Sharpe’s, Dupont support Churchbridge school received $2,500 from DuPont Crop Protection as part of its Full Belly! Full Mind! initiative that supports nutrition and breakfast programs across Canada. The grant will specifically be used toward the purchase of food for the nutrition program at Churchbridge Public School. Candace Mitchke-Hiller of Sharpe’s Soil Service, a DuPont Crop Protection retailer endorsed the grant. “At DuPont Crop Protection we understand that children need nutritious food to be able to concentrate in school,” said Glen Fafard, retail account manager, DuPont Crop Protection. “We are thrilled to be able to work with schools like Churchbridge Public School to ensure the children of our communities are receiving both the nutrition and the education they need for a successful future.” The school applied for the grant to
supplement its school snack program, said Lynette Kaminski, principal at Churchbridge. “We know that nutrition programs make a major difference in the lives of children,” she said. “Our snack program provides students with the tools to learn, listen and to be engaged. We are thankful to DuPont Crop Protection for their support and the significant impact it is going to have on our students.” DuPont Crop Protection makes contributions to community-based organizations on behalf of the business and employees,” a company press release stated. “Consideration for outreach grants are given to communities where DuPont Crop Protection distribution partners, employees and customers live and work and that support quality-of-life initiatives to create an improved, sustainable lifestyle for people worldwide.”

Visit a local senior with Red Cross program By Devin Wilger Staff Writer The Canadian Red Cross wants to decrease the amount of social isolation faced by area seniors. That’s the goal behind the Friendly Visiting Program, run by the Canadian Red Cross, which hopes to see more people involved in the Yorkton area. Andrea Leclair,
Friendly Visiting Coordinator, says they’re looking for both volunteers and seniors who would benefit from visits. The program has been operating since June, but they want to get larger numbers involved. The volunteers can be anyone with extra time they can spend visiting seniors in the community, by spending about an hour a week visiting a
local senior. They have to be over 18 in order to have the criminal record check and vulnerable sector check required to be a Red Cross volunteer. They are also looking for people to participate in the program. Aiming for people over 65, people can come forward themselves, but Leclair also encourages people to recommend people in the community who they
feel could benefit from a friendly visit to the program. “It could be someone who lives alone, is widowed, the family doesn’t live in the community anymore or in close proximity. It could be someone who lives on their own and is just in need of a friendly face to come and brighten their day.” It’s a simple idea, Leclair says, and it’s often something people do naturally when they are aware of a vulnerable senior in their area. What the Red Cross wants to do is have a way to connect people and make seniors in the community who need a visit to feel less vulnerable. “It’s a really simplistic idea of just visiting, people do it on their own. It’s BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB

great to have a platform in place with training for that, and that people are responding to that.” Part of the campaign to raise awareness of the program involved a presentation to city council. The response was enthusiastic from council members, with councillor Aaron Kienle noting that this was the first time he had heard of the program, but that it’s something he has done on his own when he has heard of vulnerable seniors. To Leclair, the presentation to council was a way to
get more people aware of the program they offer.
“It’s my understanding that the people on council are involved in the community in various aspects, and I thought that they would be good people to hear about our program.”
Anyone interested in the program, whether they are volunteering, signing up for visits or recommending another person is invited to contact Leclair at (306)2166602 or visit friendlyvisitingsask@redcross.ca.

Top tips to fight fatigue (NC) — Proper sleep can improve moods, increase energy levels and strengthen your immune system. However, there are plenty of factors that can impede a revitalizing slumber. While issues like work stress, family responsibilities, health or relationships are more difficult to control, there are several things you can change today to help you get a better sleep. 1. Stick to a sleep schedule. Just like with muscle memory, our bodies adjust to certain rhythms. Set up a sleep routine and stick to it, even on weekends. Perhaps a warm bath followed by a half hour curled up with a good book is just the ticket. Make sure you’re tired before trying to sleep to prevent tossing and turning. 2. Unplug earlier. Power down electronics ideally two hours before bed time. The light they emit can affect the production of a hormone called melatonin, essential for a good night’s sleep. While light of any kind can suppress the secretion of melatonin, blue light does so more powerfully. Examples of light sources high in melaton in suppressing blue light include LED light bulbs, computer monitors, laptop computers, cell phones, tablets, hand-held video games, and LED televisions. 3. Create a comfortable, quiet sleep area. Quiet is essential, especially for shift workers, whose
sleepwake cycle is atypical. Consider soundproofing your bedroom. It’s a simple DIY task that can make a big difference. Experts recommend a product called Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound insulation that absorbs sound and prevents its transmission from room to room. Install it in walls, ceilings, and between floors for best results. Select a supportive mattress, and replace it every seven years. Choose comfortable sleepwear and bedding, and don’t forget to adjust the temperature. Many sleep experts say that a cool room, around 18˚C (65˚F), makes for the best sleep.

