City Y I was impressed by the friendliness and the supportiveness of every staff member I met. That ethic has continued through the years at every Y I’ve attended. My workouts energize me, and I have become a better worker and a more effective and tolerant leader. The Y has indeed been — and will always continue to be — my fountain of youth.
VICTOR ROSEN, 1990s 8

I feel good inside when I help my mom volunteer and raise money for the Strong Kids Campaign for the Cross Island Y.
2012: MOVING FORWARD, MAKING 2012 was a year in which the YMCA of Greater New York’s Strategic Plan made significant steps moving forward. Building the Foundations of Community, our 2012-14 Strategic Plan, is external — focused on the children and families we intend to serve; urgent —seeking to address some of New York’s most challenging social issues; and measurable — enabling us to define, document and report on the positive impact we generate. Achievements that advance the Strategic Plan are marked with a +. The arrival of Superstorm Sandy gave us the unexpected opportunity to employ all the institutional skills and relationships that are our strengths. We acted forcefully and effectively in support of — and in tandem with — many other forms of disaster recovery in the wake of Sandy.
When Superstorm Sandy descends upon New York City, the Y helps students get their bearings In response to the overwhelming needs left in the wake of the storm, the YMCA of Greater New York identified several schools with young students who suffered great losses — some homeless, feeling overwhelmed and unsafe. 10
Our Y Kids & School Recovery Project provided a sense of normalcy by giving 2,500 displaced students a backpack with warm clothing, school supplies, a book and a teddy bear. We collected $100,000 for the project from 56 individuals and members of the corporate community.
When hundreds of homes are endangered, we open our doors YMCA facilities housed over 700 Sandy evacuees, especially at the Park Slope Armory YMCA which at its peak sheltered 520 disabled adults. The Y worked in close conjunction with the New York City Office of Emergency Management to convert this athletic facility into a disaster recovery shelter site. An additional 168 displaced New Yorkers found shelter at the West Side, Vanderbilt, Harlem, Flushing, Jamaica and Greenpoint Ys.
As kids become more sedentary, the Y propels them into motion + In New York City, almost 40 percent of public school students K-8 are overweight or obese. In 2007, the YMCA
HISTORY
of Greater New York launched the no-cost Strong Kids Card entitling any young person to a minimum of three hours per week of structured activities. To date, 78,000 NYC kids are SKC card holders. As an enhancement and extension of our popular Strong Kids Card, the Y-MVP program is an innovative digital system designed to educate and motivate young people to increase their levels of Moderate to Vigorous Physical activity.
When college seems like a distant dream, the Y brings achievement back to reality + In many low-income households, even the thought of going to college is an unattainable mirage on the horizon. Y Scholars is a year-round college access, readiness and success program that starts kids on the path to college in grade 6. In a few short years, Y Scholars is transforming the lives of hundreds of young New Yorkers: • 93% of Y Scholars high school seniors graduated on time
• 84% of Y Scholars high school seniors entered college in the fall • Participants maintained an average GPA of 86% • 100% of middle school students were promoted on-time
As youth become discouraged and disconnected, the Y provides new options for life and success
+ Almost 250,000 16- to 24-year-olds in New York City are “disconnected” — neither going to school nor working. Many are high school dropouts. In 2012 we began creating new Y Roads Centers in highneed neighborhoods, where we will provide comprehensive services, including job training and other developmental and educational resources. At the first Y Roads Center, the YMCA is also launching a new strategic partnership with Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT) to serve detached youth in and around Jamaica, Queens.
As a diabetes epidemic spreads across the city, the Y expands its effective prevention program
+ This year the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program expanded to two Montefiore Medical Center primary care sites in the Bronx, with plans to extend the program further. This expansion marked the first time the innovative, clinically proven program was made available in clinical environments in New York City. Six classes at the Mount Sinai Hospital were also launched for institution staff members as an employee benefit. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, now in its second year, is growing exponentially while demonstrating more than a 55% success rate in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes.
The Y is in my blood – my parents met at the Y in Colombia. The Y helped shape who I am today, and the Y will help shape my future.
Santiago Ardila LONG ISLAND CITY YMCA
Experiencing the incredible social and physical impact the Y has on our communities, particularly our children and young adults, keeps me energized and motivated to do more.

