your furnace to operate so no heat or air conditioning, your clothes will remain dirty, and no lights, no cooking, no TV, no internet/phone, and no sump pump — should you need one. If you do not have a solution in case of power failure on the regular grid, you could very easily face these problems anyway. When you consider going OFF-GRID, you are choosing to have a solution to almost all of these issues. The question most people ask in their search for energy independence whether they want to be completely off grid or just want to have a backup plan that’s works is this; “Will this actually work if I go “off grid” and can I afford to do this?” First of all, it is not impossible nor is it so dramatically expensive that no one can afford it. Second you will be securing yourself better in your senior years. To speak personally for a moment, I have a great love and concern for everyone who is reaching retirement age or already there. I know many people who have

shared stories that their pension only can go so far — food is expensive — well you have to eat; hopefully the mortgage is paid so there is somewhere to live; but those utility bills can chew up so much on a fixed income and they keep on marching to the mailbox every month. Whether you are young or old, even modest investments towards what is called OFF-GRID technology will pay itself back many times. I truly love to help people get to a place where the monthly bills can or will be eliminated, and the independence and extra cash in the future will help your security. If you read anything, pick up a copy of Mother Earth Magazine as this is a rich source of info and stories of people who successfully achieved self sufficiency. Everything from manual tools, manual washing machines and more have been invented and are quite affordable so begin by reading and researching and I’m sure you will find some worthy and exciting solutions. PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay How many years did people in civilization live without electricity? The answer is, a lot longer than we have had it. In most parts of the world, electricity is still not available or abundant if available. Power sources in these countries are limited to battery life and would be used as we use gasoline in our cars — “I only have this much, so I can only go this far”. We have far more access to power and yet would go so far to say we could not live without it. The problem is that we have forgotten that we can live without it but unfortunately have become quite dependent from it. Want proof? — then I have a challenge for you. Go to your main breaker box and switch off the main breaker for your homes power and leave it there for two weeks. Consider what you do not have and cannot do. You cannot store food, you do not have power for

Smart estate planning includes charitable giving For many people, the notion of estate planning is not very exciting. But, it’s a necessary evil. The fact is that settling an estate can be tricky business without a solid written plan. One of the biggest reasons why you should have one is to protect your heirs and beneficiaries from paying a large tax bill. This bill comes after your death when your property, investments and any other assets are sold. This federal, provincial and capital gains tax bill could potentially take a large bite out of your net value. So here are some tips to help you prepare a solid estate plan. First, meet with the experts who will ensure that your plan is correct and legal. Your lawyer will help you select two essential people in your plan: a power of attorney and an executor. The power of attorney will have the legal authority to make medical decisions on your behalf per your living will. When you die, your executor will be legally responsible for ensuring that your estate is settled as defined by your will. It’s important that you choose wisely and keep your loved ones informed of your choices. Your lawyer can also help you to create a will and a living will, which are different but equally important parts of your estate plan. A will outlines how you would like your assets to be divided. The living will defines your medical instructions for your doctor and family in case you’re unable to speak for yourself. Your financial advisor will help you take an inventory of your assets and liabilities. Knowing what you have will make distribution to your loved-ones easier. Also consider speaking to your advisor about donating your life insurance policy to your favourite charity. This can substantially reduce your current taxes and the taxes owing at your death. Taking advantage of this type of charitable donation can be done in one of the following ways:

• During your lifetime, through premium payments; in this case, the charity must the policyholder and the beneficiary. • At your death, by bequeathing the insurance amount to the charity or designating the charity as the beneficiary of the policy.

Over the hill, but still running wild Exercise is well known to be beneficial to all parts of the body. It is a common lesson to teach kids about the importance of exercise as it pertains to growth. However, it is much less common to educate seniors about the importance of exercise and how it pertains to maintained health. Locally, there is one such place that aims to provide a comfortable environment that fosters healthy workout routines for those with less mobility. Fitness isn’t just a lifestyle for the young. Being active is not a term to be used only for getting kids off of their personal devices. Working out doesn’t always mean vigorous, heart pumping activity. Exercise is more than that. When it comes to activity for the matured body, gradual intensity levels should be taken. As the body ages, arterial walls begin to stiffen and thicken due to lessening collagen levels and elastin. This means that it becomes more difficult for blood cells to circulate. If strenuous

