Minimum wage increase effective October 1 Saskatchewan’s minimum wage will increase to $10.72 an hour. The change will take effect on October 1, 2016. “Increases to the minimum wage, when combined with other supports and tax exemptions, help ease the financial burden for lowincome earners,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “By annu-

ally reviewing the minimum wage, we have created a predictable system for employees and business owners.” Saskatchewan’s legislation provides for an annual review based on changes to the consumer price index and the average hourly wage. Any changes to the minimum wage are announced by June 30 each year. Any changes

The majority (56 per cent) are under the age of 25 and largely work in the accommodations, food services or retail industries. home or cabin with a forced air furnace is we set the thermostat to a certain temp and leave it. This heat barely keeps the ambient air warm, and when the heat source turns off, the cold is already at work and shortly thereafter the furnace is kicking back on. The better way is to get the building really warm first – the walls, floor and ceiling need to become very warm before you efficiently use wood or gas. Now with gas you will have no worries as the thermostat will engage the furnace when needed, but with wood – you are the temp gauge. After you have thoroughly heated your building to a higher temperature especially in the evening, you will want the fire to last longer. Traditionally a fire is started by building a small tent with small sticks and paper, once

started you place slightly larger pieces of soft wood (easier burning) and place them apart so they can breathe and stacking them in a “log cabin” fashion. Then placing much longer burning wood in the fire box and hoping for a miracle it will stay warm in the house until morning. While this method is known to everyone, it is very inefficient and wasteful. You get a hot burn for a short while, and unless you burn much harder wood, the fire will go out within a few short hours. I suggest only using this method to get the building really warm as previously stated. Afterward we want the fire to last a really long time, and to do so you will need to build an UPSIDE DOWN fire. You will need a hot coal shovel if you have already made a fire. Simply move the hot embers to the side first as we do not want the fire to start at the bottom of the pile at all. Place the hardest wood pieces as closely together as you can and try to

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay Long Burn. Perhaps you do not enjoy the thought of winter coming but autumn is definitely my favorite time of year. We still get to wear the T-shirt during the day, but enjoy the warmth of a fire outside in the evening. The smell of the fire is very relaxing and the burning fire is better than any TV program. We burn a lot of wood at our home and in the greenhouses, which is quite the chore to collect, keep and load. I cut and sell firewood as well, but I was determined to find some ways to make the heat work a bit better or somehow make the wood burn longer. Now I can read your mind, “Burn longer you say?” but it can be possible. Even if you do not use a home wood burning furnace to heat your home, you may go to a cabin on occasion and have to face the dreaded “fire is out” in the middle of the night conversation. My wife and I always do Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine whose going to go make a new fire. I always lose, so you see my problem. First of all, if you are not using fans to push the heat around, you can put a neat device called an ECOFAN on top of your wood burning stove. It is built from materials that cause the fan to spin when it gets hot and cost about $75. They use no power and last a very long time. As a side note the mistake commonly made when trying to heat a

Wind adds challenge to Stockholm event The wind was blowing, and that made throwing golf discs all the more challenging, but that did not deter those taking part in the first tournament to be held at the Stockholm Disc Golf Course. “All week we were keeping one eye on the forecast,” said Trevor Lyons, tournament director with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf. “There was supposed to be rain, but the system moved through, and the sun was shining. But the wind was pretty strong for the first nine, and by the time we went out for the championship nine, it was gusting even harder.” But the wind was generally taken in stride by participants, although the par-30 course played far harder because of it. After two rounds scores of 75 proved good enough to make the final round of five. “It was a bit wild out there, no doubt about it,” said PADG chair Calvin Daniels, himself a participant. “There were some pretty wild throws out there.” Daniels, who did not make the final five, changed hats and picked up

a microphone, to do commentary on the round for Access 7 television coverage, said players adapted well to the wind. “The early round scores were certainly inflated by the wind playing havoc with some shots, but the final five steadied things in the gusting winds,” he said. In the end Duncan Holness of Regina, a finalist at the PADG event at Patrick Park Disc Golf Course in Yorkton earlier this year, would top the field throwing a one over par 31 in the final round. The win was a narrow one, with Chris Hoyt of Regina just a stroke off the pace with a 32. Adam Daniels of Yorkton was two strokes back with a 33, good enough for third. Fourth was J.J. Kroczynski of Regina, with Lyons of Yorkton

