DEAR DR. ROACH: About three years ago, I was walking from the parking lot to church (not a long distance) and was overcome with a feeling of warmth and weakness throughout my body. I almost dropped my purse, but it stopped almost immediately. About three weeks ago, the same thing happened. I did not feel ill, and it passed almost as fast as it came on. I am 65 years old, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. I have yearly checkups and blood tests. After looking over my yearly bloodwork, which we do at work, my white blood cell count is usually
• It was French novelist — and, more significantly, journalist — Emile Zola who made the following sage observation: “One forges one’s style on the terrible anvil of daily deadlines.” • You might be surprised to learn that, among readers from families with incomes of at least $100,000, The Reader’s Digest reaches more people than The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Inc. and Business Week combined. • Have you ever heard of the Clarke-Asimov Treaty of Park Avenue? Unless you’re a fan of science fiction, you probably haven’t. Legend has it that
low, according to my hematologist. He had me do a total body X-ray and several blood tests over a threemonth period and found nothing wrong with me. I did not mention the above to him. Can you tell me what can possibly be going on in my body? — A.N. ANSWER: Since it has happened only twice in three years, and since you have had an evaluation without finding anything, it may just be one of those things that happens that we don’t get an answer to. In fact, I think that is the most likely outcome. However, whenever I hear about warmth all over the body, I worry about conditions that cause a release of substances that act on the blood vessels. Carcinoid syndrome and pheochromocytomas are two rare conditions that can cause a temporary flushing sensation, and you certainly should mention this to your doctor. Neither of them is likely, but you don’t want to miss
either possibility. Sudden onset of weakness is a warning sign of a TIA or stroke, but your situation doesn’t really sound like that. Still, giving your doctor the most information will help him decide whether this needs to be looked into further. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, and have been bothered by frequent urination for many years. My urologist was constantly recommending a surgical procedure, and was performing diagnostic tests to determine what I already knew — that I do not void fully. I sometimes must urinate three to four times at night. I have not seen this urologist for more than two years. My question is: What are the risks of doing nothing? I was on Flomax and found it to be of no benefit. — W.B. ANSWER: Difficulty urinating is a common problem for older men, and for many men, the symptoms themselves
two of science fiction’s Big Three, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke (poor Robert A. Heinlein missed out, it seems), were sharing a cab in New York City when they reached an agreement: Each author would publicly refer to the other as the world’s greatest in his specialty. This meant that Asimov touted Clarke as the world’s best science-fiction writer — reserving second place for himself — while Clarke acknowledged Asimov as the world’s best science writer — also putting himself in second place. Evidence of the agreement is found Clarke’s 1972 novel “Report on Planet Three”;
the dedication reads, “In accordance with the terms of the Clarke-Asimov treaty, the second-best science writer dedicates this book to the second-best sciencefiction writer.” • Those who study such things say that cannabis has been used to ease childbirth pains in a variety of cultures, ranging from the Middle East to Northern Africa to East Asia — and the evidence dates as far back as 2000 B.C. • It was the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, who first allowed the public to enter the White House. He also made sure the presidential abode was well-provided with spittoons — at least a dozen of them. Thought for the Day: “It’s surprising how much memory is built around things unnoticed at the time.” — Barbara Kingsolver
make them want to be treated. It sounds like you are asking if there might be additional downsides besides the symptoms. The major risk is that there might be a cancer, especially of the prostate, so seeing the urologist to look for cancer is important. Prolonged blockage occasionally leads to kidney damage, if the blockage is severe enough for long enough. Finally, having “stale” urine in the bladder predisposes you to infection. If your doctor finds you have good kidney function, no cancer and no infection, you don’t need to get treated. That being said, there are other treat-
ments besides Flomax that might help your symptoms. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers

Census shows Yorkton getting younger Scotia and New Brunwick tied for having the largest share of elderly people at 19.9 per cent. In terms of actual numbers, there were almost 300 more children in Yorkton in 2016 than in 2011. Mayor Bob Maloney attributes the numbers to economic activity. “The younger people is all about jobs being created,” the mayor said. He expects that trend to continue, he said, noting the recent announcement of a medical marijuana facility, the expansion of Grain Millers, new large
retailers at the Parkland Mall and the opening of the K3 mine at Esterhazy. While the share of the population of Yorkton has shifted toward younger, the overall percentage of seniors here is still considerably greater than the Saskatchewan and national averages, 20.6 per cent compared to 15.5 per cent and 16.9 per cent respectively. Maloney thinks that also bodes well for the city. “It’s an interesting demographic,” he said. “A lot of people are retiring and bringing money to the
city.” The mayor noted that is one of the drivers of real estate sales, particularly in the condominium segment. That may be true, but only in the context of overall housing activity which was up across the board between 2011 and 2016. The preferred dwelling arrangement for Yorktonites is still the single detached house, which accounts for 74.1 per cent of the population. That is the highest in Saskatchewan and fully 20 per cent higher than the
national average. The next largest group, 16.7 per cent live in apartments in buildings of less than five storeys. An interesting side note is that Yorkton is the only city in Saskatchewan that does not have apartment buildings of five storeys or more. The remaining nine per cent of the Yorkton population lives in row houses (2.7 per cent), semidetached houses (3.0 per cent), apartments in a duplex (0.7 per cent), other single attached houses (0.1 per cent), and movable dwellings (2.4 per cent.
Slow return to fields following weather delays Saskatchewan farmers are slowly making their way into the field. Adverse weather has delayed spring field work, such as applying herbicide, harrowing and seeding, in some areas. Many fields remain wet. Warm and dry weather will be needed in the coming weeks before seeding can get fully under way. The majority of producers with crop from last year still in the field
have, so far been, unable to finish harvesting due to cool weather, wet field conditions and lodged crops. It is estimated that approximately one million acres of the 2016 crop remains in the field, with the majority being in the west-central and northeastern regions of the province. There was little harvest activity over the winter months in these areas, and spring progress has been very limited. Aeration bins
and grain dryers have been in continuous operation on many farms since last fall. Despite these challenges, some producers in the south of the province have begun seeding pulses and cereals. One per cent of the provincial crop is in the ground, compared to the five-year (2012-2016) seeding average for this time of year of six per cent. In the southeast, producers are reporting that three per cent of the crop is seeded, while in the southwest, producers have two per cent seeded. There is very little, if any, crop
seeded in the other areas of the province. Much of the province received large amounts of precipitation over the last month, and fields remain wet in many areas. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 30 per cent surplus, 69 per cent adequate and one per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 16 per cent surplus, 81 per cent adequate and three per cent short. Producers are busy seeding, calving, controlling weeds, working fields and trying to wrap

