BEY THE LIGHT

2

It’s my daughter, she’s my biggest muse. There’s someone, we all find out soon, more important than ourselves to lose. I feel a deep bond with young children – all those photos in my dressing room – especially those who’ve been stricken, Children I’ve met across the years – they uplift me like pieces of moon, and guide me, whispering in my ear I’m turned to spirits, the emotions of others. And I feel her presence all the time though I never met my grandmother. I learned at a very young age, when I need to tap some extra strength, to put my persona, Sasha, on stage. Though we’re different as blue and red, I’m not afraid to draw from her in performance, rifts, even in bed. I saw a TV preacher when I was scared, at four or five, about bad dreams, who promised he’d say a prayer

If I put my hand to the TV. That’s the first time I remember prayer, an electric current humming through me. You call me a singer, but I’m called to transform, to suck up the grief, anxiety, and loss of those who hear me into my song’s form. I’m a vessel for all that isn’t right, for break-ups and lies and double-cross. I sing into that vessel a healing light. To let go of pain that people can’t bear. I don’t do that myself, I call in the light. I summon God to take me there. Utopias, they don’t much interest me. I always mess things up a bit. It’s chaos, in part, that helps us see. But for my daughter I dream a day when no one roots for others to fail, when we all mean what we say.

B’DAY

LEGACY:

After the Destiny’s Child break-up, Beyoncé released her second solo album ‘B’day’. The album released on the 31st of August, close to Beyoncé’s 25 birthday, which is on September 4. The album was meant to come out in 2004, but was released in 2005 because of Destiny’s Child’s final solo album and her starring role in the movie ‘Dreamgirls’. Beyoncé completed B’day in three weeks in the Sony Music Studios in New York and the album is inspired by the movie ‘Dreamgirls’. The album debuted number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with selling 541,000 copies in the USA in its first week. Beyoncé’s highest first week sales after the self-titled Visual Album. Beyoncé added live-music instruments to some songs of the album, for example ‘Déjà Vu’ which contains bass guitar, conga, hi-hat, horns and the 808 drum. When Beyoncé released the deluxe version of ‘B’day’ she also released the ‘B’day Video Anthology Video Album’, including 13 videos for the songs of the Deluxe album. The reason why Beyoncé wanted to release a video album is she wanted her fans to experience all the videos without logging on on YouTube. “First it was just ‘Green Light’ and ‘Upgrade U’. Let’s sneak in ‘Kitty Kat’. We might as well put in ‘Suga Mama’. We gotta do ‘Get Me Bodied’, that’s the dance record. Gotta do something for ‘Beautiful Liar’, that’s the song with Shakira, of course we know we gotta do a video for that. If I had another week I probably would have shot three more videos. - Beyoncé (Behind The Scenes)” ‘Déjà Vu’ was released as the lead single of the album and ‘Green Light’ was planned as second lead single. Instead of ‘Green Light’, ’Ring The Alarm’ became the second lead single in the United States and later ‘Irreplaceable’ was released worldwide as the second lead single. ‘Ring The Alarm’ became Beyoncé’s highest debut on the Billboard Hot 100, entering at number 12 on the chartlist. ‘Irreplaceable’ became Beyoncé’s fourth number one single in the United States. It was the best-selling single in the United States in 2007 and became Beyoncé’s second single to achieve 200 million audience impressions in 2006 which makes her the second woman to achieve this in history. Irreplaceable sold 4.6 million copies worldwide in 2007. Beyoncé won the ‘Best Contemporary R&B’ Album for B’day at the 2007 GRAMMY Awards. Beyoncé won two MTV Video Music Awards for ‘Check On It’(Best R&B Video) in 2006 and Beautiful Liar(Most Earthshattering Collaboration) in 2007. Beyoncé toured around the world for ‘B’day’ which had an amount of 90 million dollars, which is 102 million in 2014. ‘The Beyoncé Experience’ was Queen Bey’s third concert tour. ‘The Beyoncé Experience’ was the first tour with features her all female band ‘Suga Mama’. ‘“I’m all about female empowerment. I’m all about pushing the envelope. I know it’s my responsibility to do something different. I said, ‘I want a band, I want something different.’” - Beyoncé on her decision to hire women for her all-female band

According to music critics the slow-tempo songs and the Destiny’s Child medley were the highlights of the show. Beyoncé was praised by music critics for her vocal abilities, choreography and performance energy on stage during The Beyoncé Experience tour. The tour contains outfits created by Tina Knowles, House of Deréon, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Elie Saab and Herve Leger. On 16th of November 2007 a live DVD of ‘The Beyoncé Experience’ in Staples Center Los Angeles was released. “She’s the woman with everything: the voice, the moves, the songs, the ideas and the clothes. Her two-hour set was a brilliant pop extravaganza that kept the songs at its center.” - Jon Pareles, The New York Times Facts about B’day: -

‘B’day’ received 3 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

- ‘B’day Anthology Video Album’ received 2 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. -

Three hitsingles; ‘Déjà Vu’, ‘Irreplaceable’ and ‘Beautiful Liar’(a collaboration with Shakira).

