John and Jane have always been career minded, even while they attended university. He was always into IT, so he worked in computer stores which then led to programming gigs in a few big companies before he decided to launch his own consultancy firm. In each of his positions, he took advantage of employer pension plans, employee stock purchasing programs and other employer-sponsored savings plans. Jane did too. She started out as a cashier at a large grocery store and then worked towards the financial industry job she has now. And like John, Jane participated in every employer-sponsored savings programs that was available. To her it really was a matter of save it and forget it. And that’s exactly what they both did: they completely forgot about their accumulated savings that were parked in dormant accounts. It all came to light just after they moved into their new house. When John was unpacking boxes in his new office, he came across a folder full of statements addressed to Jane and a few addressed to him. All of a sudden John and Jane were $15,000 richer. Could they have more money at their old employers just quietly growing in dormant accounts? They made an appointment with their financial advisor, Gina, to find out how they could handle this unique problem. Gina, we just found $15,000 in saving that have been sitting dormant. Can you help us figure out what to do about this? Sure! Usually the average number of years an employee can spend in one company is less than seven years. So there’s a potential that you could be at four or five companies throughout your career. That could mean you may have several RSPs, pensions, employee stock plans or other savings accounts associated with those old jobs. If you provide me with a list of your old employers, I can give each a call to see if you have any other outstanding accounts. Once we know the lay of the land, we can start consolidating. Can you tell us more about the consolidation process? I will analyze all the different accounts and divide them into two different kinds of accounts: straight savings and retirement savings. The advantages of consolidating are: 1. You will have a better picture of your entire net worth which helps with your financial planning. 2. Now you might be further ahead towards reaching your retirement savings goals. 3. Tax planning made easy. When you retire, you’ll know exactly what your income will be which will allow you to predict what you will owe in taxes. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. 21st Annual Gala raises $38,600 “Our Denim and Diamonds Gala was a great evening, raising nearly $40,000,” said Diane Rusnak, Chair of The Health Foundation.
“We had 260 guests and raised a lot of money for the new equipment need in the ICU.” Anytime you can raise
money and the people making donations are having fun and enjoying themselves, you must be doing something right,” continued Mrs. Rusnak. This Gala evening was very successful; the people who attended had fun and were able to dance to a live band.” “Part of the Gala
experience is the ambience, with the beautiful decorations and the little extras that you don’t see at any other event. Gala is meant to be a special night out, and our committee works hard every year to create something special and memorable for our guests.” In 21 years A Gala
Evening in Yorkton has raised just over $560,000, all of which has been used to purchase medical equipment for the Sunrise Health Region. “We have strong results like this because we have such great support from the business community, with great sponsorship and many
donations to our silent auction. This year $14,235 was raised by the silent auction. In addition to the silent auction Sherring Diamonds donated a beautiful matching diamond necklace and earrings that was raffled off. We raised $2,300 on the raffle.
The Members of the Gala Evening organizing committee are: Chair, Diane Rusnak, MaryAnn Trischuk, Carrie Powell, Sandra Ruff, Vange Vallaster, Maxine Woodward, Wendy Zaporosky, Bridgette Carl, Kara Molnar, Cindy Dutchak, Ross Fisher and Debbie Blommaert.
