CAFA reorganizes in local area

The Canadian Association of Farm Advisors hosted speaker Chris Corbett. In the case of selling product, Corbett said the first thing for producers to understand is that not every bushel will sell at the best prices of the year. “You’re not always hitting a home run. You don’t sell it all at the top,” he said. Corbett also touched briefly on what 2017 might bring in

terms of opportunity for producers. “We think canola will be a pretty valuable crop,” he said, adding that outlook is based on current stocks and world demand. Corbett, who hails from Melfort, SK., said there is a lot of crop, including canola still in

the field, with some producers in his area with a third of 2016 crop acres still not harvested. That situation is shorting canola supplies for both export and domestic crushers. “We’re starting to understand there’s not a lot of canola out there (in the bin),” he said. Certainly there are other vegetable oil sources, such as soybeans, but even with a big crop in that sector in 2016, prices have held up. “We’re clearing through just about every bean we can grow,” he said. Corbett said there are some early expectations there could be a record crop of canola planned in terms of planting this spring, but added with crop not harvested, and potential issues if canola is grown on canola stubble, those predictions may be over-estimated.

Camping schedule and fees for 2017

Though it may be the middle of winter, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport is already looking ahead to summertime. Planning is underway for the 2017 park season and campers will be able to book their provincial park campsites beginning Tuesday, April 4. “Saskatchewan’s provincial parks continue to grow in popularity, setting a new visitation record of nearly four million visits in 2016,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “We know that families are excited to plan their next visit and we look forward to providing them with the high quality experience they have come to expect.” As in past years, the launch will be staggered over a 10 day period, with different parks becoming available for reservations on different days. A queuing system will also be in place again this year to manage the high volume of traffic on the reservation website. The 10 day launch and queuing system has been very effective at managing demand and ensuring the stability of the reservation system over the past three

seasons. Additional information on reservations is available at www.saskparks.net/Reserve-a-Site. The schedule for reservation launch is as follows: Tuesday, April 4: Blackstrap, Pike Lake Wednesday, April 5: Buffalo Pound, Danielson, Douglas Thursday, April 6: Echo Valley, Rowan’s Ravine Friday, April 7: Duck Mountain, Good Spirit Lake, Greenwater Lake Saturday, April 8: Crooked Lake, Moose Mountain Sunday, April 9: Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park Monday, April 10: The Battlefords, Saskatchewan Landing Tuesday, April 11: Meadow Lake Wednesday, April 12: Bronson Forest Recreation Site, Chitek Lake Recreation Site, Lac La Ronge, Makwa Lake Thursday, April 13: Candle Lake, Great Blue Heron, Narrow Hills Reservations will open at 7 a.m. each day and the queuing system will begin each morning at 6:40 a.m. As customers attempt to access the reservation website between 6:40 and 7 a.m., they will be moved

to the queue waiting area. Beginning at 7 a.m., customers in the queue waiting area will receive a random number and will be admitted to the reservation website based on their unique number. As new people attempt to access the reservation website after 7 a.m., they will be placed at the end of the line. Applications for seasonal camping are now available online at www. saskparks.net. This very popular program is available at 20 provincial parks and offers the opportunity to secure a campsite from May to September at most locations. The deadline for applications is Thursday, February 2, 2017. Seasonal campsites are allocated by a lottery system and will

be awarded on Monday, February 6, 2017. There have been small increases to nightly camping, seasonal camping, group camping, reservation/change/cancellation fees and vehicle entry permits for 2017. Costs to operate the provincial parks continue to increase, and in order to provide a high level of service to an increasing number of visitors, adjustments to fees have been made. Price adjustments are as follows: $2-$4 for nightly camping, $2-$10 for entry permits, $8-$16 for group camping, $113-$125 for seasonal camping; and $2-$5 for reservation fees. Fees for swimming lessons and organized youth group camping trips have not changed. A full descrip-

tion of the new fees is available at www.saskparks.net/fees. Saskatchewan continues to be one of the most affordable places in Canada to camp. For example, a three-night non-electric camping trip for a family of four is less expensive in Saskatchewan than anywhere else in the country. Saskatchewan provincial parks also offer great value-added services, like firewood and hot showers,

