“Aurora Borealis The Aurora Borealis is the most spectacular natural phenomenon that takes place in the latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Most auroras occur at the night and these stunning lights can be seen from late November to March. The color scheme of the Aurora Borealis could be effectively used for an office building because of the varied hues which are not too strong. The main colors of the Aurora are light green, dark green, ultra violet and red; moreover, there is a set of beautiful colors present in the northen environment, such as light blue,dark-blue, black, white, the light-dark brown of wood, and the silver white of sparkling stars in the sky. This is a good combination of color schemes to use in a contemporary building. According to research, Aurora Borealis will be hard to see after this year (2016), Some research even states that after 2017 the aurora may not occur for a decade. Therefore, it is a good time to add the Aurora into a building.

Aesthetic The color scheme of this space is a set of colors taken from the colors of the Aurora Borealis, but I chose the main color to be white of the snow rather than the darkness of white. The main materials used in this space are rough wood, laminate, glass, and mirror panels. Many of these materials will be finished in glossy paint of various colors including yellow, violet, white, and teal. Most of the doors in this building will have yellow frames which will be designed to match with the company’s logo. I also use National Geographic photos in the building. The proportion of the each color that is used designed specifically for each area. For example, the office uses the most white materials to make the space as bright as possible. However, the store has a lot of reflective materials. I also think of the sustainability as well. The main focal point of the space is the atrium which has the circular stair and elevator in the middle. In this space the natural light can go through from the skylight down to the basement. The other main part of the project is the office which is located on the second floor. All of the rooms on the second floor except for the restrooms have the natural light, either from the outside of the building or from the atrium in the middle.

The Open Office The design of the space is based on the needs of office workers. I designed this space to use natural light as much as possible, and the overall color scheme is the brightest in the building. I used wood floating ceiling hanging below an exposed painted ceiling. The tables are made custom for each work station, with a curve carved out at every seat which gives a feeling of comport and provacy to the workers.
21
National Geographic’s Headquarters
Office Reception This space is the main focal point of the second level. Since this space is located behind the main glass sculpture elevator which is the main focal point of this building, I use a soft color scheme of teal and white to not distract fromf the beautiful main focal point
22
Private Office I decided to use glass panels to let natural light into the private office as much as possible. Also, there is a beautiful view of the glass sculpture in the middle of the atrium. For the design of the private office, I use white walls to make rooms look clean. Moreover, I use the carpet in all private offices to keep the rooms quiet.
23
National Geographic’s Headquarters
24
The Cafe’ This space is located in the corner of first floor so there is a lot of natural light. I chose dark blue marble flooring combined with a one marble wall to give a high-end feeling to the space. There is a curved glass sculptural piece suspended from the ceiling to match with the Aurora Borealis concept. There are about 60 seats to provide enough room for the office workers , since this project is located in the middle of the park and far from other cafe’.
25
National Geographic’s Headquarters
26
The Store The store is the darkest area of the building. I decided to used the contemporary design for this space. Most of the walls are made of black glass which has a similar atmosphere to where the Aurora takes place. I also use the lighting fixtures that look like stars in the middle of the space, which when reflected continue infinitely like stars in the night. There is also a rack for clothing. The main middle table is for books and small gadgets. The teal built-in shelf is for more expensive items. The most featured item will be in the yellow frame with the wood panel.
27
National Geographic’s Headquarters
The Exhibition Space I designed a clean atmosphere for the exhibition space. Since this space needs to show art pieces, the design should not catch attention of viewers. I designed this place to have natural light as much as possible, so this space is located in a corner of the site.

“Coral Reef 12 AM The art of shapes / The colors / What coral reef does / Thetime/ What is coral reef/. From all of these, through the design, the space will show the meaning of Coral Reef at 12 AM. In the night, unique fish species are active and dominte the coral reef. It is the same as the concept of the store, which is opened for unique customers who have good taste and find organic, clean, and good food. The shapes of things you can find in the concept will be transformed to geometric shapes and lines in the modern-industrial style. The materials used will be modern dark high-end industrial, such as stone, marble, and stainless steel. All of these materials will be integrated with the concept to give the result of a mix of high quality market and an affordable place for the urban community.

Space Planning This site is long and quite narrow, so I divided this space into three parts, which are prepared food, cafe’ and the market. According to the program, the most important part of the space is the prepared food, so I decided to locate it in the front of this space which is on the left of the floorplan; there is the main focal point of the space too. The next areas are located in the middle which are the open kitchen and cafe’. The bar and lounge are the seating area for prepared food. In this area, the customers can decide to look at the view of the beautiful kitchen or outside view. The last area of this space is the market. I decided to put the market here because this area has the best circulation; since there are three entries for the space.

