Whooping Cough cases in Sunrise Health Region

Cases of pertussis have been recently diagnosed in the southern area of Sunrise Health Region. Pertussis is a serious bacterial infection of the respiratory (breathing) system. Anyone can get pertussis, but the disease is most severe in children less than one year when it can be fatal. This

disease is also severe in pregnant women in the last trimester of pregnancy as it can be passed to the newborn with the potential to cause severe complications and death. During the last four years (2011-2014), there have been 148 cases of pertussis reported in Saskatchewan and twenty percent of total

cases were hospitalized. Early symptoms of pertussis are sneezing, runny nose, a fever and a cough. Over time, the cough gets worse, leading to severe coughing spells with a whooping sound before the next breath and often ends in vomiting. The cough can last up to two months and can make it very hard to

breathe. Young infants may not have these exact symptoms, and a parent or caregiver may not realize how sick their baby really is. Once a person has had pertussis, they do not develop life-long protection and may get the disease again. If you or your child experiences these symptoms, please see your

Crop starting to hit the bins Saskatchewan producers have three per cent of the 2016 crop in the bin, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Seven per cent of the provincial crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Harvest progress is on par with the five-year average (2011-2015). The break in rain showers toward the end of the week allowed producers in many parts of the province to continue with harvest. Sixty-two per cent of winter wheat, 15 per cent of peas, five per cent of lentils and four per cent of barley and mustard have been com-

bined. Nine per cent of canola and mustard has been swathed. Harvest is furthest ahead in the southeastern part of the province, where producers have eight per cent of the crop combined. Yields are estimated to be above the five- and 10-year averages across all crops, with the exception of lentils and chickpeas. The majority of the rainfall came earlier in the week, and ranged from trace amounts to 102 mm at Tramping Lake. Some other areas reporting significant amounts of rain this week include Bethune (43 mm), Earl Grey (56 mm), Harris

(86 mm), Rosetown (62 mm), Landis (77 mm), Alvena (52 mm), Hafford (50 mm) and Nipawin (49 mm). Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 24 per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate and two per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 10 per cent surplus, 82 per cent adequate and eight per cent short. Crop districts 7A and 8A are reporting that 53 and 57 per cent, respectively, of cropland have surplus topsoil moisture. Producers may have difficulty accessing fields due to all the rain, and other fields may be too

soft to support harvest equipment. The majority of last week’s crop damage was caused by excess rain and lodging. Producers are busy with harvest and haying. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

family physician or nurse practitioner as soon as possible for assessment. Pertussis can be prevented by a vaccine given in childhood and in grade eight. As a way of protecting infants, especially those below the age of six months, the vaccine is also provided to caregivers of infants up to six months of age. “I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to ensure that your children’s vaccinations are up to date,” says

Medical Health Officer, Dr. Ashok Chhetri. “If you are a caregiver of a young infant and wish to arrange immunization, or if you need more information about pertussis, please consult your local Public Health Nurse.” The pertussis germ is spread very easily by infected people when they cough, sneeze or have close contact with others. Pertussis can easily spread from person to person, especially among people of the same household, school or daycare.

space. Today I will address the ease of setting up a productive garden in your home to provide additional groceries for your plate and I’m sure you will gain even more joy in your home as a bi-product. First off, I always focus on the provision of food, because it is already hard to afford it. So if you have to invest hard earned dollars, you are not likely going to do that just for flowers you want. In a down economy, flowers are nice but food is essential. Start by finding a few florescent lights and set them up in a fairly ventilated area like a spare bedroom or space in your basement. I have bought simple lights at any local hardware store for $35 and have 3-4 setup. There needs to be air flow and having a small fan will simulate wind on the plants which is good for preventing mold and strengthens the stems. Use anything you have as a container to hold the soil and plant. I like to use trays as I can plant a lot of mixed greens to

make big salads or lots of radishes or beets. Try to grow things that won’t take long and that you will actually eat. A unique item we build and sell are vertical potato growers, that just sit in your basement and will grow spuds year round for pennies. Basically, you have to keep your house warm anyway so with a few simple lights you can enjoy a lush green garden of any size you can fit. When is produce the most expensive? Winter. An indoor garden will easily justify the investment not to mention your heat bill with savings on your grocery bill. Take this challenge and grow healthy food in a corner of your basement. This is a basic start that will easily make winter less dull and become a worthy hobby. Next week we will step up from basic to deluxe if you want to take this idea to a more serious level. For more info, check out our Facebook page at Problem Solved Alternative or email me at service@myps247. com Benjamin Galay is the owner of Problem Solved Inc., and the owner of Grace Gardens Greenhouses in Stenen.

