if you don’t believe it’s possible, then you are right. Which will cause all kinds of motivations and convictions to occur: if growing my own food and storing it in a manner as to avoid spoilage or just to save money — is not going to have a profound result, then why bother? Of course accomplishing this goal of “living off the land” requires a lot of work and planning and might I say; belief. If a farmer plants a field of canola or oats, what you are watching him say is, “It’s all going to be rotten.” Wrong. He
has done a lot of work and research to ensure the land, the seed, the equipment, the timing and more are in favor of a good result. Other than some factors that are seemingly out of his control (weather, pests), he believes that his crop will develop properly and therefore makes the move to plant seed. So if by virtue you were equipped with information about living off the land, and that yes it is possible then you also in essence — can make a decision that it is possible or not. So here are some things to consider. For a family of 6 to live year round (there are many factors such as canning, butchering, breed-
ing, collecting seed, storage and obviously a lot of leg work, — so please allow me the grace to present some info without covering everything) it has been studied that in order for a person to consume over 2500 calories a day (average amount needed to work and function) you would need up to 2 acres per person. This land space will produce fruits, vegetables, grains, milk, honey and meat. I have heard arguments that space needed is much higher when involving cattle, which need a large amount of space to graze (about 4 acres). But this is not the only source of meat or milk than can

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay Several months ago I read an article in an agricultural forum. The article was stating that it is impossible to live off the land year round (gathering all the food you are going to eat from your own land), and to believe otherwise is folly. First of all, I have not accomplished this task in my own life, so don’t feel judged or read this as “I have made it, so can you!” Rather I saw it as a deeper root of a problem;

be had, but in a scope the average family of 6 will need 12-15 acres of land. The average family of 6 spends $6,000 - $10,000 on groceries to achieve that same amount of calories in their diet. This requires that you must still work, but rather than growing the food and handling it, you must earn cash to pay for it. Sit down and plan out what sources of food you would love to have, how much each person would want to eat (such as honey) and break down how much space, seed, and supplies are required to grow the amounts calculated. Not everyone has 15 acres, but consider renting just an acre. You may not have a year round sup-

Become tax-savvy with your investment dollars
ParklandMall_3x65.j16_R0011301118.indd/prod2/kj Congratulations, you made it. You survived the debt temptations this summer season, achieved your personal best in RSP contributions this year and only had to pay a small amount in your tax return. Now you can relax until the wholeYTW headache starts 14/16 again in aMP few months. But what f/c if you could avoid the hassle with a plan that could Sept. Sept. 16/16 help reduce your next end-of-year tax bill? For example, when it comes to your registered accounts like an RRSP or a TFSA, your main goal is growth and/or to protect your investment. These are tax deferred or tax free instruments so there is no immediate concern about the tax implications. It really comes down to whether you choose to invest your money outside of your registered accounts. Making money is easy. Keeping it can be the tricky part. And that’s why it matters how you invest. To illustrate this point, here are three general tax treatment examples for an individual with an annual income of $85,000 and earning $1,000 of investment income in three different types of investments (using 2015 marginal tax rate for Saskatchewan – Source: Ernst&Young): Earned interest If you earned $1,000 in interest income from a bond or GIC, you have received the most tax inefficient income. At tax filing time, this full amount would be taxed at your marginal tax rate. The taxes on your interest will be calculated like this: $1,000 x your 35% marginal income tax rate= $350, which would leave you with only $650 in interest.
Laurie Renton Justine Lutz Financial Advisors LR Future Insurance and Investments #7 Broadway Street W. Yorkton, SK S3N 0L3 Phone: 306.783.7737
Dividends Dividend income receives favourable tax treatment. The reason for this is because it represents after-tax corporate profits which are distributed to shareholders. If you earned $1,000 in corporate dividends, the tax payable is 1,000 x 12.39% special dividend income tax rate = $123.90 Therefore you would be left with $876.10 in dividends, an extra $226.10 in your pocket compared to interest income. Capital gains Most people are familiar with the concept of buy low, sell high. The goal of selling high is to make a profit — or a capital gain. For instance, if you bought some stock or real estate and made a $1,000 profit, your capital gain would be $1,000. Our tax system only requires you to pay tax on half of the gain. So, your $1,000 gain becomes $500 for tax reporting purposes: $500 x 35% marginal tax rate = $175. Therefore your $1,000 gain leaves you with $825 after tax, an extra $175 compared to interest income. While these are very general examples, it’s always important to sit down with a financial advisor to discuss what’s best for you. Remember, creating a solid plan can be your most valuable tax-efficient tip. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. for insurance products, Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. acts as a National Life Insurance Brokerage Agency.” The provided example is for illustrative purposes only and it is not intended to be nor should be construed or used as investment, tax or legal advice.