We all hope you’re happy now, Chicago. The World Series championship ... I mean, that’s just great for you, Chicago, except for one little thing: You ruined sports. Yes, we know how much you detested being the “loveable losers.” We know how badly you wanted to be like the rest of the obnoxious winners across this great land. We hope you got your money’s worth at the bars in Wrigleyville, hope it was everything you ever wished it could be, because you took away the one charming thing left in team sports. America is now completely devoid of a loveable loser, and there doesn’t appear to be any heir apparent. In essence, the Cubs success has left no successors to the (non) crown. Green Bay fans, New Orleans Saints fans ... they have been satiated. You could have made a case for the New York Rangers fans that had to endure the chants of “1940,” or the Boston Red Sox fans that had to gnash their teeth amid jeers of “1918” while being force fed a steady diet of Babe Ruth fables. The Royals won the World Series. Hell, even the Maryland Terrapins won an NCAA basketball championship. The Cubs were the last team that everyone kind of pulled for deep, deep down (St. Louis being the notable exemption), and there is no team on the horizon that even remotely fits the bill to replace them. First of all, let’s dispel the myth that Chicago has been championship starved. This generation has seen the Second City finish first more often than any other city in America since 1990 when it comes to championships. When you add up all of the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL championship wins from 1990 to today, Chicago leads the pack with 11 wins. Boston (9), New York (9) and Los Angeles (8) bow to you, and you’re not going to get any sympathy from anyone for being forced to watch Michael Jordan win six titles. You were never losers ... and with the exception of those stuck inside O’Hare for a layover, everyone likes Chicago, so knock it off. The question now is, whom do we collectively pull for? The Buffalo Bills would have been a
good candidate, but let’s using that ridiculous, racface it, you can’t root for ist mascot, although you now make a case for the Ryan brothers. Notre BLACK can FRIDAY SALE! Dame? Nah ... win or the Browns — post-Johnlose, they air every week ny Football. I’m thinking that on NBC. Rutgers? No ... they’re too stabby in New maybe the St. Louis Blues Brunswick. You can’t root could work, or maybe the for the Cleveland Indians Sacramento Kings, but as long as they insist on they’re not sexy enough,

