In the pages that follow, it’s easy to see why so many choose our Town, to work, to place and to call home. Nestled on the south-eastern shores of Lake Simcoe, our community spans 42 kilometres of beautiful shoreline, offering beautiful sunsets that are second to none. Offering year round activities geared both to the young and young at heart, there is always something to do in Georgina. Known for our beautiful beaches and parks, we are a favourite summer destination for those looking to get away for that special family time. Whether you are looking to set up camp at Sibbald Point Provincial Park, fish and boat on our glistening waterways, or just have some ‘you’ time in picturesque setting, you have found the right place. Once again this year we are working in co-operation with the Town of Georgina and the Georgina Chamber of Commerce to publish an informative guide to help make your visit both an enjoyable and memorable one. a Destination for all seasons! A visit to Georgina on the south shore of beautiful Lake Simcoe will provide fun for the whole family year round. Just an hour’s drive north of Toronto, you will find one of the finest vacation spots in the country featuring beautiful countryside, pleasant villages with friendly people and our greatest attraction - Lake Simcoe. At one time, Lake Simcoe and all the lands surrounding it were covered by a much larger glacial lake called Lake Algonquin. Lake Simcoe has one of the highest fish populations of any freshwater lake on the continent. Avid anglers visit in every season and almost always go home with a catch. In winter, snowmobiles are a way of life on Lake Simcoe and hundreds of fish hut operators will outfit and happily guide you to the best spots to drop your line. Local anglers and faraway visitors come and enjoy the challenge and hospitality of the area’s fishing derbies and competitions. Make sure you book a stop at Georgina’s Recreational Outdoor Campus (The ROC), which combines high quality sports and adventure based activities in an ultimate outdoor playground. Feel the wind in your hair as you enjoy the tube and terrain park

where you can whisk down more than 100 feet on its snow tube course or perfect your snowboarding skills while playing on one of the four available runs. For the younger set or more cautious, the ROC’s free toboggan hill is guaranteed fun. But if careening down the slopes is a little too fast for your liking, you can run, walk, hike or snowshoe on one of the facilities many spectacular trails. Enjoy the view of the hill from the warmth and comfort in front of the fire in the spectacular Chalet while you grab a bite to eat or sip a hot chocolate to warm up. When the ice breaks up, spring brings us boating activities of all kinds. Perch anglers dot the shorelines and river banks. Golf courses come alive. Scenic drives along the