PICKS OF THE WEEK “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” (PG-13) — The original “xXx,” a 2002 Vin Diesel gruntfest, put him in the role of a extreme-sports enthusiast recruited into the world of extreme international espionage (which is like regular espionage, but with more skateboards, rock concerts and tattoos). In the sequel, Xander (Diesel) is pulled back into the action to hunt down a super-weapon. He puts together his extreme team (including Donnie Yen and Deepika Pudakone) and gets to work pulling stunts and winking at the camera. Diesel is like an internet tall-tale version of himself. Xander’s extreme team-building exercise is playing catch with hand grenades. He doesn’t just

As the only teen on Mars, Gardner has a hankering for Earth so he can meet with Tulsa (Britt

Besides the long-distance romance, he’s also looking for his unidentified father and dealing with the threat that Earth’s gravity could be fatal for his Marsconditioned organs before he’s done coming-of-age. The movie plays it fast and loose with the science, and takes a lazier approach to issues of drama — some lines about love and courage might as well be delivered by Precious Moments figurines. By Cindy Elavsky Q: It seems like I’ve been waiting forever for a new season of “House of Cards.” Can you tell me when it will be back? — Vivian C., via email A: You don’t have much longer to wait. The political drama/thriller will return to Netflix for its fifth season on Tuesday, May 30. The 13 new episodes will focus on Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire’s (Robin Wright) campaign for president and vice president, respectively, after winning the party’s nomination at the end of last season.

Returning this season are Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Neve Campbell, Derek Cecil, Paul Sparks, Joel Kinnaman and Dominique McElligott, with Patricia Clarkson
Q: I just binge-watched the entire first season of “Shut Eye” on Hulu, and I am definitely hooked. Do you know if it has been renewed for another season? — Karl T., via email
Q: Please tell me the rumors are true and that “The X-Files” will be back for another season. — Diana D., Marietta, Ohio
A: The Hulu original drama starring Jeffrey Donovan, KaDee Strickland, Susan Misner, Emmanuelle Chriqui, David Zayas, Angus Sampson and Isabella Rossellini was given the green light for a second season. The show centers on Charlie Haverford (expertly played by Donovan), a Las Vegas magician who comes to LA to try his hand in the world of psychics and fortunetellers. He encounters a lot of physical and meta-
A: Fox has indeed ordered a second installment of “The X-Files” event series, which will have 10 episodes and, of course, will star David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Chris Carter will be back as executive producer. Production doesn’t start on the show’s 11th season until this summer, and the series is expected to air sometime during the 2017-18 season. Season five also will deal with Frank and Claire’s decision to take the country to war with the Islamic Caliphate Organization (ICO) in order to boost approval ratings. Mahershala Ali, who played Remy Danton, will not be returning. In other Netflix original-programming news, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” returns May 19. Its third season has Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) trying to divorce Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm), whom she married while she was in his cult in the underground bunker. Since last season Kimmy got her GED, she decides her next step is to go to college. Lillian (Carol Kane) deals with a breakup, and

Nikki told Victoria that she had a way to put Billy’s questions to rest. Nick warned Chelsea to be wary of any gift from his father. Wendel Clark’s banner to be delivered to Kelvington As part of the Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial Season celebrations, during the 2016-17 NHL season, the team created new banners to hang in Air Canada Centre to pay tribute to the players that have had their numbers retired. Beginning in the summer of 2016, and continuing into the first half of the 2017-18 season, the 18 original Air Canada Centre banners will be delivered to the towns that these players called home. On October 21, the banner of Wendel Clark will be delivered to Kelvington, Saskatchewan, with the official arrival taking place at the Kelvington Elevator on Railway Ave. “One of our goals throughout our Centennial Season, in addition to celebrating the rich history of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was to share the excitement of this special season with fans far and wide and thank them for their support,” said Brendan Shanahan, President and
Alternate Governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. “This banner tour was, and continues to be an important part of Maple Leafs history, permanently putting the original ACC banners on display in the towns of our greatest players.” “In 1993, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Leafs Alumni began the tradition of honouring former Leafs greats by raising their names and numbers to the rafters of Maple Leaf Gardens, until the team moved to Air Canada Centre, where the tradition continued,” said Peter Ing, President of the Leafs Alumni. “For years, hockey fans in Toronto have been able to enjoy these ceremonies and see the banners when they visit Air Canada Centre. It’s special to know that now, fans in the communities that produced those players will be able to see their banners as well.” Chairwoman of the upcoming event, Lorelle Holowaty said, “We are
excited for this opportunity to honor and celebrate the contributions, awareness and success that Wendel Clark has brought to the community of Kelvington. The event will celebrate the formal retirement of Wendel’s number 17. Our Wendel Clark Day Committee will be hosting a series of events for all ages, that will be both fun and respectful of the historical significance of this event.” Wendel Clark joined the Maple Leafs in 1985, and set a Leafs rookie record for goal scoring that stood for 31 seasons. After three tours in Toronto, Clark had become the club’s alltime playoff goal scoring leader. Former Maple Leafs President Ken Dryden said “Game in, game out, year in, year out, he was just a kid cruising the ice looking to cause trouble - a wicked wrist shot for a goal, a crushing body check, a fight - opponents’ bodies littered on the ice,
Did you know? Dented cans have long been a source of confusion and concern for shoppers. They may be discounted and seem like a good deal, but some of those dented cans may not be safe to eat. Damaged cans may be harboring food that contains botulism and other toxins. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Services, if a can of food has a small dent but is otherwise in good shape, the food should be safe to eat. However, deeply dented cans should

be discarded. Dented cans of food that are safe will have smooth dents or dents that are not on the seams of the can. A person should avoid sharp dents, dents in the seam and dents where the seam and the can meet. In addition, if the can is bulging or swollen, it should be avoided. Dents in a seam can let in air and bacteria. Deep dents may have left pinholes, again where bacteria can enter. When in doubt, avoid dented cans.
fans out of their seats, the place in an uproar, and Wendel, no expression on his face, looking around wondering what the commotion was about.” This past season, Clark was named to The One Hundred presented by Canadian Tire, a list of the 100 Greatest Maple Leafs of the team’s first 100 years, learned that he will be receiving a statue on Legends Row this fall. Itinerary for the day will include: • Official Banner Raising Ceremony at
2:30 p.m. @ Kelvington Elevator on Railway Ave (free for all ages) • Autograph, Meet & Greet at 3 p.m. @ Kelvington Recreational Arena (free for all ages) • Supper, Program, Live Auction & Dance starting at 5 p.m. @ Kelvington Recreational Centre (19+) All proceeds will benefit the Kelvington Recreational Arena. The one day ticket launch date will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017. To receive information for