DEAR DR. ROACH: Six months ago, I noticed a “bald spot” on my right cheek. It is round and about the size of a 50-cent
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve had a lot of trouble training my Dalmatian, “Damian,” to behave around other dogs and people. It has really limited our outdoors time, which is very disappointing because I always envisioned bringing him around to my favorite neighborhood spots, playing in the dog park and having him in the same room with friends. What can I do to fix his bad behavior? — Jeff T., Atlanta DEAR JEFF: Although I always stress the importance of daily training in basic behavior, and how important it is to socialize puppies to both humans and other dogs, sometimes following these basics still isn’t enough. I think of training as an investment in your dog. The more often you invest, the better the returns in terms of behavior and bonding. However, you’ve got to consider the quality of that training investment, too — as well as each dog’s individual temperament and capacity for learning. Many inexperienced dog owners learn to train as they go. Some breeds
piece. I’ve never had this problem before, even though I am going bald. I am generally healthy. I am concerned that this might be an infection or cancer. There is no itching, redness or discoloration of any sort. Can you address this issue? I am worried that it will spread, and I want to know if it will grow back. — Anon. ANSWER: This sounds of dogs help them along a bit — I remember as a kid, our family’s Golden retriever “Saucy” actually kept us to a routine training and walking schedule — but other dogs aren’t so easy to train or willing to learn. They’re not bad dogs, just different. So, when your best efforts aren’t quite enough, it’s time to look for help. A professional trainer can help you figure out what’s going on with Damian, find weak spots in his training regime and offer key techniques that training books often don’t have or can’t adequately describe. Meet with a few trainers in your area to find the right one, and keep building on that investment — and relationship — with Damian. It’s well worth it. Send your questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.
very much like alopecia areata, which usually is found on the scalp, but can be in any area of the body with hair. It probably is an auto-immune disorder, and it happens frequently in people with autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto’s or Grave’s disease. People with alopecia areata should get screened for thyroid disease. It usually starts in people under 30. About half of people will have their hair regrow within a year. If the skin otherwise looks completely normal, it is very unlikely to be a cancer or infection. A dermatologist should be able to confirm the diagnosis. DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any type of corrective surgery for eye
“floaters”? — J.W. ANSWER: Floaters are bits of cellular debris that float inside the vitreous humor in the eye. The eye has no way of getting rid of these, normally. Most people are not bothered by them, and they do not need to be treated unless they are interfering with vision. However, if they do affect vision or are very bothersome, there are surgical techniques developed to deal with them. I’ve had readers write in that they had treatment with laser or with vitrectomy. At least one ophthalmologist of one of my readers has a specialty practice just treating floaters. The sudden appearance of floaters can be a sign of serious disease, especially a detached retina; this should be
evaluated immediately, especially if any changes in vision are present. DEAR DR. ROACH: For two to three months, I have been taking 17 grams of polyethylene glycol mixed in 8 ounces of water three times a week. Finally, I have found something that is effective in relieving my lifelong chronic constipation problem. In the past two months, however, I have lost approximately 10 pounds and at 5 feet, 4 1/2 inches tall, I now weigh 100 pounds. Could the weight loss be related to the use of the polyethylene glycol? — P.D.M. A N S W E R : Polyethylene glycol (Miralax and others) is a nonabsorbable, inert substance that carries water with it as it goes through your diges-
tive tract. This gives the stool more moisture and makes it easier to pass. It is considered very safe. I don’t think that it is responsible for 10 pounds of weight loss. I would be more concerned about an underlying medical issue, especially one that might cause constipation, such as thyroid disease. I also would be sure you have had a recent colonoscopy. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Slow cooker meal for cozy winter nights (NC) — Looking to put a fresh twist on entertaining at home? Set a warm and casual tone by inviting friends and family to enjoy a classic Irish supper that pairs ideally with both light and fullbodied beer. This easy recipe from GoBarley can be prepared the evening before and reheated in the oven, or assembled in the slow cooker in the morning to simmer all day. It features a host of hearty, natural
ingredients perfect for a winter meal, including barley – a superfood rich in dietary fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants. Slow Cooker Corned Beef, Barley, and Cabbage Makes: 4 servings • 1 cup (250 mL) pot or pearl barley • 1 large onion, cut into thick slices • 3 large carrots, quartered
• 1 bottle (12 oz/341 mL) beer • 1 can (10 oz/284 mL) low sodium beef broth • 3 cups (750 mL) water (approximately) • 1 bay leaf • 2 lb (1 kg) prepared uncooked corned beef brisket, rinsed • 1 small cabbage, cut into 1 inch (2.5 cm) slices • 2 tbsp (30 mL) Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp (30 mL) mayonnaise • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) freshly
ground black pepper Add barley, then onion and carrots to slow cooker. Place corned beef on top of vegetables. Pour in beer, broth, and enough water to cover beef by 1 inch (2.5 cm). Add bay leaf. Cover slow cooker and cook on high for 7 hours or until beef and barley are tender and moist. Before serving, in a saucepan over high heat or in the microwave,
Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well. Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach Makes 6 servings For the sauce: •2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil •2 cloves garlic, sliced •1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes •1⁄4 teaspoon dried basil •1⁄4 teaspoon dried oregano •2 pinches salt •2 pinches freshly ground black pepper •1⁄2 teaspoon honey For the chicken: •3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese •2 tablespoons wholewheat flour
•1⁄2 teaspoon salt, divided •1⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1⁄4 teaspoon dried basil •1-1⁄2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1⁄4 inch •2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided •4 cups baby spinach •1 teaspoon lemon juice •3⁄4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) •6 cups cooked wholegrain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medi-
um dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about
5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti.