Crop insurance pays on claims for 2016
Inclement weather over the summer and throughout the fall has extended the harvest season and impacted quality on crops, particularly lentils, peas and wheat. Losses in quality and quantity are insurable under the Crop Insurance Program. The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation reminds producers the sooner they submit their production declaration and file their claim, the sooner SCIC can assess the claim and issue a
payment. Producers are reminded the deadline to complete their production declaration and file a claim is November 15. Post-harvest claims are filed when a producer’s actual crop yield and/or quality does not meet their coverage level. To date the Crop Insurance program has paid 887 post-harvest claims providing $43 million in support. The fiveyear average (2011-2015) for post- harvest claims is 7,520 paid providing $170
million in payments. Even if a producer is not in a claim position it is important to complete their production declaration. This information helps producers build their individual coverage as it reflects their growing experience over the past ten years and impacts a producer’s overall coverage. Ease of filing from a home computer or a mobile device can be realized online with CropConnect. Through
CropConnect producers can file all their production and register a claim. Producers can also complete their form, mailed to them in September, and return it to their local Crop Insurance

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old man, 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighing 223 pounds. Last January, my weight was up to 247, so I decided to diet and exercise in order to lose the excess. My goal is to get below 200. In a recent visit to my physician, I told him that I was losing weight by restricting my total calories to 1,700 per day on a seven-day running aver-
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m really excited — my mom has decided we can get a kitten! We’re going to adopt one from the local shelter. Do you have any advice on picking the best cat? — Jaynah and Sherar in Poughkeepsie, New York DEAR JAYNAH AND SHERAR: First of all, congratulations! It’s exciting to get your first pet. And I’m glad you’re choosing to adopt from a shelter. While I’ve always liked to say that we don’t pick cats, they pick us, that’s not entirely true. Sometimes it takes a little time to find that perfect fit. With kittens, it’s even harder, because they’re almost universally cute. When you visit the shelter, ask if you’re allowed to play with the kittens before choosing one, or to observe them
age (so I can go out to eat once in a while). I am trying to keep my fats below 30 percent on a seven-day calorie basis, and I am trying to keep total carbs to 50 percent or so. My physician told me that my diet plan was “old-school.” He said that I should eliminate all sugars and all grains. I should eat a couple of ounces of meat and/or eggs. And I should eat as many fruits and vegetables as I want without worrying about calories. In your opinion, should I follow his advice, or should I continue with what has been working for me? — J.B. ANSWER: Your physician is right that counting calories is “old-school.” However, if you can stay
with it, it will work. If you expend more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. That is the energy balance equation, and there are no exceptions. However, the issue isn’t so straightforward as you might think from that statement. Fat and protein make almost everybody feel more full and satisfied, comparing meals of the same calories, than a high-carbohydrate meal. Plain, fresh fruits and vegetables, absent of dips or sauces that load on the calories, are low in calories, in most cases, and can be eaten in relatively large amounts without slowing
weight loss much. I also agree with your physician that simple sugars and processed grains add calories without a lot of real nutrition and don’t fill you up much (and may even make you hungrier later). I don’t think all grains need to be avoided: The fiber present in whole grains also improves satiety, and I recommend that all grains be whole grains. However, some people find that eliminating grain entirely helps them. By all means, you can stick with what works for you. That being said, most people find that by adding a little healthy pro-
tein and fat, you can stick with your eating plan with less hunger or discomfort. Losing weight can make people feel a little uncomfortable. But I think you will find that the eating plan he outlined, while still keeping an eye on calories, will allow you to reach your weight goals and keep you on track while still feeling well. DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you place plastics in the dishwasher? I have read that dangerous chemicals can be released from the plastic. — R.E. ANSWER: Most plastics are safe, but you