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay

The end of the outdoor gardening season is underway, which is leading to the next exciting part of the year – indoor gardening! Now I know you are probably in the beginning or middle stage of gathering in your harvest of hard work and bounty, but indoor gardens can continue to be a source of joy and sustenance year round. “But Benjamin, why bother?” Winter is long and having a small green garden can change a long dreary day into a soul filling event. My wife and I enjoy our greenhouses immensely, and you might think the close of the season makes us want to stop, but not so. The indoor garden season is a time to try new plants, or grow varieties that we perhaps want to grow next spring and have fresh food. The benefits are obvious; taste new variety, see new flowers, no bugs, no bending, just lush green plants in a small bright

DEAR DR. ROACH: Three months ago, I slammed the fingertip of my left index finger in a drawer. The fingertip is still swollen and painful. My doctor sent me for an X-ray, and there is no fracture. I can bend it at the joint, but cannot put pressure on the fingertip. I looked online, and read something that said a fingertip crush injury can take six months to a year

to heal, and the swelling may never go away completely. Can this possibly be true? Why does it take so long? Is there anything I can do to help it heal? I can get along OK without using the finger for everyday functioning, but I am a guitar player, and I really need to use that fingertip to play. Is there hope that I will be able to play again someday? I would be very sad to have to give it up. — D.L. ANSWER: Crush injuries to the fingertip often do take months to heal completely, due to the fact that there isn’t a lot of room in the fingertip and that there are many important structures in

the fingertip, and that a little bit of inflammation can cause pain and loss of function for a long time. Fortunately, most everybody does regain complete use of the hand, and I wouldn’t sell your guitar just yet. Think about what Pete Townshend did to his hand, and he’s still a pretty good guitar player. DEAR DR. ROACH: My 18-year-old grandson has just been diagnosed with superior mesenteric artery syndrome. It sounds extremely serious. Would you be able to tell me more? I am very worried. — G.D. ANSWER: The superior mesenteric artery is

one of the critical arteries that supplies blood to the intestines. Directly underneath the SMA is the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. In SMA syndrome, loss of the normal fat around the duodenum causes the artery to constrict the duodenum, causing a compression of the duodenum and an obstruction to food going through. Serious weight loss due to medical illness, surgery or anorexia nervosa is the most common cause of SMA syndrome. It’s a difficult diagnosis to make, and there is some controversy about what criteria are used for diagnosis.

If weight loss is the underlying cause of SMA syndrome, then nutritional support and weight gain become the primary treatment. Surgery is sometimes necessary. DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about reheating foods in a microwave, and advised against Styrofoam or other plastic containers. What is the best kind of container to use in the microwave? The manual says not to use anything metal. — J.W. ANSWER: Most plastics probably are safe to heat liquids in, but reheating foods can cause pockets of very high temperatures that can partially melt the

plastic and cause the release of potentially harmful chemicals. I recommend using glass or ceramic plates or bowls to reheat food. Many people wrote in to tell me that Dow Chemical’s brand of polystyrene, Styrofoam, is not used for cups. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Jungle Book” (PG) — Director Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Elf”) takes the story out of the safe, cartoony realm of the old animated Disney version, and makes something more solid and intense, while still keeping the lighthearted, optimistic core of the story. The new Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is great, especially in how he’s able to interact with his CG-animal co-stars. You’d think there was real tenderness between him and the bear with Bill Murray’s voice. As an added lure, credits are packed with A-list voicework, including Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson and

Ben Kingsley. It’s not a musical, but some of the familiar tunes have been incorporated in the film (with mixed results). The CG and creature designs are just plain astounding — seeing the monstrous King Louie emerge on screen gave me a real

