Fountain Primary School

Fountain Primary School, Leeds, UK Design & Community: Master plan and playing hub design

Worked with real client(Fountain Primary School) to produced a full outdoor master plan and detail playing hub design. Examined concept and at the same time designed within budget to fulfilled the client brief. After several amendments with client, our design was fully accepted by them and delivered to the next funding stage. Fountain Primary School expressed a need to provide a multi-functional space for all of its pupils, teachers and parents. Although the school grounds are a fun space for pupils and their horticultural work is proudly displayed, the site was lacking a central hub. The school has a fantastic layout but will benefit immensely from utilising its currently undeveloped centre.

Phasing Plan Risk in play is all about creating challenging experiences for the child, who will learn to test their own limits by figuring out what they can and can’t achieve. By pushing themselves they can explore personal boundaries allowing the child to learn about their own personal health and safety. These combined aspects of risk in play benefit the child by making them adept at assessing risks and increases confidence levels.

Fountain’s Junction

Diverse spaces, featuring sensory elements to encourage imaginative play, as well as exhibiting children’s work and showcasing performances.

Fountain’s Safari

Educational space with supervised access. Theme consisting of elements created on engagement day by pupils. Series of interactive trails and habitats with dramatic over sized grasses.

Adventure Play trail

Continuation of the existing oak play equipment. Earth mounds and troughs add extra interest. Designed using only materials and will require minimal maintenance.

Nature Trail

Intimate woodland walk experience. Built up underlayer with child friendly planting. Home to insect hotels and other habitats the pupils will help create. Pond to have restricted access.

Natural Trail Continuing the “story and journey to this natural trail and provide a discovery experiences for pupils through the divided varied habitat spaces.

Connecting the organic flow to this particular area for scientific and discovery natural trail, pupil follow the curved journey throughout this garden and experiencing different kind of mini natural habitats by direct interacting in the spaces.

Design Process

-Initial sketch out the idea of different zoning and path connection

-Defined zoning and start to outline detail

-Confirm planting areas and surfaces textures

Client Meeting & Exhibition

Armley Mill Industrial Museum

Armley Mill Industrial Museum, UK Public garden design

Continue from the understanding and analysis of the Armley area and defined relevant issues, we developed a broad design vision for the Armley valley to create a better connection and lively place for the neighborhood. Besides that, our main approach is to connect people within the site and form a community by providing areas and places that all age groups can gather. After that, we developed a specific detail site design and presented to the owner of Armley Mills Industry museum. I selected the public garden which trying to express the theme of ‘ Nature at the Mill’, functioning as a places for groups of visitors to gather, learn and picnic, at the same time providing new habitats through planting to promote biodiversity and nature.

Design Layout Plan The main idea of the design is to open up a clear circulation in the middle of the site and create 2 different place which are divided by the main pathway. The first area which is facing the river aire, by designing a raised platform allow public to appreciate the view and experience of passing through the trees. Between the space of the stairs are design as sitting area, provide enough place for public to rest and watch the performance on the stage which is located in the middle of the site. With the sitting area, it combining the planting bed which consist of designed plant and the historical industrial machine for exhibit. At the other Area which facing the Armley mills industrial museum is design to be more relaxing and calm, which contain the secondary pathway and also another platform to maximize the view to the museum.

Landscape Resources Centre, Leeds Design & Build elective project

A design and build elective module was launched and we a group of 5 were asked to design and construct a small garden in the university’s Landscape Resources Centre. After analyzed the site issue and proposed the garden design to our lecturer, we were separated into different responsibility to implement the design, included construction drawing, planting palate, calculate budget. From this, we also gain lots of experiences on the real construction works and gardening skills, it provide a solid first-hand experience from the design stage to construction implementation.

Concept

The concept of this garden design is creating a boardwalk experience through the small existing woodland site, integrated with this natural trees and plants which create an immersed experience. With the Polygonal path allow people to have different views into and from the site. Within the pathway, the segmental line was set to house diverse plants in a geometrical way.

Urban Study on Brickfields

Urban Study on Brickfields, KL Regeneration of Brickfields, Little India

As a final project of diploma of architecture, our research and study area were in Brickfields, KL. This Urban study project gave us an opportunity to discover this diverse and deep cultural urban area, by analyzing different aspect of the site, like transportation circulation, site character, build form, lead us to understand more about the site. After that, we developed a master plan and public plaza design which is appropriate to the site.

Site Context Brickfields is a small to medium-sized town and residential neighborhood(as well as an administrative zone) located just outside central Kuala Lumpur. It is known as Kuala Lumpur little India due to the high percentage of Indian residents and businesses.