‘Yorkton’ part of China marketing

The word ‘Yorkton’ has become something of a selling point for a local firm accessing a potentially massive market. TA Foods is now bottling cold pressed virgin flax oil under the label ‘Yorkton Flax Oil’. The label is for a particular distributor who is selling the product into the Chinese market. “It’s one new label specifically for China,” said Michael Popowich, vice-president at TA Foods. Popowich said Canadian products are trusted in China for quality, and the label simply
label specific to the city and of course country, to build on the already established trust of consumers there. The selling point of being a product from Canada “is a big part of it,” in terms of attracting Chinese consumers, he said. And attracting those consumers is a growing part of business for TA Foods. “It’s a growing market for us for sure,” said Popowich, adding the entire Pacific region shows potential, although China leads the way. Popowich noted the Chinese economy has slowed, but the sheer
size of the market, for a product such as flax oil, still makes it lucrative in terms of export potential. He noted a single large Chinese city would be potentially the same market size as all of Western Canada. “It’s potential, it’s definitely the biggest one,” he said, adding the health aspects of flax oil have helped carve out a market niche even as the economy there has slowed. As it stands about 85 per cent TA Foods’ business by dollar value heads to export markets, with about half of those exports headed to the United States and half to countries in Asia, said
Popowich. The challenge though is building a market which is half a world away. Popowich did note when it comes to their products TA Foods are doing everything here in Yorkton, from crushing the flax seed to extract the oil, to bottling the oil, to distributing it to markets worldwide. To help facilitate those efforts the firm recently purchased the former Western Grocers building on Broadway Street in the city to use for warehousing, in particular the on-site cold storage for the oil. Popowich said the company will not utilize
the entire space, so they will be providing warehousing for other businesses as well. The need for additional space reflects on the growth of TA Foods, which was recognized in 2015 when the firm was presented the ABEX award for Growth & Expansion Award by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. This year TA Foods are finalists for two ABEX awards; Export, and Priority Focus. Priority Focus is the newest ABEX category and in its second year. The award is presented to a business which has gone above and beyond in demonstration of busi-
Saskatchewan producers made good progress with harvest, thanks to a week of primarily dry weather. Thirty-two per cent of the crop has been combined and 38 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. This is ahead of the five year (2011-2015) average of 28
per cent combined for this time of year. Regionally, harvest is furthest advanced in the southeast, where producers have 48 per cent of the crop in the bin. Forty-two per cent of the crop is combined in the southwest, 24 per cent in the east-central region, 25 per cent in the westcentral region, 22 per cent in the northeast and
14 per cent in the northwest. Ninety-four per cent of winter wheat, 85 per cent of field peas, 65 per cent of lentils, 26 per cent of durum, 23 per cent of spring wheat and 17 per cent of canola have been combined. Yields are estimated to be above the five- and 10-year averages for most crops, with the exception
of lentils. After several dry days, rain showers rolled through the province again on the weekend and have continued into this week. Precipitation amounts ranged from nil to 30 mm (Raymore area). Areas in the west-central, northwestern and northeastern regions did not receive as much rain as the rest of the province. The Lampman area reported receiving 24 mm, Langenburg 19 mm, Glenavon and Debden 12 mm and Sonningdale eight mm. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 10 per cent surplus, 84 per cent adequate, five
per cent short and one per cent very short. The areas around Kindersley and Tisdale have surplus moisture on 27 and 48 per cent, respectively, of cropland. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 85 per cent adequate, nine per cent short and two per cent very short. Crops are being downgraded because of weathering in the field and higher levels of disease

ness excellence, in an area that mirrors a select Saskatchewan Chamber policy priority. This year the focus is on immigration.
Popowich said immigration has certainly been important to the firm with 17 or its current 22 employees coming to Canada from the Philippines. He noted that they started with half a dozen immigrant workers a few years ago, and those workers have helped provide key contacts when additional personnel were required.
Hopefully we’ve been good to them and they’ve been great for us,” he said.
A third of crop now in the bins
Renewed investment The Government of Saskatchewan has announced a renewed investment of $800,000 for the Culture on the Go program (CoGo). The funds will be divided between Creative Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Arts Board and distributed as grants to Saskatchewan artists for eligible projects. “We are pleased to continue our support of Saskatchewan’s artists and performers,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “Culture on the Go helps make it possible for them to further their careers and share their art, music or performances with people in-province, outside of the province or internationally.” Working in tandem, the Saskatchewan Arts Board will fund projects that will increase access, grow audiences and build a greater appreciation for the arts, while Creative Saskatchewan will focus on the commercial side, providing
grants to help individual performers, groups and businesses attend events where market interest has been established and where it has the potential to grow. In both cases, CoGo helps build awareness of Saskatchewan artists and the province’s cultural industry. Since the CoGo program was launched, it has helped the province’s community arts organizations and schools present shows in their communities that have been enjoyed by thousands of Saskatchewan residents. The program has also helped Saskatchewan artists, performers, writers, publishers, dancers and actors reach receptive audiences and new markets for Saskatchewan cultural products around the province, across Canada and internationally. Since it began in 2009, more than $7 million has been invested in the program.

a 50 percent effectiveness rate (which is pretty good for this difficult-totreat condition).
DEAR DR. ROACH: In discussing treatment of nail fungus, you did not mention newer laser treatments that I see advertised by podiatrists in my area. Are they effective? — J.F. ANSWER: We don’t really know if they are effective, since welldone studies haven’t yet proven it; however, preliminary evidence is suggestive. This would be a great addition to treatment, since the only currently accepted highly effective treatments are oral medications, which have risk of liver damage. Even more exciting is the idea of combining a topical antifungal agent, amorolfine, with laser. This medication is not available in the U.S., but a study in Korea showed
Since I last wrote about this condition, I heard from a lot of readers. Some mentioned cures from Vicks VapoRub, but the only study I found on that showed a 22 percent cure rate. One person asked about surgery, but since the fungus gets into the nail bed, the infection often recurs after removing the nail. Listerine and white vinegar mixed half and half cured one couple, and several people had success with Dr. Paul’s Piggy Paste, which also is vinegar-based. None of these has good data to support its use, but all likely are safe. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old and have been dealing with a problem for about a month now that I’ve never read about in your column. The upper joint in my left thumb pops every time I bend it. The lower thumb joint is tender, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to grasp things.