exercise is undertaken at this time, the increased blood flow against these stiffened walls can cause light-headedness and shortness of breath. Therefore, more caution needs to be used; light activity should be a starting point. Additionally, cognitive function decreases with age and more so with a sedentary lifestyle. As written in an article by M.D. Marisa Wan from the University of British Columbia, approximately 15% of Canadians older than age 65 live with cognitive impairment, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. Projections for 2038 suggest that one new case of dementia will be diagnosed every 2 minutes. Exercise has been proven to improve cognitive function in multiple studies. This is due to cell growth. Physical activity enhances the body’s natural cell growth. When new cells are created in the brain, more memories can be stored, thus improving cognitive function.

its opening three years ago. “I’ve always struggled with my weight. I decided I needed to do something; I wanted to feel comfortable in my own body again.” There is a “LadiesOnly” room aside from the main gym area where women who feel uncomfortable or intimidated by the larger, heavier equipment can go to exercise. The equipment in this room is set hydraulically, so there is no need to switch pins or load weights; the resistance is easily changeable. It is also set on a circuit, so for those new to exercise routines, a routine is already created for them. The Ladies-Only room has been a popular choice among the mature ladies, offering not only easier exercise, but a small circle of friends. “I enjoy the feeling of working out, but I also enjoy being with the people I’ve met here. We celebrate birthdays, go out for coffee and motivate each other. It’s a small community here,” Tressel noted.

Birthday cards can be seen lining the shelf, and a cardboard cut-out of Dwayne Johnson can be seen in the corner with motivational messages to encourage hard work. Those that are interested in trying out the room are encouraged to just walk in and ask for a tour. PAC is located at 27 B 2nd Ave N. The mixture of exercise and social interaction has proven to be beneficial to all the senior attendees at the PAC, as many feel empowered and energized; Trussel is one of them. Proper exercise has led her to feel the benefits of cognitive function and improved circulation. Now age is just a number.

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. Nobody will notice it because of LWV PLQXWH VL]H ¿WWLQJ VQXJO\ DQG comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown to reduce the

strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement LQ \HDUV RI ¿WWLQJ KHDULQJ DLGV and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been trying to lose weight, with no results. I have cut back on carbs and sugar. In general, I watch what I eat. I also go to the YMCA and work out — in the water mostly, because my legs hurt so much. I weigh 286 pounds. I would love to lose 100 pounds, but I am

not having any luck. When I go to my primary-care doctor, he tells me that I need to lose weight. When I tell him what I have been doing to try to lose weight, he doesn’t believe me. I think I need more help with my weight problem. I don’t know if I should find a new doctor, or what! — J.S. ANSWER: I have heard variations of this story so many times from my own patients that I am sure you are trying. However, losing weight is a very difficult thing to do. Once your body has reached a certain weight, it is incredibly hard to

get things turned around. Fortunately, it is possible for everyone to lose weight. But you certainly do need some help. So does your primary-care doctor. As an alternative to getting a new one, I think it might be worthwhile to see an expert in weight loss, since this is a field requiring knowledge of new medications, as well as potentially using medications approved for other conditions in an “off label” way to help you lose weight. One of the first things to look at is the medicines you already take. Most primary-care doctors don’t know (and I

mightn’t have, if I didn’t work at an institution where research and teaching about this goes on) how many medications for blood pressure, depression, epilepsy and diabetes (among others) can cause weight gain as a side effect. Sometimes switching medications can help a great deal. Most primary-care doctors are uncomfortable prescribing medications for weight loss, especially after the disaster caused by the combination of dexfenfluramine and phentermine (fenphen). There are newer and safer medications now.

