Are you ready for the longest paddling event in the Southern Hemisphere? We are very excited that once again the YMCA and a dedicated team of volunteers, who are the backbone of the YMCA Massive Murray Paddle, are bringing you this iconic event for its 47th consecutive year on the Murray River. In many ways it’s the same iconic event it has been for the past 46 years, but given a new lease on life. It’s great to see so many people who come year after year, and we’re proud to have you back again. Our aim during the event is to help you paddle safely along the 404km of river from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill and to ensure you have everything you need to have a great time along the way. Although a challenging sporting event which encourages community participation and fun, one of the main focuses of the event is to raise funds for the YMCA. This year, funds raised at this event will go towards purchasing a youth bus to help deliver vital youth programs to young people doing it tough. On that note, we would like to say a big thanks to those who fundraised and especially to those in the 404 Club. Almost $400,000 was raised to help people doing it tough. Just remember, that whilst your pain on the river is temporary, your impact in the community changes lives, thank you for your incredible support. Another big thank you to all of our terrific partners including Mirage Sea Kayaks, The Right Merchandise, Tourism Victoria, Moira Shire Council, Berrigan Shire Council, Shire of Campaspe, Gannawarra Shire, Swan Hill City Council, Murray Regional Tourism Board, Mannagum Enterprises, Land Rovers Owners Club of Victoria, St. Johns, and WICEN (Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network) who generously give support through sponsorship, partnerships and during the event. We look forward to meeting you all on the banks of the Murray and sharing the feeling of finishing with you in Swan Hill! Make sure you, and your friends and family at home, stay afloat and connected throughout the event with our daily communications, our social media and web updates. For the last six years, YMCA Victoria has managed this iconic paddling event. From 2016, the YMCA Massive Murray paddle will be jointly managed by Mirage Sea Kayaks and Sydney Harbour Kayaks (SHK). YMCA would like to thank you for your support over the years and may this year be unforgettable! Best wishes,

Peter Dunn Chairman Management Committee & Chief Safety Officer YMCA Massive Murray Paddle

SCRUTINEERING & EVENT CHECK-IN 10

The onus is on you to ensure that you arrive in time for your start with your boat fully prepared appropriate boat number holder with number attached, fixed positive buoyancy, and life jackets on board or worn by juniors. Should you be unable to start at your allocated time due to addressing any of these issues, time penalties will apply. FIVE DAY EVENT Tuesday 24 November (Day 0), Yarrawonga Holiday Park – Yarrawonga (at the Start Line area for Day 1) event check-in and boat scrutineering from 3pm – 5pm and event briefing from 6pm – 7pm. To avoid queues, get there early. At least one person from each team or boat will need to come and collect their race packs, boat number and event briefing information. You will be verbally briefed when you check-in. If you are unsure of the type of vessel you are competing in, or in which category you belong to, a member of Race Group will be available to scrutineer your craft. All boats will be checked to see that they have their boat number attached with an appropriate boat number holder and for positive craft buoyancy. Please Note: After Day 1, you may not be able to change your class – you can however change category if required e.g. from full distance to half distance. SINGLE AND THREE DAY EVENTS For one and three day paddlers, you can have your boat scrutineered at the start line from 6am on the day you begin paddling, or at the finish line of the day prior to you commencing. All boats will need to collect their race packs and boat numbers and be checked for a boat number holder and positive buoyancy prior to entering the water. Refer to the course maps for approximate arrival times at finish lines throughout the event.

OFFICIAL BRIEFING 6pm Tuesday 24 November This is the last opportunity we have to advise you of any changes or variations to prepublished safety and event information that can sometimes occur at the last minute. At least one representative from each team must attend the event briefing.

STAY AFLOAT THIS EVENT

5 DAY #SELFIE COMP Upload a picture of yourself, also known as a selfie, to Facebook or Instagram, to enter a competition for greatness – scratch that, to be the Most Massive Murray Paddler. Massive could be talking about your willpower while doing the event, it could be the training you’ve been doing in the lead up, or it could be the massive Murray itself. We know that the people that do this event are prepared for the big things in life, but we want you to prove it and brag about it to your mates. Show all your friends and family at home how you’re doing something different whilst making a difference. A ‘selfie’ is a photo taken by one’s self, of one’s self. A #MassiveMurraySelfie is a photo taken by a legend, of a legend, with the intent to upload to social media in order to become Most Massive Murray Paddler and to win a $50 package per team boat for the official event photos. The competition will be judged on the final day, with the winner announced at presentations on Sunday November 29. Check out all the pics by searching the #MassiveMurraySelfie on Facebook or Instagram. Note: Once uploaded to one of our social media websites, you agree to give YMCA permission to use said ‘selfie’ for promotional purposes.

