Saskatchewan Photography Awards launch By Devin Wilger N-R Writer

Saskatchewan photographers have a new opportunity to show off their work. The S a s k a t c h e w a n Photography Awards, held with the Saskatchewan Prairie Light Photography Festival, will give someone the chance to get a gallery show with their work. Don Stein, Executive Director of the Godfrey Dean, says their goal was

to do something new with a photography prize, and they decided to focus on a body of work rather than a single photograph. Stein admits this is a much different focus than many other photography prizes, and Stein admits that it’s going to be an ambitious undertaking for both photographers and judges. “This is quite a bit more work for both sides, because the judges have to go through a lot of photographs.” Part of the goal is to

have “work that’s about something,” explains Stein, rather than a variety of images. He says that part of the challenge is finding a thematic link between the different images, and having an idea behind them. “What we’re looking for is some thoughtfulness. Anyone can accidentally take a great picture with a digital camera, but take 20 great pictures and send those in.” There will be two categories that people can enter. The professional

category is the bigger one, and will require 20-24 images, as well as the work they have posted online. Entrants in the enthusiast category have to submit less work, but are also encouraged to share their online presence. The inclusion of the online element, which is weighted equally with the submitted work, was a way to get a better idea of the artist and their point of view, explains Stein. “In many cases it’s

very illuminating to look at the rest of the work that they didn’t choose, which I, as a curator, might find more interesting.” The competition is specifically for Saskatchewan photographers, whether they are located here or an ex-pat identify as a Saskatchewan artist. The prize for the professional category is a solo exhibition at Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, printing and exhibition framing, professional prize of

$1,650. There is also the Enthusiast category, the prize being a group exhibition for 4 to 6 photographers at Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, printing and exhibition framing and a photographer prize of $300 each. The entry fee is $20 for the professional category and $10 for the enthusiast category. The full list of requirements is available at saskprairielight.com. The entry deadline is March 31. They hope to announce the winners on April 16.

Springside to host Vibram Birdie Bash

Mark Sunday, May 29 on your calendar and then plan on being at the Springside Disc Golf Course to take part in the first ‘Vibram Birdie Bash’ tournament. “We are really looking forward to this event. It’s one of the reasons we undertook to install a disc golf course in Springside, to host events for our local supporters, and hopefully draw some people to the community who have never visited before,” said Shauna S t a n l e y - S e y m o u r, Community Wellness Program Coordinator, Springside Community Centre. The event will be part of a Vibram Birdie Bash series that will see similar events held across North America and beyond. So while participation will have players as part of a much larger fraternity of disc golfers, it is ideal for beginners. “The Birdie Bash format is great for first time disc golfers,” explained Trevor Lyons, Tournament Director with the newly formed Parkland Association of Disc Golf. “The idea is to throw over a generally shorter course to make aces and birdies easier,

and those count in the scoring of the event. You don’t need to have a big arm to throw 300-feet in a Birdie Bash.” In that regard the Springside course is a great fit. “We had limited area to design the course, so it is a shorter course that makes use of trees and cover to be fun,” said Calvin Daniels, interim president of the PADG, and co-designer of the course. “The local community has done a great job clearing underbrush, and while we will need to adjust a few target positions once the snow goes, by tournament day the Springside course is going to be just a great deal of fun for golfers.” The Springside event will be part of a new PADG tournament series which will run from May through until October at courses across the area. “The Springside Vibram Birdie Bash will be one of the first events on the new circuit we are currently working on,” said Lyons. “So that is exciting for the PADG.” The idea of the tournament series is to have each course in the PADG area that is interested to host one event where participation will pro-

vide points toward season-end recognition. “We hope most courses participate as a way to highlight what they have to offer,” said Daniels, who added by midsummer there is expected to be about 20 courses in the PADG area. “We are seeing tremendous interest in disc golf with communities, regional parks and other organizations seeing the potential of providing such a low cost, all age, sport / recreation.” Seymour said that is what had Springside interested. “We are always looking at ways to provide more recreation oppor-

tunities in our community, especially those that are accessible by nearly everyone, get people outdoors and are affordable,” she said. “Disc golf covers all those criteria.” As for the Springside Vibram Birdie Bash, a 36-basket event played over two rounds of 18; the cost is $45 US, but the player package that comes with the entry fee is a great one, including a Vibram Fairway Driver and a Vibram Putt & Approach disc. “That’s a big part of why it’s great for people new to the sport. Everybody plays with the discs they get as part of

the DAVID’s DEAL ofWEEK

the entry fee, and at the end of the day you keep the discs,” said Lyons. “So you are set to play all summer after that.” You also receive a polo shirt, water bottle and a few other ‘goodies’ as part of the entry. Entries are already open at http://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Vibram_Birdie_

