The recent winter storm with its snow and high winds certainly had an impact. At Madge Lake snow was piled deep enough that some residents were snowbound for 36-hours, or more. But after the roads were opened it did make for a picturesque drive.

DEAR DR. ROACH: It would be helpful if you described some of the warning signs/symptoms of a bad hip that requires replacement. I now know that such a condition does not necessarily announce itself with chronic severe pain in the hip. Indeed, what sent me to the doctor was a recurrent pain in my groin. My hip was relatively pain-free, and even then I had only a mild dis-
comfort that I thought was simply some arthritis. What I failed to appreciate over the past few years was the very gradual loss of my range of motion, leading to difficulty with simple activities, such as tying my right shoe or cutting my toenails. In retrospect, I feel rather foolish that I did not realize sooner that I was having hip problems. Perhaps you can alert others to the signs of gradual hip degeneration that fall short of acute hip pain. — B.A. ANSWER: You have done a lot of the work for me. The groin is the most common location for pain from hip osteoarthritis, but other locations — especially pelvis and knee — all can be coming from the hip. We suspect arthritis
when pain is worse after activity and improves with rest. But it is the range of motion and pain with movement that we as internists look for on exam to help us decide whether the complaints are likely from the hip joint or from another location. Pain is common with internal rotation (such as placing the outside of your ankle on the opposite knee and letting the elevated knee fall to the side). I think the main message is that pain in the hip or groin, especially if worse with exercise, suggests arthritis, and an X-ray can confirm the diagnosis. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing:
Forages as a tool to rescue saline and erodible soils Nadia Mori, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Protecting soil health and increasing crop production can go hand in hand. Perennial forages are not just a good source of livestock feed, they are also an invaluable tool in stabilizing saline soils and soils at risk of erosion. Perennial forages can reduce soil salinity. It’s not magic, just science. Salinity is caused by excessive evaporation of water containing dissolved salts. When the water evaporates at the soil surface, the salt crystals are left behind and can increase soil salinity over time. Salt-tolerant forages help lower the water table and reduce the amount of salt crystals deposited on the soil surface. Alfalfa in particular is a thirsty forage legume, and its taproot can access moisture deep in the soil. So long as salt concentrations are low
enough that seedlings can be established, alfalfa is a great legume to include in forage mixtures for saline areas. Perennial forages are overall great soil builders. The extensive root systems of forage grasses can access nutrients deep in the soil layers beyond the reach of annual crops. As roots die and are replaced, they leave behind fine soil channels which increase soil aeration and water infiltration, essentially giving the soil a spongelike absorptive quality. The year-round vegetative cover provided by forages holds the soil in place, captures snow and slows spring runoff. Any soil at risk of erosion can benefit from perennial forage cover. The Farm Stewardship program, funded under the federal-provincial territorial Growing Forward 2 initiative, helps producers protect high-risk erodible and saline soils through the establishment
of perennial forages. This Best Management Practice (BMP) is offered as a rebate, meaning that, after the forage establishment work has been completed, costshare funding is provided to qualifying applicants. Because certain restrictions apply, it is best to discuss the project with a Regional Forage Specialist prior to purchasing any forage seed. Forage seed should be ordered early, as certain forage varieties can sell out. If you plan on taking advantage of this BMP funding, 2017 is the year to do so. Rebate applications have to be submitted by January 31, 2018, which only leaves the 2017 growing season to get those seeds in the ground. For more information, please contact: • Your Regional Forage Specialist, • Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-457-2377 or • The Program Design and Delivery Branch at 1-877-874-5365
The hidden boost that buying local provides Though consumers no doubt understand how buying from local merchants can benefit those merchants, few may grasp just how beneficial buying local can be to their entire communities. In 2012, Civic Economics, an economic analysis and strategic planning firm, analyzed data from 15 independent retailers and seven independent restaurants, all located in Salt Lake City, comparing those businesses’ local economic impact with four national retailer chains and three national restaurant chains. The study found that the local retailers returned 52 percent of their revenue to the local economy, a figure that dwarfed the revenue returned by the national chains, which returned just 14 percent of revenue to the local economy. Restaurants provided an
even bigger boost to local economies, returning 79 percent of their revenue compared to just 30 percent for the national chain restaurants. The reasons for these disparities include local
businesses spending more on local labor and relying more heavily on local service providers. So while buying local may be more convenient and eco-friendly, it also can greatly benefit local economies.
