or such left their country of origin and moved to Canada. These unique “heritage” varieties are a family secret that is unfortunately being lost. The problem is perhaps no one in their family line cares to maintain a garden and carry on the tradition of that seed, or the ways of collecting seed have become complicated for some reason and it always seems easier to just go buy more seed when needed. Keeping these seeds is beyond important, mostly because of the rare quality and flavor that they contain from plants

that you will never see or taste from a grocery store. But gathering seed has even deeper reasons that we will cover in a moment. Here is perhaps a small way I can prove that the process of collecting seed from your garden has unfortunately become too complicated. If I asked how would go about getting tomato seed, what might you answer? Most people would say “Well you dig out the seed and place it on paper towel and let them dry.” Which seed is worth keeping? How do you pull the seed off the paper towel? Isn’t that really time consuming and difficult? The response is usually — I don’t know, I

never really cared to try or bother. Try this; take as much seed guts from tomato, cucumbers, or other vegs and fruit where the seed is inside and place it in a bowl. Let the sludge sit in the sun for about 3 days with wax paper covering it from flies. When a white mold has appeared on the top layer, add a large amount of water, say a liter and stir vigorously then wait for a few minutes. By amazing design the junk will float, also lower down in the bowl will just be water, and only the seed that germinate will sink to the bottom. Pour off the junk and rinse the leftover seed a few times and place on a wax paper. When

this dries it will look just like store bought seed; Try it with a zucchini to test. How about carrots or beets? Simply leave a small row of your ready to harvest roots vegetables in the ground for one more year. They will die through the winter and regrow in the spring but with a much different look. These will produce many pods that will have enough seed for many families. The reason for this discussion is to warn against saying “When I need seed, I just go to the store.” There are methods like these to keep and collect seed that are so easy, and should a time come to need enough seed to live year round, a small packet for $2 will not be enough. I

The benefit of diversifying your RRSP savings When it comes to building your RSP savings, understanding how diversification works is essential. Simply put, diversification means not putting all your eggs in one basket — by spreading your money across different investment products, you create balance and stability. The idea is to choose investments that will not fluctuate in price at the same time. In a well-balanced portfolio, a decline in one investment is usually offset by growth in another. For example, if you decide to invest 100% of your money into an international equity fund, your portfolio would be vulnerable to foreign market fluctuations which could result in big losses. However, if you distribute your money across several types of investments (term savings, bonds, dividend funds, Canadian and foreign equity funds), you increase your chances of getting a good overall return, regardless of market conditions. Basic triple diversification: In this example, portfolio funds are diversified by investment type, investment term length and the origin of the investment: 1. Investment diversification means that your portfolio includes liquidity, fixed-income securities (such as term savings or bonds) and growth securities (equity or equity fund shares). You therefore benefit from investments whose returns and behaviour complement each other. 2. Term diversification is useful in the short, medium and long term. If you have $10,000 to invest in term savings, you can spread this amount in equal parts over 5 years: $2,000 in a security for a 1-year term, $2,000 in a 2-year security, etc. This way, you’ll receive liquidity from a security that has matured, which you can cash in or reinvest. By renewing for 5-year terms with each maturity, you get a better rate.

3. Geographical diversification lets you combine Canadian and foreign securities. You benefit from economic growth, regardless of the continent or country of origin. When you’re ready, your financial advisor can assist you in creating an even more balanced portfolio with these advanced diversification methods: Diversification of economic sectors: These sectors don’t react in the same way to market developments. If you invest in shares, it’s important to distribute your assets among various sectors of activity, such as health care, technology and utilities. If you invest in Canadian or U.S. equity funds, the portfolio mix generally provides for diversification. Diversification of capitalization: When you invest on the stock market, regardless of whether you invest directly or in mutual funds, it may be advantageous to choose growth company securities (small and mid-capitalization) over major company securities (large capitalization). In a given economic situation, they don’t always behave in the same way. Diversification of management styles: Choose funds where some managers are very aggressive, while others are more cautious. The styles complement each other and increase your return potential. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. for insurance products, Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. acts as a National Life Insurance Brokerage Agency.” The provided example is for illustrative purposes only and it is not intended to be nor should be construed or used as investment advice.