Set your hard taco shells in between the wells to hold them up while you are filling them. You could even make a bunch of tacos this way and bring them to the table already made! Fun stuff.” — J.D. in Oregon • “To make sure you don’t get any slipped stitches when you are

interrupted while knitting or crocheting, just clip the work at the needle with a clothespin. It stays put, and you can pick it right back up after you are done taking a break.” — C.C. in Arkansas • If you love coffee, you’ll extra-love this tip: Freeze leftover hot coffee that has been slightly cooled. Then, use the ice cubes to cool down a piping hot cup, as a base for coffee milkshakes and in iced coffee drinks so they will not water down. • “I use clothespins clipped to the top of my shower curtain to hang washcloths to dry. When they are dried out, I toss them in the laundry bin. I only do laundry once a week, and if a washcloth sits wet in the laundry bin, it starts to mildew and smell!” — E.L. in New Hampshire Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

parents get him a caretaker (Emilia Clarke of TV’s “Game of Thrones”), who is so gosh-darn cute and high-on-life that she just might get Will to like being alive again. It’s an adaptation of a book I haven’t read, but apparently the author also wrote the screenplay. I didn’t quite get it. Will wants to die rather than be super-wealthy in a wheelchair, and Clarke’s adorability is pushed into overheating. “The Phenom” (R) — A young athlete is quick to rise because of his talent, then quick to fall because of the pushing that brought him there. A tragic motorcycle accident left him paralyzed, causing him to voluntarily travel no more and stick to hanging out in his family’s castle. His

— Jane (Louisa Krause) has been watched over by her big sister Bianca (Eliza Dushku) all her life. Jane has a form of autism, and though she works as an assistant costume designer, she still has difficulty with social interactions and getting massively overstimulated and disoriented in public places. Here comes Jack (Gabriel Ebert), a neurotypical doofy guy who falls for Jane, even as he figures out the struggles that come with her diag-

nosis. The movie strains too hard for preciousness at times, but there is an original and satisfying love story in here.

Man fined for hunting infractions An Indian Head man was recently fined $5,360 in Carlyle provincial court for unlawfully hunting elk in the Kipling area. In December 2015, conservation officers with the Ministry of Environment investigated an incident that occurred southeast of Kipling, where a herd of elk had been shot at. Officers found that a cow elk had been killed and field dressed, while a young bull elk was left to waste. An injured elk calf was also found at the scene and

The Hall of Fame, for any sport, can be a bit of a buzzkill. For one thing, casual followers of the sport could not care less about who a bunch of journalists or insiders choose to venerate in their hallowed halls. I mean, my favorite baseball players growing up were Graig Nettles, Rick Cerone, Mike Pagliarulo and Don Mattingly. They all make my personal Hall of Fame. Know how many of them made the actual Hall of Fame? Zero. Zilch. Nada. That’s fine, however. It’s not like anybody else gets to see their favorite player make the Hall in regular order. Look, we all like and appreciate the superstars ... but when it comes to picking your favorite play-

had to be euthanized.

Information on the crime and the suspect’s vehicles was circulated through SaskTip, which assisted in solving this crime. Lex W. Bartsch, age 43, pleaded guilty to three charges under the Saskatchewan Wildlife Act and Regulations for waste of game, hunting within 500 metres of occupied buildings and unlawful possession of wildlife. Bartsch was

er, you have to kind of skip the obvious favorites. Nobody picks Jerry Garcia as their favorite member of the Grateful Dead and nobody picks John Lennon as their favorite Beatle. Those two picks are implied ... it’s the McCartney, Weir, Harrison, Pigpen picks that separate the real fans from those just passively listening or looking in. Don’t think you’re above it all, by the way ... outside of Cooperstown and Canton, can you name the location of your favorite sport’s Hall of

also suspended from hunting for one year. “Respect for Saskatchewan’s hunting laws is an important component of effective wildlife management,” Ministry of Environment Chief of Enforcement and Investigation Ken Aube said. “In cases like this, the public’s assistance can be invaluable as we work to protect and preserve Saskatchewan’s natural resources.” This is an example of how

