Much has been written concerning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to eliminate four Oscar categories from the 2019 live broadcast. Among those categories was Live Action Short. Although after protests the decision was reversed, the mere thought of relegating short film to a footnote in the broadcast begs the question: Can short film survive and thrive outside of Hollywood mainstream? Ironically, it is short film that keeps this industry humming. Making short films gives new talent a chance to hone their skills and find their style. Short films also allow for experimentation and new and creative storytelling which then feeds into mainstream filmmaking. Bluntly, short film is the foundation of the Hollywood empire. So how does short film survive and thrive? Film festivals and their audiences. I often find it hard to believe that I know people who have never seen a short film. Until recently, it actually makes sense since theaters limited their screen time to features, and cable and streaming had not yet begun their more “out of the box” programming. With the rise of film festivals, shorts have been able to become more than just an educational film school project but have risen to “must see” viewing. It is the audience that buys their tickets and gives these films the platform they deserve. As audiences have become more interested in short films, their attendance has allowed filmmakers greater opportunities in terms of financing and distribution. The growth of film festivals and the audiences that continue to grow gives great hope to the future of short films in America. As we pay tribute these next 4 days to this years’ group of talented filmmakers, UFFyc also wishes to thank our audience. It is because of your love and devotion to this art form that season 8 is possible. - Karen Collins, Festival Director 3