Royal Canadian Legion Hall likely to be lost

By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer

A familiar building on Broadway Street in the city faces a very uncertain future. The Alexander Ross branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is in financial difficulty, and the hall has become a money pit of operational dollars, upkeep, and desperately needed upgrades. “The last couple of years we’ve kind of been working in the hole,”

Barry Whitehead, first vice-president of the local branch told Yorkton This Week. “We’re having a hard time keeping up with the bills.” As a result the Legion is actually behind on some of its utility bills. The situation prompted the Provincial Command of the Legion to visit recently to discuss the situation. “They recommended we sell the building and downsize,” said Whitehead. Sept. 14, the local

branch is holding a special meeting to discuss the prospect of selling the Legion, but Whitehead admitted outside of a major benefactor stepping forward they will be selling the hall. “We’ll go someplace,” he said, adding “we’ll probably operate out of here until it’s sold. While day-to-day operations are in arrears, it is the needs of the building moving forward which necessitate the sale, said Whitehead. “It’s probably half a million for repairs,” he

said, citing the need for a new boiler, lights, water heater and most importantly a new roof. “It’s on and on.”

As a result of the red ink, downsizing is under way. Gunner’s Lounge is closed, and with it several groups are out a place to hold their activities, a Saturday afternoon crib group, the city’s only steel-tip dart club, pool group and a spot on the soft-tip dart club tour around the city. Friday Night Beef on a Bun is done.

And while the Legion is still willing to rent hall space, they can’t offer food services, nor guarantee the building will even be standing within a few months. Whitehead said without an injection of cash, or a large influx of new volunteers dedicated to saving the hall, the meeting on the 14th may be little more than a formality. “We just have no choice. We would like to stay here, so the 14th is a very special general meeting,” he said.

Whitehead is not anticipating a last ditch effort to maintain the hall, and expects when the property sells, it is likely the building will be demolished, the location valued more highly than it is in its current condition. But the Alexander Ross branch will not disappear with the hall. Whitehead said they will be looking for space in another building in the city, to host meetings, run the Legion’s Remembrance Day Poppy Campaign etc.

Make sure your child’s vaccinations are up to date protect your children against vaccine-preventable diseases,” Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said. “It’s important to have your children vaccinated on time and on schedule. It provides them with the best protection against highly contagious and potentially serious dis-

eases, such as measles or whooping cough.” There has been a recent increase in pertussis (whooping cough) cases in Saskatchewan. Publicly-funded routine vaccinations are easily available in Saskatchewan at public health clinics (for preschool children) and

through school-based programs (for school age students). Infants and preschoolage children may receive the following free routine vaccinations: Diphtheria Tetanus Pertussis (whooping cough)

Pasture conditions across the province are reported as 17 per cent excellent, 60 per cent good, 20 per cent fair and three per cent poor. As a result of a wet and humid haying season, it is estimated that four per cent of forage acres will be left unharvested, with the majority of those acres being in the westcentral and northeastern regions. MVP Circuit Tournament - year two

September 9, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

The 2016 edition of the MVP Circuit Tournament held at the Fort Qu’Appelle Disc Golf Course Saturday would be a hotly contested affair. After two rounds of the nine tonal course things were deadlocked at 55s, three under par for 18, with local Jack Talsma and Randy Boehm vying for the title. Talsma established the course record for nine with a minus-three 26 on the par 29 course. Rounding out the top card for the afternoon double round was Moosomin’s Chris Istace who shot a morning 60, and defending champion Dan Ashton of Regina with 63. “It was near ideal conditions, and the competition was very close in the

morning,” said Trevor Lyons, Tournament Director with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf, who himself missed the final card throwing 65 in the morning. In the afternoon the fatigue of throwing 36 on the day, even after players headed up town to find lunch at various establishments, showed for almost everyone. Only Ashton among the top card quartet bettered his morning total, tossing a 59, for a plus-six 122 total score. That would pull the defending champ into a tie for third on the day with Istace who carded an afternoon 62 to also finish with 122. Boehm cooled off in the afternoon throwing a 66 to finish a plus-five