lakeshore allow you to take in the beauty of the lake in its many moods featuring the birds, clouds and sunsets for which it is renowned. During warm months, The ROC offers a whole host of activities for the entire family, including a ropes course, climbing wall, 300-ft. zip line, a water play splash pad, plenty of hiking trails, a comprehensive cycling course, and numerous volleyball, tennis and basketball courts. Pack a lunch, get something from the Canteen or enjoy a sit-down meal at the Chalet. The south shore of Lake Simcoe is rich in culture, history and nature. It has been the home of a number of famous Canadian writers, and the area is full of lovely summer homes. The tree-covered, rolling hills and winding rivers to the south are home to many charming and productive farms, picturesque from seed time to harvest. Georgina’s woods, hedgerows and gardens are home to wildlife of all kinds with a splendid collection of birds, attracting “birders” from all over. The Sutton Fair celebrates its 160th year August 6th to the 9th. It is one of Canada’s oldest and most popular fair & horse shows. Georgina is also home to many festivals (See events). With its breathtaking colour, autumn is a delight to the golfer, painter or photographer. On foot or on bicycle, you can experience the fresh air, the smell, the sounds of the lake and its river inlets with their gathering birds and beautiful fall scenery. Georgina has a variety of accommodations to suit every pocketbook, with friendly country inns, resorts, B&Bs, motels and cabins. Open Water Bass: This season starts the fourth Saturday in June and is the last species to become fair game on Lake Simcoe. Recognized as one of Canada’s finest smallmouth bass fisheries this lake has the real potential to provide anglers with their Personal Best smallmouth ever. Many report that Georgina’s southeast portion of the lake is home to many of these monster smallmouths. Simcoe is home to the record for the five heaviest bass ever weighed in during a Canadian bass tournament. Those fish weighed a whopping 31.5 pounds caught and in the same event an 8.05 lb smallie was also caught. Tournament anglers from across North America know the bass here are huge but thousands of recreational anglers have also heard about the record sized smallmouth Simcoe has to offer. Although the weedier sections of the lake provide good largemouth fishing, smallmouth prefer rocky shorelines, points, drop-offs and around any one of Simcoe’s productive islands. Georgina Island is a top producer. Rapala X Raps and the new Shadow Raps are great smallmouth baits here, especially when there’s some chop on the water. Try the X Rap in water less than 15 feet when bass are off bottom and the Shadow Rap when they’re closer to bottom. When conditions are calm or bass are inactive, try casting a Trigger X Flutter Worm rigged wacky style or a drop shot rig for one of Simcoe’s legendary smallmouth. This lake has become a true world-class trophy smallmouth destination thanks in no small part to the majority of anglers who voluntarily live release most or all of their catch, especially larger fish over 2 or 3 pounds. A great place to access the lake in York Region for smallmouth is Sibbald Point Provincial. Here families from across the Region and beyond come not only to fish but to boat, picnic, camp, swim or just sunbathe on the clean sandy beach. In 2015, this park will once again host the popular “Learn to Fish” program and is great for newcomers to the sport. Perch: Yellow perch are found just about everywhere and we have both good eaters in the 8-11 inch range and plenty of those true jumbos (some topping two pounds) that has put Simcoe on the bucket list of so many perch fanatics. There are many excellent areas for perch, from Cook’s Bay out of Keswick in the south all the way up to Atherly Narrows in the north. Georgina’s shores out from the villages of Virginia, Willow Beach, Pefferlaw, Keswick and Port Bolster however are tough to beat. Launching your boat from Jackson’s Point at Bonnie Boats or from Sibbald Point Provincial Park will put you in the heart of some great perch waters. Later in the year, launching closer to Pefferlaw – like at Quinn’s Marina on the south side of Hwy 48 will get you to the mouth and big fall perch in no time. Finding one or two perch usually means you have found a school so don’t become discouraged if you don’t get bit right away. Casting a search spoon such as a small Blue Fox Minnow Spin is a great way to locate a school of perch. Or, try a slow troll for perch with a mid-sized original floating Rapala. After you connect with one fish, throw a marker buoy to the spot where the perch hit and proceed to cast to that area with jigs or even a modified drop-shot rig. Instead of the weight on bottom, I’ll often use a Lil Foxee jig, and above that on the hook I’ll add a soft, lifelike, Trigger X minnow or if they’re really finicky- their new Probe Worm. Many perch experts on Simcoe are forgoing the use of live minnows in favor of productive artificials like these. In the fall, large flotillas of boats can often be seen out from the Pefferlaw River and these are filled with anglers having a blast fishing Simcoe’s famous jumbo perch. Our perch are extremely plentiful, but in order to sustain a true trophy perch fishery, we ask anglers to release those precious perch over 12 inches. This way we can all do our part to conserve this great fishery for future generations. Big Spring Opener! Not many lakes in Ontario have three Big Time species all opening on the same day but that is certainly the case for Lake Simcoe. Northern pike, lake trout and whitefish all open on the 2nd Saturday in May. The more elusive yet trophy sized walleye opens then too, but they are more of an incidental catch. And in 2015, for the first time since 2002, a spring cisco (lake herring) fishery will open on the 2nd Saturday in May as well. Pike: The shallow, weedy areas in York Region’s Cooks Bay likely hold more pike than the rest of the lake combined! It’s here that the Aurora