The thumb never gets stuck. My right thumb pops only occasionally, and there is no pain there. Can you please tell me the cause of such an anomaly, and the type of doctor that I should be seen by? I am very active, and this has become a bit bothersome. — C.G. ANSWER: If it’s not getting stuck, then the popping sound can be made by one of the tendons snapping over a bony protuberance, or
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As the flood waters in Louisiana recede, shelters there are calling for assistance in caring for pets that were lost or abandoned when residents fled their homes. I want to help, but I feel a little insulted that many charities are just asking for money up
it can be from nitrogen bubbles coming out of solution. Neither of these usually causes much trouble, but the fact that you are having pain suggests that you may have some arthritis in the thumb joint. A rheumatologist is the expert in all joint matters, but your regular doctor probably has a fair bit of experience with this as well. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 74-year-old male with a breast issue. When
I press on the nipple or around it, I feel pain. It has been seven weeks, and no change. I can’t say I feel a lump, but it does seem harder under the nipple compared with my other breast. I did not bump or bruise it, and I see no marks or discoloration. — R.F.C. ANSWER: You should go and get it checked out right away. While breast cancer in men is uncommon, it does happen, and the sooner it is evaluated,

with donated goods like old blankets, newspapers, unopened pet food and new toys. It’s important to check with them first — visit their website for a list of needs, and follow up with a phone call to confirm their list is up to date. They also like cash, too.
DEAR GREG: While the seemingly constant emails and TV spots asking for money to help shelter animals can be annoying, there are some very good reasons why cold hard cash is often the best option — particularly in large-scale disasters. First, shelters in a disaster area — and national organizations like the American
They don’t have time to sort through random donated items to find a few usable things. (For example, shelters don’t use clumping cat litter because it’s a health issue for kittens.) With cash donations, these organizations can buy exactly what they need and get it delivered quickly. Now, local shelters in your area may be OK

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I was really into this show on PBS called “Indian Summers,” which takes place in India in the early 1900s. Will it be back for another season? — Gigi R., via email A: Masterpiece will continue the story of love, death and unbridled ambition set in British India’s exotic summer capital in the 1930s. Starring Julie Walters, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Nikesh Patel and Jemima West, “Indian Summers” returns for its second season with 10 new episodes starting Sept. 11 at 10 p.m. and running through Nov. 20. (The show will be pre-empted on Oct. 9 by the presidential debate.) New cast members include Art Malik, Rachel Griffiths, Blake Ritson and James Fleet. Each episode will be available to view online at pbs.org/masterpiece beginning the day after broadcast for a limited time. Q: Since Donald Trump is running for president, I just assumed that “Celebrity Apprentice” had been canceled, but my wife says it hasn’t. Can you give me the scoop? Surely he can’t do
Connie Britton this TV show and run for office at the same time! — Daniel F., Lake City, Florida A: You are correct: Donald can’t do both at the same time, which is why he quit the NBC series when he threw his hat into the political ring (although NBC maintains that it cut ties with him first). However, your wife also is correct: “Celebrity Apprentice” will be back — with a new host. Keeping with the celebrity/politician theme, it would seem, the Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has signed on to host a revamped version of the show. Celebrity guests for the Arnold era include: Laila Ali, Brooke BurkeCharvet, Eric Dickerson, Boy George, Matt Iseman, Carrie Keagan, Carson Kressley, Lisa Leslie, Jon Lovitz, Vince Neil, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Kyle Richards, Chael Sonnen, Porsha Williams, Ricky Williams and Carnie

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal and professional relationships dominate this period. Try to keep things uncomplicated to avoid misunderstandings that can cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) That elusive goal you’d been hoping to claim is still just out Wilson. And, like Donald, Arnold will have his own set of advisers, including Warren Buffett, Tyra Banks, Jessica Alba and Los Angeles Clippers owner and former Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer, who each will bring a unique business expertise to the boardroom. Readers: I promised I’d update you on any “Nashville” news, and I have some good stuff to tell you. Season five will premiere Thursday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m. EST on CMT with a two-hour premiere. This season will consist of 22 episodes, with each available on Hulu for streaming the day after it airs. All cast members, with the exception of Will Chase (Luke Wheeler) and Aubrey Peeples (Layla Grant), will be returning. However, as of this writing, Connie Britton, who plays country matriarch Rayna James, has signed on to only 10 of the 22 episodes, with rumors swirling that this will be her final season. But we can rest assured that Juliette Barnes did not die in a fiery plane crash, a la Patsy Cline, since Hayden Panitierre has signed on for all 22 episodes, along with the rest of the cast. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to get away for some much-needed rest and relaxation. You’ll return refreshed and ready to take on the workplace challenge that awaits you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Confidence grows as you work your way through some knotty situations. Watch out for distractions from wellmeaning supporters that could slow things down. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Consider
spending more time contemplating the possibilities of an offer before opting to accept or reject it. But once you make a decision, act on it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’re in a very strong position this week to tie up loose ends in as many areas as possible. Someone close to you has advice you might want to heed. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The new moon starts this week off with some positive movement in several areas. A special person becomes a partner in at least one of the major plans you’ll be working on. BORN THIS WEEK: You work hard and get things done. You also inspire others to do their best. You would do well heading up a major corporation.

