Child Minding Services

The YMCA is pleased to offer members child minding for children ages 18 months to 12 years old. Enjoy your workout while we take care of your little one(s). Experienced childminding staff will ensure the health and safety of your child(ren) while you enjoy our facilities.

After School Program - (All children and youth ages 5 to 18) Our After School program is a no cost program that offers a safe and welcoming space for children and youth after school hours. Participants will be able to use the Community YMCA facilities and we offer a wide range of activities including, Art, Learn a Sport, E-Sports Tournaments, and our Y-Eats Program.

Child minding available Monday - Thursday from 4:00 pm – 8:00pm. Saturdays 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Maximum drop off services are 90 minutes. Reservations can be made after a childminding punch pass or day pass is purchased. Reservations can be made 48 hours in advance on our MY Y APP or through our welcome desk by calling (902) 423-9622 ext. 0. 24-hour notice for all cancellations must be provided, charges to apply for any cancellation not made prior to the 24 hour time frame.

Youth Programs

Kinder Gym: (0-6 yrs) Kinder Gym is a drop-in program where children learn to run, jump, and play! This program is focused on leading your child through basic movements and modified gymnastics. Through playing to learn, we will do dances, play with sports equipment, and other age-appropriate activities to develop physical literacy. This activity is held in the gymnasium.

Tumblebugs: (3-6 yrs) Tumblebugs is a registered basic movement and modified gymnastics program developed for 3-6 year old children. This program was created by experts in early childhood, physical education and gymnastics right here in Nova Scotia. Tumblebugs teaches the fundamentals of movement and helps to develop physical literacy in young children.

Youth Paint Night: Paint Night will be led through a YouTube guided tutorial, focusing on different art themes each time. This is great opportunity to make new friends and try out new art techniques $8 per session - All supplies included.

Friday Youth Night - (6-12 yrs) Join us for Youth Swim, pizza and a movie! Swim is from 6:00 - 6:45 pm. Pizza and Movie to follow in our Child and Family Development Centre . Registration at Welcome Desk at John W. Lindsay YMCA.

Kinder Krafts: (3-6 yrs) Kinder Krafts is a drop-in program that engages children in creative and interactive art techniques. Each week, we will focus on different activities with themes such as, holidays, season, world events, animals and more! This is a fun time for your child to enhance their fine motor skills by working on specific crafts. All materials provided.

Reading and Lego: (3-6 yrs) Reading and Lego is a drop-in program that focuses on listening skills, audio reception, and gross and fine motor skills. In this program children will make friends and learn teamwork through building structures together. Books will change weekly.

YMCA Youth Exchanges Canada (YEC) - (12-17 yrs) This program is a national exchange program that pairs groups of 10 to 30 participants together from different provinces and territories, staying at least five days in each other’s communities. This program aims to provide youth with the opportunity to develop a broader understanding of Canadian identity, connect with diverse communities, and develop leadership skills.

Child and Youth Panthers Basketball League

(Ages 5 to 16 at the Community YMCA)

Panthers Basketball is an extensive YMCA basketball program for children and youth ages 5 to 16 who are interested in skills development, teamwork, and a recreational or competitive basketball program.

Our highly popular YMCA Panthers Basketball programs ensure all youth have the opportunity to learn, play and develop their basketball skills at a variety of levels, regardless of their social, economic or educational standing. The program focuses on skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a safe environment.

Registration opens every August, and the season runs from October to April.

Tutoring Support: Children and youth are encouraged to bring their homework and will be supported by trained staff with a focus on Math and Science. Other subjects are also offered. (Snacks are provided). In partnership with SHINE.

We Are Culture Leadership Group: (15-18yrs)

A weekly drop-in safe space for young women, transgendered and non-binary participants to meet and discuss relevant societal issues and meaningful topics in today’s world. (Snacks provided) Leadership skills, body positivity, cross-cultural history and self-actualization, confidence skill building, and mental and physical well-being. In partnership with Coverdale.

YMCA

YCAN - Community Leadership Program: (15-30yrs)

The YMCA Community Action Network (YCAN) is one of Canada’s national youth services initiatives, part of the Canada Service Corps. Participants identify the needs in their community and create service projects to address them, gaining employable skills throughout their journey. Registration is ongoing. March Break Camp: Our March Break Day Camp offers an exciting environment for campers to meet new friends and participate in a variety of fun-filled activities. Parents will see their children build confidence and learn skills that will last a lifetime. Camps include daily swimming and field trips within the community. Online registration opens February 7, 2022