Bassmasters club hold their annual Spring Open Pike tournament out of Keswick’s popular Boston Pizza plaza. Productive pike techniques include trolling or casting large Blue Fox Spinners along weedlines and Rapala X Raps overtop weedbeds. When pike are inactive make long casts with jigs and soft plastics or try some of the Storm swimbaits near the aquatic plants that pike love. Lakers and Whities: After the opener boats gather out from the Willow Beach and Jacksons Point area for big specimens of either fish that hang around until mid-late June. Their season closes Sept 30th and reopens Jan 1 for ice fishing. Various jigging spoons produce but the Blue Fox Moresilda spoon jigged vertically below the boat in 60-75 feet of water comes highly recommended. The Lil Foxee Jigging Minnow worked right on bottom is great for whitefish. With more whitefish now feeding on gobies however, be sure to try the Storm Goby swim bait and work it with little twitches right on bottom. This will mimic the goby behaviour and should pay big dividends. For deepwater whitie or laker fishing, you are fishing blind if you don’t use a high quality sonar to look for the right depth, baitfish and the big fish you’re after. Visitors and residents alike will want to insert the latest Navionics Canada Gold 2XG chip into their sonar’s that will give a complete digital map of Lake Simcoe showing depth contours, shoals and other likely fishing spots. With Lowrance’s built in GPS, you can also save your Simcoe hot spots and revisit them easily to help increase your odds. WINter FISHING: If you enjoyed fishing Simcoe during the open water season, then we welcome you back with open arms to try the great sport of ice fishing here. With several ice hut operators in Georgina it makes it easy for families and others to try this great winter sport. For active, hard core ice anglers, the quality and quantity of fish available, brings them back year after year.

MNRF stocks 50,000 lake trout and ~140,000 whitefish into the lake each year and there is evidence of natural reproduction for both as well. Yellow perch are still the most sought after species during the hard water season on Simcoe, simply because of the quality and quantity of perch here. In 2015, the highly acclaimed “Perchin for MS” derby out of Sibbald’s Point attracted 450 anglers and the winners had over 10 pounds for their heaviest 10 perch. Whether you are one of the thousands of visiting anglers or a local Georgina resident, you need go no further than out from the shores of one of our lakeside communities, for some tasty Lake Simcoe fish caught through the ice. One of the jewels within the Town of Georgina is Sibbald Point Provincial Park. With 582 campsites and a 400-metre stretch of sandy beach on Lake Simcoe, Sibbald Point is one of Ontario’s busiest provincial parks. If you are looking to relax in the shade, worship the sun, launch a boat, have a barbecue or enjoy a campfire, please come in and see us. Don’t like crowds? Try spending a day in the park through the week and you will be pleasantly surprised! The park opens the second Friday in May every year and closes on Thanksgiving Monday. Day use opportunities are available between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. The original 500-acre lakeside estate was home to Susan Mein Sibbald, born in Cornwall, England in 1783. She came to Canada in 1836 and purchased the property for her sons to pursue a career in farming. Her estate home (1836) located in the park is now the Eildon Hall Museum and houses a collection of original art, artifacts and furnishings. The museum is open throughout July and August at scheduled times. Also, be sure to visit St. George’s Anglican Church (1877) located next to the park boundary, as famous Canadian author Stephen B. Leacock is buried in its heritage cemetery. The park also offers weekly educational programs such as pond studies, guided natural and cultural hikes, children’s crafts, museum tours and pioneer games and programs. There are also evening programs where movies are shown at the outdoor theatre, focusing on culture, natural resources and protection of the environment. upon your arrival. A new campground developed in 2001 can accommodate trailers up to 35 feet in length. With its 50/30/15 amp electrical hook-ups and new shower building, it is becoming quite popular with park visitors. The streets of the main uptown Keswick area get closed off to traffic and opened up to the public for its two feature festival attractions. Music in the Streets offers free live entertainment throughout the day in June, including students from Connors Music, local bands, choirs and theatre groups. And the merchants of the main shopping district host a fall family fun day in September for the Uptown Keswick Harvest Festival featuring a vendors market, barbecues and lots of activities for the kids. The Sutton BIA hosts four events with free horse-drawn wagon rides at all events (weather permitting). A Spring Fling kicks off an exciting roster of events in May with a community garage sale in the Market Square. And a sea of yellow rubber duckys floating down the Black River heralds the arrival of one of Sutton’s main attractions — the Festival on High and duck race. The family friendly event includes children’s games, face painting, live music and vendors. A Hallowe’en Haunt in October encourages everyone to dress up in costume for plenty of games and prizes in the Market Square, which is also home to the annual Christmas tree lighting Dec. 5 featuring free hot chocolate and fireside carolling before the annual Christmas Parade of Lights, which runs from Jackson’s Point to Sutton. Jackson’s Point’s downtown parkette is the picturesque park setting for a number of great events taking place such as summer concerts and sales and culminating in a year-end songfest wrapped around a Menorah and Christmas tree lighting at the end of the year. But the feature event is the annual Painted Perch Festival — an afternoon and evening of fun and excitement for the whole family. The kids can enjoy games, crafts and face painting and there is always plenty of live music featuring lots of local talent. Don’t forget to check out all of the wonderful handcrafted perch and vote for your favourite. There is also be an array of vendors, artisans and some great food and drinks to enjoy. The large BIA membership is dedicated to preserving and maintaining the local flavour of each of Georgina’s historic community downtown’s while being united in a common goal of restoring, enhancing and beatifying each local downtown core to share with heartfelt hospitality with residents and visitors alike.