little, throwing a 59 to finish the day minus-two on

36 with a 114 total. The win gave the local teacher the championship trophy disc, as well as a bag full of MVP discs. Talsma and Boehm, if they are PADG members, also earned an invitation to the ‘Champions Championship’ tournament to be held in October in Yorkton. The event will see the top two finishers from each PADG recognized event invited to what is planned as a 27- basket event. “This is one of the reasons to belong to the PADG,” said Lyons, who explained the organization represents all courses with 125 km’s of Yorkton. Currently there are 19 courses which are now playable, or with installation expected in the coming weeks.

of cabernet grapes. (Note of interest: “Nyan” is the Japanese equivalent of “meow.”)

Interestingly, fully half of the respondents said that they’d rather have a good night’s sleep than be the recipient of a romantic gesture on what is generally regarded as the most romantic day of the year. And 64 percent said they cared more about getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night than they did about finding a life partner. • Those who study such things say that when

The notion that one can begin anything at all from scratch, free from the past, or unindebted to others, could not conceivably be more wrong.” — Karl Popper

Jack Talsma, left, of Mellville receives the MVP Circuit Trophy Disc for topping the Fort Qu’Appelle Tournament held Saturday from Parkland Association of Disc Golf Tournament Chair Trevor Lyons.

• In American folklore, it’s Johnny Appleseed who is credited with sowing apple trees across the nation. In reality, though, much of the credit can go to the pioneers’ craving for hard cider. • In February, a mattress company conducted a survey of 390 Americans (hardly a comprehensive sample, of course) to determine consumers’ attitudes toward sleep around Valentine’s Day.

Lyons said numbers for this year’s event were down a little from 2015, but he added the good news was that there were Fort Qu’Appelle players. “We know it’s a process. Not a lot of people immediately know about our great sport. So the PADG helps communities set up low cost courses, and then the player base builds oneby-one,” he said. “It may sound clichéd, but one person picks up a disc, hits the course, and finds out they like the sport. They tell a friend and a ripple begins. “Hopefully next year local numbers will be up, and the event will grow.” You can follow the PADG at http://dulok44. wixsite.com/parklanddiscgolf or on Facebook. - Submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf

DEAR DR. ROACH: My pharmacy recommends that I switch to the generic to save a lot of money on each refill, as it’s exactly the same as the brand name. My neurologist is adamantly against this and says that generics vary too much and may not be effective. Who is right? I am paying the much higher amount for the brand name Keppra out of pocket. Also, I only had a couple of seizures years ago — at some point, can’t I wean off the meds? I think my seizures were a one-time event. — N.R.B. ANSWER: Generics

are required to have the same amount of the exact medication as the brand name. Some clinicians feel that some generic medications are absorbed differently from the brand name, and that very small variations in dosage are important. I won’t tell you to ignore your neurologist’s advice, but most people stay just as well-controlled on generic levetiracetam as on brand name Keppra. As far as discontinuing seizure medicine, really, only your neurologist can answer that. It depends on your seizure history, and the results of your EEG and possibly your brain MRI. Most neurologists will consider stopping the medication after one or more years with no seizures, in most cases. DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any

ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? — T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it’s so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother’s breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast cancer, but

this isn’t proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. Readers: Women today have the best chance ever of overcoming breast cancer. To learn more, order the booklet Breast Cancer: Detection and Treatment by writing Dr. Donohue — No. 1101W, 628 Virginia

Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I heard that tuna fish contains a lot of mercury, so intake should be limited. I like solid white albacore tuna. I eat one 4-ounce can per week. How much is safe? — P.W.K. ANSWER: Albacore has relatively high amounts of mercury, and

A11

the recommendation by the Environmental Protection Agency is to limit consumption to three 6-ounce portions per month for women, and three 8-ounce servings for men. You are well within the safe limit. Canned light tuna and canned salmon have much less mercury. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