rounding out the top five. “It was quite a final round,” said Daniels. “Chris (Hoyt), teed off on number four and the disc got up over the tree line and the wind just kept pushing it north, off the course, across the road, and into an adjacent yard. “And then were some fine shots. Duncan (Holness) had a few tough lies, but made some key approach shots from his knees, which were key to his win.” Lyons said the course, which was just installed this summer, was in great shape for the event, and was well received by players. “We are very lucky in this area to have had a lot of communities see value in creating disc golf courses for local recreation,” he said. “The Stockholm course

is among those, and I encourage players to

check it out.” - Submitted by the

bill we look at the Foreign Farmer As we continue with the third part of “Who is buying Saskatchewan Farm Land?” Buyer.

Foreign Farmers are limited to 10 Acres or less until they receive their Canadian Citizenship. The process at times is lengthy, 2 years or more, due to the many rules and regulations involved with the Immigration process in addition to the cooperation and speed of the Buyers Country of Origin Government. Once the Immigration Visas are issued the Foreign Farmer is in a position to move forward with purchasing Saskatchewan Farm Land. As with Distant Farmers, Foreign Farmers are relocating to Saskatchewan due to the attractive values and large amounts of good quality arable land. An added challenge Foreign Farmers face is learning how to Farm here as compared to where they are coming from. This includes not only the type of crops that are grown, but how to grow them. What type and amount of Inputs? The length of the growing season, when to seed, when to spray, when to swath and harvest? How about the marketing systems and the type of equipment and storage facilities? While those of us who have grown up here are familiar with the answers to all of the above, just imagine for a moment the task of learning all of this combined with the decision to move your family to the other side of the World! This is where the many resources in our Agriculture Industry are called upon to help out. Land Agrologists, Seed, Chemical & Fertilizer Specialists, Grain Marketers, Equipment Suppliers, Ag Specialist Realtors®, and more are all valuable assets that help to make the transition more comfortable and ultimately successful for these Foreign Farm Buyers. Next time we turn our focus from Farmer Buyers to Investor Buyers.

ANIMAL HEALTH WEEK October 2 to October 8

Rabies: what you need to know

Most pet owners aren’t concerned about their animals contracting rabies, but the reality is that infection with the deadly virus usually results in death for animals as well as people. “There’s no cure for rabies disease,” says Dr. Jordan Woodsworth, wellness veterinarian at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Medical Centre. Rabies is transmitted through salivary secretions of infected animals. Bites are the most common source of transmission, but infection can also occur through salivary contact with mucous membranes such as the mouth and eyes. “What happens is that the rabies virus is introduced into the body through the bite wound, and then it travels by peripheral nerves to the central nervous system (CNS). The closer the bite is to the CNS, the faster the disease will progress,” explains Woodsworth, adding that the incubation period can last anywhere from three weeks to six months. If given early post-exposure treatment, some animals will mount an effective enough immune response to fight the infection. But once the virus reaches the central nervous system, Woodsworth says nothing can be done. If a veterinarian suspects rabies, the affected animal is humanely euthanized before the virus progresses any further. The rabies virus causes muscle paralysis, and eventually, an infected animal will not be able to move its lungs to breathe. Rabies can’t be definitively diagnosed until a post mortem examination of brain tissue is performed. The best prevention is to vaccinate all cats, dogs and ferrets against rabies, regardless of whether they’re indoor or outdoor pets. People such as veterinarians and other health care practitioners who are at risk for coming in contact with potentially rabid animals should also be vaccinated. Dogs and cats as young as three months old can be given the rabies vaccine, and a booster shot is required one year later. Depending on the specific vaccine used, additional booster shots are required every one to three years. Rabies is a zoonotic disease — a disease that can be passed from animals to other animals and humans. And since infection almost always results in death, the health risk for humans is enormous. “Anytime an unvaccinated animal comes to us with clinical signs such as unexplained neurologic symptoms, seizures, blindness, behaviour changes or hypersalivation, rabies is on the list of differential diagnoses,” says Woodsworth. If a rabid animal bites an unvaccinated pet, the unvaccinated animal could be placed in quarantine for up to six months as a safety precaution. In Saskatchewan, the recommendation to quarantine an affected animal is made by a veterinary inspector. Authorized personnel in similar roles make the decision to quarantine in other Canadian provinces. But even if your pet is vaccinated, call your veterinarian if it’s bitten by a wild animal. Your veterinarian may still recommend quarantining your pet, and it should undergo a recommended post-exposure protocol. If you suspect your pet or another animal to have rabies, proceed with extreme caution. Wear gloves and put the animal into a crate where they can’t bite anyone. Uncharacteristic behaviours may be seen in rabid animals so even previously gentle pets may bite if they become infected. The safest mode of action is to contact your local animal control office if you suspect an animals to be rabid or call the Saskatchewan rabies information line at 1-844-7-RABIES (1-844-772-2437). If a person has been bit or has been in contact with an animal that may be rabid, please contact your local public health authorities.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently went to my family doctor, complaining of left-arm pain and heartburn-like pain in my throat area. He said that he could admit me to the hospital for two days of testing or that it could be a pinched nerve in my neck. It was my choice not to go to the hospital, so he recommended meloxicam for a possible pinched nerve. As it turns out, my symptoms later became so uncomfortable that I decided to go to the ER three days after seeing my doctor. It was a serious blockage of a main artery to my heart, and emergency surgery was performed to put a stent in. I am lucky to have made it in time. I realize that it was my decision to not be admitted — I guess I was in denial. I never thought to ask him if he could have given me an electrocardiogram there in his office, and some people, including my intensivecare nurse, asked why he didn’t. Because he didn’t offer to test me in his office, I am considering changing doctors. I like him and he has always given me good care in the past, so I’m not sure what to do. I feel that had he done the ECG that day, my problem could have been diagnosed much sooner and possibly prevented my heart attack. Why wouldn’t he have checked my heart function right there with the electrocardiogram? He did check my blood pressure and listen to my heart, but those seemed to be normal. Can you give me your opinion on this? I am a 64-year-old male. — F.M. ANSWER: Without