-

The ‘B’day Anthology Video Album’ gave Beyoncé the record for the most videos released in twelve months.

-

‘B’day’ received ‘Best Contemporary R&B Album’ at the GRAMMY Awards in 2007.

STAN MONTH OF THE

JASMINE ROLLINS / @JASTASTIC_STEW

14

My name is Jasmine Rollins and I’m out that H-Toooowwwnn (Houston, Texas) and I feel very honored to be selected as Stan Of The Month! It was at the age of 6 when I realized I would be a fan of Beyonce for the rest of my life. Destiny’s Child was opening up for Christina Aguilera and my mother managed to get us front row seats. At the time, the remixed version of “No, No, No” was my favorite song, so I was looking forward to hearing it live. When I heard the beat drop at the concert along with the voice of Wyclef Jean stating, “This is the remix..” I remember placing my finger in the air, and waving it from left to right. But the initial moment when I became a Stan for life was when Beyonce herself came over and noticed me, a young 6 year old, singing word for word with my finger in the air and hand on my hip! She giggled and smiled at the sass I had and continued to perform! From that moment on I decided to serve my country and join forces with fans all over to support Bey. Of course, I bought every CD she put out, had the latest fragrances and purchased every movie she was in. I had my middle school binder covered with the latest pictures of Bey and I damn near ran away from home when I had to miss The Beyonce Experience tour. I almost missed the I am... Sasha Fierce concert because I had knee surgery the week before but I refused to miss another. So I rented me a wheel chair and rolled my ass right to the concert. In 2008, when it was the Single Ladies takeover, I made it my duty to help as many of my friends possible learn that dance! One night at halftime for a basketball game the lights weren’t working but the music was. Someone played Singles Ladies and something just took over my body, I like to consider it the Sasha Fierce Ghost, and I began doing the routine by myself in front of everyone! Slowly, people who knew the dance joined in and it became an actual performance! When the The Mrs. Carter Show came around, my friend I camped outside in the cold for 9 house to assure a close spot, which I know is nothing compared to the amount of time other fans have dedicated just to see Beyonce! For the On The Run Tour my friend I made the decision to witness that concert twice so we bought one regular seat ticket for the first concert... And charged our credit cards for the VIP pit seats at the next! My family members always like consider me as “doing the most” when it comes to Beyonce, but it feels absolutely normal going hard Bey! Through the years or stanning for Bey I was able to witness how amazing of a person she was and the jaw dropping talent she had as an artist, producer, actress any many more! But most importantly, how she became her own boss and continues to remain on top. She has always inspired me in everything I do. Whenever I have to push through and complete something I think of how hard Bey worked to get where she is now. I have been riding with Bey for 14 years now and I have no plans to stop! Through all of the made up rumors, through the drama started within the Hive and with other fans outside the Hive and even through the drought Bey put us through after the release of “4” (harsh times)... I never left! But as much as I like to consider myself the biggest stan of Almighty Bey, I know that there are way more fans out there who stan harder for Bey than me. It makes my day to know that the BeyHive continues to grow stronger everyday and we are not the one to... *Insert profanity* with! So as I am proud to be the first Stan of the Month, it is only right to share it with the rest of the Beyhive as we all stan for one... Beyonce!

MY BEYONCÉ EXPERIENCE My Beyoncé experience… A day I will never forget! This was our first time ever purchasing VIP pit section tickets. 4th in line, my friend and I anxiously waited, wanting to know if we were the only ones skipping the party and heading over to the pit section. In my eyes everyone in the pit section were enemies, but little did I know I would come across a group of amazing people to share this experience with who were too in quest for “the money seats!” In line, we met two handsome guys who wanted to know what was our plan for the pit section and I couldn’t lie to them because they were family; the Beyhive family! Right away he asked could they tag along and if we got separated they would save us a spot and we would do the same. Of course we agreed and began to talk everything Beyonce! A few minutes later the doors opened and the race was on. My heart had to be beating at an unhealthy rate, but my health was not going to stop me from getting to Bey. Some people moved slow as they entered, taking there time to gaze at the merchandise. But you could instantly tell who had pit seats by the way everyone was crowing around the escort to be the first behind him... And also by the noticeable wrist bands that read “OTR PIT.” So the four us, including our new friends were looking for the nearest way to leave the escort to be on our way, but unfortunately he said we had to go to the party first. We weren’t buying it. The escort eventually lead us through multiple escalators to the top of the stadium in the opposite direction we wanted to go. Once we arrived at the party, our two new friends left to get drinks while my friend and I searched for the nearest exit. We ran into this clueless security guard and asked could we leave the party to which he replied, “ummm sure.” So then the race officially was on. My heart rate had to increase by a ton at this point. My friend went to go get our new friends to let them know we could leave, but they said they couldn’t pass up free wine. So we left them behind and told them we would save them a spot anyways. I didn’t want to take off running so others could see what I was doing, but my body thought other wise. As we started sprinting I noticed a small group of people starting to follow us. They were pit section people! My sprint then turned into a “run for your life, there’s a serial killer behind you,” I was gone. But I had no clue where to go so it wasn’t long before they caught up to an out of shape girl. So we decided to all link up and find the quickest way to the floor. But mind you we still have no clue how to get to the floor. We eventually run into a worker and we all began shouting out of breath, “how do we get to the floor?” “The floor, take us to the floor!” He leads us to elevator, we hop in, and we become dumbfounded again. The elevator makes no sense! There wasn’t a G for ground, LL for lower level, F for floor or nothing. But thankfully the worker notices the strange looks on our faces and proceeds to press a button that takes us all the way down. Once the elevator touches down, the amazing race part two begins. We dart out the elevator with no sense of direction and begin running around looking for a sign that leads us to the stage while screaming with excitement like we had no home training. As I’m running I start to notice band equipment, stage equipment and people dressed in all black with headphones and earpieces. Something isn’t right, but we proceed. We have no clue where to go but we’re running at high speeds like we do. Still running ahead of the group, I hear one of the guys who tagged along yell, “Julius, there’s Julius!” I turn around and there stands Julius, saying “no pictures!”