Fame? And even if you did your best to follow that sport, let’s be honest ... you can’t match the rabid voraciousness of your earliest years following your favorite sport. Still, there are certain moments that bring us all together, and no other sporting event can come close to matching the Olympics. The same week that saw Michael Phelps win his 21st gold medal also saw the National Football League’s Hall of Fame game canceled due to poor field conditions. This brings me to a seri-

the public can assist in solving crimes through the Turn In Poachers (TIP) program, which is strongly supported by the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF). “Our province’s wildlife laws exist to protect and preserve healthy game populations,” SWF Executive Director Darrell Crabbe said. “People who choose to ignore these rules are stealing opportunities away from legitimate hunters and can also jeopard-

ous point. When I was a kid, my parents used to host “gourmet” dinner parties in the formal dining room that my younger sister and I were never allowed to step foot in on days other than Thanksgiving and Christmas. We understood that it was off limits, but we also understood that it was ready to be used at a moment’s notice. Not so in Canton, Ohio. With a mere 90 minutes to go, the Hall of Fame Game was called off due to unplayable conditions at its newly remodeled

ize future wildlife populations.” If you suspect wildlife, fisheries, forestry or environmental violations, please call your local Ministry of Environment office, Saskatchewan’s toll-free Turn in Poachers line at 1-800667-7561 or #5555 for Sasktel cellular subscribers, or report a violation online at www.saskatchewan.ca/conservation. stadium and football field. Leave it to the NFL to take a game that has just two serious requirements in order to play — a flat surface consisting of 100 yards and two goalposts — and completely blow it. Even the local high school, which planned on playing its games there this season, knew the field was unplayable and made other plans, but not the NFL. Its decision to skip playing the game was met with a collective yawn, once again proving that nobody likes exhibition football games anyway.

Meanwhile, in Rio, despite all the talk of a city on the brink of collapse, things were going pretty well — particularly for the Americans, who as of this writing were dominating the medal count. Every hour, our athletes stand up on top of the podium, their eyes filled with tears of joy as our national anthem plays. Watching them walk up there begs the question: Who needs a Hall of Fame, anyway? Sometimes it’s better to just live in the moment. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Q: I just got my copy of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” and I also can’t wait for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” to open. What else is happening in the Harry Potter world? — Nina F., via email A: NBC Universal just signed a seven-year deal with Warner Bros. for exclusive broadcast and basic-cable rights to the eight “Potter” movies, as well as the three planned “Fantastic Beasts” movies. In a press release, NBC Universal announced: “Through this deal, Universal Studios Hollywood,

Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Japan can explore a range of new opportunities, including fan events, movie screenings, and promotional activities tied to the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise and the upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film series.”

Q: “Casual” is one of my favorite shows, and I already miss it even though season two just ended. Will it be back for another? — Nico T., via email A: Hulu has picked up the dark-comedy series starring Tommy Dewey and Michaela Watkins for a third season. In more Hulu news: “The Path” is in production on its second season, while season five of “The Mindy Project” premieres this fall. Q: First I want to thank you for giving an address to write to for people like me who have nothing to do with computers to have the chance to try to respond to all life has to offer. Please consider me for entry in your contest to win an autographed copy of Victoria Laurie’s “A Grave Prediction.”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have five dogs, varying in age from puppy to senior, and three parakeets, and because of their very different dietary needs, I’m careful about what I buy and what they eat. I’ve seen many more product recalls of pet food than there used to be, even just a few years ago. What is going on? — Daniel, via email DEAR DANIEL: What you’re seeing is the result of the Food Safety

Modernization Act, which was signed into law in 2011. It gave the Food and Drug Administration more authority to improve food safety, including mandating pet-food recalls. Before the law was passed, individual pet-food companies could recall foods at their discretion. Because of this — and because the regulations were finalized in September 2015 — we are seeing a lot more pet products being recalled. For pet owners, this sudden increase is certainly alarming. However, it’s also an indication that some of the new regulations are beginning to work. Companies are complying with the recall mandate, and hopefully the same companies also

are working to improve their pet-food products so that they are safe to eat. As a pet owner, you can help keep the new FDA regulations moving forward. Go to www.FDA. gov and search for “pet food.” There you’ll find detailed instructions on filing a complaint about a pet food, along with information about the latest recalls. If you want to take more direct action, The Association for Truth in Pet Food, founded by Mollie Morrisette and Susan Thixton, is directly tackling product labeling and advocating for owners of pets sickened by manufactured food. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