should put only plastics labeled “dishwasher safe” in the dishwasher, and placing on the top rack reduces the heat the plastic is subjected to. Never reuse any plastic that has been partially melted by dishwasher or microwave. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. in a play area outside of their cages. Note how they interact with each other and with humans. Are they confident or aggressive? Standoffish, or anxious and shy? Will they play with a toy or string that is dangled in front of them? Note the kittens’ general health. It’s easy to spot a potential problem if a cat is listless, won’t play, has visible sores, shakes its head frequently or has trouble walking. Most shelters are open about a cat’s known health problems. That way potential owners can decide if they want to take on the costs of bringing an adopted cat back to health. Again, take your time and don’t commit to one kitten immediately. If there are multiple shelters in the area, check them out as well. And of course, once you’ve found your new friend, be sure to schedule a checkup with a veterinarian to give it the healthiest start with your family. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Finding Dory” (PG) — The forgetful blue fish from “Finding Nemo” leads this animated sequel on a quest to find a family she suddenly starts to remember. Dory (Ellen Degeneres) is the same friendly, fasttalking blue tang, only now she has flashes of memory, of parents and a home. Nemo and Marlin (Hayden Rolence and Albert Brooks) assist Dory on her quest, which includes befriending a difficult octopus (Ed O’Neil) and a whale shark (Kaitlin Olsen). Fans of the original will have plenty to love about this sequel. The movie stands on its own as a better-than-decent Pixar movie, which puts it in good company. However, it suffers from the familiarity of sequels: It’s different enough to be interesting, but you can see how closely it’s modeled after the original. Still, the laughs are there and the emotional moments hit their mark — almost too well. “Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams” (1990) (PG) — (It’s a slow week for new releases, so we’re looking at some older movies coming out on re-release from here to the bottom.) This late-career project from Akira Kurosawa shows a series of loosely connected dreams. Some of them have a folklorefeel, while others seem a little preachy and indulgent. You have to appreciate the scope of it — we see forest spirits, childlike wonder, adult anxiety and a post-apocalyptic landscape. As one of the mostrevered and influential directors in movie history, it’s OK if some of Kurosawa’s projects didn’t hit it big. Best known for his Samurai epics and introspective dramas, “Dreams” shows Kurosawa stepping deep-

Scene from “Finding Dory” er into the surreal. While not much of a critical or commercial success, and burdened by some hokey special effects, the film still has its moments that tickle something in
your brain that values the inherent goodness of imagination. “Punch Drunk Love” (2002) (R) [Criterion Collection] — It’s been a rough decade for Adam
Sandler. Well, worse for moviegoers with fond memories of his juvenile hilarity and pretty awesome for Sandler, who’s been picking projects based on where he’d like to vacation and which friends he wants to hang out with. About 12 years ago we got a shock when Sandler was really, really good in an offbeat romance where he doesn’t play himself. Instead of a loudmouth manchild or a harried dad, The Sand Man tones it down to play a quiet outsider who falls hopelessly in love. Now it’s been re-released under the Criterion Collection banner, which champi-
ons movies of rare quality, and likely won’t have many more features from former-SNL cast members. “C.H.U.D.” (1984) (R) [Definitely Not Criterion Collection] — Before the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there was another gang of acronymed monsters dwelling in the sewers beneath New York, and they were much less radical. Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers terrorized the early-’80s version of NYC, the one where everything looks like it has a fresh layer of used motor-oil, and the fastest-growing industry apparently was stand-
ing around garbage-can fires. John Heard (big at the time) and Daniel Stern (the other robber from “Home Alone”) star in this gruesome caper that’s almost bad enough to be good. Q: I really like the CBS summer series “American Gothic.” Will it back next summer? — Oliver T., via email A: “American Gothic,” a family drama centered on an affluent Boston family who must redefine themselves following the discovery that their recently deceased patriarch might have been a serial killer, has been canceled by CBS. The series starred Juliet Rylance, Virginia Madsen and Justin Chatwin. Another summer series getting the
ax is “BrainDead,” the political-horror satire that starred Elizabeth Winstead, Danny Pino, Tony Shalhoub and Aaron Tveit. Neither series performed as well as expected, and paled by comparison to “Under the Dome,” which had a successful three-season summer run on CBS a few years back. Q: I heard on the news that Journey is up for induction into the Rock
A: The 2017 nominees were just announced, and they are: Bad Brains, Chaka Khan, Chic, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, The J. Geils Band, Jane’s Addiction, Janet Jackson, Joan Baez, Joe Tex, Journey, Kraftwerk, MC5, Pearl Jam, Steppenwolf, The Cars, The Zombies, Tupac Shakur and Yes. This year might be the toughest class yet, and I have no idea how they will be able to narrow them down to anywhere from five to seven inductees. If I had my way, I’d

I purchased a big box of blank greeting cards at a crafts store for a great price and attached photos to the card fronts. This has turned into a fun project for me and a keepsake for the recipients.” — V.R. in Washington • Did you know that pillows need to be replaced every year? You can keep your pillow performing better by using a pillow-protecting pillowcase, and fluffing in the