Four ways to get exercise (NC) — It’s easy to get off track from your daily activity goals. However, accomplishing 30 minutes of exercise per day can be easy with the right motivation and equipment. Here are some easy ways to get your recommended daily exercise, all year long. 1. Dress for the weather. If you enjoy exercising outside, dressing for the weather can make those 30 minutes more enjoyable. Get in that run or walk by wearing a jacket that has warm fabric and stretch. 2. Workout while getting housework done. It may be tempting to hire someone else to do your housework, but these chores can also contribute to your daily physical activity. Cleaning the gutters, raking the yard and removing any leftover plants or weeds in the garden can get the body moving and work up a sweat.

3. Clear up some space. Push that couch and coffee table aside and make your living room or basement a mini gym. There are many workout videos available online to follow, and you can even find one to target a specific body part. All you need is a workout mat and a couple of accessories like a skipping rope, tension band and weights.

4. Exercise while socializing. Instead of inviting friends and family over for a sit-down coffee, take the coffee to-go and head outside for a brisk walk. Not only will you get some social time, but having someone else to exercise with will help motivate you in your exercise goals. For those longer social walks, make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes.

ly cool fight. The movie does a lot, and does it all shockingly well. A new Spiderman (Tom Holland) gets a snappy introduction, and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) makes a great first impression, setting up his 2018 solo movie. All of this corporate synergy doesn’t get in the way of the movie’s serious notes or the coherence of the rather jampacked plot. “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (R) — This mockumentary shows the rise and fall

of a fictional-yet-plausible popstar named Connor4Real (Andy Samberg). His debut album put him straight to the top, to a celebrity lifestyle of idiotic excess. His second release is so insipid that it puts his career into a tailspin that Connor and his hangerson can’t cope with. Samberg, and directors Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, are wellequipped for a stylish and immature send up of modern pop culture. The movie is full of deadon parody pop songs that

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Captain America: Civil War” (PG-13) — The biggest and most impressive Marvel melee to date pits hero against hero in a super-powered political polarization. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) surprisingly supports a new initiative to put superpeople under government regulation. It takes one botched mission, plus a quick review of previous carnage that the Avengers have been involved in (our heroes have leveled some skylines over the past six movies) to make a pretty good case for oversight. Captain America (Chris Evans) leads a resistance to the new laws, and every supe from Ant-Man to Winter Soldier has to take Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. in “Captain America: Civil a side for one real- War”

are so artfully bad you can tell the trio have been doing this together for years. “De Palma” (R) — He came up in the 1960s with the New Hollywood visionaries, directors like Spielberg and Coppola who rescued and redefined American cinema. In this documentary, veteran director Brian De Palma (“Scarface,” “Carrie,” “Dressed to Kill,” “Mission: Impossible,” etc.) tells stories about his projects with the air of a guy ready to impart some truths

from his decades in the industry. Indie directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow put the interview together into one long yarn that any cinephile would pull up a chair and listen to. “The Fits” (NR) — An inner-city tomboy (Royalty Hightower) finds herself drawn from the boxing ring to the part of the rec center where the older girls practice their dance teams. Mysterious seizures start hitting some of the dance girls, confusing or possibly symbolizing the

transition that awaits the 11-year-old protagonist. This is a debut for the star as well as director Anna Rose Holmer, and a very strong entrance for both. By Cindy Elavsky Q: Is it true that they are making a new version of “King Kong”? If so, do you know how or if this will be different from other iterations? — Dave G., via email A: “Kong: Skull Island” will premiere March 10, 2017 on the big screen. This latest version of the action-adventure movie stars Tom Hiddleston (of “Thor” and “The Avengers” fame), Brie Larson (who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Room”), Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Wilkinson, and takes place in the 1970s, focusing on the origins of Kong. Hiddleston’s character, Capt. James Conrad, is the leader of an expedition venturing deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, where you can bet they are going to run smack into everyone’s favorite giant gorilla. But if you can’t wait until March to get up close and personal with the mythical beast, you can head over to Skull Island yourself — that is, the one at Universal Studios Orlando Islands of Adventure. Its new ride, “Skull Island: Reign of Kong,” opened over the summer, and let me tell you that it is exhilarating and actually quite scary. It really does get you primed to want to