Bash_at_Springside_2016 “Enter early and come on out to the event,” said Seymour. “We are hoping for a full card (54), and lots of fun to really show off our course and our community.” Keep in the loop on all PADG events at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / PatrickParkDiscGolf. -Submitted

something new to learn, tasks to do, and gear to purchase. Prepping is basically a trendy way of saying, “I’m trying to plan and prepare for anything.” Of course many reading this article will think back to a time not so many decades ago when prepping was simply called — everyday life. Being prepared is a topic that is not boring and could easily be started off in any number of ways, but in our humble company

we ask the difficult questions first and take stock second. These questions are as old as time and every generation has faced these problems, and asking tough questions is not to induce fear but confront it. I would be the first to encourage you and your family to discuss these questions with courage, then you will find wonderful ways to solve some of the issues and likely be surprised how “well on your way” you already may be! Prepping can be an enormous task especially if you are just get-

shop to collect fire insurance, a not uncommon practice at the time. • On March 23, 1937, Craig Breedlove, the first person to reach land speeds of up to 600 mph in a jet-powered vehicle, is born. He designed a three-wheeled, rocketshaped vehicle powered by a surplus military jet engine and dubbed it the Spirit of America. • On March 27, 1945, Nazi Germany launches its last V-2 long-range rockets, killing 162 civilians in England and Belgium. The V-2 could carry a 2,000-pound warhead and became the precursor of the ICBM of the postwar era. • On March 26, 1953, American medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk announces that he

has successfully tested a vaccine against the virus that causes polio. In 1952 -- an epidemic year for the crippling disease -there were 58,000 new cases reported in the U.S. • On March 21, 1965, in the name of black voting rights, 3,200 civil-rights demonstrators, led by Martin Luther King Jr., begin a historic 54-mile march from Selma, Alabama, to the state capitol at Montgomery. • On March 24, 1989, the worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in Alaska’s remote Prince William Sound. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil was released and eventually covered 1,300 miles of coastline.

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay

Surely by now you have heard the word “Prepping”. If you have not, the definition of this word is: the practice of making active preparations for a possible catastrophic disaster or emergency, typically by stockpiling food, ammunition, and other supplies. Prepping is a way of life and there is always

• On March 22, 1765, to raise funds to pay off debts and defend the new American territories won from the French, the British government passes the Stamp Act. It levied a tax on all materials printed in the colonies, from newspapers and pamphlets to playing cards and even dice. • On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City burns down, killing 145 workers. Owners had refused to install sprinkler systems and take other safety measures in case they needed to burn down the

ting started. You may feel overwhelmed at the thought of trying to prepare for any and all scenarios, and the truth is, you really can’t prepare for everything. However, you can be well prepared for most disasters and emergencies that may come your way. Start with these questions: What events would be most likely to occur in your area? Where will you go if you have to evacuate or may have to stay in? How will you communicate with others/ family in a long term emergency? How prepared are you

for most first aid situations? What are your needs for 30, 60, 90 days for food, water, hygiene and so on? What about your pets/ animals? What essential skills, equipment, books, tools, etc do you have or will need to continue function of your home? Please realize that there is no bad time to start and even the modest plan can make a difference. Over the next several weeks we will discuss many simple and innovative ways to help you “prep” for your family. Being prepared is going to give you and your family a very secure

feeling that is actually quite fun to pursue and worth the effort, I hope you will join us over the coming weeks in exploring and discussion. I will be speaking at the Norquay Tradeshow on March 19th at 11:00 a.m. about this very topic, stop in and say hello! When you think of “tea time,” the image of sipping a relaxing cup of tea with friends may come to mind, but when those words bounce off the walls in my house, the teapot isn’t whistling. Instead, my husband and sons are racing out the door to make their “tee time” at the golf course. When my Irish-born

friend Margaret moved to the States more than 10 years ago, she couldn’t help but notice our always-on-the-go, hectic and harried lifestyle. She was determined to show Americans that it is possible to pause and enjoy friendship like the Irish tend to do. So she not only makes a daily event of tea time for herself,

but she also shares the tradition with her children and friends. Why not make a family resolution to slow down and enjoy simple moments together, like tea time? As Margaret observes, “By the time everyone sips some tea, slathers scones with jam and butter, sips and then pours more tea, can you imagine the wonderful, one-on-one discussions a person can have with children, family and friends?” Here are some ideas to get started: Kids can help by set-

ting the “tea tray,” a necessary component for tea time. You’ll need a sugar bowl, pitcher for milk and a small plate with sliced lemons. Cover the coffee table or dining-room table with a white lace cloth. (She collects hers at tag sales.) Then place cups, saucers, spoons and napkins around the table. Each person can be given a dessert plate and butter knife used to cut scones or cake into pieces or for spreading butter and cream. When it’s time to sit down, let the children be responsible for passing

the milk, sugar, cake or scones. How to brew a proper pot of tea: 1. Boil a kettle of water. 2. Pour 1 inch of hot water into a china or silver teapot. Swirl to warm, and then pour it out. 3. Into the pot, measure 1 teaspoon of tea per person and 1 extra teaspoon for the pot. 4. Add rapidly boiling water to the pot and steep for five minutes. 5. Strain tea into teacups. 6. Dispose of used tea leaves in compost pile or

• Here’s your springtime reminder: As you install your window screens to air out the house (or even if you keep them up year-round), double-check to make sure they are pet-secure. Cats love a windowsill, and they can fall through and out the window if screens are not secure. If you have a pup, you may want to give it the push test — it should be able to withstand Fido’s nose jammed against it! • To preserve your manicure in the garden, wear gardening gloves. If you love the feel of dirt in your hands but don’t love dirty nails, simply rake your nails over a bar of soap before you dig in. The soap gets under there, keeping dirt out. Bonus, it’s easier to wash your hands afterward! • “If you use ground chicken or turkey to make lower-fat meatballs, give them some time to firm up by making the meatballs and putting them in the fridge for an hour or so. They hold together much better that way.” — F.K. in Missouri • Some tips for working with garlic: To peel cloves, microwave for 10-15 seconds or cover in plastic (in a sandwich baggie or plastic wrap) and crush lightly with a glass bowl or plate. To chop or mince, spray your knife with cooking spray or put a few drops of oil on the clove itself, as this will keep the garlic from sticking to the knife. Finally, go ahead and crush that garlic by turning your knife on its side and pressing down hard.