Victoria Laurie

— Danan California

G.,

Chino,

A: You are very welcome, Danan. I like to give everyone a chance to win cool stuff, especially when it’s an autographed copy of a book by one of my favorite authors. I randomly drew four names to win the four copies of the book I have, and you were one of them! The other winners are Kimberly Fischer (who won via email entry), Lara Baker (Twitter entry) and Kerri Snow-Hugmeyer (Facebook entry). I spoke with Victoria to get the inside track on “A Grave Prediction” and her insight behind having Abby working

with the LA bureau of the FBI: “It’s an opportunity for Abby to explore the possibility of working with people she doesn’t trust and who don’t trust her. It’s not an easy profession, being a psychic; you get a little flinchy. You get a little defensive because you are always prepared for people to think the worst of you, for people to believe that you’ve got a screw loose or, even worse, that you’re a charlatan. It’s that attitude I really wanted to explore in this latest book. I wanted to throw Abby into a situation where she wasn’t trusted and had to prove herself again.” Visit celebrityextraonline.com for my full and

Enjoy a pub fare favorite at home

Certain foods are more popular than others, and chicken tenders certainly fall into the “more popular” category. Few can resist chicken tenders, which make for popular pub fare and great additions to any buffet table at informal gatherings of friends and family. While many people only indulge in chicken tenders when they’re out of the house, this simple, beloved dish can be enjoyed at home as well. The following recipe for “Pecan-Crusted Chicken Tenders with Yogurt Dill Dip” from Michelle Dudash’s “Clean Eating

for Busy Families” (Fair Winds Press) is a delicious, low-calorie alternative to the fried chicken tenders available at many bars and restaurants.

ler-pressed canola oil •1⁄2 cup panko bread crumbs •1 large egg •1 pound chicken tenders, larger pieces cut in half lengthwise

PECAN-CRUSTED CHICKEN TENDERS WITH YOGURT DILL DIP Serves 4

For the dip: •1⁄4 cup nonfat plain Green yogurt •1⁄4 cup light mayonnaise •1 teaspoon lemon juice •1⁄4 teaspoon dried dill •1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder •1⁄4 teaspoon onion powder •1 pinch salt •1 pinch freshly

For the chicken: •1⁄2 cup pecans •1⁄3 cup whole-wheat flour •2 teaspoons paprika •2 teaspoons dry mustard •2 teaspoons garlic powder

•1 teaspoon onion powder •1⁄2 teaspoon salt •1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1 tablespoon expel-

ground black pepper To make the chicken: Preheat the oven to 475 F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Whir pecans, flour, paprika, dry mustard, garlic and onion powder, salt, and pepper in a food processor until pecans are ground to a powder, about 30 seconds. Drizzle in the oil with the motor running, blending completely. Transfer mixture to a shallow dish and stir in the panko bread crumbs. Beat the egg in a second shallow dish and add the chicken tenders, coating them completely.

Transfer each tender to the breading, turning to coat evenly. Arrange the chicken on the prepared pan. Bake until golden brown and nearly firm, about 8 minutes. To make the dip: Stir all the dip ingredients together in a small bowl. Enjoy the cooked chicken immediately with the dip. Note: Chicken tenders come from the undersides of chicken breasts and are naturally portioned into strips, saving you time in cutting them. If you don’t have chicken tenders, substitute chicken breasts cut into 4x1-inch strips.