Q: I remember hearing talk of a “Lost Boys” movie remake. Any word on that? — Larry T., via email A: Rob Thomas — creator of “Veronica Mars” and “iZombie” — is bringing the vampire cult classic to television over at the CW network. According to “Deadline,” the new series is being envisioned for a sevenseason run, “spanning 70 years, each season chronicling a decade.” With each season, “the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who are like the ‘Peter Pan’ characters who never grow up, remain the same.” There is no word yet on whether the vampires will be all-new characters or a reimaging of the movie-version ones, but seeing how they all died in the end, they’d have to get pretty creative if they are planning to reintroduce them.

September 9, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

My father was born and raised in WinstonSalem, N.C., the perfect place to find a delicious pulled-pork barbeque sandwich. The Piedmont triad area where he grew up is famous for its pork barbeque and highly seasoned, vinegar-based sauces. Pigs are plentiful in that area of the South, so barbeques featuring the whole pig — split open and roasted over a hardwood charcoal fire, or using just the pork shoulder — are popular. After the meat is cooked,

it’s “pulled” off the bone by hand, sliced, shredded or chopped into pieces, mixed with barbeque sauce and served on a bun. Pork shoulders are the front leg of the pig and are fairly inexpensive cuts of meat. The shoulder includes two cuts: the Boston butt, which is a rectangular roast from the upper part of the front leg, and the picnic shoulder. The Boston butt is the cut of choice for pulled-pork sandwiches. Select a Boston butt that has a white-fat cap the family is raring to go. Here are two quick and very easy, yummy recipes that will start any camper off on an active day connecting with the great outdoors.

Whenever we head into the woods for a weekend getaway, roughing it or not, we always love a campfire and cooking on a grill. The outdoor meal we look forward to the most is breakfast. The sun rises early, and

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a couple of stray cats that I put out food for each day. They must live in the woods behind my house. I’ve tried to lure them inside so I can take them to the vet to get spayed or neutered, but they’re too wary for that. Ultimately I’d like to take them in as pets. Is that realistic? — Gary in Tampa, Florida DEAR GARY: Taming a feral cat — and these two appear to be feral from your description — is really unlikely. The fact that they come around for food at the same time every day is pretty good, but I don’t think you’ll ever get them to the point where they will be relaxed, indoor cats. However, getting them spayed or neutered is a good idea. So how do you manage to do that when they won’t come inside?

FRENCH-TOAST ROLL-UPS Makes 2 servings (6 roll-ups) •1 egg •2 tablespoons milk •Pinch of salt •6 slices soft bread, First, you can contact the local shelter or a veterinarian to find out if this is feasible. For example, a university study in central Florida lasting several years looked at the local feral cat population, as well as the effects of a trapand-release program in which cats were spayed or neutered and released back into their roaming territory. A similar program could be available in your area, although you may need to trap the cats yourself (by luring them into a live trap with food, for example) and bring them in for treatment. Bringing feral cats into a household with tame housecats can be a recipe for disaster. Territorial spats, potential diseases and other problems could quickly arise. For now, feeding these cats and trying to get them medical care to keep the feral cat population from growing is a good thing to do.

and is marbled with fat throughout the meat. The fat and the collagen (the connective tissue) “baste” the meat as it melts away. The collagen also turns into simple sugars that make this typically tougher cut of meat moist, tender and flavorful as it slowly cooks. Pulled-pork barbeque sandwiches were used to entice potential voters to attend political rallies. These flavorful sandwiches definitely have my vote. This crockpot recipe for pulled pork is perfect for anyone who can’t barbeque the traditional way. Serve the pulled pork with a scoop of coleslaw on the sandwich or on the side, along with some baked beans, corn on the cob and sweet, lemon-flavored iced tea, and you’ll have the makings of a Southern-style barbeque

