LAURA LINDBERG’S JOB IS FAR FROM CONVENTIONAL. WHILE MOST OF US SPEND OUR WORK HOURS SITTING BEHIND A DESK, LAURA SPENDS HERS SITTING ON TOP OF HORSES AT TAMA STABLES.
It took years for Laura to turn her favorite pastime into a career. Her horseback riding journey began at the young age of 3 when she rode her neighbor’s horse for the first time. Laura’s mom took notice of her daughter’s fascination with the gentle giants and signed her up for lessons at a nearby stable. Laura rode on and off throughout her childhood and competed in dressage shows and some lowerlevel jumping competitions during her teenage years. After high school, when it came time to decide between a regular career versus a career with horses, Laura chose to take the “normal” career path and attend college. During her last year of school, she completed an internship in Japan and, upon landing a job, decided to stay. After working a typical 9-to-5 information technology (IT) job in Japan for a couple of years, she eventually realized working with horses was where she belonged. It took a lot of work for Laura to become a horseback riding instructor, as the testing to obtain an equine instructor certification in Japan is rigorous. Laura had to complete a practical riding test, interview and written exam all in Japanese — her second language. After much preparation, Laura passed the test and, to this day, still considers it to be her biggest achievement in horse riding. She’s been teaching at Tama for two years now and loves witnessing her students’ improvement and seeing riders enjoy the sport. For Laura, a typical day at the stables starts at 8 a.m. with feeding the horses, changing out their water buckets and mucking out the stalls. The rest of her day is spent teaching lessons or leading trail and pony rides with barn chores sprinkled in between. It’s often busy at the stables, but when she finds the time, she’s quick to jump on a horse and take part in her favorite sport. But you don’t have to be an expert rider to jump in the saddle at Tama. Even those who have never been near a horse are welcome to hop on and enjoy a trail or pony ride or even take lessons. Laura has found that many beginners’ hesitancy stems from fear, but she encourages them to push past their fears and just “have fun, see how it is and see how you like it.” Rest assured you are in good hands with well trained horses and experienced riders like Laura.
◀ WHAT IS DRESSAGE? Laura describes dressage as a synchronized dance — an intricate performance that takes years to master. It’s a team sport that requires mutual respect from both rider and horse. Laura explains that during the best moments in dressage, “The horse is really feeling you, listening to your smallest aids.” It’s an elaborate show that Laura seems to perform effortlessly as she glides across the arena performing advanced dressage movements that require precision and experience on the rider’s part and athleticism from the horse.
TAMA’S HORSES HAVE THEIR OWN UNIQUE PERSONALITIES AND SKILL-SETS. ONE THING THEY ALL SHARE IN COMMON: THEIR EXPERIENCE AND THOROUGH TRAINING MAKE THEM IDEAL FOR ALL TYPES OF STUDENTS FROM BEGINNER TO EXPERIENCED RIDERS.
JERO AGE: 19 Jero is a thoroughbred gelding who, in spite of his stubborn demeanor, is a wonderful lesson horse for all levels. Jero loves to eat and can sometimes get grumpy when disturbed. A slow starter but a wonderful ride once he’s warmed up and ready to go.
MY TIBER AGE: 16 My Tiber is a thoroughbred gelding ideal for beginner riders. Tiber also excels in dressage and is a calm, smooth ride for first-time trail riders. My Tiber holds a special place in Laura’s heart as she completed the intensive equine instructor certification’s practical riding test on him. MAKANI AGE: 7 Don’t let this thoroughbred’s young age fool you — Makani is a sweetheart and favorite among the stable’s more advanced riders because of his youthful energy. Makani was once a racehorse, but his true passion is jumping.
BITS & PIECES AGE: 20 Bits offers the whole package as he is used in multiple disciplines including dressage, jumping and trail riding. Bits is cute with a bit of attitude and sometimes likes to test the student riders during lessons. His impeccable barn manners and calm demeanor make him a barn favorite among students and beginners. Bits is Laura’s go-to horse for riding competitions.
USHIWAKAMARU AGE: 12 Meet everyone’s favorite little guy at Tama Stables! Ushi is very calm and tolerant making him ideal for pony rides. He is named after a legendary samurai warrior and his name loosely translates to “little but brave.” This adorable pony will surely steal your heart.