A new option in the sustainability realm our practices become watched a little closer and perhaps looked at a bit more critically. Over the years, organizations have tried different methods of helping consumers gain trust in our products. Today, there’s a new game in town. tered producer, you need to fill out a registration form, complete & submit a self-assessment of your operation and then begin keeping records. Cow-calf producers need to have a minimum of 6 months’ worth of records and feedlots need to have 3 months. Once this is achieved, VBP+ will have its auditors come out and visit your place. Thankfully, a full audit isn’t required annually to keep up your verified status within the program. Producers enrolled in the program are placed on an 8 year cycle with Year 1 being the first full on-farm audit. Year 2 requires simply an assessment of your records, Year 3 & 4 consist of self-declarations while Year 5 involves a second records assessment followed by three more years (Year 6, 7 & 8) of self-declaration.
As I mentioned above, this program is going to be key to ensuring we have access to markets in which to sell our product. To find out more information on the Verified Beef Production Plus Program you can visit the website at http:// verifiedbeefproductionplus.com/verification. Saskatchewan’s program is ran by Coy Schellenberg and he can be reached at (306) 8599110 or office@saskvbp. ca.

to a sustainable product. The new program builds upon the initial On-Farm Food Safety program, Quality Starts Here, and aligns with the work being done by the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, which ties in as well with the McDonald’s Verified Sustainable Beef pilot project. Since its beginning, the idea has been to strive for a voluntary, industryled program developed by producers. As such, involvement with the program is relatively easy. Training is offered so as to appeal to all types of audiences; you can attend workshops in person, work at your own pace with online training or listen to a webinar as well as conversing over a phone call. Sustainability - Social License - Consumer Trust - Public Confidence, these seem to be the buzz words in the agriculture and foodie worlds today. Although I’m not sure they can be considered buzz words anymore; I think they are around to stay and unfortunately I don’t think we can simply
ignore them either. We may not get a premium selling products that are “sustainable” but my hope is that our children and grandchildren will have markets to sell their calves into. In our society, people are fortunate enough to not have to worry about simply putting food on their tables; they can make choices about what kinds of food to place in front of their families. For the folks producing that food, this means

HOLLYWOOD — Bradley Cooper is prepping a reboot of the Janet Gaynor (1937), Judy Garland (1954) and Barbra Streisand (1976) starrer “A Star Is Born,” this time with Lady GaGa. Clint Eastwood was trying to get Beyonce to step into the role, but her schedule didn’t work for the film. Cooper executive-produced his films “Limitless” (2011), which cost $27 million
K.J. Carson is a friend of mine. We used to sit in the back of our highschool classes and constantly crack up on the way to our C averages. We had this one teacher who was about 110 years old who used to like to start his lectures with a line from the famous person he would be teaching us about that day. For instance, if he was teaching us about John Kennedy, he might start with “Ask not what your country can do for you ...” The day K.J. and I really became friends was the day that teacher walked in and declared “I am the virgin queen!” I’m not sure if we ever really stopped laughing from that day since. Yeah, we didn’t learn much from that class — and if I am ever asked who
and grossed $162 million; “The Words” (2012), $6 million cost/$13 million gross; “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), $21
million cost/$234 million gross); “American Sniper,” ($59 million cost/$547 million gross) and the recent “War Dogs,” with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. In addition to starring as the fading rock star opposite GaGa, Cooper also intends to make this his directorial debut. All three versions of “A Star is Born” made a profit, especially Streisand’s, which cost $6 million and made $80 million. Given Cooper’s track record as an executive producer and actor, this is a slam dunk for him.
If you’re planning a trip to Hollywood, be careful of the sightseeing tour you choose. Hollywood’s local NBC news conducted a sting operation of tour groups and found that most of the homes they pointed out as belonging to celebrities were a lie. When the busiest tour owner was confronted about lying to tourists, his answer was, “It doesn’t matter, it’s not about reality, it’s about perception!” One of the homes pointed out allegedly belonged to Julia Roberts. Julia Roberts lives in New York, not
Hollywood. The real owner is fed up with 25 tour stops a day and home invasions, and is suing the tour company. Another tourist attraction, the Playboy Mansion, sold for a mere $110 million ($80 million less than the asking price). The new owner wanted to occupy a portion of the estate, but Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy Magazine and 90 years old, wants to be able to live out his days in peace and privacy. The new owner had to back off or lose the deal. I was once invited to a press
the virgin queen was, I will quickly answer “Mr. Reed” — but we did keep a running commentary over the years. K.J. is a burgeoning radio talk-show host. Over the years, we have floated the idea of me phoning in as “the token white guy” on his show (K.J. is black), but we never really saw it through. We’ve talked about doing podcasts for this column, but the furthest that ever got was me designing a nifty graphic for this column’s Twitter handle: @sportingview (be sure to follow ... Pete Rose does!). The other day, he broke his silence on Colin Kapaernick, the soon to be former NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin, as you may know, refuses to stand for the national anthem in protest of
police brutality against persons of color. I personally don’t really care what Colin does on the sideline ... I didn’t know this was even a thing until K.J. opined. “What gives a man the right to tell another man how he should protest a perceived injustice? Our law frowns upon vigilante-style retaliation, and this isn’t even close. I’ve heard and seen some strong language about a guy they don’t personally know. They think they know him because he plays football on TV ... I wish some people would just admit they have a problem with Colin Kapaernick making $19 million a year. It’s not about a flag, or disrespecting soldiers. That’s trying to “dictate” what you believe he is doing instead of “listening” to what he is saying
... unless you don’t want to hear that ... because that’s your right too!” I can only add that it’s fitting to remember what police officers go through every day, too. As a former police-beat reporter and member of a family that has had more than a few cops in our ranks, it is important to remember that these officers are the ones kicking in the door to find your dead grandma in the morning, handling multiple murders before lunch, fighting rape, finding stolen tools (which, believe me, causes murders in
a small town filled with day laborers and drunk and disorderly nights). There is no way to fleck off the instances of police brutality, but you can put me squarely on the side of sane reform. These people signed up to be heroes, and now it’s time to help them out. Whether or not Colin can be helped from here on out is up to him. He went from a standout to someone now remembered for refusing to stand. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