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m having a very hard time finding a new apartment where the management will allow my two cats. And those that do allow pets have really high pet fees. I’m not sure what to do. Is there a law or something that would force landlords to allow pets? After all, there are laws to keep animals off the street, but it seems like apartment rules banning pets may cause more pets to be abandoned. — Christine B., Atlanta
DEAR CHRISTINE: I wish I could say there were laws like that — you make a very good case for them. But I doubt that there are any laws like that on the books in the U.S. While some might say you just need to keep looking for an apartment that takes pets and has reasonable fees, the reality is that fewer apartments allow pets at all. A new study by the National Association of Realtors surveyed homebuyers, and found that 61 percent said “it is very difficult or difficult to find a rental property or a homeowner association that accommodates animals.” At the same time, 95 percent of buyers who are pet owners said that it’s important for housing communities to allow animals.
Granular •1-1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast •1/4 cup chopped pecans
Pineapple Pecan Yeast Bread If you’re planning a brunch for Mother’s Day, put this recipe in the bread machine and forget about it until it is done. What a treat you will have! •1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, packed in fruit juice, undrained •1/4 cup water •1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Light Margarine •1-1/2 teaspoons table salt •3 cups bread flour •1/4 cup Splenda
In a bread baking-pan container, combine undrained pineapple, water, margarine and salt. Add flour and Splenda. Make an indentation on top of dry ingredients, and pour in yeast. Follow bread machine instructions for 1 1/2 pound loaf. Add pecans when “add ingredient” signal beeps. Continue following machine instructions. Remove loaf from machine and place on a wire rack to cool. Cut into 12 slices. Makes one (1-1/2 pound) loaf. • Each serving equals: 130 calories, 2g fat, 4g protein, 24g carbs, 306mg sodium, 5mg calcium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1-1/2 Starch, 1/2 Fat; Carb Choices: 1-1/2.
Pet owners paid about $150 a year in fees to communities — either association dues or rental applications — in 2016, the study said. But that didn’t
include fees like monthly dues for pets that some apartment communities charge. For now, keep looking. Some new communities
are adding pet-friendly features like dog parks, while others are revisiting their policies. Be prepared to pay a nonrefundable deposit for each pet,
however, no matter how accommodating the apartment community is. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You Ewes and Rams will find your ideas cheered by a mostly receptive flock. Those few dissenters could well be turned around by your charm and powers of persuasion. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s time for the bold and beautiful Bovine to shake off the dust of the past and shape up with new ideas for the future. This could surprise some folks, but they’ll soon adjust. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those nagging new doubts about an upcoming decision should alert you to step back (at least temporarily) so you can reassess its potential impact from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That unpleasant situation you hoped would go away by itself needs immediate attention before it affects an upcoming decision. Expect your

We saved over $300 in no time using this method. It works great for unexpected expenses like fixing a car or paying the copayment when you have to go to the emergency room.” — S.W. in Arkansas • “Erase permanent markers from countertops: Rubbing alcohol will dissolve the marker back to a liquid state so you can wipe it off.” — B.D. in Virginia • If you have a Swiffer sweeper or one like it, here’s an idea for a reusable sweeping pad, from

supporters to rally around your cause. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re moving up and away from that recent setback. But remain cautious about finances. An exercise in thrift today helps cushion a possible end-ofthe-month money squeeze. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You’re still dealing with overtones of pessimism that cause you to doubt your ability to make some needed changes. But the negative pressures will ease up by week’s end. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There could be some fallout from the way you handled a recent family problem. But those who know that you were in the right won’t hesitate to step in on your behalf. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Financial strains ease by week’s end. Meanwhile, focus on cultivating that new relationship if you hope to have
it blossom into something more meaningful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Health matters once again dominate the week. Be careful not to ignore recurrences of an old problem. An almost-forgotten commitment resurfaces. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) The emergence of an unusual selfish streak could dismay those close to you. Defy it — don’t justify it — so you can become your gracious self again. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Reassess your decision to stay with the status quo. It might seem like the sensible thing to do right now, but changes around you could make that choice a risky one. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Move decisively but cautiously when dealing with a delicate personal matter. The fewer mistakes you make now, the less likely it is that the problem will recur later on. BORN THIS WEEK: You can find beauty where many cannot. And you enjoy sharing your discovery with others.

It doesn’t pick up everything, but it makes a really good dust mop!” • “Use a stick-on hook to keep bibs where you need them: right on the back of the high chair! You can add a second hook for a small washcloth, too. I snipped a little hole in a

For Mother’s Day on May 14, nothing is more original or more cherished than a child-made gift. These two crafts are easy for a child to assemble with the help of dad, a caregiver or a teacher. The paper basket is a stylish container a preschooler will have fun crafting and filling with a minibouquet of flowers, chocolate or a small present. School-age kids can show off their artistic talents when they paint a windowsill flowerpot and plant a hardy succulent or Mom’s favorite herbs. Here’s how: MOTHER’S DAY GIFT BASKET (Preschooler craft) What you’ll need: —Round plate with even edges, approximately 7 inches in diameter (for a pattern) —Two sheets of 8.5-by11-inch heavy construction paper in contrasting colors —Pencil —Scissors
(Schoolage craft) —One 4-inch clay pot and saucer —Newspaper —Acrylic paints —Paper plates —Paintbrush —Potting soil and a succulent or herb plant
—Stapler —Stickers or lightweight decorations —Small bouquet of fresh or silk flowers or small gifts
Place the pot and the saucer on a newspapercovered work surface. Squeeze paint onto the plates. Paint over the entire outside surface of the pot
An adult should help the child put the plate on a piece of construction paper and draw a circle around it. Cut out the circle. Repeat with the second sheet. Fold both circles in half. Slide rounded edges together. Without folding, slide the bottom creases together to form the shape of a heart. Staple circles together to make a heartshaped basket. To make a handle, cut an 11-inch long strip of paper that’s 1 inch wide, and staple to basket. Decorate with stickers or objects such as a paper butterfly, and arrange flowers or gifts inside. HAND-PAINTED FLOWERPOT
and saucer. Let dry. (For a natural look for the background, skip this step.) Use a variety of contrasting colors to make designs around the plain or painted pot. Experiment with a splashy design of swirls, zigzags, stripes, dots and spots. (Dip an
eraser of an old pencil in the paint to dab on spots). Let dry. Fill with potting soil and plant a succulent or herb. Add a card for Mom. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on