for no additional charge. Provincial parks remain highly subsidized and, even with these increases, user fees still cover less than 70 per cent of the cost to operate the parks. Total funding for the provincial parks system since 2007 is more than $200 million. This funding includes capital expenditures and investment, operational funding, and parks programming, such as the popular new programs Learn to Camp and Learn to Fish.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Trolls” (PG) — The puggishly adorable Troll dolls that were a mainstay of toy boxes for decades now have their own hyper-colored animated adventure. Princess Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick) is the life of the party with the dance-and-hug obsessed Troll community until the significantly less happygo-lucky Bergens break up the party. Bergens are big grey-ish folks whose only source of joy is consuming the extra-happy Trolls. Poppy joins up with Branch (Justin Timberlake), the only glum and paranoid Troll, on a rescue mission full of music and positivity. So, sure, an all-CG hyperactive toy-based movie looks like nothing by a cynical cash-grab. But there’s nothing that cynical in the runtime itself. The movie is super-sweet with bursts of glitter and pop music, and the kind of humor where a little guy literally poops cupcakes.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of mixed signals can create an unreliable situation in which to make decisions. Best advice: Hold off on making any commitments until you’re sure you know what’s going on. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An apparently friendly offer comes with some strings attached. Be careful not to get tied into something you don’t really want. Thoroughly examine all your options before making a choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) If you’re not careful, distractions can interrupt your best efforts. Continue to focus on what you need to do. You’ll soon have lots of time to enjoy the rewards of your dedication. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Knowledge replaces suspicion as you begin to learn more about that “act of betrayal.” On a lighter note, someone close to you might be planning a pleasant surprise. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Control your sometimes-overactive jealousy gene before you find yourself saying or doing something that you could later regret. Best advice: Stop obsessing and move on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good time to loosen up and do something wonderful and exciting before your more reserved nature resurfaces. A message brings news of imminent change. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Cheer up. Things begin to improve significantly by midFebruary. However, you might still need help to get through the rest of this sometimes-difficult period. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Something you learned last week

Aisholpan Nurgaiv in “The Eagle Huntress” “Loving” (PG-13) — In the 1950s, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) are exiled from their hometown of Central Point, Virginia, because their marriage is a crime. Richard is white and Mildred black and Native American. After spending time in Washington, D.C., the couple is persuaded to challenge Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage and move back into their home. Lawyers from the ACLU (headed by Nick Kroll) take up the cause, while the Lovings shun the spotlight and focus on their day-to-day lives, waiting for justice. It’s a based-on-a-true story that steers clear of lecturing, or swelling orchestras synched with righteous speeches. The

lead performances leave no doubt that these two are uncomplicated people who should be together, and the rest of the world should catch up. “Almost Christmas” (PG-13) — It’s the first Christmas for the Meyers family since they lost their mom, and the old man of the family (Danny Glover) just wants his adult children to get along for a few days — and maybe have a decent meal. One son (Romany Malco) can’t disconnect from his rising political career, another son (J.B. Smoove) is too slick to be trusted. Two

sisters (Gabrielle Union and Kimberly Elise) seem incapable of being nice to each other, and the youngest (Jessie Usher) is secretly dealing with addiction. Mo’Nique has her comedy engine hitting all cylinders as the aunt. She and the rest of the cast show how talented performers can mine entertainment from an otherwise drab and predictable structure. “The Eagle Huntress” (G) — A 13-year-old nomadic Mongolian girl on the Eurasian steppes makes a surprisingly inspiring figure — not to mention a really cool-looking hunter. Aisholpan comes from a long line of eagle hunters, a tradition valued by her Kazakh culture, but she rattles the sturdy tradition by being a girl when almost every other eagle hunter has been a man. That doesn’t matter so much to her and her dad, who believes in her wholeheartedly. This documentary, narrated by Daisy Ridley (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”), has

an uplifting message for young women and an allaround great story for anyone. TV RELEASES

takes on new meaning as you begin to relate it to another situation in your life. It’s best to keep this matter to yourself for now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your energy level is climbing, and so is your self-confidence. Good for you, because you’ll need a good dollop of both to tackle an exciting challenge on the way. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) A family issue might interrupt a career-linked project. Try to give the matter the attention it needs, but be careful not to jeopardize your workplace situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Some self-doubt shows up this week, causing you to question your ability to handle a new challenge. But you know you can do it, and this is your chance to prove it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter requires you to be as clear and forthcoming as possible in order to avoid misunderstandings. A career move is eased with the emergence of new facts. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of reaching people that makes them feel good about themselves. You would be an excellent motivational speaker.