Dr. Roach — No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I always have nitroglycerin with me, as I have heart disease. If I see someone having a heart attack, can I give them one? — J.G. ANSWER: I applaud your civic-mindedness, but you should not give out nitroglycerine. It is an extremely powerful medication that should be used only when sure of the diagnosis. I recall the chief resident during my training warning a fellow intern that he needed to do a careful exam before giving nitroglycerine, because it can be fatal in people with severe aortic stenosis, a blockage in one of the heart valves. It made quite an impression on me. Trained first-responders carry aspirin, nitroglycerine and oxygen for
heart attack victims. The key is to get the person to definitive medical care as soon as possible. I do recommend that everyone who is physically capable of providing CPR learn to do so. You can save the life of a loved one or a total stranger. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer
individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall. com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Langenburg proudly wins activity prize By Thom Barker Staff Writer Langenburg is $10,000 closer to having a new outdoor swimming pool. Between March 1 and 10, the community of 1,100 people 45 minutes southeast of Yorkton logged more than half a million minutes of physical activity in the 2017 Blue Cross/ Saskatchewan in Motion Go out and Play competition. “It’s inspiring to see the creative ways communities are working to get more kids, more active, more often outdoors,” said Marnie Sinclair, Saskatchewan in Motion manager. “We’re proud of these communities for doing their part to make sure Saskatchewan kids have opportunities to participate in active outdoor play.” Langenburg’s total of
506,262 was good enough to beat out 25 other communities including neighbouring Churchbridge, which came in second place with 370,056 minutes. We’re feeling pretty proud about it right now,” said Don Fogg, Langenburg’s mayor. “I know a couple of girls who worked really hard to get everyone to participate.” The women he was referring to were Juli Mitschke, director of parks and recreation, and Kaylea Simpson, economic development officer, who led the charge. “We’re pretty excited,” Mitschke said. “It took a lot of time and effort.” The town also participated last year, which gave them an idea of what it would take to win, which was, in a nutshell, an all-out effort.
“They were relentless,” Fogg said, also giving credit to schools, community organizations, businesses and every person from toddlers to grandparents, who got out and moved and logged their minutes. “Langenburg has really great community spirit,” Mitschke said. “We’re driven to grow our town
and crewate things to make it better.” Churchbridge will receive $5,000 toward its designated project, a community sport park that includes a skate park, beach volleyball court and horseshoe pits. In order to be eligible in the annual competition a community must complete an application
signed by the mayor or chief and designate a project that improves access to outdoor physical activity opportunities, particularly for children. The cities of Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw are not eligible, but community associations within those major centres have a second competitive track
they can enter. Only two community associations entered this year. Saskatoon Lakeridge Community Association won $10,000 with 406,000 physical activity minutes. The association will use the prize money to help build a joint-use playground for its park and elementary school.
Patients will receive state-of-the-art radiation therapy Patients receiving radiation therapy at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s Allan Blair Cancer Centre in Regina now have access to the most advanced equipment available, with the $5.08 million installation of a TrueBeam linear accelerator (linac) and completion of the associated renovations. The provincial government has also approved $3.8 million for a similar replacement linac in Saskatoon. “Cancer has impacted the lives of many people in Saskatchewan, my family and myself included,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “This
investment will provide patients with more advanced and accurate radiation therapy, and reflects our government’s commitment to accessible treatment.” The TrueBeam can deliver higher doses of radiation more quickly and with greater precision. It also provides better integration with imaging systems than any current or previous machines used. The customizable system will allow the Cancer Agency to provide cancer patients with leading edge treatment techniques. “Installing new linear accelerators in Regina and Saskatoon will make
a difference in the lives of cancer patients,” Interim President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jon Tonita said. “This equipment opens the door to new treatment possibilities for cancers in the lung, breast, prostate and spinal regions.”
Each cancer centre houses three linear accelerators, which have an operating life of about 10 years. The Saskatoon Cancer Centre already has one TrueBeam and the oldest machine there will be replaced with this technology in the future.
During 2015-16, more than 35,000 radiotherapy
sessions were conducted in Saskatchewan.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Last year I saw a movie on cable that starred Jewel, the singer, and she solved a murder mystery. It was based on a book series, so I was wondering if they were planning to make the movies into a series. — Lyla F., via email A: You are talking about Hallmark Movies and Mysteries’ “Fixer Upper Mysteries, which are based on best-selling author Kate Carlisle’s book series. I am happy to report that because of recordbreaking viewing numbers, there will be more installments coming your way. The second movie is “Concrete Evidence: A Fixer Upper Mystery, and it premieres Sunday, April 2, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. I spoke with Jewel recently about the series, and she is thrilled to return to the role of Shannon Hughes. “Shannon is a woman who once didn’t trust her intuition, and it cost her very dearly with her mother, and she made a promise to herself to never ignore her intuition again. And her fight is really every woman’s fight, every human’s right, which is to speak up for your inner ‘knowing’ and what you know is right and act on that. It was so synergistic
Jewel with the platform that I’m building (with jewelneverbroken.com), and getting to act a character who’s actually trying to live the same thing was a real fun opportunity. Jewel also sees parallels between acting and being a singer/songwriter/poet: “While there are definitely different aspects of the craft, the way I find my way into it is pretty similar. I wasn’t formally taught music; I taught myself guitar, and you teach yourself songwriting — same thing with poetry. I’ve always had an intuitive sense of looking inward, which came from my mindfulness practice and meditating from such a young age, and being curious and reading a lot. I was able to look inward to find my own authentic way.