16

17

I stood in awe shocked and surprised! If Julius is close... Bey is even closer! I looked around Julius before he ushered us away, and right behind him was the dressing room sign!! We passed up Beyonce’s dressing room!! As we took off running again, I hear music and a tall boy with an afro on a skateboard heading my way. It was Laurent, one of the Les Twins!!! I fumbled to get my phone out to ask for a picture; he was coming close. I get my phone ready and the nerves to ask him for a picture but he declines and taps me on the shoulder.... Fair enough in my book! He touched me!! So we take off running again and it finally hits me... We aren’t supposed to be here: we’re backstage!! I start looking around as I take off running again and I notice people with legit backstage passes and not the fake VIP lanyard they gave us. I couldn’t believe we found our way to backstage and not one security guard is stopping this group of screaming people. We even passed up a large group of police and they didn’t even stop us! Eventually we come across a sign that reads “stage” and we finally come across an entrance to the pit. We make our way through more crew members with legit badges and we see the pit section in sight; we made it! We calm our nerves and begin to walk, we can breathe now, we did it. As we turn to enter the gates for the pit section a man slams his arm across my chest. I look at him with disgust and flash my wristbands and lanyards, expecting him to know who I am and how much I paid-- so let me through! He stops us again, and tells us all we are not supposed to be here and how did we even get here! We all begin to shout again how we’re VIP and we bought pit tickets, once again flashing all of our wristbands and lanyards. He rudely tells us, pointing to our lanyards, “these VIP lanyards mean nothing!” And goes on to tell us we cannot be down here yet. We begin to complain like little kids being punished. My heart begins to sink and fill with failure; I won’t get “the money seats.” The security guard has a man escort us back to the VIP party, and we all mope the entire way back. He let’s us off at the top floor and once he left, we took off again! We were not staying at that party! Buy this time, our two new buddies are with us after a couple of drinks! They got information that we were supposed to enter from a different area so we begin to follow them as they lead! We make our way to a sign that reads Floor Access and we come to another security check in. They check for our wristbands and tickets and we take off again running down a zigzag ramp that I thought would never end! This was THE longest ramp of my life! Every corner we turned I thought it was the end, but it wasn’t! I wasn’t aware that our two new friends went cycling very morning so this sprint down the ramp was slight work. My friend and I on the other hand, had to stop multiple times to bend over and clutch our chest. I had to keep reminding my friend and I to do it for Bey-- keep going! We were both about ready to just give up and head to the nearest water fountain. After literally five minutes of non stop running, we reach the floor level again! We walk onto the floor, this time not coming from behind the stage and we all notice the difference in which the way we were supposed to go. We take off running through the floor seats towards the stage until.... Another security guard stops us! He begins to tell us that we cannot be down here yet! We all then become angry because it is now 6:30 and general admission is now being allowed in! He proceeds to tell us that no one is allowed to be down here and he will have to escort us back. At this moment, I could’ve just about broke in to tears. There was no way possible I would get “the money seats” now. He takes us back and no one in the group is speaking... We feel defeated. The security guard mistakenly takes us to the main level and not to the top where the party is. I still have no hope for us getting “the money seats” but the two guys refused to give up! We go back to the never ending maze and begin to confront every security guard we came across making sure we were allowed in because I wouldn’t survive going down this ramp a third time! Once we reached the bottom yet again, security guards started to recognize us and began laughing because they knew the struggle we just went though to reach the pit section for a third time. Even one of the security guards yelled out to us and said “there goes the troublemakers!” I found nothing funny as I was literally dripping in sweat from this 5k around the Cowboys stadium I did not sign up for. And I was still sad because for sure “the money seats” were occupied. We make our way through the floor seats again. Looking up ahead I see no human flesh standing in the pit section! My friend and I still had a chance. Dashing though the seats, we had our hand with the wristbands on high in the air so no security guard had to check us! We turned the corner climbed up the steps, and there awaited THE MONEY SEATS! The group of us all crowded in and instantly began to scream together with joy. We did it!
