Spring time

Spring has arrived at the farm ranch of Doug and Holly Jansen of Hubbard, SK. This little baby calf had to be brought in and given his first drink of colostrum which he didn’t get from his mother. The mother cow followed the calf to the yard. There were six baby calves born that day.

Bang Theory,” “Malibu Country” and “Rules of Engagement.” On May 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, you can catch her in the Hallmark

original movie called “All for Love,” where Sara plays romance novelist Jo Parker, whose latest book about a woman falling in love with a Navy SEAL falls flat with her publisher. They send her to boot camp for research; the retired SEAL (played by Steve Bacic) who runs the camp is gorgeous; and we can assume that romance ensues. I spoke with Sara about her latest role, and she told me: “The movie is more about finding your inner confidence. We as women in society are constantly told we’re not that strong, we’re not as brave as men. And I think, sadly, that is something that’s been

some changes. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might find it difficult to make a decision about a family matter. But delay can only lead to more problems. Seek out trusted counsel and then make that important decision. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Concentrate your focus on what needs to be done, and avoid frittering away your energies on less-important pursuits. There’ll be time later for fun and games. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although the conflicts seem to be letting up, you still need to be wary of being drawn into workplace intrigues. Plan a special weekend event for family and/or friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December

C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Be patient. You’ll soon receive news about a project that means so much to you. Meanwhile, you might want to reconsider a suggestion you previously turned down. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There are still some aspects about that new job offer you need to resolve. In the meantime, another possibility seems promising. Be sure to check that out as well. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Opening up your emotional floodgates could leave you vulnerable to being hurt later on. Watch what you say, in order to avoid having your words come back to haunt you. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re usually the life of the party, which gets you on everyone’s invitation list. You also have a flair for politics.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Can you tell me what Sara Rue has been up to? I loved watching her on “Bones,” but now that it’s over, I wonder what she’s doing next. — Hailey H., via email A: Sara has been going nonstop since breaking into the biz when she was only 8 years old. She has starred in a number of series, including “Popular,” “Less Than Perfect,” “The Big

Whatever you do, don’t give up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A “tip” about a coworker’s “betrayal” might well raise the Bovine’s rage levels. But before charging into a confrontation, let an unbiased colleague do some fact checking. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a relationship still seems to be moving too slowly to suit your expectations, it’s best not to push it. Let it develop at its own pace. You’ll soon get news about a workplace change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A continually changing personal situation makes you feel as if you’re riding an emotional roller coaster. But hold on tight; stability starts to set in early next week. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Believe it or not, someone might dare to say “No!” to the Regal One’s suggestion. Michigan A: Based on Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prizewinning 9/11 expose, “The Looming Tower” will air in 10 episodes on Hulu. It traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaida, and takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI may have inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Aside from such Hollywood heavy hitters as Jeff Daniels and Peter Sarsgaard, it was recently announced that Alec Baldwin has joined the cast as CIA director George Tenet. Q: I loved your inter-

Oh, I’m not getting dirty.’ And then she realizes how empowering it is. The fear of failing is scary, and I think once you realize it’s OK to fail as long as you’re trying your best, that’s what’s most important. That’s when you really succeed.” Q: I keep reading things about “The Looming Tower,” and I can’t wait for it to premiere. Can you give me any scoops about it? — Tyler W., Ann Arbor,

Moving day It was moving day for the herd at Majestic Bison Ranch west of Yorkton. The herd of 340 bison cows, their calves and the bulls, were moved from one halfsection pasture across the grid road to another half section pasture. Bale twine

was strung across the road to remind the bison of the usual electrified fence. Once the gate was lifted the herd was eager to head to new pasture.

Youth film initiative a big success By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer A youth film initiative through the Yorkton Film Festival has proven a huge success. Last November, the Yorkton Film Festival was announced as a recipient of Canada 150 Funding, through Canadian Heritage, to undertake projects to celebrate Canada’s 150th. The festival embarked on an ambitious goal of getting youth from across Canada

involved by getting them to make short films which highlight our nation’s diversity. “This project has been embraced by so many young people. We are so proud of the stories they have told,” said Executive Director Randy Goulden. The program attracted 50 films entered in the high school competition and youth showcase. Those films will be screened at this year’s festival, which runs Thursday to Saturday this week in