HOLLYWOOD — Media outlets are confused about “Feud: Bette and Joan.” They seem to think there will be a second season of “Bette and Joan.” Ratings for the first episode of “Bette and Joan” far surpassed the next six, and only the final episode matched it. The next season of “Feud” will be about Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Susan Sarandon (Bette Davis) has been retelling how Davis chose her to play her in an earlier project, based on the 1985 “tellall” book, “My Mother’s
Susan Sarandon Keeper, by Davis’ daughter, B.D. Hyman (her married name). But Sarandon admits, “I was young and
inexperienced, and my agents were too lame to act on her request.” Sarandon has completed two new films: The first is the crime-comedy spinoff “Going Places,” written, produced, directed and starring John Turturro (based on his character in the 1998 cult classic “The Big Lebowski”). Bobby Cannavale also stars. The second film is “The Death and Life of John F. Donovan,” with “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harrington, Oscarwinners Natalie Portman and Kathy Bates, and Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain. Jessica Lange (Joan Crawford) so far has only the upcoming film “The Lonely Doll,” based
on the children’s book by Dare Wright and slated for 2018 release. In less than a month, “Beauty and the Beast” joined the $1 billion club (already making it the 25th top-grossing film). Dan Stevens, who plays the Beast, is so hot he has three films awaiting release: the thriller “Marshall,” with Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad and Kate Hudson, due Oct. 13; the romantic comedy “Permission,” with Rebecca Hall and Jason Sudeikis; and “The Man Who Invented Christmas,” in which he plays Charles Dickens, co-starring Christopher Plummer (Ebenezer Scrooge) and Jonathan Pryce (as
Dickens’ father). Somehow he also found time to have three kids with his wife of seven years, jazz singer Susan Hariet. Charlie Hunnam, who captured hearts playing Jax in “Sons of Anarchy” (2008-2014), but turned down the “Fifty Shades of Grey” three-film franchise because he didn’t count on his series being canceled, is consoled with three big films: “The Lost City of Z,” with Robert Pattinson, Sierra Miller, Tom Holland and Franco Nero, out now; the title role in the $100 million “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” (in 3D), directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Djimon Hounsou, Jude Law and Eric Bana, out May 12; and “Papillon,” in the Steve
McQueen role, with Rami Malek, of “Mr. Robot,” in the Dustin Hoffman role), coming Dec. 17. Insiders claim the real reason he passed on “Fifty Shades of Grey” was because his wife didn’t want him to do it, but ironically, they have since parted. “50 Shades of Divorce,” that could be the fourth film in the franchise!

Fish makes a fast, convenient meal Home cooks love fish because it is flavorful and often simple to prepare. Fish also does not take too long to cook, making it a perfect meal for busy professionals or families. The following recipe for “Broiled Chili-Lime Crusted Tilapia” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simply Scratch: 120 Wholesome Homemade Recipes Made Easy” (Avery) checks all the boxes, as it’s flavorful, easily prepared and cooks in roughly 20 minutes or less. BROILED CHILI-LIMECRUSTED TILAPIA Serves 4 •2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for the pan •Juice of 1 lime (about 2 tablespoons) •1 tablespoon cornstarch •1 tablespoon chili
•4 fresh tilapia fillets Garnish: •Lime wedges •Torn fresh cilantro leaves •Pico de Gallo (see below)
powder •1 teaspoon ground coriander •1 teaspoon ground cumin •1 teaspoon dried oregano, rubbed in your palm •1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder •1⁄2 teaspoon onion powder •3⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt •1⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Place the oven rack in the top portion of the oven. Crack the oven door and preheat the broiler to high. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly brush the foil with olive oil. In a shallow dish, combine the olive oil, lime juice, cornstarch, chili powder, coriander, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk to blend. Dip both sides of each tilapia fillet into the spice mixture and use your fingers to coat evenly. Place the tilapia
on the prepared baking sheet with the bottom facing up. Broil for 4 minutes, then carefully flip and cook for 4 to 5 minutes more, or until the fish flakes easily. Serve with lime wedges and torn cilantro or top with a few spoonfuls of Pico de Gallo.

It was Ted Turner who said (and I’m paraphrasing) that if you ever have a chance to own a baseball team, you should go ahead and do it because it’s a lot of fun. It’s hard to argue with Ted when he’s making sense. This from a guy who owns an estate larger than the state of Connecticut, brought buffalo back to the dinner table and who once eloquently brushed aside criticism of his wife by declaring he had not, in fact, married “Hanoi Jane,” he was simply making out with Barbarella on a nightly basis. To be sure, owning a baseball team puts you in an elite club. There are only 30 of them, so you don’t really have the luxury of comparison shopping. When one comes up for sale, if you’ve got the money and you still have a little bit of the boy (or girl) who collected baseball cards in a shoebox left in you, you make the deal. A quick look at the backgrounds of the current crop of MLB franchise owners shows them to be captains (or sons of captains) of industry, legal whizzes or savvy investors. But as they often do, things got weird in Miami. The owner of the Miami Marlins, Jeffrey Loria, is considered by most observers of the game to be the worst owner in baseball. Remember the Billy Joel
song, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”? It’s a song that details the life of Brenda and Eddie. At one point, they manage to decorate their first home with a couple of paintings from Sears. Billy didn’t know it at the time, but he was singing about Loria ... he was the guy in charge of buying the paintings for Sears. From there, he bought the Montreal Expos, killed them, bought the Marlins and despite winning a championship in 2003, has done nothing but insult the intelligence of Miami fans ever since. After NFL owner Dan Snyder, there is no more reviled owner in American sports. Not too many players own franchises — Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky being the exceptions. Two years after his last hit, Derek Jeter collars Jeb Bush and ponies up $1.3 billion in investment capital and suddenly the weedcracked, empty parking lots in Miami are about to teem with new life. The fans get a team that will try to win, baseball gets their most bankable superstar back and the Bush family gets to make a few more headlines. How quickly can a Jeter/ Bush-owned Marlins team turn it around? Let’s put it this way — the quickest way Jeb will ever see the inside of the White House will more than likely come via the hands and baseball mind of Jeter, and not any political action committee or otherwise wealthy donor. One can imagine that Jeb would not relish visiting the White House, current occupant considered, but you’d also have
Did you know? Solar energy and harnessing the power of the sun for reasons beyond natural light is not a new concept. British astronomer John Herschel converted solar power by using a solar collector box to cook food while on an expedition in Africa in 1830. And in 1931 Albert Einstein collected a Nobel Prize for his work in solar and photovoltaic experimentation. According to Solar Energy World, a solar energy and green living resource, by using renewable energy sources, such as solar power, one can greatly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
This includes emitting 20,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide each year into the atmosphere; 50 fewer pounds of nitrogen oxide; and 70 fewer pounds of sulfur dioxide.

to think he’d have to feel a bit proud of the fact that he succeeded where both his older brother — a terrible owner of the Texas
Rangers — and Donald Trump (who single-handedly killed the USFL) failed miserably. None of that matters in
Miami. To the fan, they just got handed a real franchise with a real owner for the first time in a long time. As Ted would acknowledge ...

