NEW DEVELOPMENT ON THE ISLAND CURRENTLY ACCOMMODATING FACTORY WAREHOUSES AND REDUNDANT FACTORIES, AIMS TO CREATE A MIXED USE COMPLEX. THE NEW DESIGN AIMS TO TURN THIS ISLAND INTO A PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY AREA, A MAIN VERTICAL AXE DIVIDES THE ISLAND INTO TWO PARTS, CUTTING THROUGH THE BUILDINGS FRAMING AN IMAGE OF THE RIVER AND THE BUILDINGS ACROSS THE ISLAND. THIS MAIN PROMENADE TAKES THE PEOPLE FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE DECK AT THE END OF THE ISLAND. SECONDARY PATHWAYS BRANCH FROM THIS MAIN AXE LEADING PEOPLE TO THE GREEN PUBLIC SPACES AND THEIR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS. THE FIRST BUILDING ADJACENT

TO THE STREET IS THE PARKING BUILDING. THE REST OF THE BUILDINGS ARE OF A MIXED USE TYPOLOGIES ACCOMMODATING COMMERCIAL-BUSINESS AND RESIDENTIAL FUNCTIONS. ACCORDING TO THE SUN ORIENTATION; RESIDENTIAL UNITS WERE LOCATED ON THE WEST SIDE, FACING THE SOUTH TO ENSURE MAXIMUM SUN EXPOSURE, CONTRARY TO THE WEST WHERE OFFICES AND COMMERCIAL FACULTIES LOCATED. THE DESIGN ENDS BY THE LANDMARK BUILDING WHICH CONTAINS RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL AND OFFICES .IT IS THE FOCUSED BUILDING WHERE DETAILED PLANS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED.

02NEW GERMAN EMBASSY IN CAIRO PROJECT GRADUATION YEAR BRIEF

2014 THE DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTATION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY IN CAIRO IS CURRENTLY USING A BUILDING BELONGING TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, WHICH WAS DESIGNED IN THE MID- 1970S AND WAS FINISHED IN 1982. THE BUILDING ENSEMBLE INCLUDES BOTH THE CHANCELLERY BUILDING AND THE AMBASSADOR’S RESIDENCE. THIS BACHELOR PROJECT BUILDS UPON THE INTERNATIONAL OPEN PLANNING & DESIGN COMPETITION FOR DESIGNING AND BUILDING A NEW GERMAN EMBASSY IN CAIRO WHICH IS INTENDED TO SUBSTITUTE THE OLD BUILDING ON THE SAME SITE (AROUND 6.000 M2) IN THE DISTRICT ZAMALEK AS A SUSTAINABLE AND ECONOMIC SOLUTION. NEVERTHELESS, THE REQUIRED USABLE AND RESIDENTIAL SPACE FOR THE NEW BUILD COVERS AROUND 3.500 M2. FOR SECURITY REASONS THE DEVELOPABLE AREA IS AROUND 1.550 M2. GERMAN EMBASSIES SHOULD ALWAYS SHOWCASE THE GERMAN BUILDING CULTURE AS WELL AS CONVEYING THE CURRENT STANDARDS OF SUSTAINABLE BUILDING. THE CHALLENGE LIES, IN ONE HAND ON FULFILLING THE SECURITY REQUIREMENTS, AND CONVEYING A HOSPITABLE AND OPENNESS. THE IDEA OF THE NEW DESIGN IS TO HAVE TWO PARALLEL BUILDINGS CONTAINING THE FUNCTIONS ONLY AND HAVING THE VOID BETWEEN THEM ACT A SERVICE ZONE LIMITED

WASTING TOO MUCH SPACE ON CIRCULATION AND SERVICES. SECOND, THE IDEA OF AN OFFICE-BUILDING PLAN WAS BEST EXPRESSED, AS IT WAS CLEAR THAT OFFICES WILL BE ARRANGED ALONG THE SIDES OF THE BUILDING. AND THIRD SECURITY WISE, IT WAS THE BEST, AS IT HAD THE MAXIMUM OPEN SPACE BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS YET STILL PROTECTED BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS. THE BUILDING WAS DIVIDED INTO THREE ZONES, CHANCELLERY, VISA AND RESIDENCE. CHANCELLERY AND VISA WERE LOCATED IN THE TWO PARALLEL MASSES, WHILE THE RESIDENCE WAS LOCATED BEHIND THEM IN THE SMALL BUILDING, BEING HIDDEN AND PROTECTED BY THEM AS IT HAS A PRIVATE FUNCTION.