The PC Party has already been proactive on policy development with our pre-election release of the Waste Heat Initiative which would generate greener power, grow food for Saskatchewan families and create badly needed job opportunities across the province. PC Party candidates will be the only Party calling for the dismantling of the 14 Health Regions and their bloated bureaucracies brought in by the NDP 22 years ago and perpetuated by the Sask Party. “We must return to a more cost effective model based on accountability in the Legislature by elected officials for the 40% of every tax dollar spent on health care” said PC Party Leader Rick Swenson. “I am proud to say for the first time since 1995, the PC message will be taken to the voters by all communication tools available and by candidates at the doors across the province.”

Healthy eating without artificial ingredients A14

(NC) — From fine Canadian rye to specialty teas and coffees, the process of blending is integral for creating many Canadian favourites. In fact, did you know that soft non-hydrogenated margarine is crafted from a blend of plant and seed oils, like canola and sunflower oil? It starts by pressing the plants and seeds into oils. Each oil has its own unique qualities, and by blending these oils to help create margarine, you get the best of both worlds – a delicious taste and a source of essential omega 3 unsaturated fat. Canadians today want foods that are free from artificial preservatives,

with a simple and recognizable ingredient list. The Becel margarine you love with simpler ingredients starts with canola grown by Canadian farmers and has been carefully crafted to help meet these preferences. Starting with a simple blend of plant and seed oils, along with other ingredients like buttermilk powder and a pinch of salt, margarine is perfect for cooking and baking. “As a cook I love the versatility of Becel margarine with simpler ingredients. The plant and seed oils are blended to create the finest margarine, so it’s

my go-to ingredient for cooking, baking, roasting, sautéing, and grilling,” says Rose Reisman, leading Canadian healthy lifestyle and food expert, and spokesperson. “We often think of using margarine instead of butter for spreading, but it’s important to remember that margarine can replace butter 1:1 in any recipe, providing irresistible flavour, with 80 per cent less saturated fat than butter.” Because Becel margarine is made from a blend of plant and seed oils, it is a source of omega 3 polyunsaturated fat which our bodies need, making margarine a simple way to help make

good fats part of any diet. Try this delicious gluten free recipe idea. GLUTEN FREE BLUEBERRY BUTTERMILK MUFFINS Prep Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Makes: 12 muffins • 2-1/2 cups (625 mL) gluten-free pancake and baking mix • 1/4 tsp. (1 mL) salt • 2 cups (500 mL) fresh blueberries • 1/2 cup (125 mL) Becel Buttery Taste margarine • 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) firmly packed light brown sugar

• 2 large eggs • 1 cup (250 mL) lowfat buttermilk • 1 tsp. (5 mL) vanilla extract • 1 tsp. (5 mL) finely grated lemon peel Preheat oven to 375˚F (190˚C). Line 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners; set aside. Combine gluten free pancake and baking mix with salt in medium bowl; gently toss in blueberries. Beat Becel Buttery Taste margarine with brown sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in

eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and lemon peel. Gently stir in pancake and baking mixture with wooden spoon. Evenly spoon into prepared muffin pan. Bake 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Let cool 10 minutes on wire rack; remove from pan and cool completely. Recipe Tip: If using a pancake and baking mix or a flour blend without baking powder and baking soda, add 1 Tbsp. (15 mL) baking powder and 1/4 tsp. (1 mL) baking soda to pancake and baking mixture. Nutrition information and more recipe ideas can be found at becel.ca.

A flavorful fresh take on meatballs Meatballs are a dish beloved by many. Some people prefer their meatballs atop a plate of steaming pasta, while others can’t resist a meatball hero slathered in sauce. Even those who aspire to eat less meat can enjoy meatballs thanks to the following recipe for “Albóndigas” (Spanish for “meatballs”) from Joy Manning and Tara Mataraza Desmond’s “Almost Meatless” (Ten Speed Press). Calling for only a half-pound of meat, this dish employs steel-cut oats to substitute for additional meat and to soak up flavor. Try it out and see if your

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have two dogs that we adopted from shelters: “Kylie,” a beautiful greyhound who is missing one front leg, and “Zu-zu,” a toy poodle, who is about age 16 and is almost completely blind. I’m writing to let readers know that caring for pets with physical challenges can be expensive and challenging. They need to know what they’re in for before adopting a challenged dog. We wouldn’t trade our two “kids” for the world. Kylie is quiet and very determined even though walking can be tough for her. Zu-zu is yappy and can get anxious when she’s home alone, but is loyal and loving. Both have additional physical issues that require more trips to the vet, extra medicines, even special equipment.