School ruling appeal The Government of Saskatchewan will appeal last month’s Court of Queen’s Bench ruling on separate school funding. “After a thorough review of the decision, we will be filing a notice of appeal to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “In doing so, I hope we get further clarification on this matter that is vitally important for Saskatchewan families.” On April 20, the Court of Queen’s Bench ruled on a legal challenge brought by the Good Spirit Public School Division. The Court held that Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division could not receive provincial funding for non-Catholic students. The Court ruled that the government must stop paying for non-minority faith students to attend separate schools. The government disagrees with this ruling. If allowed to stand, the ruling would affect approximately 10,000 students who would no longer be funded to attend Catholic schools. The government previously announced Saskatchewan will invoke the notwithstanding clause regarding the decision.

the city. And the winning entries will be broadcast through City Saskatchewan and Rogers. “This student film competition creates very original storytelling about inclusivity and diversity” said Joanne McDonald, GM of City Saskatchewan, in a prepared release and as the provincial broadcaster, we look forward to sharing these films on our channel to help commemorate Canada 150. This marks the first round of submissions in the project. A second deadline has been set for

both the high school competition and showcase, for November 30. This will give youth another opportunity to share their films if they weren’t able to submit for this spring. “Through its Canada 150 project, the Yorkton Film Festival is providing youth with an opportunity to share their stories of our country’s rich diversity. We want to continue to build a welcoming country where there is a place for everyone – a Canada where everyone can reach their full potential. I applaud the Yorkton Film Festival for undertak-

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Fist Fight” (PG-13) — Kids at Roosevelt High School run amok with drugs, prurient pranks and brazen disregard for learning or their school community — the teachers are worse. On the final day of school before summer break, near-spineless Mr. Campbell (Charlie Day) tattles and inadvertently gets rageaholic Mr. Strickland (Ice Cube) fired, resulting in the latter challenging his wussy former-colleague to a fistfight after class. Hype builds quickly, snowballing into a full-blown fiasco. Much like the students of the fictional suburban

Open windows and doors wide to welcome in warm weather, friends and outdoor activities. Relaxing weekends are ahead and made for gathering people together for a picnic at a city park or right on your own turf. A family-style gettogether can celebrate and kick off this longed-for new season with a superlative gathering with the people you know and get to know starting with this long Memorial Day weekend. Keep it low-key and relax in the knowledge that being together with family, friends and newcomers in your community is the key ingredient that makes the event especially fun and memorable. Of course, some of the basics like burgers and potato salad might be essential to your gathering, but it’s the conversations, giggles, hugs, off-kilter moments and laughter that become the lasting impressions children cherish. Here are some ideas for prepping a grill fest for all ages: Get everyone involved — Once you decide on a place and time, divide prep responsibilities for salads, veggies, grilling, desserts, games and entertainment among individuals and families. For example, if cousin Jessica plays the guitar, ask her to bring it along for a rousing songfest. If Uncle Pete

guidance counselor) and Tracy Morgan (as a coach who helps prep Day for the fight). “Before I Fall” (PG-13) — Trapped reliving the same day over and over again, teenage Samantha (Zoey Deutch) comes to new realizations about the consequences of the ridicule her clique piles onto others. Lindsay (Halston Sage), the ringleader of

their mean-girl quartet, drives Sam and friends to their deaths after a party one night, launching Sam’s “Groundhog Day” experience. The clique’s regular punching bag, Juliet (Elena Kampouris), figures prominently in Sam’s journey toward escaping the cycle. True to reality-based young-adult fiction, there are plenty of cliches, and very high stakes are attached to pedestrian social dynamics. Still, Deutch succeeds in carrying the film, which is commendable given what she had to work with. Also of great import is that the movie hits its target and doesn’t choke in the final act, like so many before. “The Shack” (PG-13) — A regular flannel-clad family man (Sam Worthington) gets a mysterious invite from a higher power to find peace and enlighten-

in a large empty frame hanging from a tree branch. Plant a “Family Tree” — Do you have a favorite picnicking spot? Somewhere at Aunt Chloe’s vineyard or in grandfather’s back-

yard? Plant a “family tree” this Memorial Day weekend in honor of a loved one at the location you choose and watch it grow over the years, right along with the children who planted it. D o n n a Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday. com and link to the NEW Donna’s Day Facebook fan page. Her latest book is “Donna Erickson’s Fabulous Funstuff for Families.”