Georgina Pioneer Village

& Archives

Explore Georgina’s rich history and the people and places of its past with a visit to the Pioneer Village & Archives. Officially opened on Thanksgiving Day 1975 by Chief of the Chippewas of Georgina Island, Lorenzo Big Canoe, the Georgina Pioneer Village & Archives is a veritable heritage showcase. Located near the south shore of beautiful Lake Simcoe, this 10-acre site is home to numerous buildings that interpret the history of Georgina between 1850 and 1920, including a one-room schoolhouse, a general store, a train station, a blacksmith shop, an apothecary and a backwoods log house. The Pioneer Village also houses an extensive archival collection comprised of records created by the councils of the former townships of Georgina and North Gwillimbury, as well as the Village of Sutton. In addition, the Archives contain a number of personal family documents, including land records, photographs, scrapbooks, bibles and related ephemera. Heritage camps, tours, workshops and school visits are just some of the activities that take place throughout the season. The Village also hosts a number of popular special events, including Rise to Rebellion: An Interactive Re-creation of the 1837 Rebellion for Grade 7 students in May; Canada Day celebrations in true 19th-centry style July 1; and a Harvest Festival in September celebrating the arrival of autumn with a display of vintage farm equipment, plenty of food, children’s crafts, music, apple cider and historical demonstrations. And the holiday season truly takes on magical proportions when you step back in time with the sights, sounds and smells of an early settler Christmas during the Village’s Old Fashioned Christmas in November.

The Pioneer Village is open by donation only from Wednesday to Sunday, including holidays, from the first weekend of June to the last weekend of August from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission applies to special events. This year’s 160th Sutton Fair & Horse Show promises to be another big year for the Sutton Agricultural Society. A stellar list of events includes something for everyone in the family. But the fair hasn’t lost touch with its long-standing roots and tradition that make this a true country fair. From its humble beginnings as a one-day event in 1855 to its current four-day action-packed schedule, the Sutton Fair combines the best of both the entertainment and agricultural worlds. This year’s theme is “100 Years of 4H Ontario”. Decorations and activities during the four days of the fair will embrace and celebrate the venerable 4H experience. Organizers are also excited and thrilled to feature a second pavilion on the property built in 2013 to add another venue for the entertainment and animal shows. Many competitions and contests will “rev up” the excitement more than ever before featuring monster truck rides on General Hazzard. And once the smoke clears and the roar of the grandstand settles from the popular truck and tractor “pulls”, as well as the Thrill Show demolition derbies, there’s still plenty to tempt the thrill seeker on the World’s Finest Midway. view the leisure exhibits and take in some of the special events and you’ll enjoy the perfect family outing. A large entertainment tent features daily acts and a host of exhibitors present their wares in the arena for the duration of the fair. The Stephen Leacock Theatre of Performing Arts continues to capture the imagination with live theatre like you’ve never seen it. Opened in 1985, performances on its stage have been igniting the imagination and tickling the fancy ever since. You wouldn’t normally pitch a tent at the world-famous Briars Resort in Jackson’s Point, but some elegant white ones gracing the resort’s lush lawns in July signify a one-of-a-kind art experience. Exciting new and perennial favourite artists and return for the 14th annual Purple Turtle Art Festival July 11th and 12th. Georgina