party there and snuck into the famed “Grotto,” where I witnessed several celebrities making love. What a show that was! Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson didn’t want to engage Vin Diesel while they were working together in “Furious 8” (he’s one of the producers and a formidable opponent). Allegedly, Vin often was late to the set, not because he hadn’t arrived — he just wouldn’t come out of his trailer. So Johnson took to Facebook: “Some of my male co-stars are chickens**t and candy asses.” He was confronted by Vin the next day, but they didn’t come to blows because they still have “Furious 9 and 10” upcoming. Talk about being between a “Rock” and a hard place (Vin)!

BUYERS OF SASKATCHEWAN FARM LAND FARMERS VS INVESTORS PART 2 This is the second part of our series on “Who is buying Saskatchewan Farm Land?” This week’s topic focuses on the Distant Farmer Buyer. Distant Farmers, who are based in Canada, may be from in or out of Province. They do not face the restriction of 10 acres or less that is imposed on Foreign Buyers. Their reasons for relocating are many. Often, they are looking for expansion, either for themselves or for family members, and are unable to do so in their current location. This may be due to the high cost of Farm Land in that area or possibly to no land being available regardless of price. As they look at the prospect of relocating Saskatchewan becomes an attractive option with the high amount of good quality arable land that is available and at lower prices. Some are looking for Grain land, some for Livestock land, and others for mixed operations. Yard Sites are generally required, and possibly 2 or more when it is a Family Operation that is moving. While the type of land is an important factor when deciding on where to purchase, so too is the availability of services. These services extend not only to the family, but naturally to the needs of the Farm operation in regards to Grain Terminals, Livestock Markets, Equipment & Input Suppliers, Vets, etc. As the relocation of a Family is a major decision these Buyers are sure to do their homework prior to making such an important move. In addition to the above, soil types, crops grown, rainfall amounts, and more are also taken into consideration. Farming in the World of today is a major business and the property being purchased must be able to show it will pay the bills! Next time we examine the “Foreign Farmer Buyer”.

Harvest Progress
The Crop Turns
Staff Photos by Michaela Miller
Curtis Herndier works into the evening hours on a farm near Neudorf, SK. Due to the damp weather in August, Herndier has since been delayed in his harvesting. Seen here in late August, he combined the dryer portion of his crop.
Harvest moves forward despite weather Saskatchewan producers made good progress with harvest, thanks to a week of primarily dry weather. Thirty-two per cent of the crop has been combined and 38 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. This is ahead of the five year (2011-2015) average of 28 per cent combined for this time of year. Regionally, harvest is furthest advanced in the southeast, where producers have 48 per cent of the crop in the bin. Forty-two per cent of the crop is combined in the southwest, 24 per cent in the east-central region, 25 per
cent in the west-central region, 22 per cent in the northeast and 14 per cent in the northwest. Ninety-four per cent of winter wheat, 85 per cent of field peas, 65 per cent of lentils, 26 per cent of durum, 23 per cent of spring wheat and 17 per cent of canola have been combined. Yields are estimated to be above the five- and 10-year averages for most crops, with the exception of lentils. After several dry days, rain showers rolled through the province again on the weekend and have continued into this week. Precipitation amounts ranged from
nil to 30 mm (Raymore area). Areas in the west-central, northwestern and northeastern regions did not receive as much rain as the rest of the province. The Lampman area reported receiving 24 mm, Langenburg 19 mm, Glenavon and Debden 12 mm and Sonningdale eight mm. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 10 per cent surplus, 84 per cent adequate, five per cent short and one per cent very short. The areas around Kindersley and Tisdale have surplus moisture on 27 and 48 per cent, respectively, of cropland. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four
per cent surplus, 85 per cent adequate, nine per cent short and two per cent very short. Crops are being downgraded because of weathering in the field and higher levels of disease in comparison to other years. There are reports of higher incidences of sclerotinia in canola, fusarium in wheat and durum, and bleaching of cereals and pulses. High winds blew some canola swaths around in the southeast. Producers are busy harvesting and cutting greenfeed crops. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @SKAgriculture.