guests can tell just how little meat this tasty dish contains. ALBÓNDIGAS Serves 4 to 6 •1⁄2 cup steel-cut oatmeal •1⁄2 cup loosely packed fresh cilantro leaves, chopped, plus more for garnish •4 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tablespoons), divided •1 chipotle in adobo sauce, seeded and chopped into a paste •4 teaspoons ground cumin, divided •2 teaspoons ground coriander, divided •Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepTheir care can run over a thousand dollars a year, easily. We have pet insurance that covers their basic care and some of their medication, which helps quite a bit. Please let your readers know to be aware of the challenge they take on when they adopt dogs with illnesses or handicaps. — Karen H., Conway, New Hampshire DEAR KAREN: You told them, and I thank you! Caring for challenged dogs can be incredibly rewarding, but also difficult. They can have both physical and emotional issues, particularly if they’ve experienced past trauma, neglect or abuse. Before adopting a pet, ask plenty of questions of both shelter supervisors about a pet’s known past, its behaviors and what its treatment may cost. Talk to a vet ahead of time about the care and commitment that may be required. When you’re prepared to care for a challenged pet, you’ll be able to create a supportive home for them. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Mix together the oatmeal, the cilantro, half the garlic, the chipotle, 2 teaspoons of the cumin, 1 teaspoon of the corian-

der, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1⁄4 teaspoon pepper in a bowl. Gently work the lamb into the mixture, distributing it evenly. Form balls out of tablespoon-size scoops of the mixture and set aside. Heat the oil in a Dutch oven or a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Stir in the remaining garlic, cumin

and coriander, cooking for an additional 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes and water and stir to combine. Bring the sauce to a simmer and add the meatballs. Simmer partially covered for 45 minutes. Season the sauce with salt and pepper to taste, squeeze the lime juice over the top and serve with extra chopped cilantro.

Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: In March 2013, I fell and landed on my left side. Since then, I have had quite a lot of pain. I had an MRI that showed I have a tear of the gluteus medius muscle. I was advised to have a surgical repair done as an outpatient. My family doctor wants me to wait and talk to another surgeon. My pain is aggravated by pressure and weightbearing activities. What is your suggestion? I’m 77 and in pretty good health, and I walk my dogs several times per day. — M.C. ANSWER: Gluteus medius tears are an increasingly recognized cause of hip pain. The gluteus medius muscle helps hold the hip in place during walking. They often are treated conservatively, with injection and physical therapy. They can be mistaken for trochanteric bursitis, but persistence of pain despite treatment

should make the physician consider alternate diagnoses, and an MRI usually makes the diagnosis. In your case, you have been suffering for two years, and I agree that it’s time to consider surgical repair. However, I also have to agree with your family doctor that a second opinion may be wise. There are several new surgical techniques,

and you want an experienced surgeon operating on you. Talking to a second surgeon at the very least can make you more confident that the surgery is necessary. Postoperative recovery may require six weeks of crutches or other assistive device, and another six weeks in a hip brace, although the exact recovery depends on you and the type of

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can high blood pressure cause blood clots, blindness and strokes? Or is this caused by taking the wrong combination of blood pressure medicines? — Anon. ANSWER: High blood pressure over months or years causes damage to the lining of blood vessels. This can indeed predispose a person to a stroke. Reducing blood pressure gradually reduces risk of stroke. Blood clots also can cause strokes, but these usually are not linked to blood pressure, high or low, and instead are linked to conditions that affect the blood itself or

that affect the rhythm of the heart. Some medicines, such as estrogen, make blood clots more likely. In people with very high blood pressure, lowering it too much, too quickly can cause strokes. The blood pressure needs to be reduced gradually, which usually can be done as an outpatient. There are still a few times when people with extremely high blood pressure are admitted to the hospital, where blood pressure can be brought down very slowly in a controlled environment. High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it’s treated. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 104W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address.

Dec. 13, 1932 - Mar. 18, 2014

December 4, 1979 – March 20, 2015. Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same. We have to hide our heartaches When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are tears that fall. Living our days without you Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was kind and true And when we needed someone We could always count on you. A thousand words won’t bring you back We know because we tried And neither will a million tears We know because we’ve cried. You’ve left behind our broken hearts And precious memories too But we’ve never wanted memories We only wanted you. It only takes a little space To write how much we miss you But it will take the rest of our lives To forget the day we lost you. Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts. Luv Mom, Dad and all your family

We thought of you with love today, But this is nothing new, We thought of you yesterday and the days before that too. We think of you in silence and often speak your name. All we have now are our memories, and your picture in a frame. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone. A part of us went with you the day God took you home. —Always remembered and sadly missed, your loving wife Iris, Sheldon, Jacquie & family

YUZIK - In loving memory of Victoria; Wife, Mother, Baba, Sister, who passed away February 11, 2008. We miss you in the morning, and when the sun fades away. The ache within our hearts, will just not go away. Our hearts fill with love for you, when we think how much you cared. As we relive all the happiness, and the joy that we all once shared. You’re with us every moment, and in every move we make. Lie the memories we have of you, that we will never forsake. -Loving You Always Forgetting You Never. David your loving husband, who just joined you in heaven... Lorraine (Tom) & Darlene (Brian), Chantel (Ryan) & Sister Mary.