A good appetizer brings everyone together whether you’ve just come in out of the chill from an afternoon of sledding or you’re gathering around the TV for a raucous Super Bowl party. This Baked Black Bean dip definitely fits the bill. It’s a crowd favorite every time I serve it at home or when I bring it with a bag of tortilla chips to a potluck. It’s both chunky and creamy, with a yummy chipotle flavor that keeps you dipping for more.

• If you have a linoleum floor and get scuff marks a lot, try this trick from the pros: Take a regular tennis ball and cut a small “X” into one side. Push the top of your broom through the “X.” Now, when you are sweeping, you can turn your broom over and just lightly rub the scuff mark away with the tennis ball. It’s simple. • Experts say the best way to get your dose of daily exercise is to roll right out of bed to it. Leave

BAKED BLACK BEAN DIP Serves 12 •1 tablespoon vegetable oil •1 large onion, diced •1 teaspoon salt •2 cloves garlic, minced •1 teaspoon chili powder •1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •2 chipotle chilies in adobo sauce, plus 3 tablespoons of sauce (find canned in the Latin/ Mexican food section of your grocery store) •2 (15-1/2 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained •1/2 cup water •1 tablespoon cider vinegar •3 medium tomatoes, chopped •1-1/2 cups thawed

Did you know that you can separate items in a large casserole dish by creating a thin “log” of wadded up aluminum foil, then covering the whole dish with foil. It basically creates two (or more) sections in a glass baking dish. This way I can bake a nice piece of fish and roast veggies or whatever, all in the same dish.” — J.K. in Pennsylvania • “Add a little baking powder to your mashed potatoes when mixing. Certificates (One Year or Less) AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN Students will learn assembly, repair, service, and maintenance on all types of agricultural equipment through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on shop time.

BUSINESS The world of business involves many skills—efficient management of people, effective organization of resources, and strategic planning for growth. This certificate will give you a solid foundation in accounting, finance, marketing, economics, and more.

CONTINUING CARE ASSISTANT Learn the fundamentals required to work in care homes, home care, and community health centers. Full-time and part-time courses are available. The program consists of theory courses, lab skills, and practicum placements in special care facilities and home care.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

FIREFIGHTING If you're looking for a hot job in municipal or industrial firefighting, this is the place to start. This unique and comprehensive program provides preparation for entry-level career positions. Our program curriculum exceeds National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements by including more practice runs and hands-on activities.

HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRUCK & TRANSPORT TECHNICIAN

PRIMARY CARE PARAMEDIC Combine authentic hands-on training in pre-hospital emergency care with both hospital and ambulance practicums. Students will learn to perform physical assessments of the various body systems. You will also be able to recognize and manage medical and trauma injuries, as well as common cardiac and respiratory emergencies.

MULTI-MECHANICAL TRADES

Sparks will fly as you learn on stateof-the-art equipment and one-of-akind projects in our Canadian Welding Bureau certified shops, and write your CWB test before you graduate. You will receive training in multiple welding processes, operating fabrication equipment, using blueprints, general shop practice, and shop safety.

Combine classroom instruction and hands-on shop time. Learn how to assemble, repair, service, and maintain equipment in these mechanical trades: Heavy Equipment, Truck & Transport, Agricultural Machinery, and Automotive Service.

ELECTRICIAN

OFFICE ADMINISTRATION

This program provides entry level skill training. You will learn how to make electrical installations and perform maintenance duties according to industry standards.

Valued for their ability to bring organization and professionalism to the workplace, Office Admin graduates possess a wealth of skills related to the business office environment, with an emphasis on computer applications. Practical, hands-on training will prepare you for the demands and rewards of functioning in the modern office.

Recognized by the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics, this certificate prepares students with the necessary knowledge and skills in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until the next level of health care personnel takes over.

Power engineering technicians help keep power plants running safely and efficiently. Fourth Class graduates can go directly into the workforce or pursue their Third Class certificate and beyond. You could work in the oil patch, mining, manufacturing, energy, health, and other industries. It’s a physical job that requires problem-solving skills and a knack for working with machinery.