Halston Sage, Zoey Deutch in “Before I Fall” high school, the movie has a rotten sense of humor, appealing to the lowest common denominator but still quick enough to steal a laugh from the stodgiest authority figure. Ice Cube seems stuck on one note for the duration, when the whole thing could use the extra dimension. Credit is due to supporting players Jillian Bell (as a criminally incompetent

plays the fiddle, you’ll no doubt get everyone dancing. Get kids’ assistance in shucking the corn (match tasks to ages and skill levels) or encourage others to stage a humorous play or a bicycle-and-pet parade. Beverage center — Fill a small kiddie wading pool with bags of crushed ice. Bury canned sodas, juices and sparkling water, watermelon and water balloons in the ice. While drinks and fruit stay chilled, the balloons will be ready for some wet cool-down fun after the meal. Fun and Games — Use games to create an atmosphere of activity. Setting equipment out encourages people to participate and interact. Bring your ping-pong table outside and create a tourney grid to keep players and fans engaged in lively competition. Set out a bubble brew with bubblers, chalk for hopscotch, jump ropes, baseball gloves — why not play a round or two of musical chairs? Grill-fest pics — Snap some candid and group photos with people posed

ment on a forest getaway with the Holy Trinity. After losing a young child to a serial killer while on a family camping trip, Mack (Worthington), struggles with grief, while others around him find solace in faith. An invite from “Papa” (read: God) pulls Mack to a shack to spend some quality time with Papa (Octavia Spencer, and then Graham Greene), Jesus (Aviv Alush) and The Holy Spirit (Sumire Matsubara). Tim McGraw narrates. Warning: If you’re not already belting it with the choir, then this sermon isn’t for you. “Collide” (PG-13) — Here we have an original property with whiteknuckle chase scenes and a star-studded cast. That it was suspiciously left on a shelf for several years should be a flashing red warning that the bridge is out ahead. Casey (Nicholas Hoult) quit the crime life for the sake of his beloved Juliet (Felicity Jones). Juliet develops some health problems that

Casey can solve only with One Last Job for a scary Turkish guy (Ben Kingsley, not really selling it). Of course, the job goes awry and then a scarier guy (Anthony Hopkins) sends in his goons. Each time you think the action is ready to shift to a higher gear, a tank of overwrought exposition floods the engine.

We have been together for 27 years. He has smoked cigarettes daily for at least 30-35 years. Recently, he had an attack where he couldn’t breathe, and we took him to the clinic, where they did a breathing test. My 15-year-old son and I watched as my husband agonized to get through the test. HOLLYWOOD — Big news in Hollywood ... Jack Nicholson’s making a new film! His last film was the 2010 dud “How Do You Know,” with Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson ($100 million cost and $49 million gross). The film’s failure must have been a big disappointment for Jack, because he hadn’t announced any new projects since then. When asked in 2013 if he’d retired, he said, “I haven’t quit acting; I just quit hitting on women.” It was known he had trouble memorizing and remembering lines, and many speculated he was suffering from early stages of dementia. Scorsese is currently working on “The Devil in the City,” with Leonardo DiCaprio, and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also will star DiCaprio and De Niro. Director James Ivory hopes a new generation of moviegoers will pay to see “Maurice,” despite its being available on DVD and for downloading. It hits big screens June 2. Mark May 26 on your

As the days get warmer, it’s time to grill outdoors. Here are a few tips and a great recipe to guarantee that your outdoor grilling will be something to celebrate! Grilling Tips: • Take time to properly prepare your grill before using it. If it’s been a while, give your grill a good spring cleaning. Scour the grate with a wire brush. Save future cleaning time by using a nonstick cooking spray to prevent food from sticking to the grill. • Keep safety in mind. Place your grill on a level surface in a well-ventilated area and away from overhangs, deck railings and shrubs. Use longhandled tongs and flame-

Don’t be too hard on yourself down South. The whole racist thing has never been exclusive to your redneck part of the woods. Take Boston — if you can find the exit ramp — for example. For decades, fair or not (pronounced “nawt” on Beacon Hill), the city has garnered a reputation for being more than a bit unkind toward African-Americans. But don’t kid yourself. If you’re an adult, you know better. I’m getting tired of the whole “Boston is racist” narrative. You know that racism isn’t as neat and packaged as that. The conditions for racism exist anywhere a bunch of people who look alike suddenly come into contact with a few people who don’t look like them. Racism occurs when a few of the people from the majority act like jerks toward the minority. It’s really that simple. I’m tired of sports writers who pass the buck, who continue to claim that racism is such a head scratcher, something so complicated and complex and above their pay grade. I’ll take a stab at the Adam Jones situation and racism at the ballpark. I’m no Gandhi or Tibetan monk, but it seems to me that the answer is clear: Don’t be a jerk. If you’re at the ballpark and you feel the need to stand up, throw a bag of peanuts at a center fielder and call him a racial slur ... don’t do that. That makes you a jerk — or worse. I can understand why people around the guy didn’t tell him to sit down