There are no words to express how blessed we have been. Our family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to our many family and friends who sustained us with many mass offerings, mementos, gifts, prayers and many acts of kindness that we received since the passing of our mother, Mary Chillog (the only sister of 15 brothers). Thank you to everyone for the visits, all the beautiful flowers, the great food, compassion, hugs, phone calls, texts and posts as well as your attendance at mom’s services and the many donations made in her memory. Thanks also to those who made donations in memory of mom to “The Children’s Wish Foundation.” And a special thanks to our cousins for their generous contribution. It will be treasured forever. Thank you to the staff at St. Paul’s Lutheran Home in Melville for the wonderful care mom received. Thank you Father F. Hengen and Father Mitch for your guidance and support during the services. Your words of encouragement and prayers are appreciated by everyone. Thank you also goes out to Len Gadica and Leonard Varga once again for sharing your talent and services at the funeral mass. A thanks also goes out to the ladies of the Rosary Sodality for the lovely lunch they provided. A huge thank you to Vern and Kathy Novak and staff from Christie’s Funeral Chapel for your guidance, genuine compassion, true professionalism and your respectful ways. It is appreciated more than you know. I’m sure the service you provided our family equaled the service provided by Christie’s Funeral Chapel 109 years ago in 1907 to mom’s grandfather, Henri Molnar. We thank you. Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings in Heaven’s floor where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy. “Peace Mama”. -Dennis, Cheryl, Glen, Marcella and families. Q: I have a serious crush on “The Revenant” co-star Tom Hardy. I heard he’s coming to television. Is that true? — Linda T., via email

A: Tom Hardy is indeed set to star in the FX/BBC One eight-episode miniseries called “Taboo.” The series was created and written by Steven Knight, and is based on a story cowritten by Tom and his father, Chips Hardy. A premiere date has yet to be determined, but I can tell you that the story, set in 1813, centers on Tom’s character, an adventurer who returns to Britain from Africa, along with 14 stolen diamonds, to seek vengeance after the death of his father.

Q: I grew up watching, and loving, the cartoon “Voltron.” My brother told me he heard it was being remade. Is

Colt Prattes that true? — Cara O., Deerfield, Michigan A: Netflix — which is by far my favorite way to watch TV and movies — is developing an updated version of the popular 1980s classic cartoon, in conjunction with Dreamworks Animation, which premieres sometime later this year. The original series ran for only two seasons — from September 1984 through November 1985 — and was separated into different parts: “Lion Force

A: ABC and Lionsgate are bringing us the live version of “Dirty Dancing” later this year, starring Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) as Baby and relative newcomer Colt Prattes (best known for starring in P!nk’s music video for “Try”) as Johnny. This three-hour musical event also will star Debra Messing as Baby’s mother, Marjorie Houseman, and Nicole Scherzinger as Penny. As of this writing, the rest of the cast had not yet been revealed and/or cast.

Q: One of my boyfriend’s favorite movies is “Neighbors” with Zac Efron and Seth Rogan. I told him that they are making a sequel, but he doesn’t believe me. Can you settle this disagreement? — Jennifer R., via email A: You can tell your boyfriend that his girlfriend knows of what she speaks. May 20 is the premiere date for “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,” in which Mac (Seth) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) have to deal with a sorority that moves in next door, where the hellraising fraternity used to be. PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” (PG13) — The final installment of the Hunger Games series finally has arrived — and arrows fly, things blow up, and hard truths are learned. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) leads a team during a full-scale invasion by the Coin-backed rebels against the greedy Capital. She’s supported by one-third of her love triangle, Gale (Liam Hemsworth), and one of the shifty rebel-types (Natalie Dormer). After the foot-dragging of the last film, our heroine finally gets an arrow pointed right at the sinister Snow (Donald Sutherland). After the cash-grabby

Will Ferrell in “Daddy’s Home” decision to slice the final piece of the trilogy into two, the climactic battle and sobering aftermath seem like drawn-out concluding paragraphs. The big budget and visual flare are all on full-display, leaving fans of the series with a somewhat satisfying closer. “Daddy’s Home” (R) — Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg go head-tohead in this edgy familycentered comedy that pits dad against stepdad, nasty against nice, and comedy against wit. Brad (Ferrell) is a kind-heart-

ed, fuddy-duddy milquetoast who has put in an earnest effort to gain the love of his stepchildren. Dusty (Wahlberg) is the rolling stone of a biological father who resurfaces and goes into competition with Brad, trying to prove himself the superior father figure despite his past transgressions. The humor mostly comes from the repeated humiliations of Ferrell’s character. There’s a public breakdown and a cheesy resolution, but not a lot of laughs before then. This is not the Adam McKay kind of Ferrell-comedy like “The Other Guys” (which got good laughs from a Ferrell-Wahlberg team up), but that’s what it’s trying to be. “The Letters” (PG) — This loving biopic of Mother Teresa (portrayed by Juliet Stevenson) centers on her work in the 1940s and ‘50s, reaching out to impoverished people in India. From a

teaching position, Teresa describes (the film doesn’t show it) a moment when she feels the pull to go into the worst slums of Calcutta and reach needy people there. The squalor of the people she feels called to save seems toned down so as not to shock audiences. The biggest sin committed by the film — and done so repeatedly — is the act of telling instead of showing. Pivotal moments and important themes are artlessly doled out in plain English, demonstrating very little faith in the audience. “A Brighter Summer Day” (NR) — Originally released in 1991, this masterpiece of subtlety and nostalgia is finally getting a restored U.S.