Affording the cost of your kid’s sports Kids like to play and that’s a good thing. Playing promotes health and fitness and being part of a sports team of any kind is not only a terrific way to make friends, it’s also a lot of fun. But playing sports can be costly and not everyone can pay for it. A recent survey published in The Globe and Mail estimates the annual cost of children’s sports at just under $1,000 per child – and as your child becomes more developed and competitive, those expenses increase. Yet many Canadians do not build these costs into their budgets – simply winging it and hoping to pay each bill – for travel expenses, summer training camps, new uniforms and equipment and on and on – as it comes up. So you won’t have to wing it, here are some tips for making sure

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Someone from your past could arrive with welcome news concerning your future. Meanwhile, avoid taking sides in a workplace confrontation until you have more facts to go on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A decision about a relationship could have longer-lasting consequences than you might imagine, so be sure of your facts before you act. A trusted friend can help. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A strained relationship could be restored with more personal contact between the two of you. Letting others act as your gobetween only adds to the ongoing estrangement. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) New facts could mean taking a new path toward a goal you’ve been hoping to reach. However, be sure all your

those games don’t break the bank. • Track your expenses. The first step to being in control of the costs is understanding how much you spend — so write down all costs associated with your child’s sport. (Also keep the registration or membership receipts for your kid’s sporting activities. You may be eligible for the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit on the first $500 of eligible expenses per child on your 2016 tax return. This refundable tax credit will be eliminated in 2017.) • Share a ride. Save money by splitting the expenses of travelling to practices, games and tournaments with other families. • Pack a lunch. Instead of eating while on the road, bring coolers filled with fresh food from home. • Buy second-hand. As your kids outgrow their equipment, look for stores that sell gently-used

questions are answered before you undertake to shift directions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good week for all you fine Felines to turn your attention to some important considerations, such as your health, your job situation and the status of important relationships. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Avoid making a quick decision about a matter that needs more study. Keep your mind open for possibilities, even if they don’t seem plausible — at least not yet. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might welcome the emphasis on openness in relationships that mark this period. But it’s a good idea

to avoid sharing personal secrets with people you hardly know. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) There are still some questions that need to be asked and answered before you can feel confident enough to make a potentially lifechanging decision. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some lingering effects from a now largely resolved workplace confrontation could make things difficult for you. Act on this before it becomes serious. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) You feel you’re finally in control of your own life after months of making compromises and concessions you never felt comfortable with. Congratulations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) No sooner do you decide to pass on one job offer than

ROACH WRITES: After I wrote about essential tremor, several people who suffer from this condition, as well as several clinicians, wrote to tell me about a product called Liftware that helps many (but not all) people with hand tremor eat with less difficulty. It’s a handle that you can attach a fork or spoon to, and it reduces the amount of shaking. It’s available at liftlabsdesign.com. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. Metabolic conditions such as Cushing’s disease and hypothyroidism need to be looked for. Careful evaluation of the diet — using food diaries and often enlisting the expertise of a registered dietician nutritionist — is of paramount importance. Since there is so much misinformation, I almost always find people eating unhealthy foods and avoiding healthy ones, to their detriment. You should be congratulated on finding an exercise that you can do, and be encouraged to do so every day. Finally, since you are 100 pounds or so overweight, your doctor also should consider the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery, the most effective way (and only reliable one for most people) of losing that much

HARVEST REPORT

Dust at dusk

When an evening is calm the dust of havest coming from combines as they cross a field can linger much like fog hanging over a lake. The result is a

rather tranquil scene as evening descends, as seen just of east of Yorkton earlier this fall.

Still crop to be harvested in province Despite the weekend rain, producers were still able to make progress with harvest. Seventy per cent of the 2016 crop is now combined and 22 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. The fiveyear (2011-2015) average for this time of year is 79 per cent combined. Regionally, harvest is furthest advanced in the southwest, where producers have 79 per cent

of the crop in the bin. Seventy-seven per cent of the crop is combined in the southeast, 61 per cent in the east-central region, 65 per cent in the west-central region and northeastern regions and 64 per cent in the northwest. Some producers in the southern regions have completed harvest. Ninety-eight per cent of the field peas, 93 per cent of the lentils, 68 per cent of the durum, 67 per cent of the spring wheat, 61 per cent of the canola

and 20 per cent of the flax have been combined. Rain was general throughout the province, with areas in the west-central and northwestern regions receiving lesser amounts than other regions. Most areas reported receiving at least 25 mm of rain or more. The greatest amount of rainfall, 63 mm, was reported in the Moosomin area. The Carnduff area received 56 mm, Limerick 38 mm, Webb 30 mm, Foam Lake