dryer for 10 minutes on low heat every so often to restore the loft of the pillow. • “I found a rack meant to hold spice jars at a garage sale. It was really neat, so I bought it but didn’t know what to do with it. When I brought it home, my roommate had the great idea to spray paint it and use it to display nail polish bottles. It’s so easy to find the right color, and they fit just right!” — M.T. in Alabama • Use empty toilet paper rolls to corral cords in storage. Q: Can you tell me if and when these programs will be returning to TV? They are: “The Curse of Oak Island,” “Under the Dome” and “Extant.” Thank you. — Ann S., Rochester, New York A: I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The History Channel’s “The Curse of Oak Island” will return Tuesday, Nov. 15, for its fourth season. The show follows brothers Marty and Rick Lagina — originally from Kingsford, the tube, for example, “JoAnn’s iPad,” “Bob’s digital camera,” etc. If you have many cords, you can store them together in a shoebox. There are very few dishes that combine tradition and innovation the way that meatloaf does. Statistically, affluent baby boomers order the entree on a regular basis when dining out. Whether it’s made from ground beef combined with pork or veal, or a more modern version featuring ground turkey or chicken, meatloaf is at the top of the list of comfort foods. It’s about time this humble dish got the recognition it deserves. It takes about 1-1/2 pounds of ground meat to make a meatloaf that serves six people. I’ve

found that “marinating” the ground meat in a bowl with 1/4 cup of water, a tablespoon of mild to medium salsa, and a tablespoon each of Worcestershire sauce and steak sauce makes for a moister, more flavorful meatloaf. I season my meatloaf with salt, pepper, minced bell pepper, garlic, onions and 1/2 of a shredded carrot, along with fresh herbs including parsley, thyme and basil or a tablespoon of dried Italian Seasoning. binder is the next component in a classic meatloaf. I use seasoned breadcrumbs or crushed crackers, and an egg. A gentle touch when combining the mixture ensures that the meatloaf will be wellseasoned, but won’t be tough. The final step in making a traditional meatloaf is adding the “gravy.” I combine ketchup with salt, pepper and medium salsa or barbecue sauce. I pour off any accumulated fat, and then slather the topping on the meatloaf halfway through the cooking process. Meatloaf isn’t a complex dish nor does it make a visually stunning presentation, but it has provided a tasty way to stretch a dollar for generations of American families. very much — what’s not to like?” MINI-MEATLOAVES The great thing about this recipe from the Betty Crocker kitchens (www.bettycrocker. com/recipes) is that the meat loaves cook in just 30 minutes and provide individual servings. This would make a great maincourse dish for children or a unique appetizer for a retro recipe party. •1/2 cup ketchup •1/2 tablespoon packed brown sugar •1 pound lean (at least 80 percent) ground beef •1/2 pound ground pork •1/2 cup Original Bisquick mix •1/4 teaspoon pepper •1 small onion, finely chopped (1/4 cup) •1 egg
until mixed; reserve 1/4 cup for topping. In large bowl, stir remaining ingredients and remaining ketchup mixture until well-combined. Spray 13-by-9-inch pan with cooking spray. Place meat mixture in pan; pat into 12-by-4-inch rectangle. Cut lengthwise down center and then crosswise into sixths to form 12 loaves. Separate loaves, using spatula, so no edges are touching. Brush loaves with reserved 1/4 cup ketchup mixture. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until loaves are no longer pink in center and meat thermometer inserted in center of loaves reads 160 F. Serves 6.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Eric summoned his employees about their attempted takeover of Forrester Creations. Steffy and Wyatt shared an awkward moment as they came face-to-face for the first time since their breakup. Despite her fight with Zende, Nicole was determined to follow through with her decision to assist Maya and Rick in having another child. Sasha tried to cheer up a heartbroken Zende, but his
HOLLYWOOD — You can rest assured that Daniel Craig will return for a fifth Bond film. After “Spectre” (2015), he said, “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists; all I want is to move on.” (Craig did 20 films before Bond and eight in between Bond films). Bond producers can bank on his success — “Casino Royale” (2006), “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “Skyfall” (2012) and “Spectre” (2015) have earned almost $3.2 billion! — and his refusal smells of wanting a bigger paycheck to do another. He’s currently filming “Logan Lucky” (due October 2017), with Channing Tatum, Hilary Swank, Adam Driver, Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough (Elvis Presley’s granddaughter) and Katherine Heigl. Also saying he’s done with a role is Hugh Jackman, who says, “Wolverine 3” is his last. Jackman has played