being there, I can’t give an opinion on whether your doctor should have insisted on your being admitted to the hospital, but I am printing your letter to once again emphasize that heart disease, even serious blockages, can have minimal or no symptoms. It sounds like your doctor did suspect heart disease, and I bet he now regrets not insisting that you be admitted.

It’s a judgment call, and you have to consider not only the symptoms, but also the risk factors. Just being a 64-year-old man is a risk factor; if you had other risks, such as elevated blood pressure, cholesterol, a history of smoking or a family history of heart disease, that would make heart disease more likely. The electrocardiogram is not a perfect test,

and although it might have been abnormal at the time, it also is possible that it could have been perfectly normal. In hindsight, I wonder if your knowing your EKG was normal would have kept you from going to the emergency room when you did. To me, this isn’t so egregious that I would suggest you find a different doctor, but only you

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Quinn implored Wyatt to support the happiness that she had found with Eric. Meanwhile, Eric’s family staged an intervention over his relationship with Quinn. Desperate for the Forrester family’s approval and Wyatt’s happiness, Quinn pleaded with Steffy to accept her relationship with Eric. Carter threw Eric for a loop when showing him a document commissioned by Ridge. Pam and Charlie found themselves in an awkward position among the Forresters. RJ begged

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Remembering his visit with Lucinda and seeing her 25-year sobriety chip, Neil vowed to his family that he would be strong and reach that goal himself. Chelsea

made it clear to Nick that she didn’t want or need his help. Victoria returned home from Seattle and discovered that Billy was spiraling out of control after secretly being rejected by Phyllis. Travis interrupted the argument between Victoria and Billy. Nick felt he needed to convince Chelsea that he only wanted to help. Improvement

Get the facts on using solar energy Solar energy is gaining traction, particularly among homeowners who are realizing that the sun’s rays can be used to power to their homes, businesses and cars while benefitting both the planet and their bottom lines. The Solar Energy Industries Association says that, with more than 135,000 installations in the first half of 2015, nearly 784,000 U.S. homes and businesses have now gone solar and a new solar project was installed every two minutes. There are now more than 22,700 MW of cumulative solar electric capacity operating in the United States, enough to power more than 4.6 million American homes. The government of Canada says wind power

and solar photovoltaic energy are the fastest growing sources of electricity in Canada. Recognizing that solar energy has so many cost benefits and so much potential in protecting natural resources, more and more homeowners are investigating the idea of installing solar energy systems in their homes. The following are some things homeowners should consider as they ponder whether or not to install solar energy in their homes. • Ideally, panels should face the southwest, but the direction of the panels isn’t as important as you might think. Panels can face various directions with acceptable results. Homeowners should not let the layout of their

properties deter them from installing solar energy. • The addition of solar panels should not adversely affect the assessment value of a home, nor increase property taxes. • According to SolarEnergy, a resource on residential solar products, there may be different “tiers” of usage that determine utility companies’ rates concerning energy. The top tier may be removed from the billing formula when solar power is used in conjunction with an electric energy provider. Speak with a utility company representative to learn more. • Assess just how much energy you will need to determine which solar options will be available

to you. In addition, make other changes around the house to reduce energy consumption, such as putting HVAC systems on timers, shutting off lights

when leaving rooms, opening the drapes to let in more natural light, and replacing traditional light bulbs with more efficient alternatives.

