The show includes works by Frank Auerbach, Edward Burra, Thurston Hopkins, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore as well as two striking new ceramic works by Perry himself, who won the Turner Prize in 2003.

Rob Ryan is an artist, designer and illustrator famed for his delicate, hand-cut paper works which use distinctive idioms or tell romantic stories through beautifully intricate drawings. Ryan has undertaken many high profile commissions for a variety of clients including Vogue, Liberty and Paul Smith, as well as designs for the forthcoming children’s book by the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy.

MARINA WARNER, GUARDIAN REVIEW

Experience the most important exhibition to date by one of Britain’s foremost artists. Peter Randall-Page makes extraordinary works that draw on scientific structures and organic forms. Embracing the greatest range to date of sculpture and works on paper, the exhibition features over 100 works, including monumental thirteen-tonne sculptures carved from Kilkenny limestone. The gallery gardens contain stunning three-part spherical stones in marble and limestone, and new carved boulders. Exhibition and publication supported by: Romulus Construction Ltd.

YSP showcases an enthralling project by the US artist James Lee Byars (1932-1997), known for making profound and challenging performance art and sculpture. Byars travelled extensively and visited YSP in 1996, when he was beguiled by the place.

BREATH 10 October / Chapel / 2-4pm / FREE Using the making of The Angel as a point of departure, Iain Stephenson and Richard William Wheater invite twenty four people to contribute a single breath to create a new glass artwork. Participants will be chosen at random from those who register interest by 5 October at kim.hirst@ysp.co.uk

YSP presents The Angel (1989) in the beautiful and powerful space of the Chapel, built in 1744 and now open to visitors for the first time in 250 years. Comprising 125 hand-blown, Murano glass spheres in an arrangement inspired by the Japanese kanji symbol for ‘angel’, the work is a perfect statement for this meditative space. A further selection of sculpture and works on paper, incorporating themes and motifs explored by Byars, will be shown in the Bothy Gallery.

GLASS BLOWING 10 October / Chapel / 12-1pm / FREE Observe the process with artist Richard William Wheater.

Ryan will transform the YSP Centre and Upper Space with his fantastical and unique style and create an exclusive, limited edition screen print. A YSP publication surveying Ryan’s career to date will accompany the exhibition.

To complement this, Perry has selected a new programme of rarely seen films from the BFI National Archive, screened alongside the Longside exhibition for the first and only time. The selection, called Nostalgia for the Bad Times, references a bygone age of good manners, afternoon tea, seaside holidays and coal fires.

TALK: PERFORMING THE OBJECT Saturday 17 October / 2pm / FREE Roger Evans Auditorium, YSP Centre An illustrated talk by Andrew Mitchelson of the Live Art Development Agency relating Live Art practice to the sculptural object, giving essential context to the Byars project. Places are limited, please book through 01924 832642 or kim.hirst@ysp.co.uk

The sphere, with associations of perfection and wholeness, is pivotal in Byars’ work and the use of gold, believed to be a divine metal representing immortality, is also a recurring element. This project gives YSP visitors the opportunity to experience a significant installation by an intriguing artist.
