WHY WE EXIST 8

Young people are at the centre of everything we do. The YMCA was founded in 1844 in London, to support and help young people, and to this day we carry on this vision. Whether that’s providing youth outreach programs, employment opportunities, or a platform for their voices to be heard, we are an advocate for young people in your local community and across Australia.

It’s important for the YMCA to provide opportunities for health and happiness with those most vulnerable in our communities. — H A N N A H TA D A S S E , C O M M U N I T Y W E L L N E S S L E A D E R

More than a gym As a not-for-profit charity, the YMCA raises funds and provides assistance for people experiencing disadvantage to ensure that they don’t miss out on opportunities to become healthier and happier. Over 70% of the money we raise goes towards supporting young people.

YMCA Open Doors Through our YMCA Open Doors program we offer free or heavily subsidised access to our programs and facilities to people in need. This is made possible by generous donations from members just like you. YMCA raised $1,076,865 through direct fundraising activities in 2016-17.

Morteza’s journey at the Y Growing up in Afghanistan, then 12 year old Morteza Sami had never been in a pool. The first time he did resulted in his brother Latif, a lifeguard at Dandenong Oasis, jumping in after him. “He went straight down,” Latif said. “I jumped in, I had to save him.” Through YMCA Open Doors funding, Morteza started swimming lessons and in 12 months had progressed swiftly through the program. He went from kickboards, to squad, and then making state and national level with the Oasis Otters Swimming Club. “I love everything about Australia; I love school and there is peace, but I love swimming the most.” With migrants and tourists accounting for a third of all drownings in Australia, the YMCA believes that there is a serious need for water education. That’s why through a partnership with Life Saving Victoria (LSV), Dandenong Oasis have established a program to create pathways for young people from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to become competent swimmers and obtain crucial water safety knowledge. We know how important it is for every child to learn to swim and be safer in and around water. — T R U D Y M I C A L L E F, D A N D E N O N G O A S I S CENTRE MANAGER.
