SMART IDEAS LOTTA DE VISSCHER IS THE ENTERPRISING AND ENERGETIC MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MAZE. HERE SHE TALKS ABOUT THE FUTURE AND WHAT SEPARATES MAZE FROM OTHER COMPANIES. What pleases you the most about 2012? – That we increased sales by over 30% while we made major structural changes within the company. But also that our customers see and appreciate what we do, and appreciate what we do, and that the press has been positive and has covered our products. What are the goals for 2013? – To keep on designing good products and maintain our high level of customer satisfaction. Maze seems to be moving towards a cleaner style and a more grown-up range. – I wouldn’t say “cleaner” style but certainly more mature. I think our catalogue holds together better now and we have ventured to use our collective expertise in a better way. We’re also introducing more advanced products – for example, a superfine stool and a new bedside table – and we’re adding new materials such as leather and wood. What makes Maze stand out from rival companies? – We are extremely flexible and responsive to our customers. We also manufacture 90% of our products in Sweden, and we work closely with our suppliers, so we can quickly adjust in a way that I don’t think many other companies can. We also have smart ideas and clean designs. No unnecessary frills – we’d rather remove than add!

PEACE

[ Peace. Enough said. ]

Advanced solutions LOUISE HEDERSTRÖM IS ONE OF MAZE’S MOST ICONIC DESIGNERS, AND IS THE ONE BEHIND POPULAR PRODUCTS SUCH AS THE COAT HANGER BILL AND THE SMART LITTLE TABLE MINNIE MAE PAPER. You’ve been designing products since the late 90’s – how has your style changed since then? – I have started to get more inspiration from my roots, but I also mix it with how I see the world. Nowadays, when the opportunity arises, I also tend to make more advanced solutions. When you buy things for yourself, how picky are you about the design? – When I was a student I often bought things mainly to quickly solve a problem, and didn’t wait until I found something I really wanted. Some things take an extremely long time for me to find and buy. A kettle, for example, will take about a hundred years, so I’m a bit damaged that way.

Photo Petra Bindel.

You like Elvis – what do you think he would have thought of your design? – Music in general is very important for my creativity; it moves and stimulates me. There’s also a great deal of stories about Elvis that are both bizarre and fun and that I can draw inspiration from. He would probably have thought my stuff was OK, but that they needed more glitter.

A BLIND EYE “Working with wire is like stepand Riga and been a lecturer in ping into a new universe. It’s a Lund. But one thing Olof Kolte relatively simple processing and never left behind is his commitprinciple to shape and join the ment to complex issues such as thread, yet it’s a great challenge environmental awareness and Hat Rack. Photo Kent Johansson. to sculpt a product into being consumption: “We live in a strucwhat you want. The wires must be turally non-sustainable society and it’s met in space exactly to the millimeter.” hard to do something that’s sustainable. So says Olof Kolte, and thereby instantly gives Are we as designers to turn a blind eye and the products Hat Rack and Shoe Rack he’s made contribute to this development, or to question for Maze yet another dimension. Few designers it and create new standards for how we organize are as geographically unbound – he’s studied in society?”. Here at Maze the answer is obvious. Paris, Copenhagen and London, worked in Mexico Olof Kolte for President! 2

“Our motto is to free surfaces” “It should be playful, preferably wall mounted and with a multifunctional form”, says Maze-founder Kent Johansson about his approach to design. It was based on those thoughts that he, after a fruitless search for the perfect wall shelf, took matters into his own hands in 2001. His F-shelf quickly became popular, and shortly thereafter Maze was created.

Whew! Copperfield Mirror. Photo Kent Johansson.

It’s hard not to be equally impressed and envious when looking at Henrik Kjellberg and Jon Lindström’s accomplishments. Based on a curiosity for new materials and processes, together they have made exciting design ever since they became friends at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm back in 1996. Today they run the multiaward winning design studio o4i. In addition to making products for Maze, they have done work for Fritz Hansen, Canadian EQ3, Finnish Martela and that furniture company created by Ingvar Kamprad, and have worked with furniture design, industrial design and architecture in Stockholm, Oslo and New York.

SOME THING POET IC AND SURREAL “As designers, we would like to bring something poetic and surreal to the nature of the product.” The words belong to Johanna Asshoff and Hanna Brogård, who in addition to working and raising their children also enjoy being challenged by projects that will take them on adventures together. Together you run Asshoff & Brogård Design Studio. What’s it like designing as a team? – We’ve done it since 2006 and we are incredibly close. On the whole, we agree, but the basis of our collaboration is to not always agree, but rather to question. Today, we think more alike. But at the same time we’re less afraid of conflict and more confident about saying exactly what’s on our minds. Kite. Photo Kent Johansson.