404 CLUB The 404 Club isn’t just something that you’re born into, 404 club members are made. Are you strong enough to tough it out on the river AND help someone doing it tough? If you think you have what it takes to tackle the Southern Hemisphere’s longest race - it’s not too late to make a difference off the water too. To join the 404 Club all you need to do is raise $404 on top of your entry. The funds raised go towards YMCA programs to help young people in communities throughout Victoria doing it tough. Want to know the best thing? For every $404 raised to your name is an entry into the draw to win a boat thanks to our sponsors Mirage Sea Kayaks. The deserving winner will be announced on Monday 14 December. You will have until midnight on 13 December to raise your $404 so keep fundraising until then. To set up your own fundraising page, sponsor a paddler, or make a donation, just go to www.massivemurraypaddle.org.au/support to find out how. Since 2009 well over $300k has been raised and put back into local communities. Thanks to last year’s event alone, Cobram Special School got to go on a snow camp and Laundry Mates, a social enterprise Laundromat run by people with disabilities in Echuca, was launched as a result of funds raised. We know that you have what it takes. We know that your strength isn’t all upperbody. We know that when you see someone struggling, you’ll fight. We know that you’ll get out there and raise that $404 and help deserving communities.

PADDLERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The program has indicated a reduction of youth recidivism in those that have participated in the program and our aim is to grow and continue this program so more young people, along with our officers, can be a part of it.

Kieran Walshe

18

Whether you are taking on the challenge solo or as part of a team you can make a difference in the lives of young Australians by fundraising. Money raised goes towards helping young people build bright futures through providing community grants. In 2014, the funds raised for YMCA were given to deserving programs and organisations via our Take the Challenge grants. Find out why some of this year’s paddlers are raising funds for a good cause.

The Blues and Brothers relay team have taken on the iconic YMCA Massive Murray Paddle annually for the past 11 years, with members of Victoria Police and Koori youths paddling together in the 404km, five day event. The aim of the program is to create a positive relationship between the young people and members of the Police Force and attempt to tackle the over representation of Indigenous young people in the criminal justice system. “We have officers here from Melbourne, Ballarat, Horsham and Shepparton and they team up with the young people and paddle down the Murray over five days,” said Kieran Walshe, former Deputy Commissioner of the Victorian Police. “The program has indicated a reduction in youth recidivism in those that have participated in the program and our aim is to grow and continue this program so more young people, along with our officers, can be a part of it”. Up to 56 members annually make up the Blues and Brothers relay team, who paddle and camp for five days along the Murray River at the event. Blues and Brothers were nominated for the Victorian Indigenous Community Justice Awards for their participation in YMCA Massive Murray Paddle.

The [event] is physically tough, but if the kids and police can conquer the river together, maybe we can conquer the issues on the streets too.

Tony Lovett

They won the Leadership Innovation Award at the Indigenous Community Awards in 2010 at Federation Square. Tony Lovett, a community volunteer at Grampians Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee and organiser of the Blues and Brothers team said that the program provides positive steps in building a relationship between police and Koori youths. “The [event] is physically tough, but if the kids and police can conquer the river together, maybe we can conquer the issues on the streets too,” he said. The Blues and Brothers team are just one example of the positive impact the event has on the community through participation. The team’s model can be applied to other groups in the community looking for opportunities to work on physical and life skills. Participating as a team in the event helps foster focus, goal setting skills and responsibility in a different environment that can then be transferred back to everyday life. Other expected outcomes include: • A sense of achievement after paddling the longest event in the Southern Hemisphere in a relay team, leading to improved self-esteem. • Improved teamwork and leadership skills through preparation, racing and camping together. • Improved social skills from close knit living within a diverse community – the event becomes its own community as it travels along the river. • The ability to learn, achieve, connect with and support each other in an environment that may be outside of participants normal comfort zones. • Learning that physical activities can be fun and social, especially for participants who may be uncomfortable with competitive sport or not used to the great outdoors. • Awareness that physical activity can improve mental health and wellbeing. • Increased knowledge of the effects of diet and activity on health. • Learn paddling skills and then develop them in what can be challenging race and river conditions. • Achievement of a personal fitness goal. • Increased stamina and fitness. The YMCA Massive Murray Paddle is a community event that welcomes newcomers. Whether you are in it for the competition or just up for the challenge, there are multiple entry options to suit different paddling abilities; all participants share the challenge, unique experience and camaraderie of paddling down the Murray River together.

19

RED DAY Held on Saturday 28 November, the fourth day of the event, paddlers dress up and decorate their boats in red to celebrate the benevolent work of YMCA Victoria. All paddlers get in the spirit of the day, preparing costumes and performing songs or chants. The start line is always a sight to behold. Go all out – coordinate as a team, stand out as an individual and go in the draw for the coveted title of Winner of the Red Day competition.

20

TROPHIES, AWARDS & RESULTS We want to recognise how challenging this amazing event is. In our eyes – you are all winners!

RESULTS Results will be posted daily onto the ‘our race results’ website. Links will be provided on the homepage of our website and on social media. Overall class winners, trophy and award recipients will be announced at the presentations event in Swan Hill on Sunday 29 November, after the final day of paddling.

DAY 2 - 26 NOV WHAT’S ON: Start: Tocumwal Boat Ramp. Finish: Picnic Point Boat Ramp. Check-in/Scutineering on the day: 6am at Start line at the information tent. Merchandise: Finish line. One in three women will experience some type of violence from a male during their life. When we promote equality and respect we can prevent the violence before it occurs by changing the attitudes and behaviours behind it. YMCA Victoria has been building our commitment to gender equality through our Y Respect Gender Project. This project has worked to build awareness of these issues, promote an equitable and respectful culture, and embed gender equality principles in all our actions and policies. So as you paddle today take a moment to remember White Ribbon Day is about more than saying NO to violence – it’s also about saying YES to gender equality and respectful relationships