Whisk together egg and milk in a shallow bowl. Add salt. Spread a slice of bread with butter, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, then roll up and seal ends by pinching the bread slightly. Roll it in egg batter. Carefully poke a roasting stick through the roll-up at its midsection. Hold the stick over coals until all sides are lightly browned, about 1-1/2 minutes on each side. Remove from the stick, set on a plate, sprinkle with more cinnamon and sugar, if you wish, and serve with syrup. Or, let it cool a bit on the stick, remove with your fingers and dip in the syrup. STUFFED BAGELS Makes 4 servings

vinegar •2 tablespoons prepared mustard •2 tablespoons brown sugar •1 teaspoon salt •24 hamburger buns Place half the onions in the crockpot. Add the meat and then the rest of the onions. Pour the salsa and the water over the pork and the onions. Turn the crockpot to the HIGH setting for 4 to 5 hours or on the LOW setting for 7 to 9 hours or until the pork is tender and can be shredded easily with a fork. Remove the pork and onions from the crockpot and discard any of the remaining liquid and accumulated fat. Let the meat cool slightly. Shred the pork, using two forks. Mix together the barbeque sauce, vinegar, mustard, brown sugar aluminum foil, and place on a grill. Heat about 3 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Unwrap and serve for breakfast, or leave wrapped and serve as a midday snack. (Keep chilled until serving.) TIP: Make a hand protector for young campers to use when roasting. Poke a hole in the middle of a disposable foil pie plate, and insert it onto the middle of a toasting stick. To identify one another’s sticks, children can decorate their pie plate with designs

and salt until well-combined. Mix the shredded pork and onions with the barbeque sauce. Return the barbequed pork to the crockpot and cook on HIGH for another hour. Serve about 1/2 cup shredded pork in each roll. Top with coleslaw, if desired. Serves 24. HOLLYWOOD — Tom Cruise, who has “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” opening Oct. 21 and will show us his “Mummy” next year on June 9, has changed the name of his next film, “Mena,” to “American Made.” Cruise plays a TWA pilot recruited by the CIA to counter emerging communist threats in Central America, which embarrassed the Reagan White House when the IranContra scandal became public. It was slated for a January release, but has been moved to Sept. 17, 2017. “Mary Poppins Returns” probably will have the original Mary, Julie Andrews, and Dick Van Dyke in the sequel. Plans are to integrate them with Emily Blunt, the new Mary Poppins, and Lin Manuel-Miranda (from the mega-hit musical “Hamilton”). Rob Marshall will direct, as he did in 2002 with the $307 million earner “Chicago” (13 Oscar nomination and six wins, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones) and 2014’s “Into the Woods” (three Oscar nominations, no wins), which made $213 million. “Mary Poppins Returns” debuts on Dec. 25, 2018. Tom Hanks, who has “Sully” (directed by Clint Eastwood) due Sept. 9, and “Inferno,” the “Da Vinci Code” fourquel, on Oct. 28. He’s currently producing and acting in the sci-fi film “The Circle,” with Emma Watson, John Boyega and Bill Paxton, while also producing “Felt” with Liam Neeson, Diane Lane and Tony Goldwyn. Don’t believe what you see in those tabloid headlines at the supermarket. They say Hanks and wife Rita Wilson are headed for divorce, but they’re very much together, as is Tom Selleck and his wife, Jillie Mack. The headline read, “Tom Selleck’s heartbreaking divorce.” I turned to the two-page centerfold to find it was about his divorce from his first wife, Jacqueline Ray, whom he married in 1971. I took pictures at their wedding, and Tom adopted her son Kevin as his own. The tabloid

Christian Slater further claimed that Tom abandoned her when he moved to Hawaii to shoot “Magnum P.I.,” which also is untrue. They were separated long before that and parted on the best of terms, raising Kevin together. A judge has dismissed a $20 million slander lawsuit against Christian Slater, currently starring in season two of “Mr. Robot.” Christian was sued by his father, Thomas Knight Slater, for “slander, libel, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage and invasion of privacy.” (Christian had told an interviewer his father was suffering from schizophrenia). I knew his father, who acted under the name Michael Hawkins in the soap “Ryan’s Hope.” In fact, I took pictures at Christian’s 6th birthday party, and his father arranged for William Shatner to stop by because Christian was a big “Star Trek” fan. I must admit when I met up with Michael years later in Hollywood, he seemed a little strange. They do say you’re never alone when you’re a schizophrenic.