Learn basic training in two highdemand mechanical trades at once. Heavy duty equipment technicians work on large mobile equipment— bulldozers, cranes, graders, loaders, and earthmovers used in construction, mining, and forestry. Truck and transport mechanics work on trucks, buses, and highway transport vehicles for dealers, garages, and transportation companies.

Broaden your understanding of children’s physical, social, cognitive, creative, and emotional development. You will also develop an understanding of the importance of play as a vehicle for learning.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I just read the letter from a reader who’s been asked to return a cat to its original owner. I hope that if they send the cat back, they don’t send it by air! Animals are put in the airplane’s baggage compartment, which is not heated. I recently was on a plane with a seat display showing the outside temperature as 70 below zero. — Sarah S., via email DEAR SARAH: I’ll probably hear otherwise from a few readers, but

transporting pets on aircraft is fairly safe, and they are not exposed to subzero temperatures while in the cargo hold. Of course, we’ve all heard about pets that were injured or died while being transported, so I looked into this claim. According to Pets Express, one of several companies that specialize in transporting animals via commercial aircraft, “Air travel is as safe for pets as it is for people. Your pet will travel in a special cargo compartment [which is] both climate controlled and pressurized for your pet’s safety and comfort. It is on the same air circulation system as the cabin.” That said, traveling as cargo is not for every dog and cat. Pets that are elderly, easily stressed or have existing medical

conditions can be at risk of developing health problems or even dying during transport. Many airlines prohibit certain breeds — particularly brachy-

cephalic animals that have restricted breathing such as Bulldogs or Chow Chows, and even Burmese cats. Over the past decade,

determine how consumers’ decisions are influenced by seemingly minor changes in appearance. They presented car-buyers with a variety of webpages; everything on the pages was the same — the vehicles presented, the information provided, prices, etc. — except for the background. One group got a green background with a pattern of pennies on it, and one group got a red background with a pattern of flames. As it turns out, the background did, indeed, influence behavior: Consumers in the green-background group spent more time looking at information about cost, while those in the red-background group spent more time looking at details about safety features. • In Ireland, to ensure good luck on a child’s birthday, it was once the tradition to hold the child by the feet and bump his or her head on the floor once for each of the child’s years. SK Ombudsman says municipal council members need to know and follow conflict of interest rules S a s k a t c h e w a n ’s Ombudsman, Mary McFadyen, issued three reports on investigations into alleged confl icts of interest of municipal council members. Two of the reports are about council members in the RM of Sherwood No. 159 and one is about the former mayor of the Village of Manor. She says these cases show that confl icts of interest can arise in a wide variety of circumstances. “Residents need to know that their council members are acting only in the best interest of their community. It is not uncommon for council members to have private interests that could confl ict with their ability to carry out their public duties. That’s why it is so important for them to know what to do to address conflicts of interest.” McFadyen found that Councillor Tim Probe and former Councillor Joe Repetski were in

a confl ict of interest at a January 13, 2016 council meeting and failed to take the steps required of them under The Municipalities Act to deal with their confl ict of interest. They did not declare their conflict of interest when a delegation of voters made a presentation to the council, requesting that Sherwood take steps to recover the money paid to them under a bylaw that was quashed by the Court of Queen’s Bench in September 2015. Also, when a motion was made to take steps to recover the money paid to them, instead of declaring their conflict of interest and leaving the room, they focussed the council’s discussion on whether the motion was properly before council under Robert’s Rules of Order. The council decided to postpose the motion, so they could get legal advice about Robert’s Rules. However, if Councillors

Probe and Repetski had followed the confl ict of interest rules in The Municipalities Act, the motion would not have been postponed. At a October 28, 2016 meeting, the council decided to take steps to recover the money paid – neither Councillor Repetski nor Probe were present at the meeting. Mr. Repetski did not run in the October municipal election, so he is no longer on Sherwood’s council. McFadyen has recommended that the RM of Sherwood vote on whether to apply to the Court of Queen’s Bench for an order declaring Tim Probe to be disqualifi ed from council. The Village of Manor made a decision to sell land (that had previously been a public campground site) to the former mayor’s son. The Ombudsman found that the former mayor did not fully comply with the conflict of interest rules