A tasty take on chicken breasts

Chicken is a versatile food that can be served in various ways. Many cultures have their own unique takes on chicken, and each of those takes gives poultry a distinct flavor. Foodies who want a northwestern United States take on poultry can try the following recipe for “Chicken Breasts with Roasted Red Peppers, Hedgehog Mushrooms and Truffled Cheese” courtesy of Jill Lightner’s “Edible Seattle: The Cookbook” (Sterling Epicure). CHICKEN BREASTS WITH ROASTED RED PEPPERS, HEDGEHOG MUSHROOMS AND TRUFFLED CHEESE Serves 4

For the roasted red peppers: •2 red bell peppers •2 cloves garlic •2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil •Freshly ground black pepper For the stuffed chicken

breasts: •4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts •3⁄4 stick (6 tablespoons) unsalted butter •1⁄4 pound hedgehog mushrooms •3 to 4 ounces truffled cow’s milk cheese •Salt •Freshly ground black pepper •3⁄4 cup all-purpose flour •2 tablespoons olive oil Move the top oven rack so it’s about 5 inches from the broiler element. Preheat the broiler and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the whole peppers on the

sheet and broil, turning them every few minutes, until their skins are entirely charred. Transfer to a bowl large enough to hold them, and cover the bowl with the foil. Allow the peppers to rest for 20 minutes. Uncover the bowl and use a paring knife to remove the skins, stems and seeds, while capturing the juice and flesh in the bowl. Cut or tear the peppers into 1-inch-wide strips. Using the flat side of a large knife, crush the garlic cloves and remove the skins. Add the garlic, olive oil and salt and pepper to taste and allow the roasted peppers to marinate at room temperature for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Preheat the oven to 350 F. If the chicken breasts are large, insert a knife with a 1-inch blade into the center from the end of the breast, creating a pocket. Be careful not to pierce the outside. If the breasts are small, butterfly them out flat, cover with plastic wrap,

and pound flat. Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a small sauté pan and briefly cook the mushrooms until they’re soft, 3 to 4 minutes. Fill the pocket of each chicken breast with a strip of pepper, then some of the mushroom, then the cheese, and repeat until it can hold no more. Close the opening with a toothpick, season to taste with salt and pepper, and dredge in the flour. Melt the remaining 4 tablespoons butter in a large ovenproof sauté pan, add the olive oil, and cook the breasts, turning

Replacing your alarms

(NC) — If you’re like most homeowners, on more than one occasion you’ve found yourself looking around and thinking… “Have we really been in this house that long?” Two devices essential for your family’s safety are smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. These need a refresh every so often. Smoke and CO alarms monitor the air nonstop with advanced circuitry and highly accurate sensors. They even selfcheck themselves continuously to make sure they will be ready should danger strike. As they stand guard over the years they also have to contend with pet hair, dust, cooking grime and other airborne contaminants. So is it any surprise that, whether battery powered or wired into your home’s electrical system, these potentially life-saving devices eventually need to be replaced? To be certain your family is safe, check the age of all your alarms. Look for a date of manufacture sticker on the outside edge of the alarm or, for older models, on the bottom. You may need to unplug or remove the alarm from the ceiling temporarily to find it. Once you know the age, follow the guidelines of the National Fire Protection Association: Replace smoke alarms immediately if they are older than 10 years (or if you can’t find a date of manufacture) and CO alarms if they were man-

ufactured prior to 2009. Canada’s leading alarm manufacturer, Kidde, offers a complete selection of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with the longest lifespan

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance comes to unattached Leos and Leonas who have been waiting for Cupid to target them for far too long. Domestic purr-fection is also enhanced for paired Felines. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You need

– a full 10 years. To keep your family protected, follow these replacement rules whether your alarms are battery powered, plug-in or hardwired.

A nutritious lunch does not have to be boring or cost you a fortune. Making small changes — like planning a lunch with ingredients that also work well for dinner meals — can save you money. Remember, too, that well-nourished children have a greater chance of success at school because they have the fuel and the energy they need to play and learn. Packing your child’s lunch lets you know exactly what he or she is eating. Follow these tips and not only will you save money, you’ll also pack a nutritious lunch that your child will enjoy. 1. Practice good nutrition yourself. Children learn by association —

HOLLYWOOD — Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything) has “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them due Nov. 18. Based on the book by “Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, he plays wizard Newt Scamander, on the run when magical creatures escape during a meeting at the Magical Congress of the United States, which starts an adventure through the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. His next film is the historical thriller “The Last Days of Night, about the legal battle between inventor Thomas Edison and industry giant George Westinghouse to bring electric light to the country. Redmayne plays a young lawyer hired to defend Westinghouse.