Site Analysis

Environmental Analysis

Vehicular Traffic Analysis

Pedestrian Traffic Analysis

Zoning Analysis

Brickfields is known for its multi-colored streets and festivals of the Indian society here in Malaysia. Without a doubt, Brickfields possesses a strong cultural background and is still proudly maintaining it through many on-going festive celebrations such as Deepavali, Thaipusum etc The community in Brickfields is very much friendly and are welcoming to other races and celebrations as well. For instance, they celebrate their own festivals such as Deepavali with other races whether Chinese, Malays or even foreigners. They also celebrate Christmas at Brickfields as there are many churches in this area. Thus, the community comes together as one and live like the slogan says, :One Malaysia.

Vegetation Analysis

Public Amenities Analysis

Master Plan

After analysed and studied the site we design a new master plan for it .There are some objective that we want this site become to: -Tourist attraction place -Improve their business -Proper social Area for them -Proper pedestrian circulation -A place for study Indian culture -More trees and green area -Provide a more safety and clean for people -Easy access circulation -Encourage recycle -Public toilet

Nostalgia of Little India The things gone which are still there, but just cannot seen by them. Once the things are there, Everyone start to remember the past.

Urban Plaza Design

The concept of the urban plaza is based on the Indus Valley civilization, back to Indian origin. Their lifestyles is all rely on the river, and the river nourish Indian culture as one of the great civilization. The plaza provide a proper social area for the community and to help their economy. Beside that, it is also design as a tourist attraction area. There are many Indian performance, activities, and festival celebration at the plaza.

Internship’s Works

Internship’s Works Vary design proposals & drawings

After took a short break from university in April 2014, I managed to get a 6 months internship opportunity in a Malaysian landscape architecture firm call “Just Right Design. It is consider a quite successful firm in Malaysia and they obtain several notable landscape design awards including To 10 landscape firm in Malaysia. Projects range over residential, commercial and public landscape.

Mix-Development Public Park

I have the honour to get involved as an assistant landscape designer and worked with highly motivated colleagues. The size of this firm is just around 10 persons, so we can communicate easily and effectively. Worked in a family concept based firm really helped me to learn many things proficiently, especially technical landscape detail and project management. During this 6 months internship, my primary task was mainly in initial landscape design proposal, it really enhanced my drawing and visual communication skills.

Condominium Landscape Proposal

There are several things I learned and take it from this internship work: It is not about working harder, but working smarter. In the beginning of this internship, I was really struggle in the works. It was really intense and I need to complete 3 or 4 design proposal in a week, that was really shocked me and definitely would said it as a real world “culture shock. It was so different from academic works, without any site visit or detail information, but just some rough brief to design. Working as a team means we have to collaborate very well, and during a tied deadline, we really need to work smarter to deliver the achievable product. Through that, I learned how to do effective and effortless work to fit the goal and objective of the task.

Residential Landscape Proposal

Try to leave office on time, there are always something to do. In the first 3 months, I was given many design projects and I was so passionately want to design them well. In the result, I often overtime or worked in the weekend to try to get them done, it impressed my colleagues and boss, but I lost lots of time with my friends and family and I didn’t have much personal times to do things that I love. I was always exhausted and felt depress when I got home, wondering is that the working life I really wanted. But suddenly I realised there are always work to do, and I wanted to balance the work and life and would not lose the passion on them. Thus, I learned time management is extremely important, work effectively in office and always leave on time to spend time with loves one.

Residential Landscape Proposal

Practicality rather than concept. This is the one I found really different from university’s works, in the real world it is alway demanding the budget and practicality of the project rather than its concept. Concept and design aesthetic become less important when the budget is tight. What I have learned is that even it is hard to apply our designer dreams into the project, we still can educate our client and dong our best to design something good but still under the restraint.

Indoor Play Area Proposal

Condominium Podium Design

Communication is the key. Landscape architecture is a multi-disciplinary profession. We are working with many other profession like architect, engineer, supplier, contractor, etc. The only way to have a successful project is communicate well. There will be many problems in the process that we could not anticipate, how to communicate well together and make the best decision is the key. I was followed to go some of the client meeting and observed my colleague presenting the proposal to them, how to convince the client is really need a good sales skill.

Retirement Home Master Plan Design

After the short 6 months internship, I get a glimpse of what the “real practical world are, it was quite terrified but I think that is what the challenge really are. My boss once said this profession is about the passion of making wonderful places for people to enjoy, although the income is to particularly high, but we gain our satisfaction and achievement through it, and be proud of it.

Freehand Sketches Observation & Exploration drawings

As a landscape architecture student, I found that sketching on site is a pleasant thing to do. It allows you to experience the site and express it in your own way. By observational sketching, it allow me to respond and understand the site deeper, study each of their unique characters and landscapes, way better than just taking photograph.

Photography has fascinated me since I was a child, I was intrigued by how quick camera can capture and record a single moment in to an image. Hence I totally agree ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’. I especially like candid street photography, that allows you to observe the street and surrounding thoroughly. Then find out the extraordinary moment in an ordinary mediocre daily street life.