retardant mitts to protect your hands. • Preheat your grill. You can estimate the approximate temperature by counting how many seconds you can hold your hand 4 inches above the coals. If you can hold your hands in place for four seconds, your grill is at medium heat or about 300 F to 350 F. If you can hold your hand in place for less than two seconds, you have a hot grill at about 375 F. • Be sure to use a clean plate and clean utensils to collect the cooked food from the grill. If you use the same plate that held the raw meat, you could be adding some unwanted “secret ingredients” to your meal. Salmonella, E. coli and other bacteria often are spread by crosscontamination. and shut up — after all, this was a ballgame, not a United Airlines flight — but the answer to much of society’s problems is really that simple: Don’t be a jerk. Why can’t you just enjoy the game? This could have been a column about the magnificent April Major League Baseball had. Bryce Harper set records, once again establishing that we may be witnessing one of the all-time greats! Madison Bumgarner hits two homers on opening day; Aaron Judge is 8 feet tall, hits homers off the moon and wears the number 99 in the Bronx! Players dive over catchers to score runs! The Mets are a train wreck! But no. We instead tackle the stupidity of a

• Use a food thermometer every time you grill. Don’t trust color as an indicator of doneness. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one out of every four burgers turns brown before reaching a safe internal temperature. Insert the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat, away from fat and bone. Clean your food thermometer well after each use because a dirty thermometer can crosscontaminate other foods. • Meat, poultry and fish aren’t the only foods that can be grilled. Try grilled fruit or grilled vegetables, whether directly on the grill or in a foil packet. CHEESEBURGER SLIDERS •1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend) •1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce •2 teaspoons steak sauce •1/2 tablespoon garlic powder •1 teaspoon salt bunch of fans taunting Adam Jones at a Baltimore Orioles game. Some of you reading this are disgusted that I even bring it up. “So what,” you may be thinking. “Life is tough. People are mean. That’s life. That’s how it will always be.” If that’s how you’re thinking, let me show you just how interactive a newspaper can be. Grab each corner, roll it up and smack yourself in the face. No! It doesn’t have to be this way for Adam Jones or anybody. Nobody is telling you how to think, nobody is even telling you what to say in private ... but it doesn’t mean we have to hear it at the ballpark. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Wisconsin DEAR BETSY: Snakebite vaccine is really expensive — $800 or more — and not covered by pet insurance. And it doesn’t mean they’re out of danger if they are bitten. Heat, jagged terrain and ticks are much bigger hazards than snakes. While there’s no guarantee that accident or injury won’t happen, you can drastically improve the odds in your favor by observing just a few guidelines. • Follow park service rules for pets: Dogs must be on a leash at all times. • Check the bulletin board at park entry points or ranger stations for the latest on health and safety hazards in the park. Better yet, ask a ranger directly. • Make sure your dogs’

SPRING CAR CARE FEATURES

A17

Five things your car could be telling you (NC) — Those new “shake, rattle and roll” noises coming from your vehicle are important sounds to pay attention to after a long winter and one too many potholes. “It’s always worth having a technician check out your vehicle. The problems may be minor, but if you ignore what your car is telling you it could create major concerns down the road,” advises Darryl Croft, automotive expert at OK Tire. Here are five common vehicle noises to be vigilant about: Shimmy, shimmy, shake. If your steering wheel shudders a lot and you’re

hearing louder than normal tire noise, it could mean your tires need balancing. If the vehicle is still not driving smoothly after your tires have been balanced, it usually means you must have your wheel alignment and suspension looked after. Just scraping by. If you’re hearing loud, scraping noises as you slow down or make a turn, it’s a good chance your vehicle’s brakes need attention. When brakes start to wear out, you will hear about it. If the squealing has turned into scraping, that usually indicates metal rubbing against metal. The brake pads may be worn out and every time you

brake one of the rotors is being damaged. Give your brakes a break and have them checked seasonally

— spring and fall. Start your engines. If your car’s idling mimics what you hear at the

Daytona 500, chances are your fuel injection system could use a cleaning or your ignition system is

acting up. Your automotive specialist can smooth things over by checking for an ignition failure. Leave the chirping for the birds. When your car starts to chirp or squeal when you step on the gas, it usually means a loose or slipping belt. When you can’t hear the radio. Loud rumbling or rattling exhaust noises beneath your car probably mean there is a hole somewhere in the system. The solution could be fixing your muffler or catalytic converter, or as simple as putting a new clamp on a loose pipe. Find more information at www.oktire.com.