If you’re willing to sit in the silence, be uncomfortable and look inward, you’re going to find originality. I use my same skill set for looking inward and trusting my instincts. Q: Do you know when “Game of Thrones will be back? Usually it’s around April or May, but I haven’t heard anything. — George A. in Rhode Island A: HBO has pushed back the premiere a few months. While there is not an exact date as of this writing, word has it that season seven will premiere in July. Don’t forget, season seven will have only seven episodes, with the eighth and final season rumored to have just six. Q: A few months back, I heard about a new Bill Nye science show. Can you give me any more information on that? — Kelli T., via email A: “Bill Nye Saves the World drops April 21 on Netflix. Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

Scholarship program links farm and food Could the Class of 2017 strengthen the ties between the world of modern agriculture and today’s food culture? Applying for a Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship offers a chance for this year’s Grade 12 class to tell us how they can do just that. Once again this year, the Monsanto Fund is seeking applications from Grade 12 students who are pursuing post-secondary education in agriculture or food studies, and who have big ideas for the future of farm and food. Sponsored by the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, this program has traditionally offered students from farm families the opportunity to capture one of 65 entrance scholarships valued at $1,500 each to help fund post-secondary studies in agriculture or agriculture-related fields. Eligible students can now choose to pursue a post-secondary education in agriculture or foodrelated programs, including fields of study such as nutrition or the culinary arts. Up to 25 of a total of 65 scholarships will be offered to students from non-farm backgrounds. Thousands of deserving students have received a total of more than $1.8 million since the scholarship program launched using corporate funds in 1991. Transition to the Monsanto Fund in 2012 has enabled more students to win scholarships due to consistent funding for the program. “Farm and food are intertwined, yet we seem to think about each quite separately,” said Kelly Funke, public affairs manager with Monsanto Canada. “The Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship Program would like to see how young people from both sides of the conversation would shape the future of farm and food. Let’s see where young, enthusiastic minds might take our industries.” Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarships are open to students who: Come from a family farm or other background, with confirmed plans to enroll in their first year of post-secondary education in agriculture or food-related studies at a Canadian educational institution; Have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership capabilities, and a keen interest and
involvement in their community; Submit a completed application form, which includes an essay that outlines their role in the future of sustainable agriculture and food production. They must also have a farmer or food professional provide a reference letter. All applications must be post-marked not later than June 15, 2017. Scholarship application forms and posters in both French and English are in the process of being distributed to high schools, 4-H clubs, provincial and federal agriculture offices, farm retail outlets and seed companies. Application forms and complete program details
can be accessed online at www.monsanto.ca. All applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges and winning entries will be announced in September 2017. The Monsanto Fund Opportunity Scholarship program will provide 65 scholarships to deserving students this year. As the philanthropic arm of Monsanto, the Monsanto Fund works to improve the lives of people around the world. Its giving is focused on strengthening both farming communities and the communities where Monsanto employees live and work. The Monsanto Fund seeks opportunities to support initiatives in
two main areas: Providing basic education support designed to improve education in farming communities around the world, including supporting schools, libraries, science centres, farmer training programs and academic programs that enrich or supplement school programs. Meeting critical needs in communities by supporting nonprofit organizations that help with things such as food security, sanitation, access to clean water, public safety and various other local needs. About the Monsanto Fund The Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of

We work to find sustainable agriculture solutions that help farmers conserve natural resources, use data to improve farming practices, use water and other important resources more efficiently, and protect their crops from pests and disease. Through programs and partnerships, we collaborate with farmers, researchers, nonprofit organizations, universities and others to help tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. HOLLYWOOD — Meryl Streep will follow her Oscar-nominated performance as “Florence Foster Jenkins” with the role of Topsy in “Mary Poppins Returns,” which stars Emily Blunt (as Mary) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (as Jack, a Dick Van Dyketype character). Dick Van Dyke will play Mr. Dawes, Jr., the bank director’s son, a member of the board, and Angela Lansbury will be a Balloon Lady. The film arrives Christmas Day 2018.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My little dog “Sherry” barks like crazy every time someone knocks or rings the bell. I’ve been trying to teach her to stop by using a spray bottle of water, as well as a sonic training device. So far, it’s just not working at all. What can I do? — Janet P., via email DEAR JANET: One of the reasons I rarely recommend tools like spray bottles or sonic trainers is because owners often rely on them as a primary means of behavior modification, rather than a last resort. Barking at the door is a common behavior for dogs — to them, it’s their job! So, when an owner suddenly spritzes a dog as it’s rushing to the door, or zaps it with a sonic noise,