When you envision the ideal good neighbor, we hope that what you see is the YMCA. We offer helping hands, watchful eyes, and ready resources to help meet unforeseeable challenges in every borough.
2012: THE YEAR OF Y STORYTELLERS Every person who has ever crossed the threshold of a YMCA has a story to tell. How she became a camp counselor. How he learned to swim. How a young parent kept a child engaged during long hours at work. How an injury was overcome. How a teen discovered the path to college. In 2012 we gathered those stories and put them online. More than 1,100 people told us of the deep lifelong memories the Y has made for them. Decades of vivid family adventures and personal tales became an amazing chronicle of personal obstacles vanquished and victories achieved. The central thread that connects all these lives is the Y. Every life is a story, every member is a storyteller, and the sum of all our stories is the YMCA of Greater New York’s common history. In 2012 we added several important chapters to the wonderful story that is New York City’s YMCA. Our new signature program initiatives targeted to closing the academic achievement gap, addressing the epidemic of youth obesity, and reaching out to and reconnecting the city’s most disconnected young people each had very strong starts. Any success we enjoy is due in large measure to the community partnerships we have forged, especially with the City of New York, the Department of Education, and Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow – best in class in the city’s workforce development field.
In 2012 we were just a few enrollments shy of an unprecedented 500,000 New Yorkers served. We added five top civic leaders to our Board of Directors. Our Board Emeritus, chaired by Deloitte’s Barry Salzberg, held its first annual dinner. We generated $10 million in contributions – the true acid test of a charity’s worth. We delivered a strong financial performance and maintained our strong bond rating. Despite damage and delays caused by Sandy, we quickly resumed construction of our new Ys on Coney Island, in the Rockaways, and the Prospect Park Y Aquatics Center, and implemented $8 million in deferred maintenance projects and capital improvements. Most important, our immediate and comprehensive response to the hurricane is a source of pride for all of us and one of many examples of the resilience and optimism of New York City. Everyone has a Sandy story to tell. Finally, thanks to all of you who shared your unforgettable memories of the Y. We are, after all, no more than the sum total of these wonderful periences, and they have susta and life-changing experiences, sustained us for all of our 160 years.

When I was a freshman in college there was a Y right next door. I never really thought about it until I found out that I was at the verge of having diabetes. So me and my best friend had to get my diet and weight under control. So we started to go to the Y. I met a wonderful women named Sandra. She convinced me to take the swimming class that I knew I would hate. But at the end I loved it. Being at the Y, I got to meet tons of people and it made me want to volunteer. Now I’ve been there for 3 yrs and I still love it like when I first went. TANYA JONES, 2000s

When my brother was in 7th grade I used to have to take him to swim lessons at the Y in Flushing, NY. I always remember that trip was a five hour affair start to finish, every Saturday. We started our day on the number 7 train and then walked to the Y. He did learn to swim there, but the highlight of his lessons was when the instructors let him jump off the high-dive. He was so proud our mom had to take the trip in to see it. But the true highlight was afterward, going to their snack bar and getting chocolate milk shakes. That made the whole trip worth it. With a smile, I always remember those Saturday swim lessons. SUSAN DELLAERA, 1970s

The YMCA Staten Island Broadway branch has been an important part of my routine. I was won over right away by how positive and family oriented the Y is. My son has been coming with me since he was 6 months old. Its a great way to start the day, workout, take a class or go for a swim. I remember very vividly as a child of five walking down the stairs to the pool at the Greenpoint Y. Later in life I attended one of my first Board meetings and the opening thought was a poem: “A Hundred Years From Now... it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a CHILD.” That opening thought has stayed with me and guides my life. Thanks, YMCA. PAUL PULLO, 1950s

The Central Queens Y was where I grew up. Every day after school, every Saturday and summer day camps for years. I learned to swim when I was 8, learned to play chess at 9. And I fondly remember Camp Brooklyn where I spent a week at the end of each summer. PATRICK ATWELL, 1950s

I joined the McBurney Y with a friend in 1955 and found it such a fun place to go to. A good work out, a nice swim and meeting many people of diverse backgrounds. I am still a Y member at age 82 and feel my workouts 3 or 4 times a week keep me going and am still making new friends at the Y that I am going to now. JOHN EDWARDS. 1950s

In 1947 my parents enrolled me at the Parsons Blvd “Y” in Jamaica Queens. We swam in the “raw” and I was extremely proud to progress from Minnow to Shark. We all spent countless hours at the “Y” learning to “get along” and socializing and learning from the different groups that made up the borough in which we lived. Lessons I still use today at 72 years of age. FREDRIC SCHROEDER, 1940s

I remember how exciting it was to be representing the YMCA in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in the early 1990s because of our participation in Leaders’ Club. The Y improves lives by giving each child, each young adult, and each person walking through their doors a chance. I am who I am today because of the wonderful people who mentored and believed in me at the Chinatown YMCA and am proud to be part of the Y’s 160 year legacy. CHUN YEE YIP O’NEILL, 1990s