What is good design? – It’s hard to say. When it comes to aesthetics, it is very individual. But we think that good design is a product that is well thought out, where function and appearance go hand in hand. 3

CROCHETED METAL ELIN RIISMARK HAS DESIGNED THE LOVELY CANDLESTICK GRANDMA FOR MAZE. HERE SHE TALKS ABOUT CROCHET METAL, LAMPS MADE FROM TREE BRANCHES AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DESIGNER. You have two children. Did the way you saw design change in any way when you became a mother? – No, not really. But something that’s actually new since I had children is that I now always have two reviewers who are unusually honest with me in their criticism. Your candlestick Grandma for Maze – where did you get the idea for that? – I am inspired by everyday life with my family, and my products always reflect a small part of myself. My grandmother crocheted everything you can

imagine; potholders, tablecloths, and even large quilts. Unfortunately I can’t do that, but now I’ve crocheted something in my own personal way. The “Tree Branch Lamp” that you designed is made from actual tree branches. Is there any limit to what you can make furniture from? – If a product is to be produced on a large scale, it must fulfil certain special requirements. The Tree Branch Lamp is produced on a small scale and is both lighting and art in one, and in the arts it’s really just your imagination that limits what’s possible. What does it mean to be a designer? – I don’t think the term means the same to everyone. For me, who is perhaps a little more artistically oriented, it means to test the limits, find new ways of looking at things and inspire other people. Grandma S. Photo Stefan Ek.

Hang Pockets. Photo Stefan Ek.

4

One of the Maze family’s newest additions is Mia Cullin, and we’re proud to present her neat storage product, Hang Pockets, made from felt. You have worked with felt in previous products too – why that particular material? – I really like the non-woven materials, everything from plastic, rubber and Tyvek to natural materials such as leather and felt. It’s incredibly rewarding to work with, requires no edging and is compliant but also consistent. I think felt is a fantastic and beautiful material. It has its own value, kind of carries itself. How would you describe your design style and how has it arisen? – My style is simple and functional. In contrast, I like to raise the craftsmanship and joints in the product and turn them into important details. Something that has shaped me a lot are my childhood summers in the southern part of Sweden. At the same time, I had an early interest in patterns and how they are structured. For example, I remember how fascinated I was when I discovered how a Gunnebo fence was constructed; my mom practically had to drag me away!

The talented cockerel

The youngest addition to Maze is called Jaan Selg and is only 26 years old – in fact, he’s still in school! Here the talented cockerel talks about the future, his dream partner and the importance of being critical. What’s it like still being in school and to already have a finished product in the stores? – Of course it’s incredibly fun! The process of producing a finished product is also very instructive. It will definitely be useful for me in my profession in the future, after I have finished my thesis for Electrolux. Who would you most of all like to team up with and why? – Some day I would want to draw a house with an architect. With my approach as an industrial designer, it would be interesting to try to work in that area. Architecture is exciting because it’s on such a large scale, while I am used to working on a smaller scale. I believe in cooperation and the creative breadth it brings. What are your guiding principles as a designer? – Simplifying, experimenting and being critical.

Jaan Selg. Photo Nielsen Omvik.

How do you see the future? – I hope I can continue to blend product and furniture design, which are my major interests. I like these areas because they are dynamic and it creates a challenge that allows me to develop further.

A house by the sea Lotta De Visscher’s days must contain more than 24 hours. It’s incredible how she can have time to be both Maze’s managing director and one of its designers. This is how she describes her work: “I’m primarily manager and I design only when I see something that’s missing and in materials that fit my experience – super simple design where the material is most important.” With her experience designing uniforms for Fritidsresor and a bag collection for Scandinavian Airlines, it isn’t surprising that she had come up with products such as Leatherbag, or that it has become a hit. Ever since childhood, Lotta has had a passion for doing creative stuff and has worked within design largely herwhole life. Her big dream is one day to design a house by the sea: “If I can find an architect who puts up with me.” Well, until that day Maze will put up with you for sure!

VIVA BRAZIL! BRAZILIAN DESIGNER BERNARDO SENNA TALKS ABOUT POORLY MADE BOOKSHELVES, BRAZILIAN TRENDS AND THE CONNECTION TO SCANDINAVIA. How did you first get into the design business? – I noticed the difficulties my aunt had picking up heavy water buckets (this actually became a project years later in design school). My first projects were new designs inspired by bookshelves and magazine holders I saw in the market which didn’t work properly, or by finding cheap objects, like plastic bows or electric fixtures, and reinventing them. I wanted to build better things. What’s it like being from Brazil and working with a Scandinavian company? – There’s a hidden connection between the two. Sixten Sason, Panton and Saarinen are echoed in Niemeyer, Sergio Rodrigues and Zanine Caldas. There’s something between the quest for a better, improved life and the simple pleasure of the form. And of course there’s a feeling that if you can design for a Scandinavian brand you can meet a higher design standard that gives you confidence to create more audaciously.

“All design is a form of architecture.”

THE STATEMENT COMES FROM MATTIAS STENBERG, THE 38-YEAR-OLD STOCKHOLM RESIDENT WHO NOW MAKES HIS DEBUT FOR MAZE WITH HIS HANDY SIDE TABLE BESIDE.

Nite. Photo Kent Johansson.