Pros and cons of gas, hybrid and electric cars (NC) — If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, you know there are now many choices and technologies available making your decision much harder than choosing the perfect colour. It also makes good financial and environmental sense to consider electric and hybrid cards in addition to traditional gas models. Start by getting informed of the benefits and drawbacks of each and learn what will give you the best bang for

your buck: Electric. Electric vehicles use an electric motor powered by an internal battery. They produce no emissions and benefit from much lower energy prices compared to gas. In the past, electric cars were considered to be expensive, but affordable models have been rolling off the assembly lines for a few years. Battery technologies in today’s electric vehicles also offer enough driving range to satisfy

most daily commuter trips. Due to the abundance of public charging stations, you can also recharge on the go. Many businesses even offer priority spots for green vehicles and free electricity to charge your vehicle while you shop. Gas. Gas vehicles are the most common and usually offer lower up-front costs. Gas is easy to come by and is considered the default option for fuel on the road. But gas vehicles have numerous draw-

How to tell when your battery needs replacing The lifespan of a car battery — three to five years, on average — can be significantly shortened by several factors. Common causes for premature battery wear include frequently driving short distances, which doesn’t allow the battery to fully recharge, and prolonged exposure to extreme cold or heat. Aside from its age, the main signs that your battery is about to die include difficulty starting the engine, dim headlights, and certain electrical malfunctions (e.g. radio not playing loudly, windows are slow to open and close). A light can also appear on your dashboard to indicate a problem with the battery. Furthermore,

have your battery checked if it’s leaking, if its fluid levels are low or if its case seems swollen. To avoid unpleasant surprises, preventive maintenance and regular inspections of your car’s

battery are recommended — especially if you’re expecting cold weather or planning a long trip. If you think your battery might be defective, make an appointment with your mechanic right away.

backs. Despite their lower up front costs, they can prove to be surprisingly expensive when you add up your fuel expenditures over time. Hybrid. Hybrid vehicles use a combination of gas engine and electric motor to cut down your gas use. Series hybrids use the electric motor to power

your wheels at all times. The motor can draw power from either the car’s battery or the gas engine. Until the battery drains, the vehicle doesn’t even turn on its gas engine. This means you only dip into your gas tank when you need to, and your vehicle won’t release emissions unless the gas engine is on.

Blended hybrids passively cut down your gas use by always running the electric motor and gas engine together to provide wheel power. If your speed is low enough, a blended hybrid will cut the gas engine to save on fuel. Find more information at www.vehicles.gc.ca.

Headlamp safety at the core of new campaign To many motorists, “vehicle maintenance” means oil changes every 3,000 miles and weekly trips to the car wash. But there’s more to maintaining a vehicle than keeping it looking good on the road and tending to what’s under the hood. Recognizing the importance of nighttime visibility and how often headlamp maintenance is overlooked, Lumileds (founded by Philips) has launched a global safety campaign to increase awareness about headlight bulb technology and the importance of

replacing headlight bulbs in pairs. What happens to headlight bulbs as they age? The filaments of headlight bulbs age as the bulbs are used and exposed to the elements, which include sunlight, ozone and other environmental factors. As they age, the bulbs become fragile and light begins to deteriorate, typically within two to three years of initial usage. In some cases, aging bulbs may be delivering up to 30 percent less light than they delivered when

they were brand new. Why are aging headlight bulbs unsafe? When driving at night, many motorists may notice that sometimes one headlamp seems to be putting out more light than the other. While this is inconvenient, drivers may not know why it’s also unsafe. When one headlamp bulb is producing a substantially weaker light output than the other, the result is an unbalanced and inconsistent light beam that can diminish driver visibility at night, when drivers’

How to avoid hot weather breakdowns When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hot-weather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form. Battery Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-

maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced. Cooling system Cooling systems work hard to keep the flow of air to the engine and prevent it from overheating during warm seasons. Compromised cooling fans or lack of coolant can be troublesome. To avoid overheating, check coolant levels before getting on the road. In addition, have the cooling system checked by a trained mechanic prior to the summer driving season. It’s a small price to pay to avoid extensive engine damage from overheating. Tires Hot weather causes the pressure inside of tires to rise. Overinflated tires can wear down prematurely or result in blowouts. The Car Care Council recommends checking tire pressure routinely in the sum-

mer, when tires are cold. Follow the guidelines in the owner’s manual for recommended air pressure. Look for improper tread wear, weak spots or other tire damage that may end up causing flats. Fluid levels Hot weather can put extra demand on all fluids and engine components. Check transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and engine oil levels. Top off or change when necessary. Pack with breakdowns in mind Plan ahead for potential summer breakdowns by bringing along water, snacks, sunscreen, and an emergency medical kit. Be sure mobile phones are fully charged and that the number of a tow service or roadside assistance crew is entered into your list of contacts in the event of an emergency. With warm-weather road trips beckoning, it’s time to plan accordingly to prevent breakdowns that can derail fun.