PM talks about canola while in China Canola has become the unlikely centre of attention coming out of Prime Minister Trudeau’s recent trip to China as Canada and China seek to resolve their looming dispute over canola dockage. According to Great Northern Growers, a Saskatchewan farm chemical company, the dockage issue could be at least partially resolved if the Canola Council of Canada loosened its stance on a popular herbicide. At issue is a chemical known as quinclorac, sold under the brand name Clever, used to treat canola for cleavers, ranked seven of Saskatchewan Agriculture’s top 10 weed list. Although Clever is registered and approved by the federal Pest Management Regulatory Agency, the Canola Council has urged growers not to use it because China has not yet set a Maximum Residue Limit for quinclorac. Likewise, the CODEX Alimentarius, the international standard-setting body of the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is silent on quinclorac. “In essence, the
Canola Council has declared Clever to be guilty until proven innocent. They are saying that unless we can prove that China will not reject canola treated with Clever that we should assume that they will. There is no evidence to support that assumption,” said Ash Skinner, CEO of Great Northern Growers. In the meantime, Skinner noted, what is firmly known is the Chinese policy on dockage. As became widely known after Trudeau’s visit, the Chinese are pressuring Canadian producers to reduce the level of foreign matter in canola exports from the current 2.5 per cent down to 1 per cent. “Although the prime minister won a reprieve, it’s certain that we will still have to negotiate
some reduction in dockage. To achieve that, canola producers will need to use every tool at their disposal. In light of the current negotiations with China, it is simply irresponsible for the Canola Council to continue to stonewall the use of a proven weed fighter like Clever,” Skinner said. Skinner noted that there are no MRLs in place for some of the most widely used canola herbicides, including Edge, Roundup, Pursuit and Liberty.

Pork industry leader congratulated The Canadian Pork Council recently congratulated Florian Possberg on his induction into the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame. Possburg along with five new members were inducted this past weekend at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon. “The Canadian Pork Council, and indeed, the entire Canadian pork industry, has been a major beneficiary of Florian’s skills – analytical, political and
diplomatic – in representing pork producers’ interests at the national and international levels,” says Council Chair Rick Bergmann, “Kindly accept my best wishes to you and your wife Betty for continued success in the years to come.” Florian served as a director of the Pork Council from 2003 to 2013. During much of that period, he also served as a member of the Executive Committee and as a CPC vice-President. His acumen for inter-
national marketing and trade policy was quickly recognized and led to his appointment as a CPC director of Canada Pork international, the industry’s market development arm. With over $3.4 billion in pork products exported to more than 100 countries in 2015, industry leaders like Florian recognize that secure market access can further strengthen the industry by encouraging both a new generation of hog farmers and existing producers to invest in
Canola Council applauds recent trade settlement with China China’s Premier Li Keqiang and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have announced that Canadian canola can continue to be exported to China under the current regulatory regime while officials work to finalize a long-term solution to blackleg concerns in the days and weeks ahead. “This is a significant step towards resolution of this long-standing issue”, said Patti Miller, President of the Canola Council of Canada. “We sincerely appreciate the Government of Canada’s efforts to achieve a science-based solution.” Today’s announcement is a turning point that enables government officials to quickly conclude their discussions. The Canola Council has been supporting technical discussions on the ground in Beijing in recent days. “Canadian and Chinese officials have worked diligently on finding a science-based approach to blackleg risk that will be both
practical and effective,” says Ms. Miller. “With today’s announcement, we encourage both governments to rapidly conclude a science-based agreement that will provide long-term stability.” In 2009, canola exports to China were stopped as a result of concerns over transmission of blackleg to the Chinese rapeseed crop. Exports resumed to designated ports in China with an agreement to conduct joint research to better understand the disease and how risk of transmission could be mitigated. Over the last 6 ½ years the Canadian canola industry has invested millions of dollars in blackleg research. As a result of this investment, research has shown that reducing the incidence of blackleg in Canada will benefit both countries. “Weapplaudtheefforts of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland and Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay,” says Miller. “Their timely interventions mean that a
science-based solution is in sight and that Canada’s most valuable export to China can continue.” Canola seed exports to China have been the single most valuable export from Canada to China over the last five years. In 2015 Canada exported 3.8 million tonnes of canola seed to China, worth $2.0 billion – accounting for 40% of Canada’s canola seed exports. The CCC is a full value chain organization representing canola growers, processors, life science companies and exporters. Keep it Coming 2025 is the strategic plan to ensure the canola industry’s continued growth, demand, stability and success – achieving 52 bushels per acre to meet global market demand of 26 million metric tonnes by the year 2025. The CCC will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the annual Canola Council Convention, March 7-9, 2017 in Winnipeg, MB. their operations. Florian was a lead on a collaborative effort within the industry, where he championed national efforts to deal with emerging diseases. Most recently PEDv, but also many initiatives to preserve Canada’s excellent swine heard health status, notably the development of the Biosecurity Standard. This standard has been incorporated in the Canada Pork Excellence platform (CPE) that serves as the foundation for the Verified Canadian Pork (VCP) initiative launched by CPI earlier
this year. CPE brings together the on farm food safety, biosecurity, animal care and traceability programs under on platform. While there are many other examples of Florian’s accomplishments, it is essential to highlight his leadership of the very successful process to update the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs. The result of that multi-party consultative exercise have met with widespread acceptance and will serve the industry well for many years. The CPC serves as the
national voice for hog producers in Canada. It is a federation of nine provincial pork industry associations representing approximately 7,000 hog farms, producing 25.5 million animals a year and generating over $13 billion in economic activity. The 31,000 farm jobs they create contribute to the total direct, indirect and induced $23.8 billion and 103,000 jobs across the country. The organization’s purpose is to play a leadership role in achieving and maintaining a dynamic and prosperous Canadian pork sector.

