WELCOME TO THE 162 ND

SUTTON FAIR & HORSE SHOW President’s Message

O

n behalf of the Sutton Agricultural Society, I would like to welcome you to the 162nd Sutton Fair and Horse Show. This year’s theme is “150 Years of Canada”, and special classes have been added to this year’s homecraft sections. Be sure to check them out in the arena and Kin Hall or if you’re up to the challenge enter something of your own. This year’s entertainment lineup as always, is jam packed. The entertainment committee has worked diligently to ensure something for everyone of all ages. Whether it’s music, motorsports, or livestock and horse shows , you won’t be disappointed. The always popular “Zoo to You” and “Circus Jonathan “ are back and their showtimes have been extended. In closing, I want to thank the executive, members and volunteers for all their hardwork and dedication. Without this group of people the fair would not be possible, and because of these people the fair is as strong as ever and will continue to grow and be a large part of the community. I’m truly proud to be part of this organization. I hope to see everyone come out and enjoy everything this year’s fair has to offer!!

GREETINGS

I

can hardly believe that it is fair time again! On behalf of the Sutton Agricultural Society I would like to welcome you to the 162nd Sutton Fair and Horse Show. The past year has gone by so fast and I am sad to see it coming to an end. It seems like just yesterday I was crowned the 161st Sutton Fair Ambassador. As an ambassador, I have had so much fun and am filled with pride as I am able to represent our amazing community, fair and agricultural society.

Kessa Iddison 2016 Senior Ambassador

In being the Sutton Fair Ambassador, it has given me many opportunities to become involved and meet amazing people. I have had the pleasure of attending the OAAS meeting, the Sutton Santa Claus parade, the OAAS convention, the District 5 Competition and many more. Being involved in these events has made me feel both honoured and proud to come from a community with such love and compassion. I have learned so much from this journey and continue to learn and grow from every experience that comes my way. I look forward to representing everyone in the 2017 CNE Ambassador Competition. Sincerely, Kessa Iddison

I

t’s my favourite time of the year! Welcome to the 162nd Sutton Fair and Horse Show. You know what they say, “time flies when you’re having fun” and I sure have had nothing but great fun being your 2016/2017 Junior Ambassador. This past year I have represented the fair at various different events and celebrated exciting moments in our community. A few of my favourite events were the RCMP Musical Ride, dropping the puck to start the Georgina Ice season and seeing the smiling faces of all different ages from our float in the Sutton Santa parade.

Madelyn Grossi 2016 Junior Ambassador

While representing the Agricultural Society it’s amazing how much I have learned and how many wonderful people I got the chance to meet. At the OAAS meeting I learned so much about our fair and spent the day with amazing people. Over the past year I have experienced a whole other world of opportunities I would have never gotten too. I would like to thank the community and the Agricultural Society for making my year as Junior Ambassador a year to remember. Sincerely, Madelyn Grossi

SUTTON FAIR & HORSE SHOW August 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 2017

Welcome to the 162ND Sutton Fair & Horse Show

T

his year’s 162nd Sutton Fair & Horse Show promises to be another big year for the Sutton Agricultural Society. A stellar list of events includes something for everyone in the family. Packed full with modern entertainment features, one of the longest-running fairs in the province, however, hasn’t lost touch with its long-standing roots and traditions that make it a true country fair. From its humble beginnings as a one-day event in 1855 to its current four-day actionpacked schedule, the Sutton Fair combines the best of both the entertainment and agricultural worlds. This year’s theme is “150 Years of Canada“. There are horse and livestock shows to see, craft exhibits to view and numerous competitions to showcase artistic and creative talents. In addition, you can take a ride or two, sample some food, view the leisure exhibits and take in some of the special events that make the fair a perfect family outing. Many competitions and contests will “rev up” the excitement more than ever before, but the popular demolition derbies and tractor

pulls return once again as huge fan favourites. Once the smoke clears and the roar of the grandstand settles, there’s still plenty to tempt the thrill seeker on the World’s Finest Midway and a spectacular display of canine ability and sportsmanship in the Ruffsport Dog Show. A large entertainment pavilion features daily acts and a host of exhibitors present their wares in the arena for the duration of the fair. Whether young or old there are prizes to be won at the Fair! Enter your home craft items for a chance to showcase your talents and maybe win a ribbon. Kids can also get in on the action with a special Kid’s Corner section for their homemade masterpieces. Kids can look forward to a children’s fun area, a barn to explore, a petting zoo, and packed entertainment roster to keep them wide-eyed and amused all day and all night. With so much to offer, free parking and reasonable entrance fees, it’s worth the trip to the Sutton Fair for its small-town charm and bigticket entertainment for the entire family. Visit www.suttonfair.com for more information, a complete list of daily events, admission fees, directions, hours of operation and to view the 2017 Sutton Fair Prize Book.

HISTORY OF THE FAIR 162 years ago Sutton was a thriving town, joining the two boundaries of North Gwillimbury and Georgina, making it the perfect location for the annual one-day October Fair. By 1857 the Fair had increased to a two-day annual event, capped off each day by a 25 cent dinner at Sheppard’s Hotel in Sutton, where the Fair President presided over speeches, toasts and the reading of lists of winners from the daily competitions. Holding the two-day fair the second week of October always ran the risk of bad weather, compelling the Union Agricultural Society of Georgina and North Gwillimbury Directors (known by 1908 to present day as the Sutton Agricultural Society) to change the dates to each September 24 and 25, at the 1889 Annual Meeting. As we enter the 162nd Anniversary year of the Sutton Fair and Horse Show in August 2017, we should reflect on the hard work and dedication that the volunteers of the Sutton Agricultural Society have shown. Without the valiant efforts of these outstanding volunteers of the Society, and contributing community sponsors, we would not be able to enjoy the rich tradition of the Sutton Fair and Horse Show today. Many have walked the very same grounds we walk today. Generations of townspeople, rural neighbors and Summer Lake residents have visited the fair and enjoyed events with friends and family. The fair is not just about entertainment, it is a link to our agricultural heritage and our past, which built a strong town and country. There are very few opportunities that link the past with the present, such as the Sutton Fair and Horse Show. As we look to the future, we can’t help but look back, to see where we’ve been and to see where we’re going. As times have changed, so the fair has changed. If we’ve very lucky we’ll be able to continue the tradition for generations to come. Who knows, maybe in another 162 years, people living on Space Stations will come for a visit!

IMPACT MOTORSPORTS

DEMOLITION DERBY Canada’s #1 Demolition Derby Always a popular draw, the demolition derbies at the Sutton Fair & Horse Show are taking it up a notch this year with the addition of a farm combine demo derby. It may not be a big field in terms of numbers, but it will definitely be BIG in the ring with the big boys stepping up to the plate in their “souped up” combines. You can always count on organizers to rev up the entertainment value when it comes to one of the fair’s most popular attractions. On top of the new addition, Impact Motor Sports will bring its renowned flair to the traditional demo cross on Friday followed by the actual figure 8 derby, full size truck and STOCK mini smash on Saturday featuring a number of different classes. Come early to get a good vantage spot and come prepared to be entertained because you can expect a packed show featuring talented feats of driving, plenty of action and the roar and smoke of one of the best demolition derby shows around.

Enjoy