release thanks to some interested parties. Set in 1960 Taiwan, the film follows teenagers coming-of-age in a confusing time, on an island just off the coast of a Communist juggernaut, but still within reach of Western influences. The movie takes its time — all four hours of it — to set up the characters and conflicts. You’ll be lulled into their world, a confusing and dynamic place where the future is uncertain

cast, the grace and beauty of a perfectly executed jump shot or high-flying dunk is lost. Hockey broadcasts consist primarily of commentary on line colors (“skates past the red line, passes to the blue line, back to the blue line, pass stolen at the red line, to the blue line, he shoots, stick save and the puck is kicked back at the blue line ...), and boxing has lost any semblance of the classic drama created by oldtime announcers. But baseball works. In fact, I would argue that baseball is better on radio than it is on TV. Let’s face it, the action in baseball comes in 60-, 90-, and 400-foot bursts. During the course of a three-hour game there may be, on average, less than an hour’s worth of action. And even if there’s a guy with a dramatic curveball on the mound like Zack Greinke, in most parts of the stadium you can’t really tell what he’s throwing. In the park, the focus is on the outcome of a pitch, rarely is it about the mechanics. On TV, fans get the familiar centerfield camera view. While this allows you to see the pitch and its velocity and arc, it’s really an unnatural view, as most people have never watched a game from that angle, that far away. And while it lets you see the batter swing, the best way to take in a batter’s swing is from the side. Lastly, that view does not allow you to see the position of the fielders or the lead of the

runners. Granted, great production crews will have extra cameras and offer you brief glimpses, but the experience just never really clicked with viewers and that, probably more than anything led to football’s dominance on TV. Not so on the radio, where the attention is on the details. A good announcer — of which there are many — adheres to the storytelling tradition during a classic baseball broadcast. They will announce the starting lineups rather than just posting it on your screen, they will describe the details of the uniforms and the atmosphere in the park, and you will better hear the pop of the ball in the catcher’s mitt, hum of the crowd and crack of the bat. Descriptions of the play are far more intense, and your imagination can add flourishes to mundane plays you’ve seen a thousand times. Best of all, you can multi-task (my preference being a beer and a porch). I’m no shill, but I have to recommend the MLB At Bat application for both Apple and Android phones to all baseball fans — particularly those on the go. The app costs $19.99 for the season, $4.99 monthly, and gives you access to every radio broadcast in the country plus being able to see video highlights of key plays if you wish. Other Internet radio sites offer some broadcasts, but MLB At Bat is well worth the money. Check it for yourself and remember ... yesterday is a canceled check, tomorrow is a promissory note, but today is all the time you have, so spend it wisely. Food safety

Canadians are fortunate to have a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables year-round at farmers’ markets and grocery stores. Ensuring the safety of these foods is a shared responsibility between growers and farmers, the food industry, provinces and federal organizations. Here are some facts about food safety you should know from CropLife Canada. Did you know? • About 88 per cent of all fresh food and 90 per cent of processed food items show no traces of pesticides. • Both organic and conventional foods are grown using pesticides, both of which are regulated by Health Canada. • A pesticide undergoes more than 200 studies for health, safety and the environment before it is registered for use in Canada. • The average Canadian saves 58 per cent on their grocery bill thanks to higher yields from pesticides and plant biotechnology.

HOLLYWOOD — Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for the 2013 film “Dallas Buyer’s Club,” then followed it with “Interstellar” (which cost $165 million and made $675 million) and several annoying commercials for Lincoln Motors. His next film project was the $25 million “Sea of Trees,” with Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe. After it was panned by critics and booed at The Cannes Film Festival in May, it was pulled from

IRISH STOUT SKILLET PIE A store-bought crust makes this one-pan beef pie even easier, and the hearty filling is sure to make for a family favorite. •1 tablespoon olive oil •1 pound lean ground beef •4 ounces small shiitake mushrooms •Kosher salt •Pepper •2 tablespoons tomato paste •1/2 cup frozen pearl onions •1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves •3 tablespoon all-purpose flour •8 ounces stout (we used Guinness) •2 cup frozen butternut squash pieces •1 cup frozen peas •1 refrigerated rolled pie crust •1 large egg Heat oven to 375 F. Heat the oil in a 9-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the beef, mushrooms and 3/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper, and cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Spoon off and discard any fat. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Stir in the onions and thyme, then sprinkle with the flour and cook, stirring, for 30 seconds. Add the stout and simmer until the liquid has thickened, about 1 minute. Add 1/2 cup water and bring to a simmer. Add the squash and peas, return to a simmer, then remove from heat. (This whole step takes only 2 to 3 minutes total.) Unroll the pastry on a cutting board, brush with the egg, then cut a cross in the center. Lay the dough on top of the beef mixture (egg-side up), gently pressing the edges around the inside of the skillet. Bake until golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Makes 4 servings. CABBAGE-PATCH HASH •1 pound boneless chicken breast •1 head (small, about

searches for gold in the Indonesian jungle, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Bruce Greenwood and Stacy Keach (no release date yet). He’s also done three new Lincoln commercials directed by Gus Van Sant, and if you thought the others were annoying, these have no dialogue at all. Producers are trying to figure out what set the “Deadpool” box office on fire. In its first weekend it raked in $284 million. Was it comic book-crazed fans waiting 11 years for this film, or was it star Ryan Reynolds full-frontal nude scene that has

people returning in disbelief? This could start a new trend. Reynolds’ next is “Criminal,” with Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones, out April 15, but don’t expect a nude scene from him or his two Oscar-winning costars in this one. Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, last seen in “The Age of Adaline,” plays a blind girl who regains her sight in “All I See Is You” (no date yet), and a young woman stranded on a buoy with a great white shark between her and the shore in “The Shallows” (due June 24). Exploring the history of peanuts A28