51 mm, Bethune 42 mm, Nipawin 33 mm, Biggar 13 mm and Meadow Lake 9 mm. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 17 per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate and two per cent short. The recent rain has slowed harvest in some regions, as topsoil was only just starting to dry out enough to support equipment. Areas around Porcupine Plain, Tisdale and Arborfield are reporting that 49 per cent of crop-

land acres have surplus moisture at this time. Areas around Canora, Preeceville and Foam Lake are reporting that 36 per cent of cropland acres have surplus moisture at this time. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as seven per cent surplus, 87 per cent adequate and six per cent short. Strong winds have blown around some canola swaths, resulting in shattering losses. Standing water from the

recent rain also caused some crop damage this past week. Bleaching, sprouting, fusarium and earth tag are causing grade loss. Producers are busy harvesting, hauling bales and controlling weeds. Richardson expanding base in Sask. Richardson International Limited has announced it is expanding its Richardson Pioneer retail crop input network across Western Canada. Richardson plans to begin construction on the first three new crop inputs centres in Saskatchewan this fall and will be announcing additional new builds across the Prairies. “We are continuing to aggressively invest in our crop inputs business to grow our Richardson Pioneer network and expand our reach to offer our services to more customers across Western Canada,” says Tom Hamilton, Vice-President, Agribusiness Operations. “We are excited to invest in these three locations in Saskatchewan now and plan to announce additional new builds in the coming months.” Richardson Pioneer’s newest crop inputs facilities will be located in Pasqua, near Moose Jaw; Elrose; and at Wakaw, Saskatchewan. While Pasqua and Elrose are brand new locations for Richardson Pioneer, the new crop inputs centre in Wakaw will replace Richardson Pioneer’s current facility at that location. These three areas in Saskatchewan were identified as opportunities within the Richardson Pioneer network as part of Richardson’s ongoing capital expansion plan. Richardson Pioneer’s three new crop inputs sites will each have high-speed fertilizer blending capabilities, modern offices and a 6,000-square-foot, AWSAcertified warehouse to provide customers with leading crop inputs products and best-in-class service. Construction is expected to begin this fall with the intention to have all three new facilities fully operational by later 2017.

“We look forward to being part of the communities of Pasqua and Elrose and improving our business in Wakaw, providing local producers with access to stateof-the-art crop inputs facilities and full agronomic services through our Crop Watch agronomy team,” says Hamilton. Richardson Pioneer is a division of Richardson

‘Be Somebody Be an Agvocate’ campaign launched Agriculture More Than Ever launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging people in the agriculture industry to lend their voice to the food conversation in Canada. “Be somebody — Be an agvocate” is a multifaceted campaign that encourages everyone involved in the agriculture industry to be an agvocate by joining social media and having in-person conversations to shape people’s relationship with agriculture. “Being an agvocate is about adding your voice to the food conversation in positive, engaging and relatable ways,” said Candace Hill, manager of Agriculture More Than Ever, an industry-led initiative. “The campaign is about helping everyone involved in agriculture to connect with the public by sharing their story.” Surveys continue to show that farmers are one of the most trusted voices when it comes to providing information about farming practices

and food production, so it makes sense they be the face and voice for agriculture, according to Hill. A recent survey by the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity showed 93 per cent of consumers know little or nothing about Canadian farming practices, and a majority (60 per cent) of those respondents indicated they want to know more about farming practices. “The campaign focuses on showing the real faces of people in agriculture with a strong call to action for everyone in the industry to get involved in the food conversation, no matter how big or small their contribution,” Hill said. As part of the campaign, individuals who work in various sectors of agriculture submitted video clips of themselves reading a script encouraging others to get involved in telling the real story of Canadian agriculture. Those clips were compiled into a video. “The video features

people from across the country who have come together to add their voice to the food conversation,” she said. “Everyone in agriculture is “somebody” and has a role to play. Watching and sharing the video is just one way individuals can get involved, but there are many ways for people to show their love, pride and passion for an industry.” Agriculture More Than Ever has attracted over 470 partner organizations and 2,500 individuals committed to creating positive perceptions of agriculture. Launched more than four years ago, Agriculture More Than Ever’s goal is to encourage those involved in agriculture to speak up and speak positively about the industry. To view the new Agriculture More Than Ever video and learn about other ways to participate, go to AgMoreThanEver.ca, or follow the conversation on Twitter @ AgMoreThanEver