CHINESE FIVE-SPICE GRILLED CHICKEN Lots of flavor from just a few ingredients makes this a cinch for outdoor or indoor grilling. •1/4 cup dry sherry •1 tablespoon Asian sesame oil •1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder •1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne) •1 cut-up (8 pieces) chicken (about 3-1/2 pounds), skin removed from all but wings if you like •1/3 cup hoisin sauce •1 tablespoon soy sauce •1 teaspoon sesame seeds

run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, turning pieces over once and removing pieces to platter as they are done. In small bowl, mix hoisin sauce and soy sauce. Brush hoisin-sauce mixture all over chicken and return to grill. Cook 4 to 5 minutes longer or until glazed, turning once. Place chicken on same platter; sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serves 4. • Based on individual serving: 350 calories, 15g total fat (4g saturated), 41g protein, 10g carbohydrates, 121mg cholesterol, 595mg sodium, 0g fiber.

In large bowl, stir sherry, sesame oil, fivespice powder and ground red pepper. Add chicken to spice mixture and toss until evenly coated. Cover bowl and let stand 15 minutes at room temperature, turning chicken occasionally. Prepare charcoal fire or preheat gas grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. Place chicken on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook chicken 20 to 25 minutes or until juices

LOW-AND-SLOW RIBS WITH ASIAN SALAD You’ll need eight hours to slow-cook pork spareribs (on low), but the reward for your patience is delectable.

General Employment

General Employment

•3-1/2 pounds pork spareribs •1 cup teriyaki glaze (see Tip) •1 (12 to 14 ounces) English (seedless) cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced •1 bag (10 ounces) shredded carrots •1/4 cup seasoned rice

vinegar In 4-1/2 to 6-quart slow-cooker bowl, place ribs and teriyaki glaze, spreading teriyaki to coat ribs on all sides. Cover slow cooker with lid and cook as manufacturer directs on low setting 8 hours or on high setting 4 hours. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir cucumber, carrots and rice vinegar until blended. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes 4 cups salad. To serve, transfer ribs to cutting board; cut into portions. Skim and discard fat from cooking liquid. Arrange ribs and salad on dinner plates. Spoon remaining liquid over ribs. Serves 8. Tip: We got luscious stick-to-the-ribs results using a thick teriyaki glaze (such as Kikkoman’s Teriyaki Baste & Glaze) rather than a thinner sauce. • Each serving: About 390 calories, 22g total fat (9g saturated), 26g protein, 18g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 89mg cholesterol, 1,185mg sodium. If there was one consistent takeaway for America from these past Olympics it is that: 1) we have the best athletes (and sport outfitters) in the world, and 2) yeah, we’re more than just a little bit insane. I know where you think I’m going with this ... that

I’m going to bring up the Ryan Lochte “situation.” I am, of course, but only for a brief moment. Ryan Lochte is a dunce. Now, before you say it’s not nice to name call, let me also call out Usain Bolt. He is great. Also let me state that Michael Phelps is a freak of nature and broke records that had stood since ancient Greece. Carmelo Anthony has won three gold medals, and Coach K has lost only one game ever in Olympic play.