Realignment check It’s a good idea to have your vehicle’s wheel alignment checked at least once a year (or every 20,000 kilometres) as part of regular maintenance and after any work is performed on the suspension or steering systems. Realignment is usually required after a collision or an impact, such as hitting a curb or driving over a pothole. Driving a misaligned

vehicle causes uneven tire wear and can lead to premature deterioration of the suspension. What’s more, a car that’s out of alignment doesn’t handle as well and often consumes more fuel than usual. If, while driving in a straight line, your steering wheel is crooked or you feel your car pulling to one side, realignment

is the most likely solution. A steering wheel that’s unusually difficult to reposition after a turn is another sign of trouble. To find out more, consult your mechanic.

visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. Who is affected by unbalanced and inconsistent light beams? Everyone on the road is affected when light beams emanating from vehicle headlamps are unbalanced. Drivers of vehicles that are producing uneven light beams will be driving with compromised visibility. Compromised nighttime visibility is a cause for considerable concern, as the National Safety Council® notes that traffic death rates are three times greater at night than during the day. But oncoming motorists are also

affected by unbalanced, inconsistent light beams. Such motorists may have difficulty seeing and identifying vehicles with just one headlight operating at peak capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles. That can create positioning issues that put drivers on both sides of the street in jeopardy. Why replace headlight bulbs in pairs? By replacing headlight bulbs in pairs, drivers are doing their best to ensure their vehicles produce consistent, balanced light beams that can make nighttime driving safer for everyone on the road.

Lumileds also notes the long-supported automotive industry standard of replacing various vehicle parts in pairs. Replacing parts such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades in pairs ensures vehicles will maintain proper balance and function properly when driving at night and during the day. Drivers’ nighttime visibility suffers greatly when one headlight bulb is producing significantly less light than the other. Replacing bulbs in pairs can help motorists make the road safer for themselves and their fellow drivers. More information is available at www.philips. com/automotive.

Five ways to protect your vehicle’s value (NC) — Car care just makes financial sense. It allows you to fully enjoy cruising in your vehicle until you are ready to trade it in for its full value. Next to a home, automobiles are likely the biggest financial commitment most people will make in their lifetime. Yet, many owners do not treat their cars with the same consideration or care, opting instead to discard

and upgrade when they become costly or unreliable. “Today’s vehicles are complex machines featuring an array of technology and features,” says autoTRADER.ca managing editor Michael Bettencourt. “While modern vehicles have been engineered and constructed for increased longevity, regular upkeep will help maintain their dependability and value.”

Here are a few tips to maintaining your investment: 1. Pay attention to details. Have irregular noises and warning lights addressed promptly by a trusted mechanic to fix issues and prevent further damage. 2. Keep it clean. Paint should be regularly washed and waxed to help protect surfaces from the elements, including road

salt and bird droppings. Vinyl and leather interior elements should be treated, to help prevent wear and tear. 3. Butt out. Few things will make a vehicle less attractive to potential buyers than that odour of stale cigarette smoke. Cleaning with chemicals or covering up with other scents will never fully remove the smell, so make a habit of keeping your car smoke-

Three tips for choosing a fuel-efficient vehicle (NC) — A fuel-efficient ride doesn’t just mean more green in your wallet — it’s also a greener option for the environment. Here are some tips for picking out the most fuel-efficient vehicle for your needs and family: 1. Think small for big savings. Choose the smallest vehicle that meets your everyday driving needs. They’re usually cheaper and more fuel-efficient than bigger models, saving you money in the showroom and on the road. If you end up needing to haul more passengers or gear, consider renting a bigger vehicle or using a trailer. The money you save by using a smaller vehicle should more than cover rental costs. 2. Transmission tweaks. Generally speaking, extra gears are better able to keep the engine running more efficiently. To get the

free. 4. Ounce of prevention. Ignoring a vehicle’s regular maintenance schedule provides a false sense of savings. While putting off things like oil changes or brake inspections may save limited expenses in the short term, it can be far more expensive to fix or replace parts once they have broken, seized or worn out. 5. Alternative transportation. Reduce mileage and wear on your vehicle

by avoiding stop-andgo gridlock. Try to limit unnecessary short trips when possible. With very few exceptions, most vehicles will depreciate the moment you drive them off the lot and continue to do so over their lifespan. By taking care of your car, you will extend its life and increase its resale value when it finally comes time to sell. Find more tips at www. autoTRADER.ca.