FCC report reflects financial stability Canadian farmers are in a strong position to meet their financial obligations, despite plateauing farm incomes and slowing land appreciations, according to FCC’s 2016-2017 Outlook for Farm Assets and Debt Report. “This financial strength allows the industry to invest even more in the innovation and productivity it will need to feed an ever-growing world population,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief agricultural economist. In 2015, the debt-toasset ratio on Canadian farms remained historically low at 15.5 per cent, compared to the previous
five-year average of 15.9 per cent and the 15-year average of 16.7 per cent, according to the report. A low debt-to-asset ratio is generally considered better for business, since it provides financial flexibility and lowers risk for producers. FCC’s Outlook for Farm Assets and Debt Report provides an overview of the balance sheet of agriculture, focusing on the financial health of the sector. It also looks at the affordability of assets relative to farm income, with a special focus on farmland values. “After a prolonged period of strong growth
in farm asset and land values, our projections indicate a deceleration in both increasing land values and farm debt levels,” Gervais said. The report analyzed three key indicators of the financial health of Canada’s agriculture sector: liquidity, solvency and profitability. It found that farm liquidity, which looks at the ability of producers to make shortterm payments, and solvency – the proportion of total assets financed by debt – have remained consistently strong over the past five years. In 2015, farm profitability, calculated by comparing net income to
soften. This reflects the cyclical nature of the business.” From 2001 to 2011, the value of farmland and buildings appreciated on average 7.2 per cent per year, doubling over that timeframe. From 2012 to 2015, average annual appreciation was 11.7 per cent and total appreciation was 39.4 per cent. Gervais said a combination of low interest rates and strong crop receipts was the primary cause of the rapid rate of asset appreciation in recent years. He projects appreciation will slow down with the expectation of lower crop prices over the next two to three years. To join the discussion on FCC’s Outlook for Farm Assets and Debt
total assets, was slightly below the five-year average due to strong farm asset appreciation, especially in farmland values. “Land is the most valuable asset a farmer owns and the most important input for agricultural production,” said Gervais, noting that land made up 67 per cent of the value of total farm assets in 2015, compared to 54 per cent in 1981. “As farming becomes more profitable, farmland becomes more expensive,” he said. “However, when asset values are increasing more quickly than net farm income, overall profitability begins to
Port of Churchill lastest casualty It was a previous Liberal government that privatized the railroads and allowed the sale of the Port of Churchill and Hudson Bay rail line to a Denver-based company called OmniTrax. The Harper government knew that the chance of the Churchill port surviving after the termination of the Canadian Wheat Board was nil. The Wheat Board directed almost 95% of the grain going through the port. “Minister Ritz camouflaged the negative impact for the Port of Churchill by providing the subsidy” states Jan Slomp, NFU president. That subsidy is due to end next year. “The location of the
port is ideal for shipping products to and from Europe, Russia, Mexico, Africa, South America, and the Middle East.Using the Port of Churchill eliminates time-consuming navigation, additional handling and high-cost transportation through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.”* OmniTrax, which is the largest employer in Churchill, laid off dozens of workers on Monday and announced that the port will close ahead of schedule on August 6. The loss of jobs will no doubt have a devastating effect on the local economy and is all the more difficult to accept due to the lack of notice and
consultation. This port played a vital role in bringing prairie grains to market and alleviated backups when large shipments occurred. The freight advantage to eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoban farmers amounted to $10-25/tonne (approximately $1,000/car load) compared to going through the St. Lawrence system. This, when Canadian farmers and grain shippers are anticipating a massive grain crop. The Western Grain Eleva Four giant grain companies now control the grain handling system and none of them own the port of Churchill. So why are we forgo-
ing our interest in strategic infrastructure? “How can OmniTrax unilaterally decide to close a port that is of such strategic importance to Canada?”asks Slomp. “The federal government should intervene.” Terry Boehm says, “When we rely on privatization as the solution to all economic matters, the narrow interests of businesses often negatively impact the greater interests of the Canadian economy as a whole. The closure of Churchill is another huge example of this.”

