Commencement Program
May 14, 2022
These Commencement proceedings are a celebration of the achievements of our students, faculty, and honorees--as well as a show of appreciation to the loved ones who have supported those achievements. Out of respect for those we honor here, and those who have come to acknowledge and celebrate their good work, we ask that you do all you can to create a congenial atmosphere. Please silence cell phones and refrain from any behaviors that might interfere with or disrupt these proceedings.
A digital recording of the ceremony will be available at www.ycp.edu/commencement a few days after the event.

Honorary Degree in Absentia Recipient President Volodymyr Zelensky
York College presents an honorary degree, in absentia, to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and in honor of the Ukrainian people. In doing so, the College joins a growing list of institutions recognizing his heroism and his courageous efforts to protect the freedoms afforded by democracy for the citizens of Ukraine. President Zelensky motivated the collective courage of his own citizens and the broader world in defense of freedom and democracy. Zelensky was born to Jewish parents in the industrial metropolis of Kryvyy Rih in southern Ukraine (part of the former U.S.S.R.). When he was a child, his family relocated to Erdenet, Mongolia, for four years before returning to Kryvyy Rih, where Zelensky entered school. He grew up as a native Russian speaker, but also acquired fluency in both Ukrainian and English. In 1995, he entered Kryvyy Rih Economic Institute, the local campus of Kyiv National Economic University, and in 2000, he graduated with a law degree. Zelensky then pursued comedy and created the production company Kvartal 95, which produced films, cartoons, and TV shows, including the TV series Servant of the People, in which Zelensky played the role of the Ukrainian president. The series aired from 2015 to 2019 and was immensely popular. A political party bearing the same name as the television show was created in March 2018 by employees of Kvartal 95 and helped launch his political career and run for the presidency. Zelensky was elected president of Ukraine in April 2019. Although he was a political novice, his platform won him widespread support, and his significant online following translated into a solid electoral base. He won a landslide victory over incumbent Petro Poroshenko in the second round of the 2019 presidential election. Of late, President Zelensky’s leadership during the Russian invasion of Ukraine has put his leadership in the national spotlight as his country responds fiercely to the unprovoked attack.

Mr. Joseph McGinty Nichol
McG is a filmmaker who has directed ten feature films and eight television pilots. His career in Hollywood began in the mid ‘90s when he co-wrote the #1 songs Fly, Every Morning, and Someday for childhood friends Sugar Ray. During this time, he also directed over fifty music videos for artists such as Sublime, Smashmouth, and Sean “Puffy” Combs. McG’s feature film debut was the blockbuster Charlie's Angels. The film debuted at #1 and marked the biggest opening ever for a first-time director. Other films and stars directed by McG include Matthew McConaughey in We Are Marshall, Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, and Chris Pine in This Means War, and Kevin Costner in 3 Days to Kill. McG also wrote, produced, and directed The Babysitter films for Netflix. To date, his feature films have grossed over $1.2 billion at the box office. McG is also the executive producer of over 800 hours of prime-time network television, including the cultural phenomenon The OC, and the longest-running science fiction show in American television history, Supernatural. In 2001 McG founded his production company Wonderland Sound and Vision. Wonderland produced the breakout hits Tall Girl, The Duff, I Feel Pretty, Holiday, and Love Hard. McG is currently working with James Cameron on the remake of True Lies and his current project is a film adaption of the international best-seller Uglies, starring Joey King. This fall McG will be directing Family Leave starring Jennifer Garner. McG is the only person in Hollywood history to have written a #1 song, produced a #1 TV show, and directed a #1 movie. McG is an avid contributor to various initiatives including the Motion Picture & Television Fund, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Autism Speaks, and The Actors Fund. He most recently gifted iPads to every student in the graduating class of Crenshaw High School to facilitate remote learning during COVID-19 shutdowns.