How is the design climate in your country? – Since most Brazilians have become consumers in recent years, competition is becoming serious and several traditional companies now see design as something important to them. More consumption is leading to environmental concerns, and lots of experiments with wannabe sustainable materials and technologies are taking place. New businesses started from scratch by designers are increasingly successful too! 6

With a background as a trained civil engineer, licensed in biomechanics and with a previous employment at a managementconsulting firm, he stands out as a designer. Since 2010 he runs Mattias Studio Vision Architecture & Design, where he works simultaneously on architecture, furniture, and lighting projects. The foundation for everything, he says, is that he comes from a crafty and creative family: “My grandfather built wooden boats outside of Umea and it’s clear that it has affected me greatly as a craftsman.” We are grateful to grandpa and welcome Mattias with open arms to the Maze family!

h FORM AND FUNCTION h Highly experienced but new to Maze, Gunilla Hedlund is a Swede who loves parks and Japanese architecture, but above all, products for the public space. We are very excited to present her Square Hook. What is your biggest success so far? – The bench Wave, produced by Nola. It received the award Excellent Swedish Design in 1992 and was a contender at the time! What is most important: form or function? – The form should enhance the function – only then can the form have a function. Sometimes we can look back on ideas we’ve had and realize that they weren’t that great. What’s the weirdest design idea you’ve had? – I tried to combine a spoon and a fork into one cutlery. It’s really impractical, and for what?

Nuts, bolts & fittings As a child, with her father being a plater, Malin Lundmark had her doll trolley filled with nuts, bolts and fittings instead of dolls. As she grew older, she wanted to be an engineer, but before that she felt the urge to explore her artistic side for a year. What at first was supposed to be a

temporary break resulted in several long courses and a successful career in art and design – something we at Maze of course are thankful for. Check out her playful hooks, elegant newspaper rack, Magbag the Original, and her smashing new shelf, Edgy.

THE FAMILY BUSINESS BACKSTIGS HAS MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS IN STEEL AND WIRE FOR ALMOST 80 YEARS AND IS A STEADY PARTNER TO MAZE. FOR THREE GENERATIONS THE FACTORY HAS BEEN OPERATED BY FATHER, SON AND GRANDSON. THE GRANDSON PETER BACKSTIG TELLS THE STORY OF THIS SMALL COMPANY, WHICH IS SITUATED AMONGST TREES IN AN UNFLATTERING 2000 -SQUARE-METER RED-BRICK FACTORY BUILDING. Photo Lotta De Visscher.

8

A will of steel The company is in the village of Tyngel, which is located on a highway in the south of Sweden. Peter Backstig has worked here since 1998 together with his father Ingvar, who has been with the factory since 1964. The Backstigs story started in a shed way back in 1935 with Ingvar’s father, Gösta. On his childhood farm, Gösta was the second son. When it was decided that his older brother would take over the farm, Gösta started looking for something else to do. Eventually he got a small piece of land, borrowed some money from the local farmers and built something of his own. After just four years, his business had turned into a small flourishing factory built in a small shed. Dish racks and cutlery baskets were his first products, all manufactured in wood. In 1945, after the war, wood was not as popular, which forced him to move towards steel production. He started making simple shelves and household items. Today Gosta is 97 years old and retired from his work in the family business. Nevertheless, his attachment to Backstigs, cannot be denied. Just a few years back he used to come in and help out a little; he would mount plastic knobs onto the dish racks, but after becoming blind it became more difficult to do this, says Peter. The Gnosjö spirit Backstigs’ production methods and products continue to change and develop. Peter has an explanation for this: – Being a smaller company, you have the advantage to be able to adjust and be more flexible; larger companies don’t quite have the same possibility. For example, just ten years back we made dish racks, today we are more involved in the production of shop fixtures and interiors as well as producing design hooks. We constantly get requests from new markets, so we try to have as

broad a portfolio as possible. Diversifying might be the answer. Peter paints a picture of a society where it at times has been tough, but where the famous Gnosjö spirit has come to play a significant role. – A few years back we received a very large order to manufacture a shop interior. Another major company in the area had originally received the order but could not handle it alone, so they placed an additional order with Backstigs. It turned out that we could not manage our delivery alone either, so we also had to put out an additional partial order to another manufacturer nearby. This way, we all took a part of this large order. That is what the Gnosjö spirit is all about – trying to help each other out. Peter continues: – There is also a degree of stubbornness here – others succeed, so why shouldn’t I? Competition is good; it spurs one to always want to be better. Locally grown The Backstigs live very close to each other. Standing outside the factory building you can see all three houses owned by Peter, Ingvar and Gosta. They don’t only have their homes, but they also share a belief in the locally grown; this can be seen in their use of transport and materials: – We don’t use any chemicals and basically every thing we need is in house. I guess when we drive the four miles to Hillestorp for treatment there is a bit of exhaust emission, says Peter. What the future holds for Backstigs, he doesn’t dare to predict, but he is hopeful. When the question of whether a fourth generation Backstig one day will take over the factory, Peter says: – Well...if I get kids I guess it will be up to them if they would want to run the factory or not, he says, laughing.