most gear ratios possible, ask the dealer about continuously variable transmission, which uses belts and pulleys to allow for an infinite number of gears. 3. Hold your horses. When it comes to horsepower, you’ll want to stick with a vehicle with enough

power to meet your everyday needs. A large engine will guzzle far more gas than a smaller engine. But if you expect to tow heavy loads or load up your car often, a higher horsepower engine can actually save you money. An engine too small for the load it pulls

can drive up gas use dramatically compared to an engine built for the task. Keep your needs in mind when choosing engine power.

Oil changes important Changing your car’s engine oil and oil filter at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer (after a certain number of kilometres driven) is an essential step in vehicle maintenance. Engine oil is crucial to the proper function of your car. It keeps the engine lubricated, protecting moving parts from wear and damage and ensuring they work together smoothly. It also keeps things

cool by drawing heat away from the engine’s internal combustion chamber. Finally, motor oil prevents dirt and debris from accumulating in the engine. After a certain number of kilometres driven, the engine oil in your car becomes contaminated with debris and loses its beneficial properties. This is why it needs be changed routinely. To find out more, ask your mechanic!

The many benefits of aerobic exercise A great workout routine combines strength training and aerobic exercise. But even some ardent exercise enthusiasts may not understand just how valuable aerobic exercise is. Running on the treadmill or using an elliptical machine might not be the most engaging exercises, but the benefits of aerobic exercise, often referred to as “cardio,” are undeniable. • Aerobic exercise helps people maintain healthy weights. Aerobic exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights over the longterm. The foods people eat and the fat they store provides

energy the body uses as fuel during cardiovascular exercise. The longer and more intense aerobic exercise sessions are, the more calories the body burns during those sessions. Successful weight loss programs should include routine aerobic exercise. • Aerobic exercise lowers risk for various diseases. Aerobic exercise has been proven to lower people’s risk for various diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and depression. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, high levels of cardiovascular fitness have been linked to a 50 percent reduction in

• Don’t let your keys sink in the pool, lake or ocean this summer. If you’re taking them with you, make sure you add a flotation device. They sell keychains just for this purpose. • “The dollar store is the best place for pool toys — they stock foam balls and all kinds of diving sticks and blow-up beach balls. I bring out lots when we go to the pool, and whatever kids are there can play with them. When we are ready to pack up, we’ll leave some behind if kids still are playing with them.” — C.A. in Arkansas • Many shells have holes in them, and kids are natural collectors. If you want a fun car-ride-home project after a day at the beach, bring a craft needle (blunt) and some yarn or

embroidery floss for each child. Have them thread shells onto the yarn. When flipped upside down, a Frisbee holds a selection of shells securely on little laps while they search for the perfect one! — JoAnn • Do yourself a favor and invest in a net bag to take to the beach. Anything that’s sandy can be placed in the bag, then you just shake it off. Get one for dry items and another for sand toys — just dunk that one in the ocean for a rinse before you go! • “There are a lot of ways to get your stuff out to the perfect sunning spot on the beach. My way is to dump all my stuff in a big laundry basket, which we pull with a rope. The flat bottom slides over the sand.” — R.D. in Florida • “One thing you might not think to bring to the beach is bug spray. Sometimes there are sand fleas, and a little bug spray really helps.” — L.I. in Virginia Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

the risk for cardiovascular disease. • Aerobic exercise can improve muscle tone. Exercise enthusiasts who want their efforts in the gym to show should know that aerobic exercise can

improve muscle tone and get men and women closer to the ripped appearance they might be looking for. Interval training, in which cardio routines alternate between high and moderate intensity, is a great way

to burn additional fat during aerobic exercise. • Aerobic exercise can improve mood. Studies have shown that aerobic exercise improves mood. In addition to its impact on body image, aerobic exer-

cise triggers the release of endorphins, a group of hormones that can quickly and effectively improve mood. Studies have also shown that physical activity can help the body combat anxiety and stress.

