Family-friendly winter activities M
any people may run indoors when the temperatures outside dip below freezing. But the truly adventurous see no reason why to cooped up indoors from a little cold weather.
Sledding: Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans down snowy hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing or sharing a sled with their youngsters. Snowshoeing: While snowshoeing can be physically demanding, it’s also a fun way for families that like family walks to continue those traditions even if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. Snowman building: The season’s first snowfall provides the perfect opportunity for parents and their children to start building some snowmen. Lifting snow is great strength training,
while pushing snow to form Frosty’s body is a great way to get in some cardiovascular exercise. Skiing and snowboarding: The earlier youngsters start skiing and/or snowboarding, the more likely such activities will prove second nature. Many resorts offer skiing and snowboarding lessons to kids and adults, so parents can book weekend getaways for the family. While it’s tempting to huddle up indoors when winter hits full swing, families who embrace the great outdoors can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the way.

Making the Most of Your Storage
F
inding storage solutions to organize a home can be a daunting task. These simple DIY tips will overhaul key areas in the home to give you a more efficient space from top to bottom. Closet Organization Use a closet kit that includes hanging rods, shelving and hardware for an easy DIY installation that will upgrade any walk-in or reach-in closet. Leverage vertical space for small closets by hanging double rods for shorter garments. Wire shelves are a good addition to hold clothing and other linens, allowing air to pass through so fabrics can breathe, and ultimately last longer. Laundry Solutions Associates at Home Depot recommend hanging a wall cabinet above your laundry machines to
store detergent and other products that need to be out of reach of children and pets. If you own a front load laundry pair, install work surfaces on top that include handy pockets to store your cleaning supplies. basement Storage Consider under-stair shelving to make use of an often-wasted space. Find furniture that serves dual purposes – like a bench for seating that also has room for storage inside. Clear totes can help you to organize and store items that aren’t in use, and make finding everything easy. Alternatively, opt for totes in colourful or textured versions that can add a punch of personality to open shelving. Courtesy of: www.newscanada.co

Japanese automakers turn heads in Detroit By Neil Moore • Metroland Media
N
AIAS kicked off early Monday with the 2016 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards. You might think it would be skewed towards the Detroit Three, but it was nothing of the sort with Honda Pilot, Nissan Titan and Volvo XC 90 as finalists for the truck award, and Mazda MX-5, Honda Civic and Chevy Malibu for the car. Nissan Design America took its finalist for North American Truck of the Year and made it even more badass. The Titan XD has gained three inches in height to accommodate four 37-inch high offroad tires, six inches in width to house its long-travel suspension, and was fitted with a pile of exterior, interior and offroad mods to become
the Titan Warrior Concept. It’s 20 feet long, nearly seven feet at the roof, and over seven feet wide – so the vehicle makes a statement. As do its flared fenders, functional hood vents, menacing front grille and headlight treatment. The Titan Warrior Concept is an extreme version of the all-new Titan XD pickup, with more in-your-face styling and some serious off-road enhancements.

recipe Easy Cake Pops 1 (12 oz) package candy melts, divided 24 plain doughnut holes 24 lollipop sticks 1 tbsp candy sprinkles, as desired Place about 1/4 cup of candy melts into a small bowl, and melt in the microwave at 40% power for 30 seconds; stir and continue to heat for 30 second-intervals until it is completely melted. Poke a hole halfway through the doughnut hole with a lollipop stick, then dip the end of the stick into the melted candy and reinsert into the hole. This holds the doughnut hole firmly on the stick. Set the doughnut pop upright into a block of plastic foam, and refrigerator for 1 hour. When pops are firmly attached to their sticks, melt the remaining candy melts. Dip the doughnut hole, covering it completely, and sprinkle with candy sprinkles. Return the decorated pops to the plastic foam block to set. Enjoy!

Top Reasons Why Education Is So Important T
he youth of today are the ones who will make big changes tomorrow. They are in a phase where they soak up information that is given to them and believe that anything is possible. A strong education plays a key role in fostering this ambition and provides the opportunity for success. Not only does an education nurture the ability to develop confidence and discover one’s potential, but for both communities and nations, educated citizens provide a foundation for sustainable social and economic progress. As the best tool to bring positive change to a society and develop a generation of responsible individuals, a strong education can contribute to success in many ways.
Learn how to learn. In school, not only do you absorb the content that is given to you but you learn how to learn. While the details of a book report in grade five may be a little foggy, school teaches you how to gather information and apply knowledge. This is a skill that stays with you no matter which career path you choose. Strong values and interpersonal skills. Education is not just about learning from textbooks, it also provides life skills through interactions with others to refine our ability to work together, resolve conflict and communicate effectively. The ability to engage in informed discussion and understand others’ points of view also help to develop strong morals. Transform dreams into realities. Defining career objectives and deciding what you want in life is something that is fostered through education. Exposure to a wide range of disciplines provides an opportunity to explore new areas to set goals. Foster the growth of a nation. Education is vital for the prosperity of a nation. An educated member of society can contribute to their community and participate in ongoing changes and developments supporting the greater picture. Participating in the census will provide a better understanding of the characteristics of a population and the communities’ needs regarding education programs. Citizens across Canada including Indigenous communities can learn more online at census.gc.ca. Courtesy of: www.newscanada.com

SCHOOL
Internationally recognized since 1961, TMS School delivers a seamless, internationally-acclaimed educational experience designed to inspire and challenge students, from 18 months to 18 years, to discover the best of who they are and to achieve their full potential. SECRET TO OUR SUCCESS
OUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY
TMS seamlessly combines a flagship Montessori program for students from age 18 months to Grade 6, and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme for students from Grade 7 to Grade 12. The program focuses on more than mastering basic skills and knowledge, the students develop fully in academics, arts, athletics and citizenship. Starting at 18 months of age, TMS helps students to help themselves. Students develop confidence and higher level thinking skills necessary to make the most of whatever challenge they encounter. In TMS grades 7 through 12, individual student learning is globally benchmarked against other students in the IB program.
At all ages, our students learn to take action to make positive differences in the school, the community and the world. The Bayview and Elgin Mills Campuses are located in Richmond Hill. TMS is a member of CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools) and accredited by IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization), CIS (Conference of Independent Schools) and CCMA (Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators).