THIS PROJECT AIMS THE REVITALIZATION OF THE INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN EAST CAIRO. THE NEW DESIGN LIES BETWEEN THE DISTRICTS OF SAKR KORAYSH AND TORAB EL YAHOOD UNDERNEATH THE RING ROAD ACTS WHICH AS A BUFFER ZONE BETWEEN THE TWO AREAS. IT IS AN UNUSED WASTE SPACE USED AS A TRASH DUMP, BY IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE THERE AND PROVIDING THEM WITH BETTER SERVICES. A YOUTH CLUB - SPORTS FACILITIES, SHOPS AND CAFE IS PROPOSED FOR THE NEW DEVELOPMENT AFTER ANALYZING THE LACK OF SERVICES

AND FACILITIES THERE. THE GROUND FLOOR WILL BE RESERVED ENTIRELY FOR THE SPORTS FIELDS, GYM AND CHILDREN’S AREA CONNECTED TO THE PLATFORMS OF THE FIRST FLOOR WHICH WILL BE SHOPS AND CAFES THROUGH THE BOXING ARENA. THE YOUTH CLUB IS REACHED BY A BRIDGE THAT CONNECTS BOTH DISTRICTS, THE BRIDGE ACCOMMODATES SHOPS AND SEATING AREAS AND PROVIDES SAFE WAY FOR CHILDREN TO REACH THE YOUTH CLUB.

THE REDEVELOPMENT OF MANIAL WATERFRONT IS DIVIDED INTO THREE ZONES, EACH ZONE HAS A CERTAIN THEME WITH MIXTURE OF USES. ZONE ONE WHERE THE PLOT IS SITED ACTS AS THE BUSINESS DISTRICT IN A SIGNIFICANT LOCATION TO REFLECT THE IDENTITY OF A NEW DOWNTOWN. THE ZONE IS DIVIDED INTO 6 PLOTS, INCLUDING SEVERAL NODES AND LANDMARKS FORM AN AQUARIUM, A CONFERENCE CENTER TO A HIGH-RISE BUILDING NOTICEABLE ANYWHERE

FROM CENTRAL CAIRO. PLOT 3 IS ONE OF 2 MAIN BUSINESS QUARTERS IN THE PROJECT. DIVIDED INTO AN ELEVATED BUILDING AND TWO OFFICE BUILDINGS, CONNECTED TOGETHER BY BUSINESS PROMENADE. THE ELEVATED BUILDING IS A SHOPPING MALL SURROUNDED BY THE GREEN PROMENADE AND THE MAIN PEDESTRIAN PROMENADE ,ABOVE IT THE TWO OFFICE BUILDINGS ARE LOCATED , DIRECTLY ON THE BUSINESS PROMENADE.

05GUC BERLIN CAMPUS REDESIGN - BERLIN - GERMANY PROJECT COMPETITION - 2ND PLACE AWARD YEAR 2017 BRIEF

THE AIM IS TO CREATE A STRUCTURALLY COHERENT UNIVERSITY COMPLEX WITH HIGH INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR QUALITIES IN THE FORMER BORSIG AREA AND TO GIVE THE EXISTING, HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS A NEW ARCHITECTURAL FRAMEWORK. THE OLD SIEMENS HALL IS BORDERED ON THE WEST SIDE BY THE NEW BOARDING HOUSE, WITH ITS EXTENSION BEING INTEGRATED INTO THE NEW APARTMENT BUILDING, AND THE OLD BRICK FACADE BECOMING A DECISIVE PART OF THE ENTRANCE HALL. THE PERCEPTION OF THE GUC IN THE CITY.

THE NARROW, L-SHAPED BUILDING OF THE STUDENT HOUSING BLOCK DEFINES A COURTYARD ON THE BACK OF THE SIEMENSHALLE, WHICH FUNCTIONS AS THE NEW CAMPUS CENTER. THE NEW SKYLINE OF THE GUC CAMPUS ENRICHES WITH STRIKING HIGH POINTS AND ELEGANT HORIZONTAL LINES. THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING WITH ITS PROJECTING VOLUMES NOT ONLY CREATES EXCITING PERSPECTIVES BUT ALSO DEFINES THE ENTRANCE TO THE CAMPUS AND THE FORECOURT AND SUPPORTS