you need to be a role model. Talk with them about the benefits of healthy eating. 2. Make your own. Look beyond lunchmeat. Slice your own meat or grill chicken breast and cut it into strips or cubes. Avoid high-priced prepackaged lunches. 3. Send in leftovers. Invest in a good insulated food container to keep food warm. Homemade soup is always a good option. 4. Buy what’s on sale each week and use coupons, then work it into a menu. Use fruits and

Matt Damon A third “Charlie’s Angels film is being written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Auburn, who wrote “Proof (2005), with Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal. “Charlie’s Angels (2000) cost $90 million and grossed $264 million, while “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003) cost $120 million and grossed $259 million. The “threequil will be directed by Elizabeth Banks, who acted in three “Spider Man films, among others, and acted, produced and directed “Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), which grossed 10 times its $29 million cost. Movie theater chains are complaining that the summer films were a huge disappointment. Look at the numbers, and compare 2010’s “Alice in Wonderland, (cost $200 million/gross $1.025 bil-

vegetables that are in season. 5. Buy store brands and compare unit prices. 6. Look high and low — bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves, not at eye level. 7. Plan ahead and have a list when you go to the store. The more time you spend in a store, the more money you spend. 8. A healthy lunch should contain foods from each of the five food groups: Carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Choose whole-grain products like bread, tortillas, pita bread, bagels or wholegrain crackers. These are more nutritious, have more fiber, vitamins and minerals, and keep blood sugar steady for optimal learning. 9. Include the kids in the process and give them choices. Let them help prepare dinner and use the leftovers to pack their lunch. lion) with “Alice Through the Looking Glass cost $170 million/gross $283 million). In Hollywood, if a film doesn’t gross twice its cost it’s considered a failure. Steven Spielberg’s film “BFG (“Big Friendly Giant) cost $140 million and grossed $72 million. “Teenage Mutant Turtles: Out of the Shadows, cost $135 million and grossed $235 million. “The Legend of Tarzan (which Daily Variety predicted would be a big flop) opened the same day as “BFG, but grossed $263 million against its cost of $180 million. Now they’re predicting it will recoup its cost in due time. “Warcraft managed a profit, costing $160 million and grossing $433 million. Melissa McCarthy’s film “The Boss, panned by most critics (it received a 22 percent rating based on 159 reviews from Rotten Tomatoes), cost $29 million but grossed a healthy $78 million. “Jason Bourne is the fifth film in the franchise. “Bourne Identity cost $60 million and grossed $214 million. MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN TWO-WAYS My recipe for Mediterranean Chicken Two Ways doubles as a delicious dinner and a nutritious lunch! It makes six servings: four for dinner and four lunches. •2 cups plain fat-free Greek yogurt •1 tablespoon packed fresh mint or basil •1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped, or 1/2 tablespoon dried dill •1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin •3 cloves garlic, finely minced •1-1/2 teaspoons salt •1-1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper •4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice •1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil •1 teaspoon dried oregano •2 pounds chickenbreast tenders •1 English (seedless) cucumber •2 large ripe tomatoes •4 whole-wheat pitas

lion. The fourth film, “Bourne Legacy, made without Matt Damon, with Jeremy Renner instead, cost $125 million and grossed $276 million. The money saved on Damon’s salary was lost in the grosses; that’s why they met his demands. But they missed out on the title ... it should have been called “Bourne Again!

In small bowl, combine yogurt, mint, dill, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/3 of the garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper. Let stand 15 minutes. Place half of the mixture in a covered container and refrigerate to use for lunch. Use a pie plate to combine 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice, 1-1/2 tablespoons oil, oregano, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, 1 teaspoon cumin and 1/3 of the garlic. Add chicken, turning to coat. Let stand. Heat a grill pan on medium-high. Grill chicken 10 to 12 minutes or until no longer pink in center, turning once. Meanwhile, cut cucumber and tomato into chunks; toss, in large bowl, with the remaining 1/2 teaspoons salt and pepper, and remaining lemon juice, oil and garlic. For dinner: Divide the chicken and salad evenly. Place half of the ingredients in sealed contain-