Whisk with milk or cream, salt and pepper. Set aside. Add fillings to muffin cups, topping each one with the cheese selection. Carefully pour egg mixture in each cup, leaving a quarter inch at the top. Bake 25 minutes or until set. Place on a cooling rack for a few minutes. By Cindy Elavsky Q: A while back you had mentioned a TV series that was going to star Tom Hardy. Can you give me an update on it? — Genie P., via email A: According to FX, “Taboo” is “set in 1813, based on an original story by Tom Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. Tom plays the lead role of James Keziah Delaney, “a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire, and finds himself playing a very dangerous game.” Now we know a little bit more about it: It will premiere simultaneously on FX in the U.S. and BBC One in the U.K. in early 2017 (as of this writing, an exact date had not been
Tom Hardy revealed), and it will consist of eight one-hour episodes. Along with Tom, the series also stars Oona Chaplin (granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, and great-granddaughter of playwright Eugene O’Neill), David Hayman (“Sid and Nancy” and “The Tailor of Panama”), Michael Kelly (of “House of Cards” fame) and Jonathan Pryce (“Jurassic Park,” “Evita” and “Game of Thrones” alum). Q: I can’t wait to see “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”! I heard this will be the first movie in a series. Is that true? — Linda E., Port Charlotte, Florida A: “Fantastic Beasts
and Where to Find Them,” which hit theaters Nov. 18, is indeed the first in a series — of five films, to be exact. And it was recently announced that none other than Johnny Depp will play a major role in the second movie. In fact (SPOILER ALERT), word has it that he has a cameo in the first film. The next installment has secured a Nov. 18, 2018, premiere date, with shooting scheduled to begin
next year. Although as of this writing Johnny’s role has not been confirmed, rumors are circulating that he’ll play the role of Gellert Grindelwald, one of the most dangerous dark wizards of all time. Q: I hope you have some scoop on what to expect for season three of Lifetime’s “Unreal.” It will be back for another season, right? — Kallie Y., via email A: Yes indeed. The snarky, sexy and down-
right scary series will be back for another go-round on the set of “Everlasting,” the fictional “Bachelor”-type dating competition show that reveals all the behind-the-scenes machinations and goings-on that propel these kinds of “reality” series. Last year, “Everlasting” broke new ground by featuring the first AfricanAmerican suitor, and this year they’ll shake things up even more by
featuring the first female suitor. Series stars Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer announced the news during a Facebook Live video in late October, jokingly wondering how many of the 25 contestants their own characters will sleep with by the end of the show. • It was American science-fiction writer Hal Clement who made the following sage observation: “Speculation is perfectly all right, but if you stay there you’ve only founded a superstition. If you test it, you’ve started a science.” • Americans have more debt from student loans than credit cards and car loans combined. • For centuries, the month of June has been the most popular choice for weddings. One of the
purported reasons was that some hundreds of years ago, this time was just after May’s annual bath, so the happy couple and the guests were about as clean as could be hoped. • It is the policy of the United States government to never insure federal buildings. The rationale? With such vast holdings, it’s best for the government to assume its own risks. • As Thanksgiving approaches, you might
want to add to your vocabulary. In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, there is a term to describe the feeling of being full but unable to stop eating due to the deliciousness of the meal: “Shemomedjamo” means, literally, “I accidentally ate the whole thing.” • You’ve probably heard that classical Greek philosopher Socrates died after drinking hemlock, carrying out the death sentence imposed on him for impiety and for corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens. You might not realize, though, that the poison is not derived from the hemlock tree, but from a flowering plant known as poison hemlock, a relative of the carrot. • Oysters and worms, although unable to see
images, are able to sense dark and light. Thought for the Day:

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The BFG” (PG) — Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book gets an adaptation full of Spielbergian wonderment. One sleepy night in London, little Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) notices a huge shadowy figure peering into windows, and gets whisked away to the countryside. Turns out he’s the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance, motion-capture performing as a computer-generated giant), a gentle alchemist of dreams, and the smallest giant in his clan. Sophie’s still in danger, because BFG’s brethren are bigger and not near-
Scene from “The BFG” ly as friendly. He must protect her from lumbering brutes with names like “Childchewer,” portrayed by comedic chameleons like Jemaine Clement and Bill Hader. Spielberg has a great track record of capturing that sense of wonder and bottling it into great children’s films, but this one stumbles some in the middle. Conflicts
are watered down a bit, sequences boom and blunder when they should steadily reel you in. There’s quite a conclusion, but it takes big strides to get there. “Don’t Breathe” (R) — Three young robbers think they’ve found an easy score when they target a blind man (Stephen Lang, chief military bad guy in “Avatar”) living tillas, warmed

alone in a nearly abandoned Detroit neighborhood. Instead, they find their mark is a brutally angry veteran with keen senses, a punishing physique and the patience of a spider. Our main robber, Rocky (Jane Levy), needs cash so she can get herself and her little sister away from their abusive mother. Alex (Dylan Minnette) is scared, but too infatuated with Rocky to turn back. Rocky’s boyfriend, “Money” (Daniel Zovatto), is a doofus — the one where you’re rooting for the monster. This super-suspenseful horror show is probably the spookiest thing to come out of the current batch of fright flicks. The scares are earned. The victims/protagonists are made sympathetic, even though they’re clearly in the wrong. “Pete’s Dragon” (PG) — Orphaned and left alone
in the woods after a car accident, little boy Pete is rescued and raised by a big furry dragon named Elliot. Unlike the last film, this one takes a more awe-andwonder approach rather than goofy and musical. Robert Redford appears as the wise old man with a bit of mysticism in him, and Bryce Dallas Howard shows up as the sublime motherly figure and park ranger who finds the feral boy. He insists Eliott is real, even though he’s a dragon and turns invisible when others are near. The other pinch comes from Karl Urban as a guy who hates nature and loves money. “The Wild Life” (R) — Ever wonder what the harrowing adventure of Robinson Crusoe would be like if it were re-packaged as a “Madagascar” clone full of CG and wacky talking animals?

Well, you shouldn’t have, because somebody in Belgium heard you and now we have this. A shipwrecked human and his dog wind up on a tropical island full of quirky, forgettably annoying animals. The animals decide to help the man build a shelter, even though he’s the big-brained biped who should be able to work something out himself. Some of the visuals are great, but it’s more talking animals without much to say.