Agriculture education takes local to Sweden By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Like hundreds of university students Laura Weinbender is heading back to classes. However, in Weinbender’s case it will require a transatlantic flight. “I will be attending the Swedish University of Agricultural sciences (short form SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden,” explained the Canora-area student. The opportunity is one Weinbender accessed through the University of Saskatchewan which offers exchange programs to countries all over the world. “I will be there (Sweden) for one semester taking classes that will go towards my degree,” she said. Weinbender said the opportunity was just too good to pass up. “I actively searched foreign options,” she said. “I heard about exchange from the U of S website, and afterwards talked to people about it. Everyone I have talked to that has taken part in an exchange program has loved it, which is what sparked my interest. “I had met with a few advisors, and the exchange coordinator about it, and then I had to apply to get accepted into

I do not think that I will foresee that as a challenge, but I will see it as a learning experience.” And it is the experience Weinbender most looks forward too. “This experience is only going to happen once in a lifetime,” she said. “I really want to be able to broaden my knowledge about, Sweden, Europe, and the world. “I am hoping that I will grow personally since I will have to adjust to a new culture, and lifestyle. “As well, I love meeting new people, so this is the perfect opportunity to meet people who could be lifelong friends. To say the least, this new adventure is going to be filled with opportunities and experiences that I will never forget, and I am going to soak up as much as I can.” The term goes until middle of January, but Weinbender is hoping to be home early. “Your professors may be able to let you write finals early, so I am hoping to be home for Christmas,” she said.

The story of Canada’s northern port By Dean Harder Most of us take for granted that the majority of our roads and highways are publicly funded and built at cost in order to serve the overall public good. There is no clamour asking why those roads are not being given away to private companies to let road barons profit from them. For good reason! If anything, recent events in Northern Manitoba should prove to us that like highways, the fate of crucial rail lines should not be in the hands of private companies. The Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway that serves it have real potential to benefit the communities they connect to – if they are publicly owned and managed to serve Canada’s greater public interest. Both are vital infrastructure with important and irreplaceable roles in both our economy and social fabric. Churchill is the Canadian prairies’ only ocean port. It provides an additional route for grain transportation. Utilizing

this corridor reduces pressure on the West Coast and Thunder Bay to help prevent logistics bottlenecks when there is a bumper crop. From a farmers’ standpoint, the port can also counteract the inefficiencies caused by vertically integrated grain companies shipping exclusively to their own grain terminals at Canada’s other ports. Shipping grain over the rail line that serves Churchill reduces maintenance costs for prairie highways in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It also supports the line’s economic viability, providing northern residents and tourists a gateway to the North that is less expensive and more environmentally-friendly than air travel. In spite of all these benefits, the future of both the port and the railway are uncertain. Omnitrax abruptly closed the Port of Churchill on July 25, 2016 and the fate of the rail line that connects to the rest of Canada is now up in the air. Today’s situation is the result of a danger-

ous domino effect set in motion by Omnitrax’s negligence combined with a series of missteps by different governments. It can be traced back to the privatization of Canadian National Railway in 1995, the giveaway of the Hudson Bay rail line to Americanowned Omnitrax in 1997 and the removal of the farmer-run single desk Canadian Wheat Board in 2011. To secure the port’s benefits for future generations of Canadians, the federal government should take back ownership of both the Port of Churchill and the Hudson’s Bay Railway. In addition, it needs to take measures to ensure the port remains viable for the communities connected to the rail line and farming communities that are within its catch basin. Northern communities, local workers, businesses and farmers who rely on the line must be part of the decision-making for the publicly-owned entity that replaces Omnitrax

as owner and manager of these facilities. As they do with roads and highways, the federal and provincial governments must commit to investing in the rail line and port infrastructure in perpetuity. There should never be risk of potential selling off of line assets. An adequate grain catch basin fed by both

CN and CPR railways must be secured to bring grain to the rail line serving Churchill. Storage facilities must be secured, and if necessary, built, to ensure grain is available to feed the port during its operating season. The railway must be set up to actively facilitate rapid grain movement in years with large crops. Allocating railcars

to serve Churchill must be a priority during its active season. The mere existence of the needed facilities is not enough, however. Grain movement is essential for port viability. Therefore a grain logistics oversight system must be in place to make all the parts work together effectively. A farmerContinued on Page A19