March 18, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

Peanuts and their creamy offshoot, peanut butter, are popular snack foods and lunchtime staples. The distinct and mild flavor of peanuts attracts many people to these shelled legumes, which many might be surprised to learn aren’t true nuts. An interesting and unusual plant, the peanut plant flowers above the ground but bears fruit below the ground, according to Whitley’s Peanut Factory. Peanuts do not grow on trees, nor do they form on roots. When peanut flowers are pollinated, they begin to grow and lose their petals. The bud, or “peg,” grows downward, forming a small stem that pushes into the soil. While there are many varieties of peanuts, the most common types include the Runner, Virginia, Spanish and

Valencia. Runners are usually found in peanut butters. Peanuts thrive in warmer climates, which is why they tend to be produced in Asia, Africa, Australia, and areas of North and South America. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia are some of the major peanut producing states in America. Much of the popularity of peanuts can be traced to George Washington Carver. Carver was born into slavery, but he would become an artist, educator, chemist, and botanist. He was instrumental in transforming the peanut from a cast-aside item into a cash crop. He also helped develop many different uses for peanuts beyond food. Carver found that peanuts, which contain protein, could help replen-

ish nutrient-ravaged soils. Rather than plant cotton year after year, he convinced farmers to rotate the planting of cotton with peanuts, thus keeping the soil healthy. In turn, he developed many more ways the peanuts could be put to use, including how the protein-rich legumes could be used in cooking. Peanuts then became a popular component of animal feed. Hogs that ate a diet of peanuts and corn could produce high quality hams and bacon. Today, peanuts are used in cooking oils and lubricants. Peanut oil also makes a decent biodiesel fuel. Peanuts contain a fair share of monosaturated fats. Considering fat is a major component of many soaps, peanuts can be turned into soaps and other cleansers. Carver experimented

The meaning of Good Friday

Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the

death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the

Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including non-Christians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. Good Friday is one of the holiest days of the year for Christians across the globe. This year Good Friday is celebrated on March 25.

with peanuts and other plants to produce natural dyes. Peanuts may not be able to produce vivid coloring, but Carver was able to use peanut pigment to make wood stains, paints and inks. In addition to these applications, Carver and other scientists have investigated even more ways to put peanuts to

use. These include everything from glue to insecticides to face creams. All in all, the widespread consumption and use of peanuts helped propel them to become one of the most popular crop plants. Even peanut shells are quite useful. Shells are an excellent source of crude fiber and can

be used in industrial absorbent functions. Peanuts can be found in fertilizers and mulch used in gardens. Peanuts also can serve as attractive fillers in decorative vases and jars. Versatile, tasty and relatively inexpensive, peanuts are so much more than just delicious snacks.

Low-calorie foods that still fill you up This Week Marketplace | March 18, 2016

Hunger can be a difficult hurdle to clear for people looking to lose weight. While nutritious foods don’t lack for taste, many people adapting to new diets featuring healthy, low-calorie foods find themselves still hungry after meals, making it difficult for them to stay the course and reach their weight-loss goals. Some low-calorie foods may contribute to hunger pangs, but there are many foods that satisfy hunger despite their low calorie count. • Baked potatoes: Potatoes might be high in carbohydrates, but they also are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost the immune system. Baked potatoes also provide a powerful punch of potassium, which can help men and women better control their blood pressure. That’s especially beneficial to overweight or obese men and women

who are already dealing with high blood pressure. Baked potatoes also can make men and women feel full, which should help low-calorie devotees avoid overeating. • Eggs: The reputation of eggs tends to change every few years, and much of that can no doubt be attributed to misinformation about this low-calorie breakfast staple. Eggs are a great source of complete protein, and that protein contributes to feelings of fullness. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, eggs contain all nine essential amino acids that, upon being digested, release hormones that suppress appetite. • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is another excellent and low-calorie source of protein, offering roughly twice as much protein as regular yogurt. Greek yogurt also is an excellent source of

calcium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins B6 and B12. But Greek yogurt also contributes to feelings of fullness, as a study from the NestlĂŠ Nutrition Institute found that consuming proteins found in dairy products increases satiety. • Oatmeal: While many people may only eat oatmeal when fighting a cold, this high-fiber and low-calorie breakfast alternative can be enjoyed yearround, helping to fight feelings of hunger all along. According to the Dairy Council of CaliforniaŠ, oatmeal contains soluble fiber that stays in the stomach for long periods of time. That contributes to feelings of fullness and may just decrease midmorning hunger pangs. The soluble fiber in oatmeal can also decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is often referred to as “bad cholesterol.â€?