Georgina, considered one town, actually consists of numerous lakeside communities and hamlets including Keswick, Orchard Beach, Roches Point, Island Grove, Willow Beach, Franklin Beach, Jackson’s Point, Sutton, Baldwin, Brown Hill, Udora, Port Bolster, Pefferlaw, Virginia, Egypt, Vachell, Cedarbrae, and Duclos Point. Named by Governor John Graves Simcoe in honour of King George III, the area was surveyed in 1817 and settlement began in earnest in 1819. The first patents were issued to Captain William Bourchier, R.N., who, in 1839, built his regency home known as the “Briars.” Drawn by good agricultural land, a scenic pine-forested shoreline and close proximity to York (now Toronto), Georgina soon became home to numerous settlers, many of whom have family names that are still prominent in the town. The Georgina Historical Village at the Civic Centre welcomes visitors of all ages to learn more about their heritage. KESWICK Keswick, the largest of Georgina’s urban communities, offers an attractive combination of urban services and rural charm. It is also home to the Town’s Civic Centre located on Civic Centre Road, 2 km east of Woodbine Avenue and north of Baseline Road. The community has been the site of extensive development recently with a resultant doubling of the population over the past decade and a forecasted doubling again in the next 15-20 years which will see a population of approximately 71,000. Keswick is home to some of Georgina’s largest employers such as Kesmac Inc., grower of sod and manufacturer of sod farming equipment; J.C. Trailers, manufacturer of specialty trailers for both domestic and overseas markets; and Krate’s Marina, a full service marina (See page 7 for a full list of services). HIStOrIc SIteS One of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the area is the Anglican Church in Roches Point, which was built in 1863. The Rev. Walter Stennet M.A., retired principal of Upper Canada College, designed the building in a primitive Gothic style reminiscent of an English country church and did most of the labour in building it. The graveyard, so lovingly kept, is full of historic interest as it contains the remains of many of the early settlers. accOmmODatION Lake Drive North has several beautiful bed and breakfast establishments and motels, all with a lake view. The rest of the plaza includes pet supplies, restaurant, hair stylist, veterinarian, dentist, and Staples. • Arlington Shopping Plaza – Woodbine Avenue and Arlington; a plaza featuring the LCBO, pharmacy, medical centre, food and other retail outlets. • Additionally, the whole of The Queensway South from the southerly limits of Keswick to Church Street in the north, consists of retail and commercial outlets, fast food establishments and residential areas. tHe artS The Stephen Leacock Theatre at 130 Gwendolyn Blvd. has an active schedule of local, national and international entertainment and is also home to the Queensville Players, a local amateur theatre group specializing in musicals. eNtertaINmeNt There are a number of pubs/restaurants in Keswick all offering various forms of entertainment. Dancing is usually available. Current movies are screened every day at The Gem Theatre. SPOrtS Whether you’re boating, fishing or sailboarding, Keswick boasts several marinas situated from the south end of town on Cook’s Bay northward to Island Grove on the south shore of Lake Simcoe. Each offers such services as slip rentals, boat and fishing gear rentals, boat launching, and sales and service of all sizes of pleasure craft. Canadian Tire in Keswick now offers live bait and allows prospective anglers and hunters to get their appropriate licenses. Georgina’s new Recreation Outdoor Campus (The ROC), which combines high-quality sports and adventure activities, in an ultimate outdoor playground, is open all year. Golfers have an excellent full-service, nine-hole golf course available at Orchard Beach. Public swimming is available at Clarendon Beach Park, which also has playgrounds and picnic facilities. During the winter, the local marinas offer ice fishing supplies and, of course, full snowmobiling services. Ice