Learning about pizza Grade 4 classes from Saltcoats, Dr. Brass, Churchbridge, St. Paul’s, St. Mary’s, Invermay and Canora schools were in Yorkton this past Tuesday and Wednesday to help harvest the Pizza Farm. This past June these students helped to plant the Pizza Farm as part of an educational program aimed at teaching kids about where their food comes from and how Agriculture feeds the world. There are nine such Food Farms in the province modelled after the Pizza Farm that was started in Yorkton four years ago by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agriculture in the Classroom. The fall Harvest sessions included stations that featured a dairy calf, pigs, wheat and canola,

tomatoes & peppers, and a combine. All of which are involved in producing the ingredients needed to make pizza. The Pizza Farm program follows up the harvest by conducting inclassroom pizza making session where students get to use some of the ingredients they harvested to make their very own pizza. The Food Farm Program has enjoyed overwhelming success and positive feedback from students and teachers in that it creates valuable connections to grades 3 & 4 curriculum as well as creating a real awareness of the important role that Agriculture plays in producing the food we eat. It’s an exciting and engaging venue to take students on a journey from Farm to Fork.

Flax oil making inroads into China By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The word ‘Yorkton’ has become something of a selling point for a local firm accessing a potentially massive market. TA Foods is now bottling cold pressed virgin flax oil under the label ‘Yorkton Flax Oil’. The label is for a particular distributor who is selling the product into the Chinese market. “It’s one new label specifically for China,” said Michael Popowich, vice-president at TA Foods. Popowich said Canadian products are trusted in China for quality, and the label simply builds on that, being a label specific to the city and of course country, to build on the already established trust of consumers there. The selling point of being a product from Canada “is a big part of it,” in terms of attracting Chinese consumers, he said. And attracting those consumers is a growing part of business for TA Foods. “It’s a growing market for us for sure,” said

Popowich, adding the entire Pacific region shows potential, although China leads the way. Popowich noted the Chinese economy has slowed, but the sheer size of the market, for a product such as flax oil, still makes it lucrative in terms of export potential. He noted a single large Chinese city would be potentially the same market size as all of Western Canada. “It’s potential, it’s definitely the biggest one,” he said, adding the health aspects of flax oil have helped carve out a market niche even as the economy there has slowed. As it stands about 85 per cent TA Foods’ business by dollar value heads to export markets, with about half of those exports headed to the United States and half to countries in Asia, said Popowich. The challenge though is building a market which is half a world away. Popowich did note when it comes to their products TA Foods are doing everything here in Yorkton, from crushing the flax seed to extract

the oil, to bottling the oil, to distributing it to markets worldwide. To help facilitate those efforts the firm recently purchased the former Western Grocers building on Broadway Street in the city to use for warehousing, in particular the on-site cold storage for the oil. Popowich said the company will not utilize the entire space, so they will be providing warehousing for other businesses as well. The need for additional space reflects on the growth of TA Foods, which was recognized in 2015 when the firm was presented the ABEX award for Growth & Expansion Award by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. This year TA Foods are finalists for two ABEX awards; Export, and Priority Focus. Priority Focus the newest ABEX category and in its second year.

The award is presented to a business which has gone above and beyond in demonstration of business excellence, in an area that mirrors a select Saskatchewan Chamber policy priority. This year the focus is on immigration. Popowich said immigration has certainly been important to the firm with 17 or its current 22 employees coming to Canada from the Philippines. He noted that they started with half a dozen immigrant workers a few years ago, and those workers have helped provide key contacts when additional personnel were required. Hopefully we’ve been good to them and they’ve been great for us,” he said. The word ‘Yorkton’ has become something of a selling point for a local firm accessing a potentially massive market. PORT Continued from Page 17 first orderly marketing agency is needed to secure a strong export market for grain handled through Churchill, along with good prices for farmers. Logistics oversight, together with the marketing agency, would ensure the Port’s viability by meeting or exceeding a 500,000 tonne annual throughput. In short, we need to replicate the function of the single-desk Canadian Wheat Board to ensure both the railway and the port are viable by providing a consistent and reliable flow of grain through the port. Assurances from the private grain merchants are paper thin and do not benefit farmers’ bottom line. With the right plan, the Port of Churchill can be a thriving entity that supports thousands of people and hundreds of businesses while bringing vibrancy to our North. Governments must ensure that the rail line and Port of Churchill belong to the people and must not be sold off or given away ever again. Churchill is our Canadian Prairie and Northern port. We are all Churchill. Dean Harder is a National Farmers Union board member. He farms with his family on their grain farm near Lowe Farm, Manitoba. OSTAFIE - Donnie. Oct. 7, 2015. Today is the anniversary of the day you left this earth. I know all who knew you appreciated your worth, because no one was more caring than you my dear husband. You radiated that love until the very end. As we think about you every day, I know when you left you took part of us away. I know you will be caring for friends on the other side. But I hope you can see there is a love for you we cannot hide. -Your loving wife, Janet & boys.