Aesthetic The overal design is based from the concept “Coral Reef 12 AM. So the space is quite dark inside. Most materials have a dark tone, to give a highend feeling to the space. Moreover, I also provide enough light for some focal points to attract customers from outside of the space too. I chose reflective materials such as glass, mirror, and stainless steel as well, which will provide a high-end feeling and make the space appear larger. There are stainless steel coral reef abstracted pieces from the ceiling all over the space to separate the areas and also can be for way finding, too.
Prepared Foods This area is the main space of this site. Tony’s Kitchen & Market provide a variety of foods for their consumers, such as prepared foods, hot foods, salad bar, soup, self service foods, dessert and coffee. So this area needs to be clear and clean as much as possible to make room for customers walking around and to not block other customers. Since there are so many sections, I decided to separate it into four counters. To save the cost, I decided to locate only one cashier in this space. However, if there are many customers the dessert and drink counter can be one of the check out, too.

The Lounge The lounge is located next to the wine market, so the consumers can choose the wine from the market and have a seat in the lounge. The lounge is also placed next to the cafe’, so the customers can order snack or food from the kitchen too.
The Cafe’ There are 38 seats for customers. It is a middle size cafe’. There are nine tables of two and five tables of four; However, these tables can be combined to make a big table for a party of five or more. I decided to use all glass walls for the cafe which can make the space look larger.

The Market The market is the largest space in the building. There are a lot of organic items, such as meats, fruits, vegetables, dry foods, juices, cheeses, frozen foods, and so on. It is separated into different areas. The shelves are made specifically for individual items. There are a couple of highlightdd shelves. Since this is a high ceiling space, but I do not want to block the natural light I designed a lot of coral reef geometrical pieces from the ceilng with attached LED light in some of the pieces to have a beautiful light in the night .

The Market Check-out The check-out is the main focal point of this area with the slightly different colors and shapes. I used all white material and gold on the front and side surfaces. This area is big enough to have two check-out
62
The Wine Market The wine market is a part of the market but I decided to separate it from the cafe’ section, because customers can choose the wine from here to drink at their seats. I designed a clear space for the customers from the market to shop here as well.

“Japanese Tea Garden” The Japanese tea garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. It was developed during Japan’s medieval period. Traditionally, it was a small space between garden entry and teahouse. The more beautiful houses had the more beautiful gardens. They were made to impress hosts and guests. For the guest, it was like a ‘welcome’ for them. This meaning and purpose were important in the past, but nowadays the Japanese Tea Garden is a touristy place simply because of its beauty. The atmosphere of the garden can bring the house calmness and coziness with its light brown Japanese wood and green trees. Furthermore, some additional elements may help the aesthetic of the space such as , using some colors of the flower, Japanese textures, or elements from nature.

Aesthetic The Main material of this space is bamboo. The color scheme of this space is comprised of calm colors, starting from the light wood to white with some green and ending with light-blue. There arre some strong colors used such as maroon of the fabric and some colors used for the pictures or posters. The home has a Japanese feeling. I designed some Japanese items for the space such as the light fixture in the living room. The main areas of the house are located on the perimeter to have beautiful views of San Francisco.

The Living Space I created this space based on the concept “Japanese Tea Garden“. To separate the space from the entry I decided to add a small steps from the door to the living room. Between the door and the living space there is a small Japanese Garden. I decided to give it more of a Japanese feeling by using Japanese light fixtures and by using some Japanese fabric. This is a big open space in which we can see through to the dining space and kitchen as well.

“High Renaissance The Renaissance architecture is the architecture from the early 15th and 17th centuries in Europe. It was developed in Florence, after that it is spreaded to the other Italian cities. The style shows the symmetry, proportion and geometry. The High Renaissance started circa1500 and lasted 1525.
During that era, there were so many art pieces that were made. Especially, there were so many popular sculptures made by famous artists. The most famous sculpture was David, which is a standing male nude made of white marble, created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo, which is one of his masterpiece.

HANA HANA is a retail store located in Bangkok (Thailand). For this project, I had a teammate to help for designing a new retail store for scarf and tote bag. The concept of this store was plant nursery. The concept was based on products of this store which are flower patterns on their products. I decided to use contemporary and Japanese style to match with their style of products too (Hana is a Japanese word which means flower).
