Our History • Our national movement was founded in 1919 by Queen Maria of Romania who, at the end of the 1st World War, invited the YMCA volunteers and secretaries from USA, whom accompanied the American troop expedition to Europe, for founding a similar organization here in Romania; the headquarter was in Bucharest and as facilities and programs there were sport center, lecture rooms, camp, running social and educational programs. During World War II, YMCA Romania was very active behind the front lines, being involved in the area of culture and social assistance. Along with the communist regime, one part of the YMCA Romania’s life was put to an end. The association was dissolved in 1948, a lot of members being incarcerated. In 1991, YMCA has re-opened for activities dedicated to young people, having branches in some places around Romania. In 2004, following the European trends, YMCA Romania has restructured itself as a Federation with local organizations in Baia Mare, Sacel, Rozavlea, Cavnic, Oradea, Iasi, Timisoara, Bucharest and Constanta.

Vision •

• 2017 was a strategical one for the National movement, the local leaders and young people created the new strategy for YMCA Romania federation setting 3 important pillars: Movement strengthening, Youth empowerment/character development, National youth policy influencer. This strategy for the next 4 years was adopted in our GA held in March 2018. The creation of the strategy was done in a participatory way, and reflects the last years engagement for investing in human resources, in our leaders, for developing transformational programs for our communities, for creating national groups and platform for our local members to connect, share and build together. • Due to our strategic direction regarding developing a national camp program, we organized a national camp for the volunteers and leaders from the local Ys for developing competences for working in camp as manager, program director, counsellors, instructors, support team. In the same time, the local Ys organized their own camp programs during the summer, involving around 100 children and teenagers with ages between 5-14. Dan Carpov, President of YMCA Romania