David Cassidy Is Netflix expanding into theatrical releases? Netflix acquired the rights to Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film “The it’s very confusing and even traumatizing. These methods are designed to “shock” your dog into outright stopping what they’re doing. But that doesn’t help them understand what you actually want them to do. Get back to the basics with Sherry’s training. You need to reinforce three primary commands: come, sit and stay. Work with her every day in a quiet setting. She must come the first time you call; she must sit the first time you tell her to; and she must stay in place until you give the command to come. Give her lots of praise and a little treat only when she does these correctly. (Do not scold her or get frustrated if she doesn’t respond quickly — just be patient and positive.) Between training, when someone knocks at the door, command Sherry to come when she starts barking. When she gets to you, have her sit down before you answer the door. Once Sherry responds well to basic commands, you can add the command “quiet” to her repertoire. Irishman,” with Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel and Bobby Cannavale. It’s about the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, who vanished July 30, 1975. With a budget of $100 million, it seems unlikely that Netflix would pony up that kind of cash without releasing it to theaters first. George Clooney revealed, while accepting a special Caesar Award (the French Oscar), that he believes, “Donald Trump is a Hollywood elitist who has amassed 22 acting credits with The Screen Actors Guild and receives
$120,000 a year from its pension fund.” He further asserts that Steve Bannon, Trump’s top adviser, also is a Hollywood elitist “because he made millions from his investment in the ‘Seinfeld’ series.” Yet, Trump has cut funding to the NEA (The National Endowments for the Arts) because allegedly he’s angry that so many Hollywood actors are speaking out against him. Sorry to hear that David Cassidy has been diagnosed with dementia. In 1970, when he was the hottest teen actor in the world because of “The Partridge
Family,” I was granted an interview and photo session with him at his house in the Hollywood Hills. However, his publicist insisted on blindfolding me before she took me to there. I memorized the route along the way, deliberately left something behind and then showed up a few hours later to retrieve it. I told Cassidy that all he had to do was ask me to keep his house address a secret, and I did. Blindfolded, indeed! Did you know that as of 1951, if you’ve won an Oscar you can’t sell it, you have to offer it
first to The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for $10. Still, in 1999, the best-picture Oscar, presented to David O. Selznick for “Gone with the Wind” was bought for $1.54 million. How was it done? They couldn’t advertise it anywhere, so the owners pawned the award with the intention to repay the loan. When they failed to retrieve it, it became the property of the pawn shop, which in turn sold it to a private collector ... Michael Jackson. You might say “Oscar” was worth a lot more than his weight in gold!

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (PG13) — Long before Harry Potter got his first acceptance letter to Hogwarts, an adorably awkward floppy-haired Brit comes through 1920s Ellis Island, but chooses not to declare the menagerie of magic monsters in his suitcase. That fella is named Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a wizard researcher of mystic critters visiting the U.S. for the first time. (Super)naturally, some of the beasties escape into Prohibitionera New York, just as tensions flare between the American wizard community and their non-magical counterparts. J.K. Rowling’s whimsical vision expands to a new setting, with new players and backgrounds and simmering subplots. It’s exciting to open up a new place and time, but the act
(Garfield) suffers with the silence he gets in response to his prayers, with guilt from people dying to protect him, and with literal physical torture. Father Rodriguez refuses to believe that his mentor turned from God while under torture, but can he justify keeping the faith when innocent people are killed each time he doesn’t denounce? Martin Scorsese has had this projEddie Redmayne in “Fantastic ect in his sights Beasts” since “The Last Temptation of of “world-building” gets in Christ.” It’s a long movie, the way: You can feel the and one full of spiritual pressure of five planned doubt and bodily pain, but sequels weighing down on never without a point. Even this adventure. “Silence” (R) — Two Jesuit priests (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) smuggle themselves into feudal Japan — where Christianity is outlawed — in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson). While Japanese inquisiFacebook tors punish and execute Contest the faithful of a small town, Father Rodriguez
New feature for summer disc golf tourneys Closest-to-the-pin events are always popular at golf events. And, this year disc golfers attending Parkland Association of Disc Golf tournament series events will be competing for prizes in just such a tourney feature. The Asessippi Beach and Campground, home to the Asessippi National Disc Golf Course are going to up the prize certificates for the closest-to-the-pin competitions at PADG tournaments in 2017. They will be giving $50 gift certificates that the winner can use for camping fees, cabins or beach hut rentals, (dates depends on availability), merchandise or food at their concession. “We became involved with the PADG when they helped us through the process of creating our course,” said Rick Goraluk, who owns and operates the campground along with his wife Karen. “So when the Association started looking for a sponsor for closest-to-the-pin we saw it as a great way to support disc golf across the region, and hopefully attract more people to experience what
we have to offer too. “It may be clichéd, but this is win/win in our minds.” Trevor Lyons is the PADG tournament chair, and also was one of those who helped design the Asessippi course. He said it wasn’t a surprise the Goraluk’s came on-board as sponsors. “Once they decided to move forward with their own course they have been very active in the local disc golf community,” he said. “They were great in hosting a tournament last year, and have a two-day event planned for July 15 and 16 this summer. “They also volunteered to host the Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge in October, and now this sponsorship. They are the kind of people who help you realize disc golf has a bright future in our region. For more information on the tournament series, the sport in general, or the PADG, check out www.dulok44.wixsite.com/ parklanddiscgolf, or email padg.yorkton@gmail.com — Submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf.