• Apple: Apples are another lowcalorie source of soluble fiber, and apples also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish

researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as

the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples. Hunger pangs have derailed many a lowcalorie diet. But there are plenty of low-calorie foods that also satisfy hunger and reduce the likelihood of overeating.

Did you know? Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones that occurs when a person loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Though the disease is most often associated with women over 50, anyone can suffer from osteoporosis, which weakens bones and can make them more susceptible to breaks. Exercise is a great way for men and women to build and maintain strong bones in an attempt to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, weight-bearing exercises can help build and maintain bone density. But the NOF notes that men and women who have suffered broken bones due to osteoporosis or

those at risk of such breaks may need to avoid high-impact weight-bearing exercises, which include dancing, hiking, jogging, and jumping rope, among others. For those whose physicians who suggest they avoid high-impact weightbearing exercises, low-impact weightbearing exercises can help them strengthen their bones. Such exercises may involve low-impact aerobics and using cardiovascular machines, such as elliptical trainers, stair-step machines and treadmills. Additional exercises that can benefit men and women looking to prevent or combat osteoporosis can be found at www.nof.org.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week promises a calmer aspect. Although there might be some lingering effects of a recent job problem, things should continue to ease up. Also expect a change in a home-based situation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) If you feel uneasy about a colleague’s suggestion, it might be that your wise inner Taurean guide is alerting you to a potential problem. Stepping away could turn out to be the right thing to do. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A family gettogether opens up new opportunities for renewing ties. It can be especially effective in dealing with disagreements that should have been, but never were, fully resolved.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might be surprised at the response you get to a recent decision. You might be even more surprised by the reasons behind it. In any event, you’ll learn something important. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your aspects favor resolving any tensions left over from a recent incident. You might want to consider having a “clear the air” talk as soon as you can. A call can lead to a change of plans. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Avoid repeating yourself. If your first few efforts fail to connect, maybe it’s because you haven’t found the right way to get your message across. Try changing your approach. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good

intentions plus a strong resolve to succeed can take you where you want to go. Don’t give up just because someone suggests you might be pursuing an impossible cause. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected setback can be a blessing in disguise. Use it to recheck your facts and how you’ve presented them. Meanwhile, look for ways to expand your contacts. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You should finally be seeing a positive change in a recent personal situation. However, an on-the-job matter might need more attention than you realized. Stay with it. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) While you should be close to completing an important matter, you still need to focus on being focused. But things ease up in time for weekend fun with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A certain matter might take an unexpected turn. Don’t

5 ways to a healthier heart

(NC) — Heart failure is a growing epidemic in Canada, according to a new report from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. This debilitating condition, which has no cure, is the end result of most heart disease. About 50,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed in Canada each year. Because heart failure results from the damage caused by heart attacks and other disease, the best way to protect yourself is by reducing your risk of heart disease in the first place. These tips can get you started on the right path: Keep your diet simple. Eat a healthy, balanced diet that consists of a variety of natural/whole and minimally processed foods, including plenty of vegetables and fruit, a variety of protein sources including lower fat dairy and alternatives, lean meat, poultry and fish,

and whole grains. Avoid highly processed foods. Planning makes perfect. Plan your meals each week and make a list before heading to the grocery store. Cook healthy meals in bigger batches and freeze them. Sip smart. Reach for water or lower fat plain milk (2% MF or less) when you’re thirsty. Skip sugar-loaded beverages including soft drinks, fruit drinks and specialty teas and coffees; they’re high in added sugar with no nutritional value. Find what moves you. No need to go to a gym, just do whatever you enjoy – any activity can

have a positive impact. And remember, if you are pressed for time, you can work in activity in 10-minute bouts. Mix it up. Try new foods such as a new fruit or vegetable each time you shop, and choose a new recipe to try each week. Vary your exercise as well: yard work one day, an exercise class the next, and a ski or bike ride after that. Play in the park with the kids or take a walk with a friend or neighbour. Additional information is available at heartandstroke.ca, where you can also donate to the foundation online.

simply accept it; ask for an explanation. What you learn might be helpful in shifting the situation around to your benefit. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Projecting a positive attitude helps restore calm even when you’re confronting some pretty stormy situations. Stay the course. The outcome will be well worth your efforts. BORN THIS WEEK: While you enjoy tradi-

tion and stability, you also appreciate the good

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Rick was intrigued to learn that Ridge had had a vasectomy. Meanwhile, Ridge and Caroline bonded over their new bundle of joy. Thomas was the last to visit the newborn. (NC) There are simple, proactive changes that you can make to your diet and lifestyle today to benefit your digestive health now, and throughout your life. Desiree Nielsen, registered dietitian and education specialist for Bio-K+, offers her top five tips on how to maintain a healthy digestive system. 1. Bolster your body’s healthy bacteria. Intestinal bacteria communicate with the nervous system, so ensuring a healthy internal bacterial community is

critical. Did you know that most of the serotonin in the body is produced in the gut? And that intestinal bacteria can influence the amount of serotonin produced? Probiotics such as BioK+, available as a pill or in a drinkable format, help by protecting and reinforcing your naturally selected community of healthy bacteria. 2. Eat high fibre plant foods. Fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains feed beneficial bacteria because they are