Solar energy can be a viable option for homeowners looking to curtail costs and do their part to preserve the planet’s natural resources.

Painting your home’s exterior like a pro Painting is an inexpensive way to transform just about any space. Many people paint the interiors of their homes, but home exteriors also can undergo dramatic makeovers with fresh coats of paint. Timing the job right and heeding some tips from professionals and do-it-yourselfers who have tread the painting path before you can make the job go smoothly. Consider the time of year Consider local weather patterns and forecasts when planning an exterior painting project. Choose a time of year when there is little rain and low humidity, such as autumn. Keep in mind that the paint will require a couple of days to dry completely and cure, and that can be difficult in damp weather. Don’t hamper the final outcome with poor timing.

Prepare the painting surfaces Resist the temptation to start painting straight away. Paint may not adhere to unprepared surfaces, and dirt and other debris may show through and mar the finished product. Repainting a home’s exterior will likely involve removing peeling or chipping paint prior to making your first strokes. Wear protective gear when scraping, sanding or brushing old paint, as such tasks can generate dust that can be dangerous to inhale, particularly if the old paint contains lead. Employ a chlorine bleach solution to kill any mildew and to scrub

upon which to put your paint color. Once you have applied the primer, test your paint color in a small, inconspicuous spot to see how the color looks in the daylight. You do not want to paint the entire home only to find out you dislike the color.

any dirt from the house. In addition, repair any cracks or imperfections. For example, if you’re painting stucco, you may have to fill in any pitting or holes. Use this opportunity to inspect caulking around windows and doors. Recaulk as needed to seal up drafty areas or those that may cause

water infiltration prior to painting. Prime and cover stains It may be a little extra work, but apply a quality primer as the first coat to hide any imperfections, such as wood knots or discoloration from weathering. Primer provides a smooth, even surface

Try these painting techniques Rent a paint sprayer for large surface areas. The sprayer will produce a more uniform application and is less time-consuming than painting everything with a brush or roller. Make sure you’ve chosen a high-quality paint, as the added expense is worth it if the paint lasts longer and coats more evenly.

Also, if you have purchased multiple cans of paint, mix them all in one large bucket to ensure the same color; otherwise, the colors may not match perfectly. The experts at HGTV recommend working your way from top to bottom in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by eight inches. Trim and hardto-reach areas should be left for brush work so you can maintain control over your tools. If you are painting areas like steps or staircases, consider adding a little fine-grain sand to the paint to improve traction, as paint can be slippery when wet. If painting your home’s exterior is beyond your capabilities, hire a professional. He or she will get the work done in a timely manner, and you can rest assured that the job will be done correctly.

Projects for your fall to-do list Homeowners know that maintaining a home can be a year-round job. No home is immune to wear and tear, and homeowners who want to protect their real estate investments should try to stay two steps ahead to ensure their homes do not succumb to the elements or become outdated and unappealing to prospective buyers. Fall has become a season that’s synonymous with home improvement, but homeowners need not wait until the leaves begin changing colors to start planning their next projects. The following are a few items homeowners can add to their fall home improvement to-do lists. Roof inspection Less precipitation tends to fall during the warmer months than during the late fall and winter. As a result, homeowners may not be aware of leaky roofs until autumn has come and gone. But waiting until winter to inspect the roof can prove disastrous, as weather conditions will not be conducive to inspection and increased precipitation may

Autumn is a great time to inspect patios that might have endured some wear and tear during the heavy usage seasons of spring and summer. result in potentially costly damage. Leaky roofs can be easily identified by looking for water stains on interior ceilings. Once you see a stain, you can climb onto the roof to identify the location of the leak and fix it before winter rains and snowfall turn the problem into something much larger. Inspect your ceilings for signs of leaking after a strong rainfall, and then address any leaks immediately.