the anti-Christian inquisitors are shown as men protecting their homes from dangerous foreign beliefs. It’s not a cheerful validation of faith, but an unafraid examination of it. The sky doesn’t crack open and reveal the truth of the Lord, but the devout carry on. “Patriot’s Day” (R) — Mark Wahlberg stars as a fictional Boston cop acting fast in the aftermath of the real 2013 bombing of the Boston Marathon. The film is mindful of the many complicated issues swirling around the events, but still has a very procedural feel. While Wahlberg’s everyman protagonist interacts with characters pulled from real life (played by Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons), timestamps
appear on screen and the alphabet soup of agencies get involved. There’s still room to argue about the ethics or wisdom of dramatizing such recent tragedies — intentional or not, it casts a narrative in bronze — but director Peter Berg shows restraint and consideration. “Why Him?” (R) — Bryan Cranston plays a sputtering fuddy-duddy pitted against a wild-andcrazy James Franco is this toilet-tacular retread of the “Meet the Parents” concept. Ned and Barbara (Cranston and Megan Mullally) fly from the Midwest to Silicon Valley to spend the holidays with their daughter (Zoey Deutch) and her new boyfriend — a bonkers, tatted up, super-rich, video-game mogul played by Franco.
You can barely see the wasted talent under the layers of toilet jokes.

SEAFOOD BAKE WITH CRISPY TOPPING Succulent fish and seafood become a decadent dinner when mixed into a creamy sauce topped with a crispy, shredded potato crust. •1 cup lowfat sour cream •1 tablespoon cornstarch •1 tablespoon Dijon mustard •2 teaspoons lemon zest •Kosher salt •Pepper •1-1/2 pounds mixed seafood (such as salmon and shrimp) •1 package frozen leaf spinach •2 cups frozen shredded hash browns
grab basic items from your kitchen cupboards and craft box, and you’re set to spring into color. Here’s what you’ll need: —Flat, round white coffee filters —Food coloring —Water —Muffin tin, ice cube
mustard, lemon zest and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Add seafood to the sour cream mixture and toss to coat. Squeeze spinach of excess moisture, roughly chop, then fold into the seafood mixture. Divide among 4 shallow 1-cup baking dishes and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle hash browns over the top and lightly brush with olive oil or coat with cooking spray.
Here’s the fun: On a newspaper-covered work surface, pour some water and a few drops of food coloring into each bowl or ice cube or muffin tin section. Have fun experimenting with mixing and creating your own shades. To get started, mix yellow and blue to create green, or red and blue to make purple. For deep-

Each time you apply a color, watch it spread on the paper to form interesting patterns and shapes. For a tie-dye look, fold a plain filter in half, then in fourths and eights, like folds for making a snowflake. Dip each corner and tip of the folded filter in the bowls of your choice. It takes only a second or two for the filter to absorb the
color. Carefully unfold the filter to reveal the colorful design. Hang the finished rainbow of art on a clothesline or lay flat on cookie trays to dry. To make a flower, pinch together a colorful, dry filter at its center and wrap a pipe cleaner or florist’s wire around the bunched area by your finger. Poke in a sturdy wire or twist on an additional pipe cleaner for a stem.

Amendments to the Provincial Lands Act and regulations proclaimed Saskatchewan’s new Provincial Lands Act, 2016 and its associated regulations have been proclaimed and are now in effect. Jointly administered by the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, The Provincial Lands Act was originally drafted to accommodate the settlement of the west and has been largely unchanged since its introduction in the 1930s. “Keeping our legislation modern and in touch with the needs of Saskatchewan people is a priority,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “These updates will help facilitate economic growth and reduce administration processes to improve client service.” More than 98 million acres of Crown lands are administered between the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment under the Act. “This revised legislation is part of a government-wide effort to modernize the legislative framework, provide better environmental protection and keep our province and processes current and forward-looking,” Environment Minister Scott Moe said. The amendments include: Better protection for Crown land by providing government with the ability
to respond and take action when land is being misused, such as issuing immediate stop work orders; Creating the framework for Ministry of Agriculture Crown leases to be used as security; Increasing the time period of certain long-term leases where significant investments are possible, such as wind power development; and Modernization of wording contained in the Act. The amendments also put into law regulations for the Ministry of Agriculture that include: The ability to work with lessees during extenuating circumstances where previously lease cancellation was the only option; Clarifying the ability of leaseholders to control access on their land; A clear annual deadline by which leases must be surrendered to avoid rental charges; and Lease cancellation authority upon municipal tax arrears of one year. These updates to the legislation and regulations reflect what was heard during an in-depth consultation process with lessees, stakeholders and First Nations and Métis communities in 2013 and 2016.