Now that James Cameron has set the four sequels for “Avatar,” to be released in 2018, ‘20, ‘22 and ‘23, his next project is “Alita: Battle Angel” (due July 18), starring Rosa Salazar, two-time Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz and Oscar-nominee Jackie Earle Haley. Set in the 26th century, it follows a cyborg that becomes a bounty hunter, which sounds like a rehash of Cameron’s “Terminator.” Disney has set “Frozen” as a live Broadway musical for 2018, while Universal has set the film version of the mega-hit “Wicked” for December 2019. Manitoba men fined $15,000 for hunting violations Two Manitoba men recently pleaded guilty to unlawful hunting charges in Yorkton provincial court as a result of a Turn In Poachers call and investigation. In December 2015, Ministry of Environment conservation officers in Duck Mountain Provincial Park investigated a call about three moose shot on posted land near the town of Canora. The landowner observed three moose being loaded into two trucks on his land, which was posted as off-limits to hunters. The landowner provided the officers with a Manitoba licence plate from one of the vehicles. Officers gathered evidence from the scene and had Manitoba conservation officers speak to the registered owner of the identified vehicle. Officers were able to
obtain the names of the other individuals involved in the incident. Saskatchewan conservation officers, with the help of a Manitoba conservation officer and the RCMP, executed search warrants at two residences on Pine Creek First Nation in Manitoba. DNA samples collected at the kill site and through the searches was sent away to be tested. The results of tests indicated that the samples were a positive match. As well, spent shell casings collected at the scene were determined to be fired from the firearms located at each residence. In Saskatchewan, individuals exercising Treaty rights to hunt for food require prior permission to hunt on private land. Pine Creek First Nation residents Charlie Boucher, age 55, and Georgie Lamirande, age

Chronic pain affects people all around the world, greatly impacting sufferers’ quality of life. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, recent reports have indicated more than 1.5 billion people worldwide experience chronic pain. Common complaints include lower back pain, headache, neck pain, or neurogenic pain, which is pain resulting from damage to peripheral nerves. Pain can impact people in many ways, as some people can tolerate discomfort better than others. Chronic pain may result in missed time at work, depression, anger, and an inability to live a full life. According to a recent Institute of Medicine Report: Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research, pain is a significant public health problem that costs society at least $560 to $635 billion annually.
To cope with pain, many people rely on over-the-counter and prescription medications. This reliance on drugs has helped to fuel pain medication addictions that can lead to other drug abuse. The National Institute on Drug Abuse says research now suggests that abuse of opioid pain medications may actually open the door to heroin use. Some individuals report switching to heroin because it is cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription opioids. A safer and sometimes more effective method of pain relief than opioids, physical therapy can help a person get back on track and feel much better in the process. The American Physical Therapy Association says while surgery and prescription drugs can be the best course of treatment for certain diagnoses, there is increasing evidence that conservative treatments like physical therapy can be equally
effective and cheaper treatment plans for many conditions. Physical therapy can be as effective as surgery for meniscal tears and knee osteoarthritis, rotator cuff tears and spinal stenosis, among other conditions. When a patient is prescribed physical therapy, a therapist will develop a treatment plan that addresses the specific needs of the patient. This is essentially a collaboration between patient and physical therapist. Therapists are experts in improving mobility and motion and have studied extensively to that end. Because weakness or stiffness may be contributing to pain, therapists try to address the source of the pain and relieve the pain itself. Physical therapy may include exercises that stretch the body and improve flexibility. Strengthening exercises will help work on core muscles as well as other parts of the body to prevent injury down the road. Therapy may
target specific areas of pain. Because of their expertise, therapists may be able to assess posture, gait and other attributes that may be contributing to injury and make suggestions to reduce recurrence.
In addition to the therapies mentioned, a combination of massage and other work may be included in a physical therapy plan. This may include TENS and ultrasound. According to WebMD, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, or TENS, uses a device to send a lowvoltage electric current to the skin over the area where you have pain. Ultrasound sends sound waves to the places you have pain. Both of these options may help to block pain messages to the brain and offer relief.
Chronic pain can be debilitating. However, physical therapy is often an effective way to combat chronic pain and help individuals find relief and return to living full lives.

cuppa. Different blends, beans and regions, as well as dairy and water ratios, work to create different layers, tones and flavours. The growing demand for unique and customized coffee has resulted in a number of international trends crossing borders, like Australia’s version of a latte — the flat white. With so much to know, start with the basics and work up to mastering the ins and outs of an espresso tazza d’oro, otherwise known as a cup of gold. 2. Opt for the newest technology. Gone are the
days of having to leave the house for the best espresso in town.