sailing on the lake is very popular for those who have their own equipment. For spectators, the local twin pad arena, the Georgina Ice Palace on Woodbine Ave., features figure skating and hockey from the youngest up to and including the Junior C team known as the “ICE”. JACKSON’S POINT HIStOrIc SIteS The waters off Jackson’s Point are ideal for divers who wish to explore history. Here lie remnants of the pre-war Metropolitan Radial Railway (formally Grand Trunk Rail) which brought hundreds of tourists from the noise of the city through quiet fields to the placid cool waters of Lake Simcoe at Jackson’s Point. Further east along Hedge Road at the entrance to Sibbald Point Provincial Park can be found St. George’s Church and the burial site of one of Canada’s foremost authors – Stephen Butler Leacock. Although he won worldwide acclaim with extensive writings on political science, economics and history, he is best known for his “Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town,” “Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich” and “Literary Lapses,” the first works to be essentially Canadian in character and spirit. Buried in the same church yard is Mazo de la Roche, author of “Jalna.” The church, as it is today, was built in 1877 in memory of Susan Sibbald by her sons (she had nine). A little wooden church had been built there earlier by the settlers. The altar and hymn board are of oak and were carved and presented by the Rev. George Everest. The beautiful west window is dedicated to the memory of three airmen killed in the First and Second World Wars. The woodwork in the church is oak, pine, black walnut and butternut. The bible on the prayer desk was presented to the church in 1841. The Holy Communion Service dates from 1841 as well. Sibbald Point Provincial Park is one of southern Ontario’s most popular parks, drawing thousands of pleasure seekers each year for summer camping, picnicking, swimming and boating, and for winter activities such as cross country skiing and ice fishing. It is located north of Hwy. 48 on Park Road. Just inside the provincial park stands Eildon Hall, a memorial museum which was the home of Lieutenant-Colonel Wm. Sibbald and his wife, Susan. Perhaps the most historic building in the area is

The Briars. Originally built in 1840 by Cpt. William Bourchier, R.N., Frank Sibbald, eighth son to Susan and William Sibbald, added extensively to it. It was transformed into a resort by his great nephew, Jack Sibbald after W.W.I and into an inn in 1977 by his son John and his wife Barbara Sibbald, who with sons Hugh and Andrew, operate it today. It is recognized as one of the premier destination points for business and pleasure in Southern Ontario.

HIStOrIc SIteS The Manor House in Sutton and the Briars in Jackson’s Point, both built by the Bourchier family, are now heritage sites. Additional historical sites of interest include St. James Anglican Church — 1856, the Holborn Home known as “Maple Hurst” on River Street, Dr. Noble’s Home at the Pioneer Village and the Georgina Island Reserve.

SHOPPING High Street and Dalton Road make up the shopping district for Sutton. Much of this retail and commercial area features smaller specialty stores and services.

SHOPPING The Lake Drive and Dalton Road intersection has a number of stores offering gifts, food, pharmaceuticals and refreshments and is within walking distance to the Jackson’s Point Harbour. Farther south on Dalton Road are two major food stores, a flower shop, two pharmacies, a building supply outlet, hardware store, Giant Tiger and many restaurants. The Jackson’s Point BIA is continually making the area better for shoppers. Make sure you stop by to see the latest improvements! eNtertaINmeNt Dinner and dancing are available at The Briars Resort on Hedge Road every Saturday evening. The Lake Simcoe Arms British Pub extends a warm welcome with a variety of pub favourites and other popular dishes and offers live music year-round, and on the patio during summer months. If you’re in the mood for fine dining, Jackson’s Place has you covered. SPOrtS Jackson’s Point has a transient public harbour to serve the boating public. The area is excellent for all types of boats and personal watercraft. It also has a private marina offering full services to boaters and fishing enthusiasts both during the summer and the winter. De La Salle Park, Franklin Beach Conservation Park and Willow Beach Conservation Area are operated by the Town of Georgina. They offer excellent swimming with picnic facilities and parking. Golfers have a choice of two nine-hole courses, one right near De La Salle Park and the other at Willow Beach, a short distance west. The latter also offers a driving range and a mini putt course. SUTTON Captain William Bourchier, R.N., a Scotsman, returned from the navy after the War of 1812 and took up grants of land with his younger brother, James, in what is now Sutton. They pronounced their name “Bowxher”. Eventually, they were to become responsible for the development of Bourchier’s Mill, later Sutton.The village has developed to the point where it now runs into Jackson’s Point to the north and the hamlet of Virginia to the east. Virginia Beach has both a ferry and a float boat service to the Georgina Island Reserve. The Beach is accessible either from Hwy. 48 and Virginia Beach Road at Virginia or via Black River Road from Sutton.