That’s incredible. You want name calling? Just how many kids are going to be named Simone after these Olympics? Yep, America won the eagle’s share of the gold, and pretty much lapped the competition. For Russia, this was a particularly humiliating Olympics. It’s one thing to implement state-sponsored cheating, it’s an entire other thing to get completely nailed for it, too. The Olympics are actually great places to

call names. Everyone knows that there is a tradition at the end of the games to proclaim them as “the best ever,” even if it didn’t happen in Atlanta or Rio, I think. In Atlanta, we received an “attaboy” sentiment, and I believe Rio was simply told they were “magnificent.” Whether or not that was a good thing is for Rio to figure out. One thing we have figured out is the art of storytelling. Every Olympics, the pre-match bios get more and more

Save time and stress

(NC) — Let’s face it, between work and school it’s easy to fall out of your healthy eating routine. When calendars get filled with everything from hockey to errands, sometimes we turn to quick solutions, but needing something in a hurry doesn’t mean you have to turn to fast food. Becel margarine has recipes and tips to help make meal prep for the week both heart healthy and easy.

It can take less than 20 minutes to prep meals for the whole week, not including cooking or baking time. Keep these three useful tips in mind: Know your fridge: When it comes to meal prepping, you don’t need to have all meals perfectly mapped out — simply take 10 minutes prior to a grocery run to make note of what’s missing from your fridge that you need for the coming week. Don’t forget staple items like margarine with simpler ingredients. Did you

know it can replace butter 1:1 in any recipe? And it’s versatile for cooking, baking, grilling and more. Sunday packing: After a weekend grocery run, take time to pack weekly lunches on Sunday — you can even use leftovers for weeknight dinners. Stock the freezer: If you’re slow-cooking chicken or pot roast, try making a bit extra and toss the leftovers in the freezer for future meals. You can even “upcycle” leftovers to create delicious sandwiches for lunches. Try this quick, easy and delicious recipe as your first step in makeahead meal prep, as well as to make the most of fall’s harvest vegetables: GLUTEN-FREE TURKEY QUINOA MEATLOAF Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 50 minutes Makes: 8 servings • 3 tbsp (45 mL) Becel Buttery Taste margarine

with simpler ingredients – no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives – made from blends of plant and seed oils • 10 ounces (300 g) cremini mushrooms or white mushrooms, finely chopped • 1 medium zucchini, finely chopped • 1/2 cup (125 mL) sweet onion, finely chopped • 1 lb (500 g) lean ground turkey • 1/2 cup (125 mL) quinoa, cooked according to package directions (about 1 cup cooked) • 4 slices gluten-free sandwich bread, processed into crumbs • 1 cup (250 mL) nosalt-added tomato sauce, divided • 1 large egg • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp (15 mL) firmly packed dark brown sugar • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt Preheat oven to 375°F (176°C). Melt margarine in

large nonstick skillet and cook mushrooms, zucchini and onion, stirring occasionally until vegetables are starting to brown and tender, about 8 minutes. Let cool. Combine mushroom mixture with ground turkey, cooked quinoa, bread crumbs, 1/2 cup (125 mL) tomato sauce, egg and pepper. Form mixture into loaf and arrange in shallow roasting pan. Bake 40 minutes. Blend remaining tomato sauce, brown sugar and salt in small bowl. Brush top of loaf with tomato mixture and return to oven until meatloaf is thoroughly cooked, about 8 minutes. Recipe tip: Cut the meatloaf into single-portion servings and store in plastic bags or containers to pack for lunch or prepare in a hurry. Nutrition information and more recipe ideas can be found online at becel.ca.

“Million Dollar Baby.” Just once I would like the story of an Olympian to be boring and with no compelling backstory at all. It would really be something to see a b-roll of some kid who simply grew up in Middletown, Wherever, and carried a C or B average through high school, but one day found out he was really fast ... or a really good shot ... and by accident, he tried out for the games and came in seventh. We never hear those stories. Of course, it also wouldn’t hurt if the press would stop with all the “displaced resident” stories. Look, we get it ... the powers that be aren’t going to bulldoze the mansions owned by the richest people in the

ritziest part of the city to build a stadium that will be useless in two weeks’ time. Is anyone shocked to learn of this? Every year, the reporters write about government spending on infrastructure, how pollution is atrocious, how everyone that dips a toe in the water will contract syphilis, and come dusk, will be eaten alive by headshrinking mosquitos. Sometimes you just have to let the simple ideas win out. We were watching people, athletes, run and jump and play games for their country, and that simple thrill should be enough for us all.