Following retirement as a full-time faculty member, Dr. Blanding plans to continue as an adjunct faculty member for the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department. MR. RON RENTZEL, who began working at York College in 1995, is known by students and faculty alike for his pleasant demeanor, excellent sense of humor, and dedication to his students. Rentzel had that special knack for making science—from the complex concepts about mechanics, electricity, light, and sound to the specialized, scientific-thinking skills involving hypotheses, testing, reforming a hypothesis and drawing conclusions— accessible, understandable, and doable. These are skills every York College graduate should possess. Ron also possessed the perfect demeanor for an instructor of science-for-non-majors’ courses. He was relaxed, affable, approachable, and non-threatening, yet insistent. He gained his students' trust from the first day of the semester with his disarming humor and his folksy manner. His students were comfortable asking questions, even simple questions, and Rentzel had the patience and necessary pedagogical skills to explain in a way that a non-science layperson could understand. He was, however, not an easy instructor. He was demanding and exacting, and he worked to elevate his students’ thinking and skills, ensuring that they had a thorough and deep understanding of all key concepts and that they acquired the sound technical skills needed to work with the wide array of equipment needed throughout the experiments in each course. This was no mean feat. Physics concepts are quite complex, and the experiments are very technical, but Rentzel had a way of conveying complexity to his students in a way that was understandable—even enjoyed—by most everyone in his courses. Rentzel's colleagues and friends at the College will miss him. He established a presence, and gave everything he had each day to being the best instructor and colleague he could be. Rentzel received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, General Science from York College of Pennsylvania.
Academic Regalia The medieval scholar wore a clerical robe so all would know his station in society. The clerical type robe was appropriate, since all students were expected to become part of the clergy. Distinctions have always been made among the academic grades. Thus, the robe of the doctor is more elaborate than that of the master and the master’s is different than the undergraduate student’s. Academic regalia has always consisted of three parts—the gown, the hood, and the cap. There is considerable variation in European universities. In 1893, a system was adopted in the United States so that one could tell at a glance the university where the degree was earned, the field of study in which the degree was earned, and the level of the earned degree. Most robes are black, although occasionally a particular university may adopt a robe of another color such as Harvard in adopting the crimson as its own. Doctoral robes are longer, fuller, and more richly trimmed with bands of velvet down the front and on the sleeves. These can be black or symbolize a field of study. The master’s gown has sleeves usually cut above the elbow and the bachelor’s gown is a simple pleated robe. The cap of most American universities is usually the stiff, square black traditional mortarboard with black tassel. The doctoral cap may have a gold tassel with the tassel worn on the left. Many European universities favor the soft beret-type cap and a few American institutions use this type. The hood is the most interesting and colorful part of the regalia. The largest hood is the doctor’s while the smallest is the bachelor’s hood. The color, or colors, of the hood’s lining, arranged in chevrons, symbolizes the colors of the college or university which granted the degree. Thus, York College of Pennsylvania has chevrons of green and white. The velvet trim, visible at the neck, indicates the field of study in which the degree was earned. Some frequently seen hood colors and the fields of study are as follows: Golden yellow ~ Science White ~ Arts and Letters Light blue ~ Education
Dark blue ~ Philosophy Lemon ~ Library Science Pink ~ Music
Drab ~ Business Apricot ~ Nursing Scarlet ~ Theology
Mace The university mace, used during present-day commencement and convocation exercises, has its roots in the 13th century when it was held by the protector of a sovereign at official meetings. The College’s official mace, carried by the Head Marshal, was created by Edward Glatfelter ’48, and presented in 1961 to York Junior College President Dr. Ray Miller. It is comprised of two pieces of wood said to have come from the buildings of the oldest schools in the College’s lineage: York County Academy (1787) and York Collegiate Institute (1871). The smaller black maces, carried by other Marshals during the procession, are the earliest versions of the College’s academic mace, first used during the commencement exercises of 1959. Using the College’s mace to lead the procession during commencement exercises has been a tradition for over 50 years.
