Pickering College Pickering College, Canada’s only Quaker-founded school, is a unique place. Founded in 1842, today we are a non-denominational co-educational day and boarding school where students, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, develop the social conscience, confidence, knowledge and skills to shape the future. The influence of the Quaker guiding values is immense. In today’s increasingly complex world our school values (compassion, community, integrity, respect and responsibility) are at the very core of our vision to develop values-based leaders who are determined to make their world a better place. The role of Quakerism at Pickering College is a unique and defining aspect of our school. Retaining a close relationship with our Quaker heritage provides a philosophical, moral and operational framework for our planning and decision-making.

Kaze Japanese Cuisine Many of us in the GTA know that great sushi can usually be found in Markham; however without a hesitation you can head to Kaze Sushi in Richmond Hill for the best quality sushi that is close to home. Located on Elgin Mills road between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street, Kaze Sushi offers a wide variety of sushi and other Asian delicacies for a modest price. If you’re looking for a new twist on an old classic, Kaze’s sushi would be right up your alley, as they offer things like the Kaze roll with 3 kinds of fish not typical in sushi. Kaze Sushi has many sushi alternatives for you to enjoy if you’re not much of a sushi fan. In particular, popcorn chicken and beef teriyaki are just a couple of dishes you can order in lieu of sushi. Reviews claim that Kaze Sushi’s selection of sashimi is what keeps people coming back. You can get it with a fish like salmon or tilapia, which is an uncommon fish to use, or in a sushi roll. The best part though, is that Kaze Sushi is a buffet. For as little as 14.99 for lunch and 23.99 for dinner on weekends, you can eat everything Kaze Sushi has to offer – provided you have enough room in your stomach!

The Village Grocer You really can’t say you’ve been to Unionville without also saying that you’ve experienced The Village Grocer. Every community has its heart, and The Village Grocer has been that for this community since 1986. Founded and developed by Evan MacDonald and his wife, Cathy, The Grocer moved two years ago to a beautiful and more spacious location on 16th Avenue near Kennedy Road. What sets The Village Grocer apart from other food businesses are the countless homemade items which keep people coming back again and again. Many of VG’s ‘regulars’ pop in almost daily! There’s always something new and amazing because specialties are made fresh on location everyday, in the traditional hands-on way. The café serves locally roasted coffee and superb espresso-based beverages throughout the day. At lunchtime they offer up unique sandwiches and wraps (try the roast beef with caramelized onions and roasted peppers), fresh salads, soup, and hot dishes, too. The deli offers up a wide variety of quality cold meats from around the globe, but the most popular items are those that are made right on the premises (think succulent hams, slowroasted turkey breast, coils of kolbassa…) The Village Grocer started as a butcher shop, and meat is still the soul of the business. The VG point of view is “quality first”: amazing marbled beef, old-fashioned air-chilled chicken, delectable home-made sausages, unique dry-cured bacon, old-fashion maple sugar hams, the freshest fish, and Evan’s original warm-smoked salmon. For a wonderful (and effortless!) dinner, take home one of VG’s many prepared entrees, such as grilled teriyaki salmon, Cajun shrimp skewers, and hot or mild chili chicken.

Village Grocer’s bakery is also quite famous in the Markham community! Each and every mouth-watering sweet is handmade daily to ensure the highest quality and freshness. No shortcuts! Oozy butter tarts, authentic lemon meringue pies, and voluptuous chocolate ganache cakes are just three of the most popular desserts on offer. The Village Grocer’s website and Facebook page have great recipes, as well, if you want to create something new at home. Open 7 days a week, The Village Grocer welcomes you with open arms and friendly smiles, so come on in and experience a beautiful twist on grocery shopping!

Willow Springs Winery MINUTES AWAY…MILES FROM ORDINARY Willow Springs’ traditions originated in 16th century Italy, where the Testa family began their wine-making practices. These techniques have been passed on for generations and Willow Springs Winery proudly shares their unique Italian recipe in each of its award-winning Ontario wines. Situated atop the Oak Ridges Moraine, Willow Springs Winery is complemented by its spring-fed ponds, historic willow trees and a friendly, inviting atmosphere that is both beautiful and serene. The unique tasting experience at Willow Springs Winery is a result of the exceptional care that goes into each grape, hand-harvested before its inclusion into their award-winning wines. The wines themselves are crafted with passion, and along with recognition from the Vintner’s Quality Alliance of Canada, have garnered Gold Medals from both the Ontario Grape Growers Association and the Royal Wine Competition. Their red and white wines offer an exquisite variety of flavours, lingering aromas and rich layers, making them the quintessential choice for any occasion. Their 2011 Vidal Icewine, harvested under the moonlight, captured Gold at this year’s Royal Wine Competition. Alongside the Pinot Noir Gold Award received from the Grape Grower’s Association in June, 2013 has officially become a Double-Gold Medal Winning Year for Willow Springs Winery. 5572 Bethesda Road, Stouffville (905) 642-9463 www.willowspringswinery.ca info@willowspringswinery.ca

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE PRODUCT? Our signature is undoubtedly our Rodizio service. This the concept behind any true Brazilian Steakhouse restaurant, and features and unlimited supply of up to 15 cuts of meat, a variety of beef, chicken, lamb and pork which are all cooked over an open flame charcoal grill. Along with the meats, Rodizio meals also include starting bites plus over 40 warm and cold side dishes on our appetizer island. Reduced rates apply for children and vegetarians. HOW DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS? The idea for Touro spawned from Michael Colangelo, its Managing Director. Michael frequented Brazilian Steakhouses during years of travelling throughout South America. Upon his return to Toronto, he noticed that there was a large market for an upscale Brazilian Steakhouse, and no other restaurants catering to this market. PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO KNOW: People are always surprised to find out that we also offer an a la carte menu, most likely because we are the only Brazilian Steakhouse to do so. It also surprises many of our guests to hear about our unique Enomatic wine dispensers. We are the only restaurant in Ontario to offer this concept; automated machines which enable guests pour themselves a 1, 3 or 6 ounce glass from a 24 bottle selection.
OUR CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY: Each month, Touro supports a different charity. We include features such as a drink and dessert of which we donate half the proceeds to said charity, and we also hold a fundraising dinner event one night during the month. This October, we have supported the Breast Cancer Society for Canada. DON’T LEAVE OUR BUSINESS WITHOUT TRYING: The Caipirinha! The signature drink of Brazil, made with muddled limes, sugar and Leblon cachaca, a Brazilian specialty rum. For guests dining Rodizio, our Picanha is the house specialty steak and is a must try, as well for guests dining a la carte, our Touro Trio offers 3 sliders each with a different barbecued meat, which offers a taste of everything! OUR MOST POPULAR REQUESTS ARE: Large group bookings and corporate events. Due to the versatility of a Rodizio meal to suit all dietary preferences, we have many inquiries for large group bookings. Contact us today for info and how to tailor a package exactly to your group’s needs!