Gutter cleaning While some homeowners prefer to delay their gutter cleaning projects until late fall, those whose homes are surrounded by trees may need to schedule two such projects. Gutters clogged with leaves and other debris can cause serious roof damage, and that damage can extend all the way inside a home. In addition, clogged gutters make great nesting areas for insects

or critters. Always stand on a ladder when cleaning gutters, wearing gloves to remove items by hand and dropping leaves and debris into a trash can below. Standing on the roof and leaning over gutters greatly increases your risk of injury. If the gutters are clear when you first examine them in early fall, you can wait until later in the season to give them a complete and thorough cleaning. Once you have finished clearing the gutters, you can use a hose to run water through them and the downspouts to confirm everything is functioning properly. Window and doorway inspection Before temperatures start dropping once again, homeowners will want to inspect their windows and doorways for leaks. Over time, cracks can develop around windows and doorways, and while such cracks are rarely noticeable when the weather outside is warm, they can be quite obvious and very costly if they remain unsealed come the start of winter. Cold air can enter a home through cracks

around windows and doorways, and many homeowners who don’t suspect leaks may respond by turning up the thermostats in their homes. That can prove quite expensive over a full winter. Choose a windy autumn day to place a hand by windows and external doorways in your home to see if you can feel drafts. If you can, seal these cracks as soon as possible. Patio cleanup Patios are popular hangouts during spring and summer, and that can result in a lot of wear and tear. Once you store patio furniture for the winter, inspect your entire patio to determine if it needs any refurbishing. While certain patio projects may be best left for spring, you can still clean any stained areas around the grill and look for cracks in the sidewalk that need to be addressed. Preparing for fall home improvement projects ahead of time can help homeowners complete projects in a timely manner and ensures they won’t be forced to brave the winter elements when refurbishing their homes.

Maximize your basement’s potential (MS) — By Scott McGillivray If today’s real estate market has you frazzled, a home renovation project may be just the right answer. With home prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend towards building even more equity in the home. A finished basement can offer a little extra room and give a growing family space to breathe, and with so many uses, a renovated basement may be exactly what your home is missing. It can provide additional storage, a sound-proofed media room, craft room, guest room, or income suite. The possibilities are endless. Here are some tips on how to give your basement a 180-degree makeover: Waterproof it. Check the interior foundation and floors to make sure there are no existing moisture issues, water damage or mold problems. Address any primary moisture issues before finishing the space. Examine grading to

ensure water runs away from your foundation. Soundproof it. Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a gettogether or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with. Add or replace flooring. Installing a new floor can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Vinyl, laminate, ceramic tile, and engineered hard-

wood are great options. Say no to carpet, which can harbor mold and allergens, particularly in the basement, and don’t forget to lay a subfloor. Add color. Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. If your basement has low ceilings or limited natural light, choose lighter, warmer tones to brighten the space. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall. Accessorize it. Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are sim-

really an opportunity to make it your own and let your personality shine through. They also provide an inexpensive way to keep your space looking fresh from year to year.

Keeping your kitchen reno headache-free (NC) — The thought of a kitchen renovation may cause your eye to twitch and your sweat to trickle. You’ve heard the horror stories — work costing more than expected, lasting too long, or not ending up the way you expected. While you can’t predict everything, there are ways to keep the road to a shiny new kitchen relatively stress-free. Robin Saxberg, principal designer at Hamilton, Ontario’s DESZA Design, advises that leaving the project to a professional may save you headaches in the long-run. “Occasionally, the client will want to do the demolition themselves either for cost-savings or for fun, which it is. However, there may be a risk of accidently dam-

aging something important,” she reveals. “Most demos require the rental or purchase of tools, safety equipment and waste bin rental which could eliminate much of the potential savings.” If you’re thinking of taking on the demolition yourself in hopes of saving a few bucks, look at other options. Contact your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore to see if they are able to remove your old kitchen for you. Also keep in mind that the contractor you hire usually includes this in their quote. If you feel like you’re drowning in sawdust, Saxberg says to keep in mind that your kitchen won’t always be gutted. “Though your renovation may seem overwhelming

at times, it is temporary. Any stress and chaos will pass and when the dust settles, you’ll have a beautiful, perfectly unique space that functions the way you need it to.” In the meantime, follow her five tips for a smooth and successful kitchen reno. 1. Get everything in writing: Read and understand all contracts with designers, contractors and anyone else you hire. 2. Keep an emergency fund: Set aside around 10 per cent of your renovation budget as a contingency fund. If a pipe bursts or the electrical needs to be rewired, you won’t panic knowing you have enough to cover it. 3. Plan as much as possible: Lay out your reno-

vation roadmap before the project begins, and don’t be afraid to ask your contractor or designer lots of questions. Placing orders before work starts will also cut down on wait time for deliveries. 4. Invest in key pieces: Putting money into a quality stone surface countertop and Canadian-made solid wood flooring will ensure your kitchen will stand the test of time. 5. Reduce, reuse, recycle: Do some good by donating your old kitchen items to a local charitable organization, like Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Many contractors also work with them. This will keep your old kitchen out of the landfill and help others in the process.