SPRING CAR CARE FEATURES
Three ways to see better at night (MS) — Many drivers are less comfortable driving at night than during the daytime. Despite the fact that far more vehicles are on the road during the daytime than at night, studies have shown that approximately 65 percent of accidents occur at night. Many of those accidents and much of the discomfort drivers feel at night can be traced to inadequate lighting. Visual acuity, which is directly related to the amount of light provided by the environment, can be diminished by as much as 70 percent at night. The human eye is not adapted for nocturnal vision, so when driving at night, drivers often experience a loss of depth perception and difficulty distinguishing between colors as contrasts fade away. This is especially problematic for aging drivers, a segment of the driving population that is on the rise. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 36.8 million licensed drivers age 65 and older on the road in 2013, a figure the NHTSA estimates will increase to 57 million by 2030. As drivers age, the lenses of their eyes become more opaque, reducing the
ers might feel comfortable giving the vehicles in front of them a certain amount of room. Aging drivers can expand that comfort zone between themselves and fellow drivers at night. This extra space can help all motorists feel more comfortable, and it gives drivers more time to react if the drivers in front of them swerve or brake quickly.
Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs (right) can put out up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs (left). amount of light their eyes can receive. For example, at age 40, the average driver may already need twice as much light than a driver at age 20. At age 65, that need can climb to a whopping eight to 10 times more light (see graph). But aging drivers need not sacrifice their nocturnal independence just to stay safe behind the wheel. The following are three ways aging motorists can improve their nighttime
visibility. 1. Upgrade headlights. According to a recent study from the automotive club AAA, the halogen headlights found in more than 80 percent of vehicles on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit roadways, even when vehicles are moving at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour. Upgrade headlight bulbs are designed to put more light on the road, help-
10 tips to squeeze every last kilometre from a tank of fuel (NC) — Everyone can stand to keep a few more dollars in their wallets. And with spring and summer road trips just around the corner, now is the perfect time to learn to make the most of your fuel. It all starts with the fuel consumption ratings available on the windows of new vehicles and on the web. They reflect the results of standardized tests done in laboratories on dynamometers that simulate different driving conditions. While these ratings are achievable if you drive with fuel efficiency in mind, how, when, and where you drive can have a dramatic effect on your vehicle’s fuel consumption. Follow these fuelefficient driving tips from Natural Resources Canada: 1. Accelerate gently —
this can reduce your fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent. 2. Drive at the posted speed limit. Decreasing your cruising speed from 120 km/h to 100 km/h will decrease fuel consumption by approximately 20 per cent. 3. Use air conditioning sparingly, as it can increase a vehicle’s fuel consumption by as much as 20 per cent. 4. Measure your tire pressure once a month. Operating a vehicle with its tires underinflated by 8 psi (56 kPa) can reduce the life of the tires by 10,000 kilometres and increase the vehicle’s fuel consumption by up to four per cent. 5. Don’t idle. Idling for more than 60 seconds uses more fuel and produces more carbon dioxide emissions compared to restarting your engine.
6. Use cruise control on dry, flat, wide-open highways to help improve fuel efficiency by maintaining an even and steady speed. 7. Take the most fuelefficient route. Those with fewer stop lights and less traffic may use less fuel than shorter routes with more stop lights and heavy traffic. 8. Avoid carrying unnecessary weight. The less weight in your vehicle, the less fuel your engine will need and the fewer carbon dioxide emissions your vehicle will produce. 9. Calculate your mileage. Set your odometer every time you fill up and challenge yourself to get better and better readings. 10. Stay up-to-date on the latest info. Check out the Natural Resources Canada website at www.vehicles. gc.ca for some other fuelefficient driving tips.
ing to combat the natural deterioration of vision that so many aging drivers deal with on a daily basis. Philips Upgrade Headlight Bulbs can deliver up to 100 percent more light on the road than standard halogen bulbs, greatly improving nighttime visibility. Unlike major vehicle safety systems, such as air bags, three-point seat belts and anti-lock braking systems that provide
“passive” protection for drivers, Philips lighting promotes “active” safety protection by increasing overall visibility and illumination. This allows drivers to not only see each other better, but also to see further down the road so they can avoid potential hazards. 2. Give fellow drivers more room. In daylight hours, driv-
3. Maintain headlights. Often overlooked, headlight maintenance is another way older drivers can counter the effects that aging has on their nocturnal vision. Inspect headlights regularly, checking to make sure that plastic headlight lenses have not turned yellow or foggy. Designed to restore plastic lenses in less than 30 minutes, the Philips Headlight Restoration Kit quickly and effectively combats clouding on headlights as well as taillights, turn signals and reflective lens covers, helping aging drivers see more clearly at night while also making vehicles more visible to other drivers. How waxing can benefit a vehicle Car and truck owners recognize that a certain measure of upkeep is necessary to maintain safe, efficient and good-looking vehicles. Making sure what’s under the hood — and under the chassis — is in excellent condition is important. So, too, is safeguarding against damage to the exterior of a car or truck. One of the ways to protect against environmental damage is to wax the vehicle. Bird droppings, rain, salt, and sun can take their toll on a vehicle, and waxing can help combat these often inevitable environmental factors. The experts at Popular Mechanics say that, even though modern paint jobs have improved considerably in recent years, wax formulations have improved as well. Both can work wonders with regard to defending against color erosion, scratches and dullness. Furthermore, waxing increases resale value at trade-in time and can make it easier to clean vehicles. The consumer advocates at Angie’s List recommend that vehicles be waxed not less than twice a year. However, many detailers advise drivers to
have their vehicles waxed once every three months, or one time per season. In addition to protecting a vehicle from the elements, waxing provides the following benefits. • Deep shine: Wax is
the easiest way to make a vehicle look brand new again. While a carnaubabased wax may be recommended, many synthetic waxes are now available, and such products provide excellent shine capabili-
Inflation levels Now is the time to use a tire pressure gauge to see if tires are at the ideal inflation levels. Many tires indicate the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) on their sidewalls. Cold temperatures may cause tires to deflate a little. Esurance states that winter weather can cause tire pressure reduction at about one PSI for every 10 degrees the temperature drops. Driving on improperly inflated tires can be dangerous, potentially affecting handling and braking distances. Check tires when they are cold for the most accurate reading. Properly inflated tires also will improve fuel economy, so drivers may even save a little money by inflating their tires. Tire rotation/realignment Examine the tires for tread wear. Any uneven
a new coat of wax. The water-beading test is one such test. If the water beads up nicely while washing or during a light rain, the wax is still performing. If the water runs in large “sheets,” it’s time for a new coat of wax. Drivers can conduct the towel test as well after the car is washed and completely dried. The resource How To Auto offers guidance on how to perform this test: Fold a 100-percent cotton terry cloth towel until it’s handsized and thick. Apply firm pressure to the car’s surface and twist the cloth back and forth in a clockwise and counter-clock-
wise direction. If you hear a squealing noise, then it’s time for a wax job. Before waxing, the vehicle should be clean, dry and free of contaminants. Afterward, work in a shady area. Work carefully, but do not go so slowly that the wax dries too quickly. Do not apply the wax too heavily; a little goes a long way. Try to keep it even during application. Buff the wax with a microfiber towel when done. Waxing remains an important part of vehicle maintenance, safeguarding a vehicle from the elements while also keeping the car or truck looking new.