ers. Transfer remaining chicken to serving plates and serve the cucumber mixture and the remaining yogurt sauce. Sprinkle with the dill. Prepare a side of orzo or couscous, if desired. For lunch: Grill pitas until toasted, turning once. Fill the pitas with the remaining chicken, yogurt sauce, cucumber mixture and dill. Place in a re-usable container in a lunchbox, along with fruit.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), the classification and diagnostic tool used by the American Psychiatric Association for psychiatric diagnosis, several symptoms must be present before a child turns 12 for that child to be diagnosed with ADHD. Part of the difficulty in diagnosing ADHD can be traced to the impulsivity and inattentiveness typical of children under the age of four. Because of that potential for misdiagnosis, parents should resist the urge to diagnose children without having their youngsters examined by a licensed psychiatrist. Parents who are concerned their

Inattention It can be difficult to notice signs that a child is inattentive until he or she enters school, where kids must focus on classroom lessons and homework. But symptoms of inattention may include: • Careless mistakes when performing certain tasks, including schoolwork and chores • Difficulty sustaining attention when playing or performing certain tasks • Difficulty listening when being spoken to directly • Failure to follow instructions • Failure to finish certain tasks, including chores and schoolwork • Difficulty organizing • Unwillingness to engage in activities that require prolonged mental effort

child might have ADHD can look for certain symptoms, which can fall under three main categories: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Hyperactivity Kids can be easily excited, and parents may mistake that excitement for symptoms of hyperactivity. And while children under the age of four tend to be curious and inat-

tentive, some kids begin to exhibit symptoms of hyperactivity as early as preschool. • Excessive fidgeting • Squirming in seats • Leaving seat when remaining seated is required, such as in classroom settings • Difficulty playing quietly • Running or climbing at inappropriate times • Talking excessively

Impulsivity Youngsters who act impulsively may do things without thinking about their actions or words beforehand. While this is common in young children and may not indicate ADHD, frequent impulsive behavior should be discussed with a pyschiatrist. • Frequently provides answers before questions have been completed • Difficulty waiting his or her turn • Frequently interrupts others • Intrudes on others by butting into conversations or games ADHD affects more than 120 million children across the globe. Parents who suspect their children are exhibiting symptoms of ADHD can visit www.chadd.org for more information.

Five lowcalorie snacks

Snacking may not seem like part of a healthy diet, but the right snacks can help men and women fight midday hunger without contributing to unwanted weight gain. The following low-calorie snacks won’t compromise adults’ efforts to maintain healthy weights, and they might prove useful as men and women look for that extra boost during the day . 1. Popcorn: Popcorn is low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber. Popcorn also is high in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that have been linked to reductions in heart disease and certain cancers. Air-popped popcorn that is prepared without any oil is your best option, as a cup of such popcorn may only add up to about 30 calories. Avoid adding salt or butter or purchasing premade popcorn that is heavy on both, as both ingredients can compromise the health benefits of popcorn. 2. Nonfat Greek yogurt: Though it’s not as low in calories as popcorn, nonfat Greek yogurt is still a low-calorie snack that’s high in protein. Nonfat Greek yogurt may have as much as two times the amount of protein as traditional yogurts, and that’s beneficial because protein helps you feel full longer, which should help you maintain a healthy weight and avoid overeating. Nonfat Greek yogurt also tends to have less sugar than traditional yogurts, and its creamy texture gives many people the impression that they are eating something decadent. 3. Hummus: Made primarily from ground chickpeas, hummus is a protein- and fiber-rich snack that has been linked to a host of health benefits, including a reduced risk for heart disease and certain types of cancers. Dip vegetables such as baby carrots into hummus, and you’ll have a low-calorie snack that’s also high in vitamin A and beta carotene. 4. Pistachios: Many people might read the labels of pistachios and be turned off by the fat content. But pistachios are low in saturated fat and high in protein, and a couple dozen pistachios may only amount to about 95 calories. Eat pistachios raw and do not add salt, which can negate their health benefits. 5. Grapes: Grapes might not be as popular as potato chips or other widely available snacks, but they are great sources of vitamin K and are loaded with antioxidants. Grapes are loaded with water, making them a filling snack that can help men and women avoid dehydration. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, one cup of grapes can provide as much as 5 percent of the recommended daily value of dietary fiber despite containing just over 100 calories.
