WELCOME TO THE 161ST ✪
S TTON FAIR & HORSE SHOW President’s Message
W
elcome friends, family and community members to the 161st Sutton Fair and Horse Show. The fair board members have worked hard to bring a variety of entertainment to our event this year that will be sure to please everyone. New to the fair this year is Aqua Dogs! You will see a variety of dog breeds jumping for distance into a 40 foot pool, performing daily starting on Friday. This years’ fair theme is “a touch of country”, which is perfect because even after all these years the Sutton Fair still has its country traditions with our ever expanding livestock shows and displays, and if that’s not country enough for you we have added a combine harvester class to our demolition derby. Be sure to check out the exhibits in the Kin Hall and arena which are full of arts, crafts, and culinary displays or if you’re up to the challenge enter something you created of your own. I am extremely proud to be part of this organization and want to thank all of the members, volunteers and sponsors for the countless hours of dedication. Without these people the Sutton Fair and Horse Show would simply not be possible. Come out on August 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th you won’t be disappointed. I hope to see everyone there!! elcome to the 161st Sutton Fair and Horse Show! This years’ theme, A Touch of Country. My name is Jennifer McCabe and it has been my pleasure to represent our agricultural society as the 2015-2016 Sutton Fair Senior Ambassador. Following the fair I will be attending the Canadian National Exhibition as I compete for the title of Ambassador of the Fairs. Volunteers along with their committees have been working hard over the last twelve months to prepare for the fair. This year’s highlights; combine derby, Jayme Lynn Reed, Circus Jonathan and so much more! Lets be on our way to enjoy the sun, cheer in the stands and celebrate the 161st Sutton Fair and Horse Show! elcome to the 161 st Sutton Fair & Horse Show. I would like to invite you all to come to the fair this summer to see the horses, dairy cows, the car derbies, the midway and so much more. I have had tons of fun being the junior ambassador this past year. I was able to do many things. I was involved in the Terry Fox Run\walk, the harvest festival and the Santa Claus and the Remembrance Day parades But my most memorable memories of the fair was meeting all the community and talking to all the children. So please come out to the fair, meet your neighbours and make new friends. Brooklyn Foster 2016 Junior Ambassador
Thanks, Brooklyn Foster! All our dreams can come true - if we have the courage to pursue them! (Walt Disney)

161ST S TTON FAIR & HORSE SHOW August 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 2016
Welcome to the 161ST Sutton Fair & Horse Show This year’s 161st Sutton Fair & Horse Show promises to be another big year for the Sutton Agricultural Society. A stellar list of events includes something for everyone in the family. Packed full with modern entertainment features, one of the longest-running fairs in the province, however, hasn’t lost touch with its long-standing roots and traditions that make it a true country fair. From its humble beginnings as a one-day event in 1855 to its current four-day actionpacked schedule, the Sutton Fair combines the best of both the entertainment and agricultural worlds. This year’s theme is “A Touch of Country“. There are horse and livestock shows to see, craft exhibits to view and numerous competitions to showcase artistic and creative talents. In addition, you can take a ride or two, sample some food, view the leisure exhibits and take in some of the special events that make the fair a perfect family outing. Many competitions and contests will “rev up” the excitement more than ever before, but the popular demolition derbies and tractor pulls return once again as huge fan favourites.
Once the smoke clears and the roar of the grandstand settles, there’s still plenty to tempt the thrill seeker on the World’s Finest Midway and a spectacular display of canine ability and sportsmanship in the Aqua Dogs Show, new to the fair this year. A large entertainment pavilion features daily acts and a host of exhibitors present their wares in the arena for the duration of the fair. Whether young or old there are prizes to be won at the Fair! Enter your home craft items for a chance to showcase your talents and maybe win a ribbon. Kids can also get in on the action with a special Kid’s Corner section for their homemade masterpieces. Kids can look forward to a children’s fun area, a mini-barn, petting zoo, and packed entertainment roster to keep them wideeyed and amused all day and all night. With so much to offer, free parking and reasonable entrance fees, it’s worth the trip to the Sutton Fair for its small-town charm and big-ticket entertainment for the entire family. Visit www.suttonfair.com for more information, a complete list of daily events, admission fees, directions, hours of operation and to view the 2016 Sutton Fair Prize Book.

RCMP MUSICAL RIDE ✪
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride will be performing at the Sutton Fair Grounds on Sunday, Sept. 11. One of Canada’s most recognized icons, the RCMP Musical Ride represents a colourful Canadian tradition. The troop of 32 horses and riders will perform a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music. Developed in 1876 by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding ability and entertain the local community, it has evolved over the decades into a uniquely Canadian performance enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators every year. Members of the Musical Ride are first and foremost police officers. They all have at least two years of experience in active police work before volunteering for duty with the Musical Ride. Working through a unique medium, they support the RCMP community policing efforts throughout Canada. Tickets for the year’s show at the Sutton Fair Grounds — which includes a pre-show at 1 p.m. followed by the ride at 2 p.m. and a
meet and greet at 3 p.m. complete with photo opportunity — are $5.00 each. Children age 5 and under are admitted free. Tickets will be available July 1st at The Sutton General Store on High St. in Sutton. The ticket price includes parking that will be available from entry at the corner of Snooks Road and Fairpark Lane. HISTORY OF THE FAIR ✪
161 years ago Sutton was a thriving town, joining the two boundaries of North Gwillimbury and Georgina, making it the perfect location for the annual one-day October Fair. By 1857 the Fair had increased to a two-day annual event, capped off each day by a 25 cent dinner at Sheppard’s Hotel in Sutton, where the Fair President presided over speeches, toasts and the reading of lists of winners from the daily competitions. Holding the two-day faire the second week of October always ran the risk of bad weather, compelling the Union Agricultural Society of Georgina and North Gwillimbury Directors (known by 1908 to present day as the Sutton Agricultural Society) to change the dates to each September 24 and 25, at the 1889 Annual Meeting. As we enter the 161st Anniversary year of the Sutton Fair and Horse Show in August 2016, we should reflect on the hard work and dedication that the volunteers of the Sutton Agricultural Society have shown. Without the valiant efforts

of these outstanding volunteers of the Society, and contributing community sponsors, we would not be able to enjoy the rich tradition of the Sutton Fair and Horse Show today. Many have walked the very same grounds we walk today. Generations of townspeople, rural neighbors and Summer Lake residents have visited the fair and enjoyed events with friends and family. The fair is not just about entertainment, it is a link to our agricultural heritage and our past, which built a strong town and country. There are very few opportunities that link the past with the present, such as the Sutton Fair and Horse Show. As we look to the future, we can’t help but look back, to see where we’ve been and to see where we’re going. As times have changed, so the fair has changed. If we’ve very lucky we’ll be able to continue the tradition for generations to come. Who knows, maybe in another 161 years, people living on Space Stations will come for a visit!

IMPACT MOTORSPORTS ✪ DEMOLITION DERBY
Canada’s #1 Demolition Derby Always a popular draw, the demolition derbies at the Sutton Fair & Horse Show are taking it up a notch this year with the addition of a combine demo derby. It may not be a big field in terms of numbers, but it will definitely be BIG in the ring with the big boys stepping up to the plate in their “souped up” combines. You can always count on organizers to rev up the entertainment value when it comes to one of the fair’s most popular attractions.
On top of the new addition, Impact Motor Sports will bring its renowned flair to the traditional demo cross on Friday followed by the actual figure 8 derby on Saturday featuring a number of different classes. Come early to get a good vantage spot and come prepared to be entertained because you can expect a packed show featuring talented feats of driving, plenty of action and the roar and smoke of one of the best demolition derby shows around.
