DEAR FRIENDS Each year we take a moment to reflect on our past year’s accomplishments, but more importantly, to look forward for new and innovative ways to strengthen our communities. Looking back over the past year, we are proud to say that our areas of focus in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility continue to grow and thrive. Our neighborhoods are stronger, our child care programs are serving more families and our programs and operations are expanding to address critical needs in the community. In 2018, we received grant funding to enable us to launch new programming including Healthy Weight & Your Child and Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring and begin new exercise programs like Exercising Speech for individuals with special needs. It is programs like these that strengthen the foundation of our community. Since the YMCA’s founding by George Williams in 1844, the Y has addressed critical social issues and delivered lasting personal and social change in communities. This is the Y’s legacy. We promise to build on that legacy by continuing to deliver quality services and programs for children of all ages, adults and seniors. As you read the stories highlighted in our Annual Impact Report, you will see that we are not afraid to continue to seek unique solutions to provide health and wellness initiatives to all, prepare youth for a promising future and help families and seniors stay connected to each other and their communities.
ROSE CUSHING President & CEO
It is only through the generous support of our donors and strong partnerships with other community organizations that we are able to continue serving our members, our communities and those that need us the most. By doing this, we are committed to changing and countering the issues that disrupt cohesion in our communities. Committing to Community Change draws inspiration and direction to guide our future.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING We are committed to creating a healthier community by providing health and wellness programs for all ages.
MEET KENYA I am a 43-year-old single mother of a now 21-year-old son. I was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, but decided to move to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2008. My son and I lived there for 10 years and life was not easy. I was always a plus size woman, but started having health issues that went from good to very bad. One day I was having trouble breathing and my chest hurt very badly, so I went to an urgent care where I was rushed to the hospital with what turned out to be a pulmonary embolism. Within a year, I was also diagnosed with high blood pressure and diabetes. My weight was out of control. I didn’t know how much I weighed because the doctors did not have a scale that could weigh someone over 350 pounds. After two more years of not listening to the warnings to correct my eating habits, my legs began to swell to the point where the skin would tear and I would have open wounds on my legs. One day I was coming down the stairs and my knee gave out, causing me to fall down the stairs. The doctor told me that I had several tears, arthritis and bone-on-bone in both knees. It got to a point where I had to get around on a cane or mobilized scooter. My doctor told me I had lymphedema and also had pre-cancer of the cervix. These two diagnoses scared me enough that I made the decision to move back home to New Jersey and made a promise to myself that I would get control of my health. I had three surgeries including a hysterectomy, weight loss surgery (gastric sleeve), and gall bladder removal. I stopped eating fried foods and fast food and brought my weight down from 419 pounds to 375 pounds. I knew the bypass surgery wasn’t a quick fix and that it’s just a tool and you still have to work hard to lose weight, so I started going to the YMCA on the referral of my physical therapist. I now go to the Y three times a week, and the staff there is excellent. The one year anniversary for my bypass surgery has just passed, and I am happy to say that I have lost 166 pounds, I no longer use my scooter or cane, my blood pressure is back to normal and I am no longer a diabetic. My lymphedema is much better and the precancerous cells are gone. I could not have accomplished this without the Y and am forever grateful that they are and always will be a part of my journey to a life of health and wellness.

MEET ARMANII Armanii was born with Spina Bifida and is paralyzed from the waist down. This has not stopped him from thriving. Armanii is a bright, cheerful, and funny child and attends Ken Shirk Learning Center. He is always trying to help his teachers by cleaning up the classroom, setting up supplies, or offering another child a hand. Armanii does very well academically; he is writing, learning to read and practicing his math skills during his Kindergarten Extended Day program at the YMCA. Armanii loves attending our weekly Yoga and Zumba enrichment as well as playing with his classmates on the outdoor playground. Armanii has stolen the hearts of many teachers, children and families because of his positive attitude and drive to succeed. To continue to allow Armanii to shine, it was necessary for Ken Shirk to make adjustments to accommodate his needs such as providing more open space for his wheelchair, placing toys and activities lower to the ground for when he is crawling around and adding special mulch in the playground so that would not hurt his knees and hands. Armanii also requires catheterization to help drain his bladder, sometimes more than once a day. To ease the staff’s concern about taking on this very sensitive task, a nurse trained the staff on how to safely and appropriately catheterize Armanii. Some have questioned why we have committed ourselves to making so many changes for just one child and our answer is always the same: If not us, then who? If not now, then when? Armanii’s grandparents said that our impact has changed this little boy’s life and that they are so grateful. “Three years ago, when I was looking for a day care, I could not find anyone who would take Armanii, help deal with his disability, and do everything to service his special needs”, said Armanii’s grandfather. “Ken Shirk Learning Center accepted him and continues to include Armanii in all day-to-day activities like swimming, outdoor time and field trips.” Armanii has changed our lives, viewpoints, and values. He has furthered our desire to help others, be inclusive and accepting, and to always find a way to make it work. He has shown us that with a little thought, effort and training, our Center could help advance his success and our own success at the same time. Armanii continues to remind us every day why we are the YMCA, and why the YMCA is inclusive of all.
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Everything we do is in the service of building a better community and the power of what we can achieve by giving back.
MEET PAULA My daughter has attended Camp Munsee at the Metuchen branch for several years, and the first day I dropped her off, I immediately felt at ease and knew that my daughter was in safe hands. However, last summer, my life changed drastically and I knew that I had become part of the Y for a reason. I was faced with a life-changing event where I became guardian to my five nephews as my sister was no longer able to care for them. It was scary because I was already struggling financially and felt my daughter would not be able to attend Camp Munsee, something she looked forward to every summer. I was sad, upset and lost and was afraid to fail as a mother to my daughter and as an aunt to my five nephews and I felt that I had nowhere to turn. One day, I met the Metuchen YMCA Camp Director and I told her of my situation. She made me feel like I would be able to face anything that was thrown my way. She was so compassionate and even gave me a pep talk. I felt like I’d known her for many years because she made me feel so comfortable and she made me feel like everything was going to be okay. She told me that giving up was not an option. I walked away from our conversation feeling that even if I had problems as big as a mountain that I would be okay mentally, emotionally, and physically. She not only gave me hope and encouragement, but was also able to give me the wonderful news that I would be able to get financial assistance to keep my daughter in the program as well as sending my youngest nephew. The story does not end there. On Thanksgiving Day, one of the YMCA staff arranged for her church to help us out with a Thanksgiving basket which was such a blessing and helped us through a rough time in our lives. All of the staff have always treated me with respect and warmth and understanding about my situation. I can never express how much gratitude I have and how grateful I am for the YMCA and their staff. When I think of the YMCA, I picture a tight-knitted family and I see a place that I will always hold dear to my heart. Thank you so much YMCA, for being there for me and my family.