Did you know? A prediabetes diagnosis means you have higher than normal blood glucose levels, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Excessive glucose in the blood can damage the body over time, and those diagnosed with prediabetes are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the majority of people with prediabetes do not have any symptoms. The condition is typically revealed after blood tests indicate blood glucose levels are higher than normal. Being overweight and living an inactive lifestyle are two of the biggest risk factors for prediabetes, and doctors may recommend that men and women 45 and older, especially those who are overweight, be tested for prediabetes. Those who have been diagnosed with prediabetes will not necessarily develop diabetes down the road. In fact, the NIDDK notes that men and women who lose at least 5 to 10 percent of their starting weight can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and may even be able to reverse prediabetes.

MANHATTAN CLAM CHOWDER Chowder clams are flavorful but tough and must be chopped after cooking. Substitute cherrystone clams, if you like; there’s no need to chop them. •5 cups water •36 chowder or cherrystone clams, scrubbed •5 slices bacon, finely chopped •1 large (12 ounce) onion, finely chopped •2 large carrots, peeled and finely chopped •2 stalks celery, finely chopped •1 pound (3 medium) all-purpose potatoes, peeled and finely chopped •1/2 bay leaf •1-1/4 teaspoons dried thyme •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •1 can (28 ounces) plum tomatoes •2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley •3/4 teaspoon salt In nonreactive 8-quart saucepot, heat 1 cup water to boiling over high heat. Add clams; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer until clams open, 5 to 10 minutes, transferring clams to bowl as they open. Discard any clams that have not opened. When cool enough to handle, remove clams from shells and coarsely chop. Strain clam broth through sieve lined with paper towels into bowl. In same clean saucepot, cook bacon

over medium heat until browned; add onion and cook until tender, 5 minutes. Add carrots and celery; cook 5 minutes. Add clam broth to bacon mixture in saucepot. Add potatoes, remaining 4 cups water, bay leaf, thyme and pepper; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10 minutes. Add tomatoes with their liquid, breaking them up with side of spoon, and simmer 10 minutes longer. Stir in chopped clams and heat through. Discard bay leaf and sprinkle with parsley. Taste for seasoning; add salt as needed. Makes about 12 cups, or 12 firstcourse servings. • Each serving: About 117 calories, 6g total fat (2g saturated), 5g protein, 12g carbohydrates, 12mg cholesterol, 342mg sodium.

tuce and apple salad to go with it. •2 tablespoons Dijon mustard •1 tablespoon honey •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper •4 pieces salmon fillet with skin (about 6 ounces each) Baby Lettuce Salad •1 Gala or Red Delicious apple •2 tablespoons seasoned rice vinegar •1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil •1/8 teaspoon salt •1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper •1 bag (5 ounces) baby lettuces •Lemon slices for garnish Prepare salmon: Heat

broiler. In small bowl, with fork, mix mustard, honey, salt and pepper. Place salmon, skin side down, on rack in broiling pan. Spoon the mustard glaze over the fillets. Place pan in broiler 5 to 7 inches from source of heat, and broil salmon 8 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork (do not turn salmon over). Meanwhile, prepare salad: Core and cut apple into thin wedges. In large bowl, mix vinegar, oil, salt and pepper. Add baby lettuces and apple wedges and toss to coat. Arrange salmon and salad on 4 dinner plates. Garnish with lemon slices. Makes 4 main-dish servings.

TIP: Leave the skin on the salmon to protect bottoms of the fillets — if anything sticks to the broiler rack, it will be the skin.

• Each serving: About 385 calories, 22g total fat (4g saturated), 33g protein, 14g carbohydrate, 2g fiber, 89mg cholesterol, 585mg sodium.
