Visit Shirakawa-go and explore a UNESCO World Heritage site. The traditional style farmhouses are more then 250 years old. “Gassho-zukuri”, meaning “constructed like hands in prayer” are built with thatched roofs that resemble Buddhist monk hands pressed together in prayer. These structural houses evolved to adapt to the environment over generations and are specific to the social and economic structures of the area. Next, the city of Takayama in the Gifu prefecture has preserved a touch of old Japan. Experience the ambience of the Edo period and be transported back to when it thrived. Visit shops, restaurants and breweries that have been in business for centuries. Lastly, Kanazawa the capital of the Ishikawa Prefecture that once rivaled Kyoto during the Edo period. Now a renowned city that houses many historical attractions like the Kanazawa castle, that’s home to one of the top landscape gardens. See another famous attraction, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.