I must admit, I love breakfast foods. Typically, I make breakfast for myself and my husband every morning. He’s always in a rush, and sometimes he says he doesn’t have time to sit down and eat. In that case, I create a “fast food” breakfast using fresh, healthy ingredients that he can eat at his desk. Eating breakfast daily may lead to a healthier weight. A healthy, highfiber breakfast is more conducive to weight control than one loaded with fat, sugar and calories. “People think skipping breakfast helps lose weight; however, it actually works just the opposite,” says Lynda Johnson, a nutrition specialist. “Breakfast skippers often end up starved, then snack on high-calorie foods or
Did you know? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things older adults can do to promote their long-term health. The CDC recommends that men and women age 65 or older who are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, each week. In addition, such people should perform strengthtraining activities that work all major muscle groups at least two days per week. While many fit older men and women with no preexisting health conditions are capable of these activities, those able to push themselves a little further can opt for 75 minutes per week of vigorousintensity aerobic activity, such as jogging or running, combined with the same strength-training regimen. A combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity coupled with strength training may also provide adequate physical activity for aging men and women. Before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women should consult with their physicians to discuss any limitations they may have and how to manage those risks while still being physically active.
overeat at lunch.” In recent years, nutritional studies show that starting your day with breakfast benefits people of all ages, especially children. Kids who regularly eat breakfast are more likely to be successful in school. Well-nourished children are ready to learn, have a greater ability to focus on tasks, have better classroom behavior and have improved test scores. Breakfast eaters also tend to have better school attendance, less tardiness and fewer hunger-induced stomach aches. Teachers say it’s obvious when students skip breakfast. Why are we so likely to skip breakfast? Johnson suggests solutions to these typical excuses that may be keeping you or your children from eating a healthy breakfast.
—“I’m not hungry in the morning.” In actuality, you may have conditioned your body not to be hungry. To build up your morning appetite, start by drinking a glass of milk or juice, then a week later, add a piece of toast or fruit, then a small bowl of cereal. After fasting for 12 hours or more while sleeping, your body needs nourishment to function at its best. Over time, you will recondition your body to expect breakfast. -—“I don’t have time to fix breakfast.” There are lots of portable options that you can easily pack and eat on the way to school or work that can be prepared the night before. Breakfast tacos can be made ahead of time and reheated; yogurt and fresh fruit, granola and leftover pizza also make an easy breakfast on the go. By taking time to plan the night before, you can prepare a nutritious breakfast and skip the expense of a fastfood meal. —“My kids eat SO slow. I’d be late for work every day, so we skip breakfast!”
Most public schools serve breakfast, which works well for many families. Cost is minimal or free for eligible families, and the convenience is great. Check with your school district and sign up your kid for the school breakfast program. Even if you don’t eat breakfast at home, you can still be a healthy role model by packing a breakfast for yourself to take to work. On Saturdays, teach your children to become self-reliant and responsible by helping them to prepare their own breakfast using at least three food groups (grain, dairy and fruit). For example: • Chopped hard-boiled egg, grated cheese and salsa wrapped in tortilla • Ham slice and cheese melted in a toasted English muffin • Peanut butter, banana and jelly sandwich with a glass of milk I’ve mastered the art of creating breakfast dishes that can be prepared in advance. Try my recipe below for Banana Oat Breakfast Bars. These
nutritious bars are a delicious way to start your day! BANANA OAT BREAKFAST BARS •2 large, very ripe bananas •1 tablespoon agave syrup or sugar substitute •1 teaspoon vanilla •1 teaspoon ground nutmeg or cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon salt •2 cups rolled oats •1/4 cup pitted, chopped dried dates, raisins or craisins •1/4 cup chopped nuts — such as walnuts, almonds or pecans, plus 2 tablespoons for sprinkling Heat oven to 350 F, and lightly grease a 9- by 9-inch-square baking dish with butter or butter-flavored cooking spray. Peel bananas and blend in a blender or food processor until liquid and no large chunks remain. You will have between 1 cup and 1 1/4 cup. Pour mixture into a mediumsized bowl. and salt. Add the oats and stir until well-combined. Stir in dates, raisins or craisins, and 1/4 cup of the nuts. Pat the thick mixture evenly into prepared baking pan. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons nuts. Bake for 30 minutes or until the edges just begin to crisp up and turn a golden brown. Place baking pan on a rack to cool. When the pan is mostly cool, cut into 9 squares. Cover and store leftover bars at room temperature. They will keep for about 5 days. A tasty tailor-made tart for brunch Brunch is a great way to enjoy a lazy weekend morning and early afternoon. Unlike the hustle and bustle of weekdays, weekend mornings can often be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. Restaurants make substantial sums of money on weekend brunch specials, but home cooks can make brunch in the comforts of their own kitchens as well. This “Grape Tomato and Blue Cheese Tart” from Betty Rosbottom and Susie Cushner’s “Sunday Brunch” (Chronicle Books) makes the perfect flaky food to serve at brunch. GRAPE TOMATO AND
BLUE CHEESE TART Serves 6 Crust •1 cup all-purpose flour •4 ounces cream cheese, chilled and cut into 1⁄2-inch pieces •8 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cut into 1⁄2-inch pieces •1⁄4 teaspoon salt •1⁄8 teaspoon cayenne pepper Topping •4 ounces creamy blue cheese, finely crumbled •2 cups grape tomatoes, halved length-wise (see note) •2 teaspoons olive oil •1 teaspoon balsamic
vinegar •Kosher salt •1-1⁄2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley •2 green onions, chopped to include 2 inches of the green parts Arrange a rack at a center position and preheat the oven to 375 F. Have ready a 9-inch tart pan
with a removable bottom. For the crust: Place the flour, cream cheese, butter, salt, and cayenne in a food processor; pulse until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Remove and knead the mixture into a smooth mass and then press it with your fingers in an even layer into the bottom (not up the sides) of the tart pan. Smooth the dough with the back of a spoon. Freeze the tart shell for 15 minutes to firm, and then bake the crust until golden brown, 30 minutes. Remove the tart shell from the oven and cool for about 5 minutes but retain oven temperature.