Tire maintenance a key component of spring check up When warm weather arrives, many people enjoy a collective sigh of relief. Just as people welcome the end of the cold, snow and ice, cars and trucks also can benefit from more moderate temperatures. Salt, grime and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical winter. Drivers will not get far this spring and summer without tires in good repair, which is why tire maintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist.
ties as well. • Fills in scratches: While wax will not remove scratches, it can fill in shallow scratches to make them less visible. • Reduces friction: Car wax smooths the surface of the paint and will reduce the friction between debris and the car’s exterior. This means debris will be more likely to slide right off than cause paint to chip. • Catches contaminants: Airborne contaminants will be trapped in the wax rather than settle into paint and etch the car or truck. A number of tests can indicate when a car needs

or abnormal tread wear could indicate that the tires need to be rotated and the wheels realigned at the very least. Take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to get their opinion on how to remedy the situation. Mechanics may recommend rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every six months for the average driver. Wheel realignment may be necessary after a season of driving over potholes and other irregularities in the road. Misaligned wheels can cause handling problems, like the car “pulling” to one side. Tire replacement Drivers may discover extreme tread wear, bulges or even cracks in the sidewall during a tire inspection. These signs indicate that it’s time to replace the tires. Failing to replace old, worn down tires can increase the risk of automobile accidents. Thorough cleaning Once tires are inspected and possibly serviced or replaced, treat the car or truck to a washing and thorough detailing. This

Projects to keep car running smoothly One of the ways to keep vehicles running strong for years on end is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Although there are many factors drivers cannot control, including recalls, weather and road conditions, proper maintenance is something drivers can control, and maintaining a vehicle can be very simple. Oil changes Motor oil lubricates the engine and keeps it in good working order. Old oil becomes more viscous and can lose its efficacy. While changing motor oil is important, motorists should follow the owner’s manual or the factory maintenance schedule regarding how often it needs to be changed, as all vehicles are not alike. The old myth that cars and trucks need oil changes at set intervals has changed as digital check capabilities have evolved. Car computers can now keep track of more than just mileage. Computers now track starts and stops and trip durations to determine when cars need oil changes. Coolant levels Coolant helps prevent vehicles from overheating and also prevents the water that it mixes with in the radiator from freezing or boiling. Coolant is nearly as
Oil checks and changes are vital to engine health. important as motor oil in vehicle maintenance. Coolant is typically comprised of a 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze. These two substances work together to maintain a proper ratio of heat
energy and prevent eventual breakdown and destruction of the engine. Coolant is usually changed once per year or at 30,000 miles. This keeps the coolant working properly and will help
prevent corrosion and deposits from forming inside the cooling system. Coolant levels might be checked during a full-service oil change appointment. Check battery contacts Many modern car batteries do not require a lot of maintenance. However, one problem that may occur is a buildup of minerals or corrosion from leaking battery fluid on the contacts. In such instances, use a battery cleaning brush to clean the contacts and then replace the cables. Tire maintenance Properly inflated, balanced and rotated tires make for a smooth, safe ride. Check that tires are wearing evenly and that the vehicle is not pulling to one side. A lack of tread on tires requires they be replaced. Because tires can be expensive, many drivers put off routine tire maintenance. But this can be a costly mistake. Tires that are worn or not properly inflated can cause skidding, problems braking and accidents. Blowouts also may occur, putting drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists in danger. It’s best to be proactive with regard to tire maintenance. Maintaining a vehicle in adherence to manufacturer guidelines can prolong the life of the car, improve its safety and increase its trade-in or resale value.
Maintaining car value over the long-term When shopping for a new car, savvy buyers know finding the right car involves more than just finding the most comfortable or flashy vehicle. Numerous factors, including resale value, determine what makes a car the right car for a particular buyer. Various websites and automotive resources rank vehicles based on their potential resale value, and drivers can do much to ensure their cars and trucks maintain that resale value over the long-term. • Pay attention to the exterior. Much like homes with strong curb appeal can help homeowners get
the best price for their homes when those homes are on the market, vehicles that look good can make strong first impressions on prospective buyers. Address any dings or dents on the car before putting it on the market, and make sure the car gets a thorough washing and waxing prior to showcasing it for potential buyers. Upon purchasing new vehicles, drivers with their minds on maintaining resale values can park their cars or trucks in garages as often as possible to protect them from the elements. In addition, when parking in public, avoid tight parking spac-
es that can increase the likelihood that other drivers will ding or dent the vehicle when entering or exiting their own cars. • Protect the interior. A well-maintained interior will impress buyers on multiple levels. Preowned buyers may feel more comfortable buying cars with well-maintained interiors that still make them feel as if they’re buying a new vehicle. Vehicles with well-maintained interiors also give buyers the impression that sellers care about the vehicle and prioritized maintenance. Avoid eating in the car, and immediately address any spills or stains. When taking the vehicle to a car wash, spend the extra money to have the interior cleaned as well. Seat covers can help protect cloth and leather interiors from spills, stains and cracking. • Keep maintenance receipts. Another way to maintain resale value is to keep all maintenance receipts from the moment the vehicle is purchased. Preowned vehicle buyers are making substantial investments when buying preowned cars, and many will want to be cer-
tain they’re investing in the right cars and trucks. Documentation with regards to the vehicle’s maintenance can assuage
any fears buyers may have and help sellers get the most money possible when putting their cars on the market.
Maintaining resale value is a concern for new car buyers who want to get the best returns on their automotive investments.