Truly, I don’t believe that so-called bulletin board material matters much anymore. To wit, let’s take the recent nonsense between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin was recorded by his best player, Antonio Brown, calling the Patriots a name that refers to a human orifice. And we all know what orifice that is because we never refer to any orifice as an orifice except for this particular orifice. Now, the question is, does anybody outside of the Steelers organization care? Is this going to make a difference in their upcoming game? Will we see Erin Andrews or Suzy Kolber shoving a microphone in Tom Brady’s face after a blowout win, asking how those comments factored into the day’s results? Can you imagine? “Well, Erin/Suzy,” Brady might start, “we were planning on coming out flat ... no pun, of course.” Brady, who over the years has developed into a very well-spoken league

player, would be able to handle this with aplomb. We can imagine the further discourse. “We’ve only won our division for pretty much the entire century so far ... have won a fair amount in the postseason, quite a few Super Bowls, too ... have a genius for a coach. I’m married to one of the hottest women in the world, have a beautiful kid and live in a house that has it’s own ZIP code ... but you’re absolutely right. It wasn’t until Antonio Brown posted a video on Facebook when we all decided as a team that, hey, no ... we gotta take this game seriously!” In the “you can’t make this up” department, Bill Belichick’s real-life remarks about the incident were even better than anything myself or fictional Suzy Kolber could ever conjure. “As you know, I’m not on snapface and all that, so I don’t really get those,” Belichick said. “Not worried too much about what they put on Instachat.” Perhaps the best take in all of this was Mike Tomlin’s reaction. Tomlin is a true American treasure. He’s a biology major from William & Mary who never played a down of professional football but holds the record for youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl. He’s an incredible judge of tal-

ent and will be a part of this league for a very long time. The man deserved better than being outed by Antonio Brown. Sure, Brown’s a superstar, but he clearly isn’t in any danger of becoming a rocket scientist anytime soon. As Tomlin was quick to point out, players who act that way, who feel bigger than the team, have a habit of becoming journeymen, a history of being quick has-beens. He keeps it up and we may only be a season or two away from seeing him lifting weights in his driveway, begging for a contract, wishing he was in a locker room ... never mind being posted on the bulletin board. In the final analysis, it’s even easier to understand. Nothing Brown said made the Patriots better — it made him and the Steelers worse. Never rat out your friends (or teammates or coaches) and always keep your mouth shut. Nobody needs a bulletin board to be reminded of something like that. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

how it might affect his or her impartiality as a council member. • Abstain from voting on any question, decision, recommendation or other action council is considering about the matter. • Refrain from participating in any discussion about the matter . • Leave the room until the discussion and voting on the matter have concluded. All council members need to be aware of and follow these rules. The consequences of not following these rules are serious: council members must resign immediately and are not eligible to be nominated or elected in any municipality for 12 years. More importantly, this erodes public confi dence in our municipal government institutions. With this in mind, McFadyen is providing a

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? — T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it’s so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother’s breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast

cancer, but this isn’t proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to my ENT doctor in January complaining of muffled hearing and a loud, high-pitched noise in my left ear. He gave me a hearing test, and it showed 50 percent loss. I had an MRI and was told that I have an acoustic neuroma on my left side. This has caused me to go 50 percent deaf in my ear. The ENT doctor wants me to wait six months and see if it grows more, which I don’t want to do because I feel it should be taken out while it is small. The choices I have are to watch and wait; to have traditional surgery; or to have surgery with gamma knife or cyber knife. I would really like to just get this done and have it taken out before it causes more problems, like affecting my facial nerve, balance nerve or if it gets too close to my brain stem. I also am worried that I may go completely deaf. I am

getting a second opinion next month from a neurosurgeon. What are your thoughts on all of this? — B.D.

ANSWER: An acoustic neuroma, also called a vestibular schwannoma, is a type of non-cancerous tumor on the eighth cranial nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. These tumors usually are treated, although some authorities recommend a watch-and-wait approach if they aren’t bothering the patient, if the patient is a poor candidate for surgery or if the patient is otherwise reluctant. None of these seems to apply to you, so I would recommend proceeding with the second opinion, the neurosurgeon, whom I think is likely to recommend treatment. Progressive hearing loss is a clear indication that treatment likely would be beneficial sooner rather than later.

All the treatments you mentioned are reasonable. Cyber knife and gamma knife are ways of delivering radiation to the tumor. Since any of these can achieve the goal of preventing the tumor’s growth and any worsening of symptoms, the choice should be left to