Maintain your roof with 5-point checklist (NC) — On average, Canadian homeowners replace their roofing materials every 18 years at an average cost of $4,500 per project, based on a standard 1,000 square foot bungalow roof. Fortunately, a roof’s longevity and its ability to remain waterproof is increased with proper maintenance. Use this handy checklist to evaluate the condition of your roof and determine if it’s time to consider a quick fix or a major overhaul. 1. Condition of the roof: Inspect the surface and list the required minor repairs. It may be neces-

sary to add repair compound around any openings such as the chimney. Repair or replace aged or damaged shingles, remove moss and mildew, and clean out the gutters. 2. Water tightness: If it’s accessible, an inspec-

tion of your attic is a good way to find potential sources of water leaks. Dark stained areas on wood are usually signs of water damage. The accumulation of ice in the lower areas of the roof may also cause water leakage.

3. Insulation: Formation of ice on lower areas of your roof is also a sign of poor insulation. Make sure your ceiling insulation is composed of a continuous vapour barrier and an insulating material providing an R-factor (measure of

Home repairs you can do yourself (NC) — No matter what your level of expertise, there are plenty of small fix-ups you can do around your home with relative ease. It’s always advisable to call in an expert for large-scale home repairs, but more minor projects are a great way to keep your home in top shape for your family and potential buyers should you ever decide to sell. “Maintaining your home is by far the best way to preserve its value,” advises Mark Wolle, brokerowner at Royal LePage Wolle Realty in Kitchener, Ontario. “And with an arsenal of timely smallscale repairs, homeowners can keep many larger scale fixes at bay.” There are hundreds of small ways you can keep your home in top shape. Invest in a good homerepair manual, or visit your local library for resource materials. Here, Wolle offers his top five easy 10-minute fix-ups: 1. Fill cracked drywall seams. Using a taping knife, smooth a piece of nylon drywall tape over the crack, working from the centre toward the edges. Cover the tape with a thin layer of joint compound and

let dry. Apply a second coat, feathering at edges. Sand, prime, and repaint the area. 2. Silence squeaky floors. Scrape the joints between floorboards to remove dirt, then sprinkle a little baby powder between the squeaky ones. Bounce up and down on the area to work the powder into the joint. 3. Repair a sticky sliding glass door. Clean the tracks by moving the door to one side and then the

other as you vacuum. Clean the tracks with denatured alcohol. Spray the upper track with silicone spray and rub paraffin wax along the lower one. 4. Unclog a sink with non-toxic chemicals. To clear most clogs, pour a cup of baking soda into the drain and then add a pint of vinegar. Stand back and wait for an eruption. After about fifteen minutes, pour several cups of boiling water

down the drain. 5. Caulk a bathtub. Remove old caulk. Tape above and below the joint that needs caulking and fill tub with water to weigh it down and open the joint. Squeeze a thin bead of caulk along the open joint. Use your index finger to smooth out the caulk; remove tape and wipe away excess with a damp rag. Find more information at www.royallepage. ca.

thermal resistance) of 30 or more. The vapour barrier must be airtight, and all holes for pipes and cables must be sealed. This prevents warm and humid air from going through to the attic and condensing just under the roof structure during cold weather. 4. Ventilation: Appropriate ventilation and insulation of your attic allows air to circulate under the roof, reducing the melting of snow and the risk of ice accumulation on the lower portions of your roof. In the summer, appropriate ventilation makes a house more comfortable and helps prevent shingles from overheating. 5. Decide a course of action: If your roof inspection uncovers

problems and extensive wear, it may be necessary to consider giving it a facelift. For a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative to replacing your shingles, consider using Techniseal’s elastomeric roof coating called RoofKeeper. Guaranteed to extend the life of your roof for at least 10 years, it forms a UV-resistant barrier between the roofing material and the elements to stop deterioration. It’s also easy to use and can be applied over any sloping or vertical surfaces on your old asphalt shingle or sheetmetal roof with a paint roller or airless sprayer. Find more information on roof maintenance and renovations online at techniseal.com.