For the topping: Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the crust. Arrange the tomatoes in a circular pattern and in a single layer over the cheese, cut-sides up. You may not need to use all of the tomatoes. Whisk together the olive oil and vinegar and drizzle over the tomatoes, and then sprinkle with salt. Place the tart on a baking sheet to catch any drippings and return to the oven and bake until the cheese has melted and the tomatoes are hot, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool the tart for 5 to 10 minutes and then remove the sides of the tart pan. (The tart can be made 3
hours ahead. Leave the tart cool at room temperature and reheat in a preheated 350 F oven until warmed through, 8 to 10 minutes.)
Mix together the parsley and green onions, and sprinkle over the tart. Cut the tart into 6 wedges and serve.
Note: Small grape tomatoes, which have a sweet flavor, work better than larger cherry tomatoes in this recipe and can be used year-round. However, in the summer, feel free to try the tart with one of your favorite varieties. Sweet ones that are on the small side work best.
Three protein-rich plant alternatives (NC) — We all know it’s important to get enough protein in our diets. This essential nutrient plays a significant role in many of our body’s functions, including the building and repairing of tissues, acting as a source of energy, and strengthening our immune system through the formation of antibodies. Commonly touted sources of protein include eggs, fish, and various types of meat, but did you know there are many plant alternatives available? Here are three plant sources, recommended by the Canadian Health Food Association that can help make your meals even healthier. 1. Buckwheat. Contrary
to the second half of its name, you may be surprised to learn that buckwheat is not actually wheat. Instead, similar to quinoa, it’s a fruit seed that also makes for a glutenfree grain substitute. Naturally high in protein, buckwheat is an excellent source of soluble fibre — the type of fibre that helps lower cholesterol, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and relieve common digestive problems like diarrhea. 2. Lentils. There’s a reason why lentils are becoming increasingly well known for their rich nutritional content. In 2013, the United Nations declared that 2016 would be known as the international year
of pulses to promote the health benefits of this type of food. These gluten-free legumes are high in protein and are a great source of other nutrients including insoluble fibre, iron, and potassium. Lentils are also high in folate, a watersoluble B vitamin that may be deficient in those with celiac disease. 3. Quinoa. If you’re looking for a high protein substitute that also makes for an effective rice alternative, look no further than quinoa. This ingredient is just as versatile as it is nutritious. Quinoa boasts many health benefits — it’s a complete protein, which means it contains all nine essential amino acids as
9TH ANNUAL BULL SALE On The Ranch April 6th, 2017 at 2 p.m.
well as other essential minerals like magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. Quinoa is also glutenfree, high in fibre, and contains antioxidants.
If you’re having difficulty getting your daily amount of protein, you can also try plant-based protein powders that you can mix into a healthy breakfast smoothie.
Find these options at your local natural health store using chfa.ca. Remember to consult your healthcare practitioner before making changes to your lifestyle regimen.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt

There are foolish things to do ... like, say, hitting the snooze button one too many times or eating too much chocolate or having unprotected sex. None of those things, however, comes close to the most foolish thing you can do: trying to drink a coffee on an Atlantic City Jitney bus. For the uninitiated, the
“Jitney” is a small bus that seats 13 people and costs $2.25 per trip around town. According to folklore, “jitney” meant “nickel,” and that’s what it used to cost to ride throughout town. It also should mean “zero shock absorption” or “hits every pothole dead on.” Atlantic City, you may have heard, has an image problem. The city used to have 16 casinos, and through attrition, now has seven. It’s a small town, out on an island, with about 40,000 residents. It has one of the largest unemployment rates in the country,
and nearly one-third of the town makes ends meet under the poverty line. There are more strip clubs than grocery stores. On the plus side, it’s where the boardwalk and salt water taffy were invented, and it’s the longtime home of the Miss America pageant. When you play Monopoly, all of the street names are real Atlantic City streets. And, yes, it still has plenty of casinos, the booze is free, and it hosts world-class entertainment (Frankie Valli and bunch of other big shots call it home) and
• Do you ever get to the end of a relaxing weekend, only to feel depressed at the prospect of heading back to work Monday morning? Well, the Germans have a word for that: sonntagsleerung. It literally means “Sunday emptying.” • Some historians claim that President Andrew Jackson believed the world was flat. • If it could avoid its inevitable dissipation, the typical cloud could circumnavigate the earth in less than two weeks. • In the United States, nuns have a longer life expectancy than any other
demographic group. Thought for the Day: “Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America ... when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.” — Carl Sagan
Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “GarbanzoCarrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-to-prepare recipe a truly unique taste.