PROJECT MASTERS YEAR 2017 BRIEF

THIS PROJECT PROPOSES A TEMPORARY CATALYST INITIATIVE TO UNDERUSED SPACES ACROSS CIQ. THE DESIGN FOCUSES ON BRINGING OUT THE HIDDEN CULTURAL VALUE OF THE CIQ BY BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN THE PUBLIC SPACE AND THE COMMUNITY. THE CATALYST WE HAVE PROPOSED WILL ACT LIKE A FACILITATOR TO BRING IN MORE SOCIAL VALUE TO THE AREA AND IT WILL ALSO HELP TO HIGHLIGHT THE EXISTING ART, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES ALREADY HAPPENING IN CIQ, COLLABORATED AND PROMOTED BY DIFFERENT ORGANISATIONS AND CULTURAL FESTIVALS. THE CORE OF THE CATALYST WILL BE ONE CONSTANT ELEMENT TRAVELLING TO DIFFERENT SITES FOR A SET AMOUNT OF TIME, TO ENABLE VARIANT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES IN EACH SITE HIGHLIGHTING THE AREA OF CULTURAL EXPRESSION THROUGH DIFFERENT MEDIUMS.

AS THE CATALYST MOVES TO EACH SITE, IT WILL EVOLVE TO CREATE MEANINGFUL SITE SPECIFIC INTERVENTIONS, AND ONCE THE CATALYST MOVES TO THE NEXT SITE, IT WILL LEAVE A VISUAL AND CULTURAL IMPRINT. SHEFFIELD’S CULTURAL INDUSTRIES QUARTER (CIQ) IS A 30 HECTARE AREA ON THE EDGE OF THE CITY CENTRE ZONED IN 1988 FOR BUSINESSES IN CULTURAL PRODUCTION. THE CULTURAL INDUSTRIES QUARTER CONSERVATION AREA (CIQ) SITS BETWEEN THE CITY CENTER AND THE MIDLAND STATION. THE AREA ENCLOSED BY IMPORTANT STREETS CONTAIN THE SURVIVING REMNANTS OF THE 18TH CENTURY DEVELOPMENT ON THE DUKE OF NORFOLK’S ESTATE AND LATER 19TH CENTURY EXPANSION ALONG THE PORTER BROOK TO THE SOUTH AND SOUTH EAST.

PROMOTER

FOR THE WHOLE CATALYST TO BE BROUGHT TO THE USERS ATTENTION, A PROMOTER WILL BE PLACED IN SHEAF SQUARE. THE LOCATION OF THIS PROMOTIONAL WALL WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HIGH FOOTFALL OF PEOPLE ENTERING THE TRAIN STATION INCLUDING COMMUTERS, STUDENTS, RESIDENTS AND TOURISTS. THE DESIGN WILL ECHO THE VISUAL AESTHETIC OF THE WALL FRAME FROM THE FOUR CATALYST SITES, BRINGING A KEY ELEMENT OF EACH SITE IN ITS DESIGN. THE KEY FRAME WILL HAVE FLIPPING BOARDS AND ELEMENTS FROM EACH SITES CATALYST DESIGN INCLUDING THE HUMAN SCALE SCULPTURES AND RIBBONS. THIS WILL ATTRACT PEOPLE TO LOOK AT THE FRAME AND SEE WHERE ADVERTISED EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES ON THE FLIPPING BOARDS. THIS WILL BRING AWARENESS TO THE CATALYST ACTIVITIES AND LOCATIONS, AS THE CHOSEN SITES MIGHT NOT BE ON THE KEY DESIRE LINES OF THE CITY CENTRE USERS.

THE STRUCTURE WOULD BE A DOUBLE BLACK STEEL FRAME AND FRAMED MIRROR, TEMPORARILY FIXED TO THE GROUND. DURING THE EVENING IT WILL BE LIT WITH A TIMED LED LIGHT POWERED BY A SOLAR PANEL

A STREET ART FESTIVAL IN COLLABORATION WITH ‘SENSORIA’ THE FESTIVAL OF SOUND AND VISION (SEP 30 OCT 07) WILL PROMOTE THE SITE AND OTHER ART IN THE DISTRICT FOR PEOPLE TO ENGAGE AND APPRECIATE THE ART

THE KEY FRAME OF THE WALL WILL BE REMOVED TO BE MOVED AND ADAPTED TO THE NEXT SITE IN STAGE 2. AN IMPRINT OF THE CATALYST WILL ON THIS SITE AND THE ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE TO EVOLVE