See better at night and be more visible Though fewer cars are on the road at night than during the daytime, driving at night is still dangerous. In fact, the National Safety Council notes that drivers’ risk of being in fatal car crashes is three times greater at night than it is during the daytime. While a host of factors combine to make driving at night less safe than driving during the daytime, poor nighttime visibility is one of the biggest contributors to driver discomfort at night. Depth perception, color recognition and peripheral vision can diminish at night. Though many drivers recognize that their own visibility is compromised at night, few may consider that others
motorists’ nighttime visibility is similarly affected. Fortunately, there are a handful of ways that drivers can improve their visibility and make themselves more visible to fellow motorists when operating motor vehicles after the sun goes down. • Get enough sleep. A recent poll from the National Sleep Foundation found that 13 percent of drivers acknowledged falling asleep while driving at least once per month. Poorly lit roadways and the absence of natural light can make tired drivers even more drowsy, furthering compromising their already diminished
visibility. The NSF advises drivers to get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, to avoid driving if they have been awake for 24 hours or more and to pull over for rest every two hours. • Improve vehicle lighting. Compared to the standard incandescent lamps used by many of today’s automotive manufacturers, LED lights are brighter and more visible to oncoming motorists. Unlike incandescent bulbs, Philips Vision LEDs remain bright and maintain their light intensity throughout the life of the lights. LEDs also can brighten up interior lights, such as courtesy, dome, trunk and glove box.
In addition, Vision LEDs were designed to be highly resistant to the extreme heat and vibrations that threaten standard incandescent bulbs, thereby increasing their durability and longevity. • Get routine vision checkups. Vision checkups are necessary for all drivers, but especially so for aging motorists. According to the American Optometric Association, the diminished vision that many drivers experience when driving at night increases with age, highlighting the importance of annual vision checkups. The AOA also recommends that drivers minimize distractions when driving at night so they can
5 tips to reduce air conditioning usage when you are driving (NC) — Canadians know that there are only a few weeks of the weather sweet spot every year — that magical time when you’re perfectly comfortable without turning on the heater or air conditioning. A refreshing breeze comes through the window when needed, and you save money on your bills at home and at the pump. But when that blissful time passes, it’s worth learning how to save on air conditioning usage — especially when you drive. Did you know that of all the auxiliary power requirements in your vehicle, the air conditioning system uses the most
energy and has the single largest negative impact on fuel consumption? It can actually increase fuel consumption by about 20 per cent when turned on.
1. Turn it off. Think about whether you really need that blast of cold air or if rolling down the windows will do while driving
in the city. 2. Reduce, reuse, recirculate. Consider using the recirculating function of your AC system. It requires less energy because your vehicle is not always cooling the outside warmer air. 3. Go with the flow. Why not use flow-through ventilation for highway driving or open your windows or sunroof while driving in the city? 4. Don’t over air condition. Use the same principle you use for your home system. Adjust your thermostat settings and aim for comfortable, not cold. And be sure to dress for the weather outside. If your office is blasting the air
(NC) — Eco-driving doesn’t just help the environment — it helps your wallet, too. Save the earth and a few dollars with these tips for greener driving. 1. Accelerate gently. The harder you accelerate, the more fuel you consume. In the city, you can conserve fuel by easing onto the accelerator pedal gently and gradually. Pretend there’s an egg under the gas pedal or open cup of coffee on the dash. Try to drive without breaking the shell or spilling the coffee and you’ll be good to go. 2. Maintain a steady speed. Be consistent. Unintentional dips in speed and sudden bursts of acceleration take a toll on your tank and your wallet. In fact, tests show that
varying your speed up and down between 75 km/h and 85km/h every 18 seconds can increase your fuel use by 20 per cent. Use cruise control whenever possible. 3. Anticipate traffic. Read the road ahead, anticipate road disruptions, monitor the movements of pedestrians and other vehicles and keep a comfortable distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. 4. Coast to decelerate. Coasting to a stop with your foot off the pedal is like driving for free. By anticipating traffic slowdowns as early as possible, you can decrease your speed, conserve fuel and save money by simply taking your foot off the accelerator. Most vehicles are now equipped with
fuel-injection systems that automatically shut off the flow of fuel to the engine when the accelerator is fully released. 5. Avoid high speeds. Even if you have a need for speed, slow down. Most cars, vans, SUVs and pickup trucks operate most fuel efficiently when travelling between 50 and 80 km/h. Above this optimal speed zone, vehicles will consume increasingly more fuel the faster they go. For example, if it takes $10 worth of fuel to drive a certain distance at 100 km/h, it would cost $12 to travel that same distance at 120 km/h. That’s like throwing a toonie out the window every 100 kilometres. Find more information at www.vehicles.gc.ca.
The bottom line is that air conditioning burns gas, which in turn causes greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, there are some excellent, commonsense ways to reduce air conditioning usage that can save you money at the pumps and help reduce your carbon footprint.
Five ways to eco-drive
conditioning, bring layers. 5. Find some shade. Your vehicle will require less cooling if it’s parked in a shaded area. If shade is unavailable, use window shades to decrease the heat intake when parked. Also, don’t use the AC when first starting your vehicle. Open the windows for the first few minutes to allow the hot air to escape. Find more tips for eco-smart driving on the Natural Resources Canada website at www. vehicles. gc.ca.
better focus on the road ahead. • Make your vehicle more visible. Even drivers who are comfortable driving at night must share the roads with other motorists, who may not be as relaxed driving after sundown. Philips Vision LEDs turn on instantly and can be installed as replacements for manufacturers’ brake and taillights, side markers, turn signals and back up lights, making vehicles more visible to fellow motorists and greatly