• It was 20th-century American author and playwright Rose Franken who made the following sage observation: “Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly.” • There are only three places in the world that include St. Patrick’s Day among their official public holidays: Ireland (of course), the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. • It’s not clear exactly how they do it, but, according to those who study such things, bald eagles mate while they’re in midair.
ground black pepper •1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below) In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander.
Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges. Moroccan Spice Blend Makes about 2 tablespoons •1 teaspoon ground cumin •1 teaspoon ground turmeric •1 teaspoon saffron threads •1 teaspoon ground some of the best restaurants and shopping in the world. One of the town’s great hobbies is chatting about what can be done to “revitalize” the place. Ideas abound. A water park in one of the old casinos, legalized marijuana or a Ferris wheel are always bandied about. Some want to attract college campuses and others want to legalize prostitution. As if the town needed more vice. What Atlantic City really needs is sports. I was lucky enough to score tickets to a boxing match at Bally’s the other day. Five fights for $50, ringside seats because the woman I met outside had comps and

And it didn’t take long for a few of the old-timers in the audience to reminisce about the old days ... when Mike Tyson fought his way to belts in the 1980s, when MMA started up in the ‘90s. This is a town with great transportation: a train and bus hub, a great airport where flights can cost as little as $9. It boasts an empty minor-league baseball stadium, and despite all of the competition with one-off casinos in Philly, Delaware and Connecticut, those places are boring. No, in order to revitalize AC, the city has to turn to the other side of gaming: sports. Evander Holyfield is
starting a boxing “league” and plans on marketing it and conducting fights in AC. Dana White has plans to bring the UFC back to town. Rumor has a horse park coming to town. Now, if only the state can get its act together and legalize sports betting — a no-brainer — it will reap untold benefits. This has to be done. Atlantic City may be Mos Eisley come to life, but that shouldn’t mean you can’t bet on the Rangers-Flyers game. Give it a whirl, AC ... it won’t be the first time you dared to be different. Where am I? 1. I am satisfied with my current financial situation. 2. My spouse and I have sufficient life, disability and long-term care insurance for our situation as it is today and as it may be in the future. 3. My mortgage is affordable but is it possible to reduce my monthly payments? 4. I periodically analyze my household spending and identify ways to save. 5. I would have trouble finding the money to pay for a financial emergency. 6. I would have to change my lifestyle if my spouse lost their job and/or pension income. 7. I worry about the loss of principal due to stock market declines or crashes. 8. I’m concerned that I will not have sufficient retirement savings. 9. I pay too much income tax. 10. I am concerned about my estate and providing for my spouse and other beneficiaries after I’m gone.

Dehydration is a dangerous condition that can cause a host of complications and even prove fatal in severe cases. But as dangerous as dehydration can be, many cases are entirely preventable. The best way to prevent dehydration is to drink enough water. When the body does not take in as much water as it puts out, it can become dehydrated. People who live in warm climates or in elevated Auctions
altitudes may lose more water than those who do not. In addition, water loss is accelerated during strenuous exercise, highlighting the emphasis men and women must place on drinking enough water during their workouts. But water does more for the body than prevent dehydration. The following are a handful of lesser known ways that water benefits the body. • Water can help people maintain healthy weights. Dieting fads come and go, but water is a mainstay for people who want to control their caloric intake in an effort to maintain healthy weights. Water has zero calories, so reaching for a bottle or glass of water instead of a soda, lemonade or another caloric beverage can help people keep the pounds off. A study from researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that even diet soda enhances weight gain by as much as 41 percent. In addition, soda has been linked to conditions such
as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. No such association exists with water. • Water helps to fight fatigue. The fatigue-fighting properties of water are another of its lesser known benefits. When the body is not adequately hydrated, it can experience muscle soreness. And fitness enthusiasts who do not drink enough water may notice their bodies require extensive recovery time after working out. Each of those consequences can be prevented by drinking enough water, and doing so can even improve performance, as studies have shown that just a 3 percent loss of body weight due to dehydration can cause as much as a 10 percent drop in performance level. • Water can improve the appearance of the skin. Skin that does not get enough water can turn dry and flaky and feel tight. In addition, dry skin is more likely to wrinkle than adequately hydrated skin. Getting water to the skin can be tricky, as the University of Wisconsin-Madison School
of Medicine and Public Health notes that water will reach all the other organs of the body before it reaches the skin. But the school recommends applying a hydrating moisturizer within two minutes of leaving the bath or shower and drinking at least eight glasses of water a day to ensure the skin is getting enough water. • Water helps the gastrointestinal tract. Water can help maintain normal bowel function. When the body lacks sufficient fluid, the colon will pull water from stools in an effort to stay hydrated. That can lead to constipation, a condition in which people experience difficulty emptying their bowels. By drinking enough water, people can ensure their colon will not have to pull water from stools to stay hydrated, thereby helping them stay regular. Water helps the body in myriad ways, many of which might surprise people unaware of just how valuable water can be to the body.