Ag Industry using education to build public trust Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and S a s k a t c h e w a n Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart highlighted the importance of agriculture education and working together to engage consumers and build public trust. Minister MacAulay and Minister Stewart also had the opportunity to discuss this year’s crop and partake in a harvest demonstration at the Moose Jaw Food Farm. “With only two per cent of the Canadian
population now having direct ties to the farm, there’s a real need to educate people about the importance and value of our agriculture and agri-food industry,” said MacAulay. “As everyone focuses on going back-toschool this week, it’s is an ideal time to show our combined governments’ commitment to agricultural education, which is key to unlocking further innovation, research, entrepreneurship and economic growth in the sector.”
“As a lifelong farmer and rancher I understand the importance of agriculture,” Stewart said. “This isn’t the reality for a number of people in Saskatchewan anymore, with many generations now removed from the farm. This disconnect is why we remain focused on building the connection between people, their food and modern agriculture.” The Agriculture Awareness Initiative Program (AAIP) provides funding to projects that
help tell Saskatchewan’s agriculture story. AAIP is a Growing Forward 2 (GF2) initiative designed to enhance the public understanding of agriculture, create awareness of its role in the economy and promote the diversity of agricultural careers. Since the program launched in 2013, more than $600,000 has been committed to 47 projects. Education partners and a number of agriculture industry associations have used
Swath or straight-cut? Desiccant or pre-harvest herbicide? There are a number of factors to consider when selecting management practices for harvesting flax. The following is an overview of the benefits, challenges and ways to optimize harvesting flax.
occurs in fall, such as when desiccation has not be used, there is a wet fall after a dry August or a lack of killing frost. Swathing should occur when bolls are 75 – 80 % brown (mature crop). Cutting prior to this stage can result in seed weathering, and reduced seed weights. Immature seeds can be damaged by frost at -3°C to -5°C range. To ensure drying and prevent movement by strong winds, stubble height should be 4 – 6 inches and rolling swaths is recommended.
material from entering the combine. Glyphosate can also reduce plant regrowth because of the systemic mode of action of the product. Desiccants are generally faster acting, especially as temperatures have begun to drop which may cause reduced efficacy of glyphosate. If the plant has
matured (brown bolls) but stems remain green, diquat may be advantageous since the product does not require an actively growing plant. However, benefits must be weighed against the higher costs associated with the product. - Courtesy Flax Council of Canada
Thoughts on harvest options
Straight-Cutting
Flax is well suited to straight-cutting due to low shattering risk (relative to canola) and seed bolls that develop high up on the plant. However, flax does cause some unique challenges due to the tough, fibrous nature of the straw. Cutter bars should be well maintained and sharp to prevent gumming up of the knife. Desiccation can be an alternative to waiting for natural dry down, such as when moist soil conditions result in stems staying green, or a hard killing frost.
Swathing
Swathing of flax has become less common, largely due to larger farm size and the availability of improved equipment which facilitates straight cutting, reduces labour and harvest time. However, swathing can still provide advantages over straight-cutting in some years. For example, swathing can be a good alternative to straight cutting if re-growth
AAIP funding to help advance their awareness initiatives including Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK), Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission and Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association. “October is Agriculture Month and ‘Our Food Has a Story’ is the theme this year,” Stewart said. “It is an excellent opportunity to expand on the work industry and government is doing to share our values and talk about how the food we produce winds
up on the plates of people here in Saskatchewan and around the world. I encourage everyone to share their food story next month.” For more information on AAIP, visit www.saskatchewan.ca and search Agriculture Awareness Initiative Program. AAIP is funded through Growing Forward 2, a cost-shared partnership between federal, provincial and territorial governments designed to foster an innovative, competitive and profitable Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector.

Chemical Desiccation/ Preharvest Herbicides Desiccants and preharvest herbicides can be a good option to facilitate crop dry down and ease harvest. However, it is important to note that both desiccants and preharvest herbicides do not speed maturity. Products should be applied only after the crop has reached physiological maturity (75% brown boll). Once dried down, the crop is at risk of boll shattering and should be combined as soon as possible after samples test 10% moisture. If perennial weeds are a problem then glyphosate may be a good option to control weeds while also drying down the crop. This can also be beneficial to prevent green

• It was Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist Gabriel Garcia Marquez who made the following sage observation: “Words are not created by academics in universities and suchlike; rather it is the man in the street who does so. Dictionary compilers almost always recognize them too late and embalm them in alphabetical order, in many cases when they have lost their original meaning.” • Those who study such things say that when faced with a crisis situation, the average woman tends to remain calmer than the average man. • You might be surprised to learn that the first printing press in North America was not
anywhere within the present-day boundaries of the United States. The very first one was set up in Mexico City, back in 1539. • In the Talmud, a central text of Rabbinic Judaism, sneezing is called “pleasure sent from God.” • The largest single dormitory in the world is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. With 4.8 miles of corridors and providing 33 acres of floor space, Bancroft Hall provides a home for the school’s entire brigade of 4,000 midshipmen. • Many people harbor a fear of snakes (which, incidentally, is known as ophidiophobia), but venomous bites and con-

stricting squeezes aren’t the only ways a snake can kill. For instance, in the 1990s a man in Iran, while trying to capture a snake, placed the butt of his shotgun against the snake’s neck behind its head. In attempting to escape, the snake wrapped the length of its body around the gun, pulling the trigger in the process — and killing its would-be captor.
• According to historians, Native Americans who lived on the Pacific coast often weaned their babies on caviar.