Like many women, including my sweet mother, I love chocolate. Receiving a gift of my favorite candy — whether it’s homemade or a box of seashell-shaped, hazelnut and chocolate confections — is one of the highlights of my Mother’s Day. It’s not just about the gifts, it’s about taking the time to acknowledge the meaning of motherhood and what your mother means to you. The recognition of motherhood has its roots in the spring festivals and celebrations of the ancient Romans and Greeks. The tradition continued with the advent of organized churches, and honored Mary, the mother of Christ, during the fourth Sunday of Lent. Later, Mothering Sunday, an English holiday, was created to celebrate all mothers. The tradition of a special holiday just for mothers began in the United States more than 150 years ago, when Anna Reeves Jarvis began “Mother’s Work Day Clubs” to improve the sanitary conditions to raise awareness
about the poor health conditions in Appalachia. During the Civil War, organized clubs in towns in both the North and the South worked to control a typhoid outbreak in Union and Confederate encampments. Later, Reeves also began a “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to reconcile families divided by the Civil War. In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” began organizing an official mother’s day on June 2 celebrating peace and as a protest against the futility of one mother’s son killing another during the Civil War. This more political observation of mother’s day soon died out. In 1905, after Anna Reeves Jarvis’ death, her daughter, Anna M. Jarvis, began a campaign to recognize her mother’s work and to honor her memo-
Rocanville couple wins $424,219 on lotto max! Darcy Turnbull thought he won $400 on his April 14 LOTTO MAX ticket. He was stunned 1,000 times over when he discovered the ticket he shares with his wife, Gladys, had actually won $424,219.50. “All I could see at first was a four and a two, so I assumed I won $420,” said Darcy. “I saw the rest of the numbers when the retailer scanned my ticket. I was shocked!” The happy winners said they knew what to do with part of their winnings right away. “All I could think of was the estimate we’re having to replace our shingles,” said Darcy. “Now we don’t have to worry about where the money is going to come from.” The Turnbulls purchased their winning LOTTO MAX ticket at Highway 8 Gas Bar & Confectionary, located at 718 Railway Avenue in Rocanville. ry. Her mother had once said, “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers.” During a church service in 1908, she began handing out her mother’s favorite flower, a white carnation, and pink or red carnations to honor mothers who were still alive. She also lobbied President Theodore Roosevelt and President William Taft and to start a national holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing
Mother’s Day as a national holiday. The House of Representatives also adopted a resolution recommending that officials of the federal government wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. Over the years, Anna M. Jarvis became violently opposed to the commercialization of Mother’s Day. “I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit.” She was arrested for disturbing the peace during a public protest in 1923 and fought to stop the sale of flowers. While Mother’s Day has become one of the most popular days to send flowers, dine out and make long-distance calls, Anna M. Jarvis’ original mission to honor and recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by mothers should not be forgotten. Throughout the years, my favorite Mother’s Day gifts have always been the ones that are handwritten and homemade. This recipe for Microwave Fudge is delicious and easy to prepare. It will provide a sweet finish to your
Mother’s Day celebration! MICROWAVE FUDGE •2 cups (one 12-ounce bag) semi-sweet chocolate chips •1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk) •1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or mint, almond or orange, if preferred) Butter a square pan and line with parchment paper for easy removal of set fudge. Set aside. In a microwave-safe 2 quart bowl, heat chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk on high for 1 minute. Remove from microwave. Let sit for 1 minute, then stir for 1 minute to combine until chocolate is completely smooth. If needed, heat an additional 30 seconds. Stir until chips are completely melted and chocolate is smooth. Stir in vanilla extract. Pour fudge into prepared pan. Let fudge cool for 2 hours at room temperature or for 1 hour in the refrigerator before cutting into 1-inch squares and placing

A few facts about your favorite foods Food is more than just a way to sustain life. Food can make a person feel good, provide avenues to engage with family and friends and serve as a way to experience other cultures. Certain foods are universally enjoyed, while others may appeal to only a few people. Many people have favorite foods, even if they know little about these foods. Check out these fun facts about some popular foods. • Pasta sauce: If enjoying a plate full of pasta topped in rich, red marinara sauce can
cure what ails you, then you will be happy to learn that cooked tomatoes are very good for personal health. Tomatoes are naturally high in vitamin C, and the process of making tomato sauce increases the antioxidant activity in tomatoes, which can make the body less susceptible to illness. Tomato sauce contains lycopene, which might reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration. • Red meat: Steak or a juicy burger is a favorite for many people. But through the years there have been mixed reviews
on the benefits and disadvantages of eating red meat. Iron in red meat is easily absorbed by the body, and beef also supplies vitamin B12, which helps maintain healthy nerve and red blood cells. Red meat has a bad reputation because it can be high in fat and cholesterol. However, choosing the right cuts, such as lean eye round roast and sirloin, can offset the negative aspects of red meat. There’s also evidence that grass-fed beef contains two to five times more omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed beef. • Macaroni and cheese:
Macaroni and cheese is the No. 1 cheese recipe in the United States and has remained on the list of America’s top 10 comfort foods for decades. While it is beloved in the United States, macaroni and cheese is believed to trace its origins to Italy. The first known recipe for this dish is from the thirteenth century in southern Italy. That recipe called for lasagna sheets and fermented cheese. Boxed versions of the food arrived in the 19th century. Today, there are many different mac and cheese recipes, from
classic to gourmet. • Pizza: Most people eat pizza regularly, with some enjoying a slice or more each week. Pizza accounts for more than 10 percent of all food service sales in the United States. The word “pizza” dates back more than 1,000 years and was first mentioned in a Latin text in 997 CE. It likely described what we now call focaccia, or a leavened round crust of cooked dough, as tomatoes were not yet available. Pizza now comes in many varieties, ranging from flatbread to thin crust to deep dish.
Five common food poisoning sources (NC) — If you’ve ever had a rough night after an all-you-can-eat buffet, then you know better than most the importance of food safety. But foodborne illnesses can do more than cause discomfort. There are approximately four million cases of food poisoning in Canada each year — that’s about one in eight people. Protecting yourself and your family begins by following the four rules of food safety — clean, separate, cook and chill. That’s how you’ll avoid the most common sources of food poisoning: 1. E. coli. Most commonly found in raw or undercooked meats and raw vegetables and fruit.
E. coli bacteria can also be present in untreated water and unpasteurized milk, apple juice or cider. 2. Campylobacter. Most commonly found in raw poultry, unpasteurized (raw) milk and untreated water. Dogs, cats and farm animals can also carry these bacteria. 3. Listeria. Most commonly found in processed meats, like hot dogs and deli meats; unpasteurized milk and milk products; raw vegetables; and raw or undercooked meat, poultry or fish. 4. Salmonella. Most commonly found in raw or undercooked poultry, meat, fish and eggs; raw vegetables and fruit; unpasteurized milk and
milk products; sauces; salad dressings; peanut butter; cocoa; and chocolate. 5. Clostridium botulinum (botulism). Most commonly found in improperly prepared home-canned, low-acid foods like corn, mushrooms, spaghetti sauce, salmon, and garlic in oil. Honey may also be contaminated. Bacteria form the biggest group of food contaminants, but viruses, parasites, mould and toxins can also seriously harm anyone who eats contaminated food. Food can become contaminated when not handled or cooked properly. Food poisoning can be

ling practices. You can do something as simple as using a food thermometer to check that your food is cooked properly. Always follow the four rules of food safety: clean, separate, cook and chill.
If you think you have a foodborne illness, report it to your doctor or health department. Find more information online at Canada.ca/ FoodSafety to avoid food poisoning.

caused by not chilling or cooking foods properly; by cross-contaminating cooked foods with raw foods; and by not properly cleaning cooking surfaces, utensils, dishes or hands. One of the most common mistakes is leaving foods in the “danger zone” where bacteria grow quickly — between 4°C (40°F) and 60°C (140°F). This is why properly chilling and cooking food is essential to food safety. Harmful bacteria can infect food at any point from farm to table. Fortunately, you can prevent most cases by following safe food hand-