THE STRUCTURE WILL CONSIST OF THE KEY STEEL FRAME WITH A PANEL OF RIBBONS AND ADDITIONAL SIDE STEEL FRAMES WITH LOOSE RIBBONS MADE FROM THIN PLASTIC SHEETS, AS WELL AS FABRIC ‘RIBBON’ SWING SEATS

THE STRUCTURE WILL BE PLACED AT THE BACK OF THE SITE, MAKING A BACKDROP FOR EVENTS AND FRAMING A SPACE FOR ACTIVITY AND GATHERING. THE SWING SEATS WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE EXISTING METAL FRAME ON SITE

THE SPACE WILL BE USED AS A STUDENT GATHERING SPACE. SMALL EVENTS COULD ALSO BE HELD TO ALSO ENGAGE WITH THE WIDER COMMUNITY AND FOR PASSIVE RECREATION FOR PASSERBYERS

THE KEY FRAME OF THE WALL WILL BE REMOVED TO BE MOVED AND ADAPTED TO THE NEXT SITE IN STAGE 3. AN IMPRINT OF THE CATALYST WILL ON THIS SITE AND THE ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE TO EVOLVE

THE STRUCTURE WILL BE SELF SUPPORTED. LIGHTS CAN BE USED TO ENHANCE THE SHADOW PERFORMANCES WITH THE FABRIC SHEETS. THE TIMBER PALETTES CAN BE REARRANGED ACCORDING TO THE EVENT REQUIREMENTS

VARIOUS EVENTS COULD UTILISE THE CULTURAL CUBE SUCH AS THE CLASSICAL WEEKEND (MAR 17 MAR 19) WHICH HOSTS AN ASSORTMENT OF MINI-CONCERTS IN BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS

THIS SITE WILL CORRELATE WITH THE FESTIVAL OF ARTS & HUMANITIES (MAY 02 - MAY 22) WHICH IS A CITYWIDE SERIES OF EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS REFLECTING ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN.

THE 2 EXHIBITION FRAMES AND SCULPTURES COULD BE MAINTAINED BY BLOC PROJECTS GALLERY AND THE COLLEGE, WHICH WOULD ALLOW THE GALLERIES TO CONTINUE TO PROMOTE THEIR WORK AND FOR SCHOOLS TO DISPLAY THE STUDENTS WORK

FRAME STRUCTURE TO BE SET UP BY THE TRAIN STATION THROUGHOUT ALL STAGES OF THE PROJECT TO PROMOTE THE CATALYST INTERVENTIONS AS WELL AS OTHER CULTURAL EVENTS IN SHEFFIELD, POTENTIAL SPONSORSHIP FROM EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS

THE VISION OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CREATE A MOVEMENT IN DOWNTOWN CAIRO FOR MORE FEMALE INCLUSIVE PUBLIC SPACES THROUGH ENDER SENSITIVE DESIGN; BRINGING A POSITIVE INPUT TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH AMENITIES AND EVENTS. THE FRAMEWORK AIMS TO CREATE EQUITY GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AND A PLATFORM FOR WOMAN, WHILE BRINGING AWARENESS TO THE PUBLIC OF THE POSITIVE IMPACT THE FEMALE SOCIETY CAN HARVEST. THE SPATIAL DESIGN PROPOSES TO TRANSFORM THE URBAN SPACE FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION; FACILITATING THE EXCLUDED USERS BY PROVIDING A FRAMEWORK FOR CONNECTIVITY AND COMMUNITY STRENGTHENING. THIS PROJECT WAS APART WORKSHOP IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITY OF

SHEFFIELD AND THE EYGPTIAN ARCHITECTURE PRACTICE CLUSTER. KEY FINDINGS WERE DEVELOPED FROM ONSITE ANALYSIS OF THE EXCLUSION OF FEMALES IN PUBLIC SPACES, SUPPORTED BY LITERATURE ON FEMALE INCLUSIVE DESIGN. AN OVERARCHING FRAMEWORK WAS DEVELOPED FOR FEMALE EMPOWERMENT AND A PILOT PROPOSAL. A STRATEGY FOR THE PILOT PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED WITH A STAKEHOLDER AND ACTIVITY NETWORK, PROPOSED PROJECT PHASING AND IT IS INTENDED THAT THE PROJECT WOULD ACT AS A CATALYST IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD FOR MORE INCLUSIVE SPACES; THAT IT WILL BE A SOCIAL NORM FOR WOMEN TO HAVE A STRONGER PRESENCE IN THE PUBLIC SPACE COMMUNITY