Remodel for maximum ROI with these top projects (MS) — By Scott McGillivray Did you know that being environmentally conscious is also an easy way to put money in your pocket? You can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and energy consumption if you have an efficient home and use cleaner products. Consider a few, simple eco-improvements to reduce energy consumption and increase savings on your monthly energy bill. Insulation: If your house is older, chances are the insulation doesn’t meet new code requirements. An improperly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss and results in your furnace and air conditioning units working harder than necessary. By topping up the existing attic insulation you can significantly reduce energy loss. A popular product for this DIY project is Roxul ComfortBatt insulation. It is easy to install over existing attic insulation and can easily be cut to fit with a serrated blade or bread knife. House appliances: Replacing your furnace, hot water tank and air conditioning unit with high-efficiency models is

10 also a good way to lower your home’s energy consumption. Windows: It’s usually obvious when it’s time for new windows. Replacing worn and drafty windows can also improve the comfort and overall look of your home. If you want to reap the greatest energy savings, request a custom brick-to-brick installation, because inserts can leave gaps, especially if placed in the old, inefficient jamb. Landscape your home for energy efficiency. Plant a few tall, deciduous trees near your home to significantly reduce the amount of solar energy passing through windows and beating down on your roof. In fact, the right amount of shade in the right places can reduce cooling bills by 10

to 50 percent. The quick eco-list: Here are a few low-cost DIY projects you can tackle easily for greater energy savings: • Caulk around windows • Add weather stripping to doors • Install low-flow shower heads • Put aerators on faucets • Switch to energyefficient LED or CFL bulbs • Change your furnace filter • Set up a programmable thermostat Scott McGillivray is the award-winning TV host of the hit series Income Property, a full-time real estate investor, contractor, author, and educator. 3 minutes or until just tender. Drain well; place in same bowl as oniongarlic mixture. Toss well. Heat remaining oil in same skillet on high until hot. Add beef in single layer; cook 1 minute. Stir in remaining sliced green onions and salt and pepper (to taste); cook 1 minute longer. Stir in remaining soy sauce. Serve with rice and broccoli. Serves 4. • Each serving: About 510 calories, 21g total fat (7g saturated), 30g protein, 50g carbohydrate, 5g fiber, 75mg cholesterol, 585mg sodium.

•2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves •1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

Place steak in freezer. Prepare rice as label directs. Meanwhile, in large bowl, combine 1 tablespoon sliced green onions, 1 teaspoon garlic, 2 teaspoons oil and 1/4 teaspoon salt; set aside. Cut cold steak across grain into very thin slices; in shallow bowl, toss with sugar, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, green-onion chunks and remaining garlic. In 12-inch skillet, heat 1-inch water to boiling on high. Add broccoli; cook

SPICY THAI NOODLES •1 package (16 ounces) linguine •1/4 cup soy sauce •1 tablespoon sugar •2 tablespoons chili sauce •1 tablespoon vegetable oil •1 small red pepper, thinly sliced •1 tablespoon grated peeled fresh ginger •1 garlic clove, minced •1 bunch green onions, chopped •2 large eggs, lightly beaten •8 ounces fresh bean sprouts (about 2 cups), drained •1 small tomato, cut into thin wedges •2 tablespoons salted peanuts, chopped

In large saucepot, prepare linguine in boiling water as label directs but do not add salt. Meanwhile, in cup, stir soy sauce, sugar, chili sauce and 1/2 cup water; set aside. Add sliced red pepper, ginger, garlic and all but 1/4 cup chopped green onions, and cook until tender and lightly browned, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Push vegetables to one side of skillet. To other side of skillet, add eggs and cook until set but still moist, stirring. Stir bean sprouts and soy sauce mixture into vegetables and eggs; heat to boiling. Drain linguine. Toss linguine and tomato wedges with mixture in skillet. Spoon linguine mixture onto warm platter. Sprinkle with peanuts, cilantro, crushed red pepper and reserved green onions. Makes 5 main-dish servings. • Each serving: About 470 calories, 18g protein, 80g carbohydrate, 8g total fat (1 g saturated), 5g fiber, 85mg cholesterol, 965mg sodium.