Integrating technology into your coffee routine makes it easy to prepare your morning java or
take guest’s coffee orders without leaving the dinner table. 3. Do your research. Coffee has become a personal trademark and a point of pride for many self-proclaimed aficionados. Before walking-thewalk, it’s important to really understand what makes a full, well-rounded cup of coffee. True coffee experts understand the fine details, including acidity, the difference between arabica and robusta beans, and how soil composition and rainfall affect the beans.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some changes might seem confusing at first, especially to an Aries whose impatience levels are pretty shaky this week. Take it one step at a time, Lamb, and soon all will be made clear. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That difficult situation you’ve been dealing with continues to call for careful handling. Avoid quickly made choices that might not stand up when they’re finally put to the test. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You still have lots of evaluating to do before you can consider making a commitment. It’s better to move cau-
tiously than to risk stumbling into a major misunderstanding. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously peevish partner offers to be more helpful with your problems. But remember: The final choice is yours. Be guided by what you feel is the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As the Big Cat, you sometimes can be pretty rough on those you suspect of betrayal. The best advice is to pull in those claws and listen to the explanation. It might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your inner voice usually guides you well. But a note of cau-
“Sit on your bottom, Face your food, Hands to yourself, It’s time to eat!” These are the words of greeting from Shannon the lunchroom aide, as elementary students eagerly enter the cafeteria every day. “It’s important to set the tone so that kids have a positive experience during this short, 25-minute block in the school day,” she told
me. “Students have to eat to be good learners.” As she glides around benches and darts between long tables, helping kids open milk cartons or loosen tight thermos lids, she reminds kids not to trade food (there are too many food
allergies) and, while it’s encouraged to visit with neighbors, to use indoor voices, please. Shannon has seen a lot of lunches. I was curious for a good story, so she told about the day she opened a thermos lid and, to her surprise, found a hot dog in hot water instead of the predictable soup or leftover spaghetti from last night’s dinner. A bun and two packets of ketchup were packed alongside. While peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are still a childhood classic, packed lunches are going through a makeover as both parents and kids take time to think healthy over the noon hour. I
did my own snooping around and noted fewer prepackaged, high-fat foods in favor of fresh fruit, whole-wheat wraps, hard-boiled eggs (with shells removed), yummy green salads, veggie dippers and dips, yogurt and milk. If your lunch-packing routine is already in a rut this fall, try these tips to get back on track: • Get kids involved: When they take ownership of making their own lunches, it’s likely the food won’t be thrown into the trash or traded. Start by shopping together. There are many healthy choices today and lots of practical lessons in
This Week Marketplace | November 11, 2016
the grocery aisle. You might ask, “Should we buy a case of individually wrapped pretzels, crackers and trail mix or instead buy big boxes and make single-size portions in reusable lunch containers ourselves?” • Create a lunchmaking “deli station”: Designate one drawer close to the breadbox, fruit bowl and refrigerator to store lunch bags and coins for purchasing milk and juice. Set aside a section in the refrigerator devoted to sandwich makings. Cut up and chill veggies at the beginning of the week, and they’ll be ready to add to lunches in the morning. “The grandkids are

coming!” tip: When a preschool grandchild comes to visit while an older sibling is at school, pack fun lunches together. Cut out sandwich shapes with cookie cutters, decorate lunch bags with stickers and enjoy a fall walk and a backpack picnic in the park. Bon appe’tot’! Men visit the doctor less than women Men and women have many similarities and many differences. Comparing the sexes can be complicated, as many such comparisons come with caveats that can explain many differences. But the disparity between how often men visit their doctors and women visit theirs defies such explanations, and men may want to start emulating women to ensure longterm health. Various studies indicate that men are less likely to visit the doctor and tend to report ill health less frequently than women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that, in the United States, women are more likely to visit the doctor and par-
ticipate in annual exams than their male counterparts. Similar studies have indicated this is not a distinctly American phenomenon. In a 2011 survey sponsored by insureBlue.co.uk, more than one in five men admitted they had not visited a general practitioner or other healthcare professional in the last 12 months. Only 14 percent admitted to being happy to see a doctor if they had to, while one third revealed that they only go to a doctor if their partner encourages them or in the case of a medical emergency. Each man is different, so there is no one reason that men tend to visit the
doctor less frequently than women. Women may place greater emphasis on preventative care than men, and women may be more comfortable with physicians because preventive care for women
typically involves visiting gynecologists more than once per year. Men who do not visit the doctor frequently may not get the preventative care necessary to defend against illness
and reduce risk of injury or disease. As a result, men may be living with undiagnosed illnesses or be self-medicating when problems arise. Men should visit their doctors at least once each year
to have general physical examinations, which should include blood tests. Such visits also provide an opportunity to discuss any concerns men might have with their physicians.