eNtertaINmeNt Pubs/restaurants on High St and Dalton Rd offer entertainment and dancing for the young at heart. The Sutton Fair and Horse Show, August 6 to 9, is one of the oldest fairs in Ontario presenting its 160th edition this year. The Fair offers something for everyone, regardless of age. SPOrtS Sutton is blessed with a large fair grounds, a curling arena, the Sutton Arena, an indoor swimming pool and extensive playing areas for tennis, baseball and soccer. Be it summer or winter, there is always plenty to do. The proximity to Lake Simcoe, of course, opens up all the usual activities of swimming, boating and fishing in the summer and snowmobiling and ice fishing in the winter. BALDWIN Located south of Sutton and just east of Keswick, the tiny hamlet of Baldwin is home to many hobby farms and equestrian centres. The main landmark in Baldwin has always been the grist mill on the Black River. The first mill was built in the early 1800s, but both it and its replacement burned down. The current structure was brought from Keswick piece by piece and began operation in 1883. Many of the area’s original wood and cobblestorne structures are still standing. Most of the area’s small businesses and amenities are accessible off the main Hwy. 48 artery north of Ravenshoe Road and south of High Street. The main commercial sector is located at the Baldwin Plaza on the east side of Hwy. 48, which includes a coffee shop, horse equipment and saddle retailer, bait and tackle shop, custom signs, art gallery, restaurant and motel. Baldwin is also home to the Baldwin Airport, which offers skydiving through the Parachute School of Toronto Limited; Blue Willow’s Garden Centre; the Baldwin Conservation Area; Lyndhurst Golf Course, a public, 18-hole golf facility; a 10+ pump self-serve gas station and convenience store; and numerous antique retailers. PEFFERLAW Although the village of Pefferlaw is concentrated to the south of Hwy. 48 along the Pefferlaw River, the area of Pefferlaw extends from Virginia to Port Bolster and includes Duclos Point, McRae Beach, Morning Glory and Holmes Point. The village owes its founding to the river flowing through it which bears its name. The Pefferlaw River afforded an excellent site for a mill and, circa 1830, Captain Wm. Johnson, R.N. retired, built a sawmill, grist mill and woollen mill after similar efforts in Baldwin had failed.

HIStOrIc SIteS The site of the old mill is now a lovely park to be enjoyed by all. SHOPPING The village has a downtown section offering groceries, refreshments, banking services, restaurants, a library, gas station, automotive repair and personal services. SPOrtS The extended area of Pefferlaw includes a great deal of Lake Simcoe shoreline and, as such, offers the usual summer and winter sports of fishing, swimming, boating, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Much of the area is taken up with private cottages, but Holmes Point is an exception with both a public beach and a private, commercial beach. The latter is situated at the mouth of the Pefferlaw River and includes a motel, a restaurant and docking facilities for boats. Another hidden treasure in Pefferlaw is Eaglewood — 90 acres of “wilderness” with hiking, skating, cross country skiing, group camping, day visits, horseback riding, fishing, housekeeping accommodation, common room and much more. Eaglewood is a community oriented family resort that is fully wheelchair accessible. The Pines of Georgina Golf Course on Hwy. 48 is a competitive, 18-hole course complete with all club facilities, a lounge and a restaurant. PORT BOLSTER The hamlet of Port Bolster is often considered an extension of Pefferlaw and offers the visitor much of the same services. Its main street is Durham Road 23 (also known as Lake Ridge Road). The Port Bolster area is very popular for its fishing, both in summer and winter. UDORA The hamlet of Udora is located in the southeast of Georgina and borders the Region of Durham. Like Pefferlaw, it too is situated on The Pefferlaw River which is the focal point for a large private camp, in effect a subdivision of cottages, owned by the Estonian Summer Homes Association.