THANK YOU SASKATCHEWAN Because of your steadfast support of the STARS lottery, Caiden has been able to enjoy an active childhood. Two and a half years ago, his parents weren’t sure he’d get to grow into the talented young man he is today. A dirt biking accident landed Caiden face down in the gravel, with his bike on top of him. One of his leg bones was sticking out of his skin, and he was in extreme pain. He asked his mom if he was going to die. When the STARS crew arrived, Caiden’s mom felt instant relief. Surgeries and months of physiotherapy were tough on Caiden, but he learned to play guitar and worked hard to regain his hockey skills. This year, his team made provincial finals. Every day, Caiden’s family thanks the people of Saskatchewan for helping to give him a second chance at life.

• On May 31, 1859, the famous tower clock Big Ben rings out over London for the first time. Two months later the bell cracked. It was three years before the clock went into service again. The bell was rotated so that the hammer would strike another surface, but the crack was never repaired. • On June 2, 1865, in an event marking the end of the Civil War, Confederate Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, commander of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi, signs surrender terms offered by Union negotiators. With Smith’s surrender, the last Confederate army ceased to exist. • On June 4, 1896, in the shed behind his home in Detroit, Henry Ford unveils the Quadricycle, his first automobile. The Quadricycle was too wide to fit through the shed door, so Ford took an axe to the brick so the vehicle

could be rolled out. • On May 29, 1914, two boats collide in heavy fog on the St. Lawrence River in Canada, killing 1,073 people. The Empress of Ireland, following standard procedure, came to a complete stop in the fog. The Norwegian coal freighter Storstad not only failed to stop, but didn’t reverse engines, flipping the Empress on her side. • On May 30, 1922, William Howard Taft, chief justice of the Supreme Court, dedicates the Lincoln Memorial on the Washington Mall. Taft is the only former U.S. president ever to hold a seat on the Supreme Court. • On June 3, 1965, astronaut Major Edward H. White II opens the hatch of the Gemini 4 and steps out of the orbiting capsule, becoming the first American to walk in space. • On June 1, 1980, CNN, the world’s first 24-hour television news network, makes its debut in Atlanta. Initially available in less than 2 million U.S. homes, today CNN can be seen in almost 100 million households.

Simplify party prep

Hosting is a big responsibility that only gets bigger when food is being served. Hosts without much time on their hands to prepare foods for cocktail hour need only a few minutes to whip up the following recipe for “Gorgonzola Canapés with Walnuts” from A.J. Rathbun’s “Party Snacks!” (Harvard Common Press).

Gorgonzola Canapés with Walnuts Makes 30 canapés •1-1⁄2 cups crumbled Gorgonzola cheese •1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts •30 sturdy round crackers •3⁄4 cup dried cranberries •1⁄4 cup minced fresh parsley

In a medium-size bowl, toss the Gorgonzola and walnuts. When tossing, be gentle, as you don’t want to end up with big clumps. Career Opportunities

Top each cracker with a small mound of the cheese mixture, pressing the mixture lightly onto each cracker to keep it from slipping off. Top each cracker with 3 or 4 cranberries, and sprinkle a touch of minced parsley on top of each.

Disc golf tournament season under way The golf discs were flying over the May long weekend. The 2017 Parkland Association of Disc Golf tournament series began Saturday, May 20, with their third annual event at the Fort Qu-Appelle course. The event’s defending champion Jack Talsma of Fort Qu’Appelle would repeat with a big 18 in the afternoon, and then holding on through a final nine that was the top four golfers through 36 go at it. For his win Talsma took home the ‘Big Dog Award’ sponsored by Yorkton Joe Beeverz Bar and Grill, and earned an invite to the Farrell Agencies PADG Champions’ Challenge to be held in October at the course at the Assessippi Beach & Campground in Manitoba. Talsma is the defending champion. Duncan Holness of Regina finished second and will join Talsma at the year-end event, while Chris Istace of Moosomin and Josh Gregory of

Meville filled out the final four. Talsma also took home the ‘Best Drive Award’ sponsored by Yorkton Dodge. The chance at the ‘Tire Toss’ sponsored by Fountain Tire Yorkton was also won by Talsma, but his three shots at the tire came up short. ‘Closest to the Pin’ sponsored by Asessippi Beach and Campground went to Kadie Hozempa of Regina. Sunday the inaugural tournament at the course at Katepwa Provincial Park was held, with the help of the Katepwa Lions Club, the funding source for the nine-basket lay-out. The event again saw 18 plated in the morning, followed by another 18 after lunch, with the players with the top four scores then heading off for a final nine along the shore of Katepwa Lake. Jason Kienle of Kuroki would emerge to take the Joe Beeverz Bar and Grill ‘Big Dog Award’ and secure his invitation to the
